DAF XF 95 is a family of heavy duty trucks made in Holland.
In Russia and the post-Soviet countries, this brand has not become widespread. Despite decent quality, specialized modernization for Russian operating conditions and the highest reliability, in terms of demand, DAF products are inferior to Mercedes and Iveco models. The DAF XF 95 truck, which has been produced for 30 years, remains the most popular in the brand’s line. It is this family that is considered the main one, and in Europe it successfully competes with “classmates”, and the only weak point of the car is its rather significant cost. In 2007, the car was recognized as the best truck of the year.
History and brief description of the model
The design of the car (especially the first generation DAF XF 95) really turned out to be quite laconic and unpretentious: a massive bumper and a radiator grille with classic stripes. The restyled versions already looked more interesting, although they also did not shine with any particularly elegant or “breakthrough” design.
In Europe, this model made competitors worry - if not for the high price tag, it could well be ahead of everyone in terms of sales in its segment. In Russia and the CIS, the DAF XF 95 is one of the leaders in the secondary market for heavy commercial equipment made in Europe. There have been no new trucks of this model for a long time: it was discontinued in 2007. It was replaced by the new flagship of the DAF company - DAF XF105.
The DAF XF 95 43O diesel engine provides stable operation even on diesel fuel of not very good quality: it is undemanding to the quality of diesel fuel. This ability to operate the truck even when refueling with low-quality fuel is an important competitive advantage of the DAF XF95 for domestic operators. Also, in conditions of poorly developed service centers and non-ideal road and climatic conditions, the truck performed very well. In terms of maintainability, this vehicle is only slightly inferior to simple domestic KamAZ and MAZ trucks.
The design of the truck of this model is based on the simplest and most popular 4x2 wheel arrangement - a two-axle chassis with rear axle drive. There are also three-axle versions of the DAF XF 95 (with a “lazy axle”), but they are much less common. The demand for Dutch tractors of this model in Russia began to grow in the early 2000s. The most popular option was the one with a power unit with a capacity of 430 horsepower. The name XF stands for “Extra Forte” - so to speak, “to the fullest.” (In total, in the traditional DAF production program there are three main families, divided by total weight: LF (Levis Forte), CF (Compact Forte) and XF (Extra Forte).
General information
The DAF XF 95 is a new family of trucks. However, the history of the series began in 1987. Then the Dutch brand presented the debut truck 95. In appearance and technical characteristics, it differed little from the models of that time. For the DAF brand, the model has become the flagship of the lineup. The first car 95 was positioned as a tractor intended for constant travel, designed for an annual mileage of over 150,000 km.
The design of the debut truck is again quite classic. The model was equipped with a large cabover operator’s cabin with “stripes” of the radiator grille, a huge brand inscription on the front and a bumper with standard headlights.
Despite its unassuming appearance, the car turned out to be very successful and was in stable demand on the world market. Thanks to significant sales, the Dutch brand has firmly established itself in the European car market.
DAF decided to modernize the tractor only in 1997. Then the premiere of an improved variation of the truck took place. In order not to confuse generations, the developers added additional markings to the name. Now the operator's cabin was decorated with the inscription 95 XF, meaning “extra forte” (“to the fullest”). With such a designation, the manufacturer decided to show the power and character of the truck. In the 1990s, the first Dutch cars appeared on the Russian car market. special equipment had a high cost, which immediately limited its distribution. However, the cars did not disappoint the owners and eventually paid for themselves quite quickly.
Soon, new versions of the DAF 95 XF appeared with an incredibly spacious Super Space Cab. The driver and passengers in it could move without bending over. The salon accommodated 2 berths connected by a staircase. One “sleeping bag” was accompanied by a folding structure made on the principle of carriage shelves.
The internal component has also undergone modifications. The greatest changes affected the motor range. Initially, the DAF 95 HF was offered with 12.7-liter engines with a power of 381-483 hp, but later 14-liter units with a power of up to 530 hp, corresponding to Euro-2, appeared in the line. The engine itself has also undergone global modernization. It was adapted to new conditions (metric system and 24 V instead of 12 V used in American versions). But the pickiness of the engines remained, which negatively affected the work of tractors in Russia. The engine running on domestic fuel was unstable.
In general, the successful design and high quality of finishing provided the new product with an additional audience.
In 2002, the tractor was updated again and changed its name to DAF XF 95. Only the XF designation was left on the radiator grille. The new product could be distinguished by a redesigned radiator grille with beveled edges that replaced the vertical edges. The side deflectors received an elongated aerodynamic shape, making them more efficient (the predecessor had shorter deflectors). The headlights were made narrower, and an additional opening was added to the plastic headlight casing to improve the airflow of the lower stage.
