A great guide to selecting an engine for a walk-behind tractor/cultivator

Every self-respecting summer resident digs up his plot with a walk-behind tractor before the start of the summer season. But not everyone can afford to buy a new unit. This is why summer residents use cultivators made in the USSR. Such walk-behind tractors often experience all sorts of problems with the engine, but there are many reasons for this. The main reason for breakdowns is the service life, which has long expired. Recently, such problems have been solved by Lifan engines on a walk-behind tractor, because this is a profitable way to solve the problem independently and for a long time.

Choosing an engine for a cultivator

Unlike walk-behind tractors, which can be used together with an active hitch, walk-behind cultivators are used only for cultivating land. They usually don't have wheels.

Engine for motor cultivator Mole

The Mole cultivator was produced in the USSR, but now neither the Mole cultivator itself nor the engines for it are produced. But it's not a problem.

For the Mole you will need:

  1. Modern engine of the Lifan/Honda type with a 19.05 or 20 mm shaft
  2. Special new pulley for Mole under the shaft of the new engine (for 19.05 mm and for 20 mm)
  3. New belt A750

Answers to common questions:

  1. What power should I take for the new engine? An engine up to 8 hp with a 19.05 or 20 mm shaft will suit you. But we would advise staying at 6.5 hp; more powerful is not necessary.
  2. Wouldn't the old pulley work? No, it was for a different shaft diameter.
  3. Why is the pulley double-grooved? There are Mole models with reverse speed, so special pulleys for Mole are always made with 2 grooves.
  4. I want to take a 3 or 4 hp engine. 3 or 4 hp engines exist in nature, but are non-standard. And therefore they will cost more than the widely used 6.5 horsepower engines. Better take 6.5 hp.

Adviсe:

  1. It’s better to take 4-6 belts at once. They are cheap, but not sold in every store.
  2. There are a lot of instructions on YouTube for converting the Mole to a new engine. For example, here and here.

Optional equipment

The use of a variety of auxiliary attachments turns the walk-behind tractor into a universal multifunctional device. Almost all household chores and various types of land cultivation can be performed using trailed implements.

Utility brush Snow blower Trolley Hiller Water pump Shovel blade Potato planter Rotary mower

Depending on their purpose and design, trailers are aggregated with the Salyut 5 L-6.5 walk-behind tractor in three ways:

  • The active drive implements are connected using a power take-off shaft (PTO). This includes all kinds of stationary equipment, mowers of various modifications, pumps and pumping units, generator attachments, and snow blowers.
  • By means of a universal hitch or directly to the hitch bracket the following can be attached: adapters, carts, trailers, harrows, hillers, plows, potato planters, dumps, vegetable diggers of various models.
  • Pneumatic wheels, weights, lugs, cutters, and weeders are installed on the gearbox axle.

Engine for Tarpan motor cultivator

The Tarpan cultivator has been produced for more than 20 years. The most common variation is Tarpan-03 with a Briggs&Stratton engine, but there are also options with cheap engines (Champion, Weima). An unusual design feature of the Tarpan is its vertical engine, like a lawn mower.

Unfortunately, vertical engines are much less common than horizontal ones and are more expensive.

If you have a Tarpan-03 with a Briggs&Stratton engine, then you need an engine with a 22 mm shaft with a shaft length of 71 mm (length from the skirt - 51 mm):

  1. The Loncin LC1P70FA (5 hp) engine will install without modifications
  2. For the Lifan 1P70FV-B engine (6 hp), you will have to trim the shaft a little

If you have a Tarpan motor cultivator of a different model or with a different engine, then:

  1. You will need to measure the shaft length and diameter of the old motor. The diameter will be either 22 or 25.4 mm.
  2. Select an engine with similar parameters using this link

Answers to common questions:

  1. Why is it so expensive? Vertical motors from all manufacturers cost approximately 2 times more than horizontal motors of similar power. We can not do anything with it.

Another modern horizontal shaft cultivator

The specific manufacturer of the cultivator does not play any role. They will all have a copy of the Honda engine, and all such cultivators are either made in China or from Chinese components.

And since this is a standardized production, it will be easy to select an engine for such a cultivator:

  1. You need to measure the shaft diameter on the old engine . There will be either 19.05 or 20 mm, most likely 19.05 mm.
  2. Follow the link and see an engine up to 8 hp with a similar shaft diameter (19.05 or 20 mm).
  3. If you previously had an engine with a 19.05 mm shaft, but you want to buy an engine with a 20 mm shaft, then you can simply bore the old pulley to 20 mm.

