The wheels on the GAZ 66 car are designed for various operating conditions. Low-profile models ensure machine stability and high controllability. Wide-profile tires are perfect for transporting heavy loads on very bad roads. If you use a truck on soft ground, it is better to choose arched tubeless tires for the GAZ 66.

Wheels for GAZ 66

The selection of tires for a GAZ 66 vehicle should begin with the question for what purpose they will be installed. Experts distinguish several types of truck tires and wheels.

Tires for GAZ 66

The main feature of modern models is the presence of longitudinal grooves. This ensures that the tires respond clearly to steering movements.

For example, a tire that is installed on the drive axle is equipped with a specific tread pattern. Most often these are large blocks intersected by lamellas. Correct selection of the appropriate type of product ensures a smooth start of movement and timely stopping.

Universal tires for GAZ 66 for special-purpose trucks are usually used on both the drive and steering axles. The main goal is to minimize resistance when moving on uneven roads.

There are no special requirements for tires of this type, but their selection must be made taking into account the tread pattern. Longitudinal grooves and sipes are similar to the tread of steering products.

Standard parameters

As a rule, for this combat vehicle, three types of tires are used: K-70, Ki-115A and Forward Traction 70n.s.8, which meets the following parameters:

  • Wheel dimensions: 12.00R18310x80 R 457 with universal tread pattern;
  • Max speed: from 85 to 95 km/h;
  • Internal pressure level at max load: 340 kgf;
  • Statistical radius: 50.5cm;
  • Nominal air pressure in tires: 2.8 kgf/cm 2 ;
  • Wheel weight – 60 kg.

The presented tires are also compatible with the ZIL 157. Having studied the information presented above, everyone will be able to figure out which tires to install on such an all-terrain vehicle; there are many offers of GAZ 66 tires on Avito.

Tire size 12.00-18 was specially designed for particularly harsh conditions on the road, so they allow you to overcome mud, snow, swamps, go through mountainous terrain and any off-road conditions.

How to choose arched tires for a given domestic car

Choosing arched tires
The question of how to choose tires is relevant for any driver. This especially applies to the choice of tire size for the GAZ 66. In this option, operating conditions are taken into account. The manufacturer recommends paying attention to all parameters in order to choose the right cargo models. Before purchasing components, you should determine the following parameters:

  • truck type;
  • the weight of the cargo being transported and other features of the operation of the truck, for example, that standard tires on a GAZ 66 on arched wheels weigh no more than 60 kg;
  • on which axle the products will be installed (trailer wheels, drive wheels or steering wheels).

Arched tires - why are they needed?

It seemed that the Shishiga had excellent cross-country ability, what more could you need. But dissatisfied admirers of the 66th want even bigger, fantastic victories over off-road. And in addition to standard tires, they fit everything that rolls onto trucks, trying to find the right size, reducing the pressure in the ramps.

For better cross-country ability, there are arched tires. What can you say about them? The distinctive feature of them is a very wide profile - the width of the arched rubber is two or even three times greater than the usual width of an ordinary tire.

Example of arched gas tires 66
At the same time, the outer size itself remains at a normal level. This design makes it possible to reduce the internal pressure in tires to 0.5-1.4 kgf/cm2, the pressure on the ground is noticeably reduced, distributed over the entire width of the wheel, and due to this, the maneuverability of the equipment is significantly increased.

GAZ 66 on large Zilov wheels

Domestic cars with large Zilov wheels
The GAZ 66 is usually equipped with wheels whose size is 265/70 R19.5. As a rule, the wheel size 285/70 for the GAZ 66 looks somewhat ridiculous. Narrow structures visually spoil the appearance of the vehicle and also impair driving performance. For the GAZ 66 on Zilov's durable wheels for the purpose of transporting high-tech equipment, speed is not the main thing.