There are even more technical changes. The DAF HF 95 was built on a fundamentally new chassis with modernized Euro-3 power plants with increased torque. In the “minimum” version, the tractor was equipped with an advanced 16-speed ZF Servoshift manual gearbox.
Another important change was the ability to run on low-quality fuel. The latest DAF XF 95 series was created with an eye to working in Eastern Europe and the former CIS countries, which are characterized by unfavorable road and climatic conditions and undeveloped service networks. The developers tried to make the tractor as repairable as possible. According to this indicator, the DAF HF 95 practically caught up with MAZ and KamAZ cars, and an experienced driver could repair Dutch equipment right on the highway.
The DAF XF 95 was intended for transporting heavy loads over long distances. The developers paid increased attention to comfortable operating conditions. The model could work in any conditions and was distinguished by increased functionality. Due to these properties, even with high mileage, many consumers preferred the Dutch tractor.
What are the differences between the 95XF and the XF95?
They can be easily distinguished even just by their appearance. The first version has the full designation 95XF on the right side of the cabin, while the second has only the letter XF left, and it is already on the left. The radiator grille of the first version was completely straight, while the newer one has a slightly beveled lower part.
The side deflectors of the older car had an elongated shape, while on the successor they became shorter, but due to the optimal aerodynamic shape they were more efficient - not only the door handles, but also the side windows were no longer dirty. Changes have occurred in the headlights: they have become narrower. An additional opening was made in the plastic lining of the headlight to improve the airflow of the lower stage.
There are no less internal differences. Firstly, this is a completely new chassis. Modernized diesel engines that meet Euro-3 standards began to be installed on it, instead of the previous Euro-2. The maximum torque was increased by 50 Nm, which is especially useful for carriers who regularly operate this equipment in areas with hilly and mountainous terrain.
In addition to the 16-speed ZF Servoshift manual transmission as standard, you can now choose an electronically controlled 12- or 16-speed ZF AS Tronic transmission for an additional fee.
Drum brakes gave way to ventilated disc brakes both front and rear, and made the process of slowing down and stopping the road train noticeably more efficient. The EBS (Electronic Brake Sytem) dual-circuit braking system with a pneumatic drive received automatic clearance adjustment functions. The interior has also noticeably improved. Along with the modified instrument panel, the manufacturer began to use more expensive and high-quality plastic finishing materials.
DEVICE
The DAF HF 95 is rightfully considered one of the most reliable heavy-duty vehicles. The model is based on a durable frame that can support maximum weight. Some versions have a reinforced frame. Additional strength is achieved by increasing the thickness of the profile in the frame.
Chassis
The chassis of the DAF XF 95 is both simple and reliable. The car is equipped with spring front suspension with anti-roll bar and pneumatic rear suspension with stabilizer and ECAS technology, which allows you to control the suspension mechanisms. Some models with a 6 by 2 wheel configuration are equipped with an additional lift axle. With proper operation and maintenance, the chassis can withstand up to 650 thousand km even on poor quality roads.
In the initial version, the car is equipped with 295/80 R22.5 tires.
Transmission
Most versions of the DAF HF 95 are equipped with a ZF manual transmission, which is a 16-speed Servoshift gearbox with a separator. This transmission has a long service life and ease of control. The gearbox oil must be replaced every 90,000 km. The gear shift lever has a smooth and even move, but is not installed very conveniently and sometimes interferes with normal access to the sleeping area.
The car uses a single-plate clutch with a diaphragm spring and a hydraulic drive with pneumatic booster. The main gear is a single hypoid with differential lock. The DAF XF 95 clutch is considered an expensive element and is designed for 800,000 km. This element does not respond well to a partially depressed pedal, overload, and does not like frequent activation during slipping. The resource during such operation can be reduced by 50-60%. When replacing a clutch, it is recommended to buy the entire assembly.
Optionally for the DAF HF 95, 12- and 16-speed automatic transmissions ZF AS Tronic are available (gear ratio - 3.31). These gearboxes are more expensive and less reliable, but significantly increase the level of comfort in driving the machine and the service life of the unit due to precise shifting. Models with automatic transmissions traditionally enjoy low popularity among Russian consumers.
