History of creation
The Kirovets K 744 tractor has been produced at the St. Petersburg Tractor Plant since 1995. Russian and German designers were jointly involved in the development of the machines, and the first models were manufactured exclusively for export. In 2000, the St. Petersburg Tractor Plant began mass production of K 744P machines intended for the domestic market and for sale to allied countries.
Since 2002, the Kirovets K 744 tractor has replaced previous models such as K 701, K700, K703. 2014 was the year of complete modernization of the Kirovets K 744 tractor. Several modifications of this machine are produced at the St. Petersburg Tractor Plant. Starting from 2016, the models are equipped with an automated gearbox of our own production.

Story
The Kirovets special vehicle 744 got its start back in 1962 - the first K-700 was produced with 235 horsepower, which was an innovation in those years. Fifteen more were released that year, and then fifty models the following year for industrial testing. In 1965, the State Customs Committee produced the first Kirovets for assembly line production with some changes.
This year a record 1,200 special vehicles were produced. By 1975, the first Kirovtsev models were obsolete, and their volume of work was not enough, so the K-701 with 300 horsepower was released. This product went through a lot and by 2000 the tractor described in this article with 428 horsepower was created.
By 2007, the K-700 models (1 and 3) began to fail to meet safety requirements and their workforce became insufficient, which contributed to the emergence of the third generation of industrial and sixth generation of agricultural tractors. New models up to 516 horsepower and high payload The updated series are used abroad for the first time in 25 years and are sold to North American countries.
K-744R1: technical characteristics

The rated speed is 1500 rpm. Maximum torque – 1778 N.m. Rotation speed at maximum torque – 1250…1350 rpm.
Previously, there was also a “Premium” modification of the K-744R1 tractor. Vehicles of this modification were equipped with Cummins 6LTAA8 or 9-C300 with a power of 306 hp. With. But few Kirov vehicles were produced with Cummins, and then (after modernization in 2014) the use of these engines was abandoned altogether.

Engine and modifications
Modifications of the Kirovets-744 differed in the type of engine installed. Thus, the basic version received the YaMZ-238ND4 engine, and the K-744R and K-744R1 models acquired the YaMZ-238ND5 unit. Both versions were produced by Yaroslavl Avtodiesel, which became the main supplier of Russian diesel engines. Motors from this manufacturer were characterized by a significant service life (up to 12,000 operating hours), ease of maintenance and repair, and cost-effectiveness when operating in a variety of conditions. The K-744R2 version again received a Yaroslavl engine.
Distinctive features of Avtodiesel products are built-in oil-water radiators for oil cooling, 4-valve cylinder heads and Kompakt-40 fuel equipment. On tractors with a Yaroslavl-made engine, a pre-heater was again installed.
Some modifications of the K-744 received foreign Mercedes-Benz engines:
- A 354-horsepower engine was installed in the K-744 R2M tractor, and a 401-horsepower unit was installed in the K-744R3M.
- The K-744Р3М model acquired a 6-cylinder in-line turbodiesel OM 457 LA with electronic injection function from Daimler AG (power 428 “horses”).
These versions were distinguished by high torque, reliability and significant power.
Energy saturation
Kirovets tractors are characterized by high energy saturation. This term means that the equipment is able to operate for a long time at a high level of efficiency, which is especially important when processing large areas. This characteristic also ensures that the tractor operates in difficult climatic conditions, for example, with large temperature differences in summer and winter, which are typical for the temperate climate zone.
Kirovets equipment is available in two versions - with a Russian diesel engine, and with a Mercedes-Benz engine.
According to the advertising booklet of the Kirov Machine-Building Plant, the energy-rich all-wheel drive wheeled tractor of the Kirovets K-744R brand is the most frequently purchased tractor in Russia. The serial range of this model is represented by modifications K-744Р1, K-744Р2 and K-744Р3, which differ in engine power. It is 300-390 hp. Also, the differences between the modifications of the K-744R tractor consist in the availability of devices for mounted units.
Design features
The first tractors of the K-744 series were equipped with turbocharged eight-cylinder YaMZ-238ND5 engines. This powerful four-stroke engine is equipped with a cold start system and a water-oil cooled radiator.
Power plant 300 hp. consumes 174 g/l per hour at a maximum crankshaft speed of 1900 rpm. The large fuel tank capacity of 630 liters makes long-term operation possible without refueling. The 24-speed Powershift gearbox supports 16 forward and 8 reverse speeds.
Using hydraulic gears, speed mode switching is achieved without loss of power. A hydraulic pump with a capacity of 180 l/min ensures the operation of trailed and attached equipment.
Greater stability, better cross-country ability and maneuverability are given to the tractor by a frame articulated by a hinge system. The turning radius of the huge machine is only 7.9 m. To reduce the impact on the fertile soil layer, double wheels and lower tire pressure are used.
Two drive axles, made of high-strength steel alloys with a rigid type of suspension and especially a self-locking differential and planetary type final drives, distinguish the series from other similar units. The pneumatic system allows the towed equipment and both axles to be controlled separately.
A fairly sealed cabin, with a panoramic view, is equipped with an on-board computer, heating, air conditioning and sound insulation systems. The seat and steering column are adjustable to the driver's parameters. The roof structure can also be changed.
Attachments are attached using a three-point scheme. Trailers are attached using a pendulum fastening.

The internal structure of the tractor is made in accordance with the best ideas of that time. In 2000, there was no machine that would provide not only the best productivity, but also ergonomics and comfortable operation. The engineers who created the fourth version of the KIROVETS project were able to fit into it high technical indicators, a convenient control access system and installed a comfortable and safe cabin. The main components of the tractor that ensure high performance can be called:
- Manual transmission with the ability to switch between 16 forward and 8 rear travel modes.
- High-strength alloy steel is used as the material for the KIROVTS bridges. Both axles are driven, while the rear axle can be disabled. Each of them has a rigid suspension.
- An additional element is installed on the tractor semi-frame, serving as a load. This load allows for greater traction with the surface of the earth on which the unit operates.
- The hitch is mounted on three zones, and also involves the operation of a power take-off shaft with a large set of fastening elements for different devices. The PTO allows the use of many attachments for various purposes.
Cabin and steering equipment
The cabin of the K-744 tractor provides a high-quality, comfortable room designed for two seats. Driver safety is ensured by a built-in rigid frame that can withstand enormous loads. The basic package also included a tinted window frame, which replaced the usual composite glass. Additional devices include:

Brake system
The K744 tractor is equipped with a pneumatic braking system consisting of:
- Belt driven compressor. Used to inject compressed air pressure into receivers;
- Air receivers (cylinders). Serve to store a supply of air under pressure sufficient to supply the system;

Hydraulic system
Tractors of the K-744R series are equipped with a modern high-performance hydraulic system of working equipment (HW). The LS system with axial piston pumps provides highly efficient operation with modern seeding systems thanks to its controlled flow.

- at the outlet of the quick-connect coupling the pressure is 185 bar;
- pressure in the hydraulic system – maximum 210 bar;
- four adjustable hydraulic lines for aggregation with hydraulics of additional attached equipment;
- drainage and free flow lines.
Four sets (pairs) of quickly connected breaking devices are designed to connect the necessary hydraulic lines of agricultural machines or implements connected to tractors to the tractor hydraulic lines. Bursting devices prevent oil from leaking out of a hydraulic hose operating under high pressure in the event of an emergency disconnection or rupture.
The hydraulic accumulator (absolutely sealed, under high pressure) reduces the peak load that occurs when switching spools on the hydraulic valve of equipment in the pump-hydraulic valve section.