How to disassemble a wheel on a GAZ 66

You can disassemble a wheel on a UAZ, ZIL or GAZ according to the following principle:

  • First you need to completely release the air from the structure and place the wheel and tire on a platform or clean horizontal platform. The locking part of the rim should be at the bottom.
  • Remove the inner bead of the product from the rim landing flange, to do this, insert the curved end of the mounting blade between the bead ring and the rim flange into the mounting groove, press the bead ring down with the mounting blade, then insert the flat end of the straight blade into the gap formed, release the first blade, moving sequentially along circumference of the rim, inserting the ends of both blades into the gap formed and pushing the tire bead through the entire ring, remove it from the rim landing flange. The toroidal shape of the seating surface does not allow local removal of the tire bead, therefore, labor costs and installation time are significantly reduced when the tire bead is gradually settled by applying forces around the circumference of the wheel. Turn the wheel over and remove the tire bead from the second bead, repeating the above operations.
  • Remove the lock ring and bead from the GAZ 66 wheels. To do this, you need to insert the flat end of one blade into the groove located at the end of the lock ring. Using the second spatula, lift this end of the lock ring, pressing the end of the ring protruding from the lock groove with the first spatula, and squeeze it up. Holding the squeezed end with the second spatula, release the first spatula and place its flat end under the ring. Using mounting blades to press the ring around the circumference of the wheel, remove the locking ring. Remove the bead ring.
  • Remove the tire bead. To do this, you need to stand on the section of the tire bead opposite the valve hole. In the area of the valve hole, place the flat ends of both blades between the tire and the rim at a distance of 150-250 mm from one another. Applying force to the mounting blades, pull part of the bead outward, and the opposite part of the tire bead must be in the mounting groove. Holding the dismantled part of the tire bead with one spatula, release the other and place its flat end between the rim and the tire at a distance of 70-100 mm from the point where the tire bead transitions outward. Repeating this operation, remove the tire bead completely.
  • Press the valve into the tire cavity. Place the wheel in a vertical position. In this case, the lower part of the tire bead must be in the mounting groove of the rim. Remove the rim from the tire.

Tire for GAZ
Before purchasing new developments, you need to choose only reliable brands of tires and high-quality rubber. There is no need to conduct experiments here. The desire to save money can end in tragedy. Experienced car owners know that a low-quality tire bursts during operation and the car becomes uncontrollable. Fortunately, such cases are rare, but it is better to exercise caution.

Particular attention should be paid to the tread pattern. An excellent option for icy winter roads would be tires with a winter tread; for soft road surfaces, a directional pattern that will provide better grip. Different brands of trucks may require custom tires. Therefore, it is necessary to read the operating instructions for the truck before purchasing it.

On the 66 and 3308, as on the Tiger, the tire size is 12.00 R18, there is also the K 58 13.00 R18 tire, a rather rare thing, the main sizes of truck tires are in sizes R20 - 21 - 22.5, including off-road.

Therefore, it is logical to have R20 wheels on 66, but they only fit on Gas 53 -3307 and Paz, while they are only 7″ wide and the offset does not fit 66 and 3308. What are the options, there aren’t very many of them, first you need the central parts of the Gas 53-Paz disks, or cut on a laser, that the Zil 131 disk has a width of 8″, MAZ 8.5 disk, Ural disk 10″ and a wide 16″, this is all within a 20 radius but All this stuff is heavy and has locking rings.

Long ago, while digging in the hardware, I noticed MTZ 82 wheels; they weigh 25 kilos in one piece and, most importantly, have the width we are interested in: 9″ and 12″, wheel models W9-20 and W12-20, respectively

But everything would be too easy to eat as always, but there are no humps on them, everything would be fine, but if it is etched 0.5 and below, this is the road to weariness. Of the advantages, the tubeless camera is quickly mounted back. Having studied the issue in more detail, on the listed Ural Maz Zil wheels there is only an internal hump in its infancy, and even then not everywhere, on the main disks, also, strangely enough, only the internal one, although it always presses out the outer side, there are disks without humps. In general, the humps themselves are not difficult to make by carefully welding the seam and processing it; the height of the humps rarely exceeds 5 mm; if you overdo it, you may not tear it off rubber, the second solution is bolted locks, when holes are drilled in a circle around the hump, nuts are welded on the outside, the bolt is ground on emery to a cone and tightened with a copper washer, fixing the inner wall of the cord of things working but 3 kilograms adds plus imbalance, badlocks, tair locks, composite disk but this is already too much, well, no one has yet canceled the glass sealant. Yes, it means tubeless installation of rubber, this way you can save a lot on the weight of the wheel assembly. I would like to listen to thoughts on what I may have missed.