Brake system
Old modifications of the DAF 95 were equipped with drum brakes with rear hydraulic accumulators, an ABS system and a separate pneumatic drive. Since 2000, all versions have been equipped with electronically controlled ventilated disc brakes. The brakes act on the wheels of the front and rear axles. The brake efficiency of the DAF XF 95 has increased, and the service life is 45,000 km. It was recommended to replace the elements exclusively with original ones, since otherwise the service life would be sharply reduced. The latest models also get an EBS system with increased efficiency.
Cabin
The DAF HF 95 is equipped with a cabin with a spacious sleeping compartment, allowing you to travel for a long time without stress. The vehicle is standard equipped with a SpaceCab type cabin with a medium roof. In this configuration, the cabin height is 1885 mm. The internal dimensions allow you to move freely and not feel constrained in your movements.
An optional SuperSpaceCab cabin is available, which in terms of comfort is an order of magnitude higher than the basic version. The cabin height in this case is 2255 mm. The possibilities of this cabin are enormous - you can steer, stretch, stretch and move freely in it. The size of the beds is impressive. The bottom shelf is 810 mm wide and 2030 mm long. The width of the top shelf is 600 or 700 mm, length – 1910 or 2050 mm. Under the bottom place there is a spacious drawer for things. In its place you can install a small refrigerator or microwave.
All DAF HF 95 cabs have air suspension, which eliminates any vibrations. However, it does not tolerate long-term vibrations well, so it is more suitable for European roads. The air suspension may become unusable after 200-250 thousand km. The repair kit will save you from problems only for 1-2 years; the ideal option would be a complete replacement of the suspension, which will require considerable expenses.
The interior of the DAF HF 95 is very comfortable. The dashboard shows all the necessary data, and the large windshield allows you to fully control the situation on the road.
Repair and service
The DAF XF 95 is easy to maintain and repair. The car's cabin reclines to a large angle using hydraulics. The replacement intervals for elements on the machine are quite long. For fuel filters they are 25,000 km, for oil filters - 45,000 km, for engine sump gasket - 600,000 km. Conscientious maintenance will allow the car to operate up to 700,000-800,000 km without serious problems.
The transmission is considered the weakest point of the series. Typically, breakdowns of the secondary shaft bearing and satellites of the range sun gear occur.
Engine DAF XF 95 430
The truck is equipped with a diesel engine produced by the American company Paccar (which has been the owner of DAF since the late 90s) - Paccar-95.43O. This power unit is equipped with a UPEC injection system, which has injectors with electronically controlled pumps, thereby increasing the environmental friendliness and operating efficiency of the power plant. The diesel engine of the DAF XF 95 43O meets Euro-Z environmental standards.
This is a four-stroke, six-cylinder, in-line, liquid-cooled, turbocharged, 12-valve diesel engine. Its working volume is 116OO cubic centimeters (11.6 l). Compression ratio: 14.5:1. Cylinder diameter: 13O mm. Piston stroke: 146 mm. Rotation speed – 2300 rpm. Maximum torque – 19OO N.m.
The first versions of the XF 95 series were equipped with liquid pre-heaters, and later variations were equipped with autonomous heaters, with the function of heating the fuel tank. The oil change period for a truck is 9OOOO km.
Price
Currently, it is impossible to purchase a new DAF HF 95 tractor, since its production ended almost 10 years ago. There are still quite a lot of these models on the used market. Taking into account the significant reliability and excellent technical characteristics of the truck, purchasing it will be a good option for many consumers.
Cost of used versions of equipment:
- 1995-1996 – from 500,000 rubles;
- 2000-2001 – 1.5-1.7 million rubles;
- 2005-2006 - 2.1-2.4 million rubles.
Transmission DAF XF 95 430
As already noted, in the basic version the DAF XF 95 43O is equipped with a 16-speed ZF Servoshift manual gearbox. And as an option, these trucks were equipped with 16 and 12-speed ZF AS Tronic automatic transmissions (gear ratio - 3.31). Versions with automatic transmission are, of course, much more expensive, but have their undoubted advantages.
On long trips, the driver's concentration begins to decrease, and accordingly, the time to select the correct gear increases. And this leads to increased or greatly reduced revs, and incorrect gear selection.
The automatic transmission does not get tired and always selects the optimal gear. Only in mountainous areas does the driver sometimes need to intervene in the choice of gear. “Automatic” increases the service life of the engine due to more accurate switching, and facilitates the control process, adding comfort. The oil in the gearbox of this truck must be replaced every 90 thousand kilometers. The gear shift lever has a smooth and even motion.
The DAF XF 95 43O uses a single-plate clutch with a diaphragm spring and a hydraulic drive with pneumatic booster. The main gear is hypoid, single, with a differential locking function.