Answers to common questions:

  1. Will the new engine fit on the same mounts? Yes
  2. I used to have a 3-5 hp engine, can I install the same one? Engines of 3, 4 and 5 hp exist in nature, but are non-standard. And therefore they will cost more than the widely used 6.5 horsepower engines. Better take 6.5 hp.

Motoblock Neva (with foreign engine)

Previously, Neva walk-behind tractors were equipped with Russian engines, but about 10 years ago the Red October plant switched entirely to foreign engines - Lifan, Subaru, Briggs & Stratton, Kasei.

To replace a modern engine on a Neva walk-behind tractor you need:

  1. Measure the shaft on the old engine (19.05, 20 or 25 mm)
  2. Take a new motor with a similar shaft diameter (19.05, 20 or 25 mm)

Clue:

If you had an engine with a 19.05 mm shaft, and you want to take a new one with a 20 mm shaft or vice versa, then:

  1. Take a new engine with the required shaft
  2. Buy a new pulley to fit the shaft size of the new engine (pulley 19.05 mm, pulley 20 mm)

Also, buying a new pulley is a good option if it is not possible to measure the shaft diameter on the old engine.

Answers to common questions:

  1. Will the mounts from the old engine work? Yes, they will fit
  2. My engine was weak, I want to install a more powerful one. If you want a simple option without modifications, then it is best to take the Lifan 170F-T (8 l) - this is the most powerful Lifan engine with a 20 mm shaft.
  3. I had a weak engine, I want to install a much more powerful engine (13 hp, for example). In this case, in addition to buying a new pulley, you will also have to redo the engine seat. The task is not very simple, and the gearbox will receive loads for which it was not designed.

Motoblock Neva with Russian (Soviet) engine

Russian engines for the Neva walk-behind tractor have not been produced for a long time, but there are still a lot of similar walk-behind tractors on the market. And since you can’t buy a new Russian engine anywhere, everyone buys a modern engine and a special installation kit.

Procedure:

  1. We choose a new modern engine with a 19.05, 20 mm or 25 mm shaft (if you had a low-power domestic engine, we recommend choosing options with a 19.05 or 20 mm shaft).
  2. We take a special installation kit with a similar shaft (for 19.05 mm, 20 mm or 25 mm shaft)

Answers to common questions:

  1. What is included in the installation kit? Transition platform, pulley, damper, fastenings.
  2. Is it difficult to place? With an installation kit - no. There are also many installation instructions on YouTube.
  3. Can I just buy a new pulley? It’s possible, but you’ll save little and waste time.

Change of oil

Changing the oil in a walk-behind tractor containing a Lifan engine should be carried out as follows:

  • The engine itself should be hot, but before draining the oil from the crankcase, it must be turned off.
  • We unscrew the drain plug, as well as the oil pan dipstick, after which the remaining oil should be drained. Then we reinstall the plug in its original place.
  • We fill the crankcase with oil, which is recommended by the manufacturer. Its level must be determined using the dipstick.
  • We install the dipstick in its original place, and then tighten it until it stops.

Change of oil

Many people ask what kind of oil to pour into the engine of a Lifan walk-behind tractor? In general, each instruction directly indicates the name of the oil that it is advisable to fill. In general, it most often recommends summer oil SAE-30, or all-season oil SAE-10W-30.

Engine for Ural walk-behind tractor

Ural walk-behind tractors became relatively widespread during the Soviet era, but have not been produced for a long time - just like the native engines for them.

The main problem with installing a modern engine in the Urals is that the walk-behind tractor was designed for an engine with right-hand rotation of the shaft, while all modern engines come with left-hand rotation (counterclockwise). Left rotation of the shaft is the actual modern standard and an unpleasant surprise for Ural owners.

The only solution is a reverse shaft rotation gearbox . This gearbox is very rare and difficult to install - you need to disassemble it and reassemble it on top of the engine. The result is a right-handed engine.

Such assemblies are made in very small batches and are sold in literally several stores throughout Russia, including in our store:

  • Engine Lifan 170F-T Ural (8 hp, professional, with reverse rotation gearbox)

Since the reverse rotation gearbox is very expensive and difficult to install, there is no point in installing it on top of a cheap motor. You will reduce the total cost of assembly by 20%, but an assembly based on a cheap engine will last 2-3 times less than one based on a Lifan 170F-T.

Therefore, an assembly based on a professional Lifan 170F-T engine (8 hp) will be the most profitable in terms of one hour of life.