There are a lot of legends about the cross-country ability of the legendary Soviet-Russian truck GA3-66. It is believed that there is no off-road terrain that a super all-terrain vehicle cannot crawl through. How is such permeability achieved? There are a number of characteristics that provide this important indicator. But first, a little history.

From the history of the creation of GAZ - 66

The GAZ-66 was launched into mass production in 1964. It was created on the basis of the GAZ-62 and GAZ-63 trucks. The all-wheel drive truck had a payload capacity of 2 tons, a V-shaped eight-cylinder gasoline engine and a 4-speed gearbox. In 1968, a tire pressure regulation system was added to the GAZ-66 design. The model was twice awarded gold medals and received a quality mark. The production of GAZ-66 ceased in 1995, at the moment you can purchase GAZ 66 from military conservation.

Due to what the high cross-country ability of GAZ - 66 was achieved

A number of factors influenced the truck’s high cross-country ability. First of all, this is the use of self-locking differentials in both axles of the car. It is important to shift the center of gravity to the middle of the body, which gives an even distribution of the load on both axles of the car.

What are arch tires, what are their advantages and features

Due to the fact that many car enthusiasts want to get the most out of their food, they try to select and adapt a suitable set of “shoes”.

The main distinguishing feature of arched tires is their profile size, which can be 2-3 times larger than the standard one, while at the same time maintaining the normal outer size. This device allows us to reduce the level of load on the ground due to the width of the wheel and reduce the level of tire pressure to 0.50-1.40 kgf/cm2. and thus improve cross-country ability.

If you purchased wheels and arched tires on Avito with the “Yelka” tread, then be careful when installing, because there are special marks on which assembly is carried out. If the installation is carried out correctly, the tires will overcome any road difficulties and wear will be minimal.

Tires used on GAZ - 66

The influence of tires on cross-country ability

The wheels also help the all-terrain vehicle from the Gorky plant to overcome any obstacles with ease. Firstly, the design solution itself - one ramp on the front and rear axles. When passing an obstacle, the front wheels fill a track, and the rear wheels follow them in almost the same tracks, pushing through the same track size (the front wheel track is 1.8 m, the rear wheel track is 1.75 m). Considering the light weight of the GAZ-66 and the fairly large size of the tires, the car does not get bogged down in a swampy environment.

It’s another matter if the rear wheels were gable - then the car would slip on the rear axle.

Secondly, there is a wonderful solution by the designers - to add a compressor for inflating tires to the GAZ-66 truck. The swap really helped. Before the obstacle course, it was first possible to reduce the pressure in all wheels, and after passing a difficult section, pump up the pressure with a compressor.

Inflating also helped in case of tread damage - it made it possible to drive with a punctured tire to a tire shop, constantly maintaining pressure while the car was moving (the compressor is powered by the engine).

But it is worth noting that the standard compressor is quite capricious - it requires constant maintenance. If you just overlook it, it will immediately fail.

Thirdly, this is the use of arched tires on GAZ, lightening the rubber by stripping. Such non-standard solutions increase the ability to overcome difficult sections of the road with greater ease.

Low pressure tires

Low pressure tire

The optimal solution for improving the technical characteristics of the Shishigi cross-country ability is using low-pressure tires.

Tires with this device, due to their softness, are optimized for obstacles and overcome the most difficult sections of the road.

The disadvantages of such rubber include rapid wear on asphalt surfaces and low speed limits. At the same time, a good set of tires, even on Avito, costs significant financial expenses, so our craftsmen are inventing more and more new methods to achieve a similar effect.