The DAF XF 95 clutch does not respond well to a partially depressed pedal, to overload, and does not like frequent engagement during slipping. With frequent use, the service life of this element can be noticeably reduced.
Truck modifications
The basic model of the DAF XF 95 was released back in 1987. Since then, the sought-after truck has undergone many technical changes. The initial version of the truck was equipped with 2 types of driver's cabins: SuperSpaceCab (a spacious cabin with sleeping shelves, 2.5 m high) and SpaceCab (a mid-size cabin designed within acceptable comfort requirements).
An improved version of the driver's cabin was equipped with a special gearbox, which significantly reduced the driver's efforts when driving the truck. Another component of the machine that has been replaced many times during the life of the basic version of the DAF XF 95 is the engine. Engine power increased, reaching 410–530 hp. With.
The chassis became the main load-bearing element, which the developers also did not ignore. The Daf model range is represented by the following combinations:
- wheel formula – 6×2, weight – 26 tons;
- wheel arrangement – 6×4, weight – 26.5 tons;
- wheel formula – 8×2, weight – 35.5 tons;
- wheel formula – 8×4, weight – 32 tons.
In 2005, an updated model of the DAF XF 105 truck was produced. Not only the technical capabilities of the engine and overall traction were improved, but also the internal and external design of the vehicle.

Suspension, chassis, brakes
The front suspension on the DAF XF 95 43O truck is of the spring type, with anti-roll bar. At the rear, pneumatics are installed, with anti-roll bar, which is also complemented by the ECAS system. It is used to control the suspension elements.
When the drum brakes in the tractor were replaced by more modern ventilated disc counterparts, this significantly increased the efficiency of the braking system. Old modifications of the DAF 95 were equipped with drum brakes with rear hydraulic accumulators, an ABS system and a separate pneumatic drive. The latest models also received an EBS system with increased efficiency. The brakes act on the wheels of the front and rear axles. Their service life is approximately 45OOO km.
The chassis of all DAF XF95s is quite simple and reliable. With proper care and timely maintenance on a new car, there will be absolutely no hassle for the first 6OO–65O thousand km. You can’t name specific service life for used cars: after all, it is unknown how correct the speedometer readings are, how and in what way the car was operated. DAF XF95 cars were equipped with 295/8O R22.5 tires.
Experience from intensive use shows that the DAF XF95 43O has an exceptionally robust frame. There is no mention of cracks or deformations. In the rear bogie, brackets, rods, and silent blocks “run” for a very long time. The standard seat height for the DAF XF95 without load is 114O mm (under load – 111O mm). To reduce the height, it is possible to reconfigure the initial suspension position at the company service to 2O mm below the base one. The result is 112O mm. In addition, you can order tires with a lower profile height, for example, 295/6O R22.5, and get 1O95 mm. For a minimum height of 95O mm, you will need a Low Deck tractor with continuously variable ECAS air suspension.
Features of operation
This car is lightweight and easy to maintain. If malfunctions occur while driving, the driver is able to independently adjust the work process. The ergonomic location of the engine compartment allows the driver to inspect the condition of the components of the DAF XF 95.
Daf 95xf - maintenance
At different stages of the mileage, it is recommended to replace some parts for further uninterrupted operation of the machine. At a mileage of 400,000 km, it is recommended to replace the brake system (to avoid its final wear). Some domestic roads are extreme driving environments with high levels of dust. Therefore, the moisture separator and air filter also need to be replaced during each seasonal maintenance.
Daf 95xf - brake system maintenance
Low quality fuel also brings its own rules to the maintenance regime for the DAF XF 95 truck. Low quality diesel fuel wears out the engine prematurely, which results in systematic failures. The machine can be protected from such defects by regularly updating the filters. It is recommended to change the oil filter at 45,000 km, and fuel filters after 25,000 km.
Changing your truck's oil filter regularly will increase engine life.
Proper and timely care of your Daf will help extend its life and reduce the frequency of technical inspections. With proper maintenance, the truck can travel up to 700,000 km.
Cabin DAF XF 95 430
Since the appearance of the second generation DAF XF 95 on the market, the manufacturer began to install on it a fundamentally new Super Space Cab - with a very significant amount of internal space and an internal height of 2255 mm. You can move around the cabin in it completely freely, without tilting your head. The cabin has two full berths, one of which has a folding design. The bottom shelf measures 2O3O mm x 810 mm, and the top shelf measures 1910 mm x 600 mm. Under the bottom shelf of the model there are spacious drawers.