Answers to common questions:

  1. Why is it so expensive? Reverse rotation gearboxes are very expensive.
  2. So what, they take it? Yes, it costs as much as the cheapest walk-behind tractor! Yes, they do and for many it is a good choice. The walk-behind tractor that you buy for this money will last much less than the Urals with the Lifan 170F-T Ural engine.
  3. Will the old pulley work? No, unfortunately, no. The reverse rotation gearbox has an output shaft diameter of 15 mm.
  4. Can I buy a new pulley right away? Unfortunately, again, no, 15 mm pulleys are not mass produced; the easiest way is to order them from a turner.

Lifan company

The founding date of the company is considered to be 1992. From that moment to this day, the company experienced many difficulties associated with its formation period, which allowed it to gain the necessary experience. At the moment, Lifan is considered one of the leading companies in China in this market segment.

The main specialization of the company is the production of passenger cars under the same brand. In addition, the organization’s specialists are engaged in the manufacture of motorcycles, scooters, buses, etc.

Lifan company

In 2006, the company entered the world market by introducing its first sedan, the Lifan 520. Later, in 2008, another premiere took place - this time, the corporation released the second representative of this model range, i.e. Lifan 620.

In the same 2008, a partnership agreement was concluded with American colleagues from AIG, Inc. The result of this cooperation was the emergence of a joint production venture.

Since 2010, Lifan Motors is considered the only private company in China specializing in automobile production. In general, the export share of cars of this brand is 11.38%, which is the second result in the country.

A garden sprayer will be a suitable unit for supplying plants with water; it will significantly save your time and effort, so purchasing such a device will be a truly profitable investment for absolutely any gardener. Here you can get acquainted with the Marolex sprayer.

In the spring, when it is time to plant seedlings, plant seeds and seedlings, the most labor-intensive work during this period is planting potatoes. With a potato planter for a walk-behind tractor, planting potatoes can be done quickly and efficiently.

The rapid pace of development has allowed us to significantly increase our representation around the world. In particular, over 165 factories were opened in America, Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia. After receiving the appropriate certificate, Lifan cars began to be widely distributed in the European Union.

Engine for MTZ walk-behind tractor (Soviet engine)

MTZ walk-behind tractors are still produced in Belarus to this day. But modern MTZ walk-behind tractors have a slightly different structure than Soviet ones - and most importantly, they are produced only with foreign engines (mainly Honda and Weima).

For the most common models of MTZ walk-behind tractors ( MTZ-05, MTZ-06 and MTZ-012) there is a special adapter:

  • Adapter for MTZ walk-behind tractor (Belarus) for installing a modern engine

Together with this adapter, any modern Lifan/Honda type engine with a 25 mm shaft and the required flange will suit you. You can view all suitable engines we have here.

Answers to common questions:

  1. Will it work with a 9 hp engine (Lifan 177F)? Very often on the Russian market, 9 hp engines come with a non-standard bolt pattern on the cover for the Ugra walk-behind tractor. Such an engine will not simply fit onto the adapter. But if you have an engine version with a standard bolt pattern, then it will do. How to understand which flange? It’s easier to buy a 13-15 hp engine, they are a little more expensive than 9 horsepower.
  2. Why is it so expensive? Adapters at MTZ are produced to order by literally one small enterprise throughout Russia.

Engine for walk-behind tractor Agro (Agros)

Another once popular walk-behind tractor with a Russian engine, which has been discontinued. But this is a solvable problem.

In order to select a new Agro walk-behind tractor engine you need:

  • Buy a special adapter for the Agro walk-behind tractor (Agros) for installing a modern engine
  • Select one of the suitable (with adapter) motors in this group

And that’s it, you can bet. Installation instructions will come with the engine, nothing complicated there.

Answers to common questions:

  1. Will it work with a 9 hp engine (Lifan 177F)? Very often on the Russian market, 9 hp engines come with a non-standard bolt pattern on the cover for the Ugra walk-behind tractor. Features and design

The Kaluga structure production plant is equipped with the most modern technological equipment to ensure the production of high-quality products. The products are distinguished by their versatility of use, economical operation, as well as reasonable prices for both the product itself and its spare parts.

The modern Kadvi walk-behind tractor is a structure equipped with mounted and trailed equipment. Using the unit, you can plow the ground, plant, harvest, move heavy loads, mow grass, and clear snow.

Due to the ability to switch power, the machine can be easily connected to various devices, for example, to a water pump.

The standard unit is represented by such elements as:

  • cylinder installation;
  • frame;
  • wheels;
  • steering wheel;
  • running gear.

Another modern walk-behind tractor

At the moment, there are hundreds of different brands of walk-behind tractors on the market - from market leaders like Brait, Patriot and Chamption to little-known brands that have sunk into oblivion as quickly as they appeared. But there is no reason to worry!

All these companies either order production directly from China or import engines and gearboxes separately and assemble the walk-behind tractor in Russia. One way or another, structurally Chinese walk-behind tractors are completely identical, regardless of the manufacturer.

The high level of standardization has led to the fact that choosing a new engine for a walk-behind tractor is not at all difficult, regardless of the brand of the walk-behind tractor.

All Chinese walk-behind tractors can be divided into two main groups:

  1. With belt drive (chain gear)
  2. With disc drive (with gear reducer)

The main visible difference is the engine location.

In belt-driven walk-behind tractors, the engine is located “on the side” . The key shaft goes in one direction, onto which the pulley is placed:

The following walk-behind tractors are belt-based: Brait BR-80, Neva, Patriot Kaluga.

For walk-behind tractors with a disc clutch, the engine is located front-facing:

Disc-based walk-behind tractors such as Brait BR-105, Patriot Nevada and Huter GMC-9.0

Modern walk-behind tractors with belt drive

In order to select an engine for a modern walk-behind tractor with a chain drive, you need:

  1. Measure the shaft diameter on an old engine (it will be either 19.05 or 20 mm, less often - 25 mm on 9 horsepower engines)
  2. Select a new motor with the same shaft size as the old motor

Motor problems

Engines running on different types of fuel (gasoline or diesel) have different service life. For engines using diesel fuel, it is much larger, but it is gasoline units that are popular due to their lower cost and ease of operation and repair.

Typically, of all faults, two main types can be distinguished:

  • startup problems;
  • problems with smooth operation.

Problems in the fuel system

The first thing you need to do is check the spark plugs. If they are dry, this may mean that gasoline is not getting to the engine. The main reasons will be: lack of fuel, the supply valve was closed, the hole in the tank plug is clogged, unnecessary objects get into the fuel system.

For maintenance you should:

  • refuel the walk-behind tractor;
  • unscrew the fuel supply valve;
  • clean the gas tank cap;
  • remove all gasoline from the tank, having first removed the fuel valve, and wash it with clean fuel. Then blow out the jets in the carburetor using the fuel supply pump.

When the candles are left wet

The following malfunctions are identified:

  1. The appearance of carbon deposits on the spark plugs. They should be cleaned with a rough surface and washed.
  2. The gap between the electrodes has been increased or decreased. You need to adjust it to the required size.
  3. Wiring insulation is damaged. It is usually replaced with a new one.
  4. There is a ground short to the STOP button.
  5. The ignition system starter is faulty.

The rubber carburetor seals may also become loose, causing air to be sucked in. It is necessary to tighten the bolts, spark plugs and inspect the gaskets between the cylinder and the spark plug head.

Another option for poor engine starting may be that the carburetor air damper does not close completely.

Candles in a walk-behind tractor should not be wet

If the compression is broken, it will also be difficult to start the engine. The reasons are: carbon deposits on the valves, the intake valve is deformed, or the piston rings are already worn out.

Problems during operation usually appear when the engine's node connections, subject to overload, fail, which leads to failures.

When the engine begins to pick up and slow down on its own, this is possible when the traction and the fastening of the levers are weakened. To eliminate this, simply adjust the control drive.

If the engine loses power, it means it has overheated. In this case, the engine may jam, which happens when the oil level in the crankcase is low, a nadir forms on the connecting rod head, or the oil squirter has become unusable.

Modern walk-behind tractors with disc drive

For Chinese walk-behind tractors with disc clutches, engines are used for splines (not for keys!). Such engines are much less common than engines with a key.

there are such engines , although, of course, the choice is much smaller than among engines with a key.

To select an engine for a walk-behind tractor with a disc clutch you need:

  1. Measure the shaft diameter on an old engine (usually there is a 25 mm shaft, but sometimes 20 mm is found on 7 hp engines)
  2. Select an engine for the splines according to the following rules: If you had an engine up to 7 hp, then choose 7 hp (don't forget to check the shaft diameter!)
  3. If you had a 9 hp engine, then choose 9 ds
  4. If you had an engine from 11 hp, then choose any engine with 11, 13, 15 or 17 hp