Without the prefix “super” - just SpaceCab has a “medium roof”. Its internal height is 1885 mm. The large radiator grille of any type of cab is made of black plastic with horizontal holes. At the bottom of the cabin there are oval halogen optics with fog lights underneath. The profile of the DAF XF 95 cab is predominantly straight. There is a staircase with huge steps for easy entry. Massive rear-view mirrors leave virtually no blind spots.
The “bangs” on the windshield help out in the summer, protecting against exposure to sunlight. A retractable step on the radiator grille (“tongue”) makes it easy to clean the windshield. The cabin has two seats with the necessary set of mechanical adjustments.
The instrument panel is quite simple, but there is plenty of necessary information on it. There are six classic arrow indicators, with a large on-board computer monitor. To the right of the driver is a classic short gearbox selector lever, behind which is the parking brake lever. Even further to the right is a huge armrest with a table and two deep cup holders.
STORY
DAF HF 95 is a relatively new series of tractors, which officially debuted in 2002. However, the history of the car dates back to 1987. It was then that a well-known company from the Netherlands presented an interesting model under the symbol “95”. The new product has taken the place of the flagship in the brand’s product line. The DAF 95 was a classic truck of that period and did not stand out from the crowd of similar vehicles. At the same time, the model was positioned as a powerful tractor for regular transportation with an annual mileage of 150-200 thousand km. The design of the car turned out to be absolutely unpretentious: a cabover layout, a massive bumper and a radiator grille with classic stripes. Structurally, DAF 95 turned out to be very successful and had a stable demand.
The Dutch company did not want to change anything in such a successful project for a long time. The model was modernized only in 1997. The transformations turned out to be radical. In order not to confuse the predecessor with the new product, an additional inscription was introduced into the name of the series. The modernized truck entered the market with the DAF 95 XF index (XF stood for “Extra Forte” - “to the fullest”). This name emphasized new priorities in the development of the series - power and dynamics. European consumers liked the new product, and demand for DAF 95 HF began to grow rapidly. On the Russian market the situation was different. The Dutch product was not a cheap model; its high price limited its distribution. However, buyers who bet on the DAF 95 XF were satisfied as a result. The car paid for itself quickly enough.
Almost immediately after the appearance of the second generation, the manufacturer developed a fundamentally new Super Space Cab with a large amount of interior space. You could move around the cabin in it absolutely freely, without tilting your head. There were 2 sleeping compartments installed in the cabin, which were connected by a ladder. One of the berths had a folding design, made by analogy with the shelves of a train carriage.
Compared to its predecessor, the DAF 95 HF has undergone major modernization. The engine range has been completely revised. The base for the series was 12.7-liter units (381-483 “horses”). Later, the line was supplemented with 14-liter engines. The motors met Euro-2 requirements. Power plants for Dutch technology were produced in America, further adapting them to new conditions. Deep modernization made them more unpretentious, but when working on Russian fuel, the DAF 95 XF still often had problems.
In 2002, the series again underwent major changes. It was quite easy to distinguish the new product from its predecessor - now it was called DAF XF 95. The design of the model changed slightly, but instead of the previous designation 95 XF, only XF was left in the front part. The grille itself has changed, the vertical edges have been replaced by beveled ones. The headlights were made narrower, and the headlight trim received an additional opening to improve airflow. Instead of shortened side deflectors, the car was equipped with elongated deflectors of a special shape, which increases efficiency.
The technical component has also undergone modernization. For the DAF HF 95, a new type of chassis with improved units with high torque was developed. The power plants met Euro-3 requirements. In the basic version, the car was equipped with a new 16-speed ZF Servoshift manual transmission.
The units developed for the DAF XF 95 ensured stable operation on low-quality fuel. The latest generation of the family was positioned as a “workhorse”, intended for the countries of the former CIS and Eastern Europe. This region was characterized by underdeveloped service centers and poor road and climatic conditions. The developers took these features into account in the new DAF HF 95. In terms of maintainability, the model was only slightly inferior to domestic KamAZ and MAZ trucks. Experienced drivers performed minor repairs on Dutch cars right on the track. In terms of reliability and performance, the DAF XF 95 was an order of magnitude higher than most of its competitors.
Production of the series ended in 2007, but Dutch tractors have not lost their relevance today. In the brand's line-up, the model was replaced by more advanced versions - DAF XF 105 and DAF CF 95.
Some technical specifications in numbers
- Overall dimensions: length – 76OO mm; width – 24OO mm; height – 24OOmm; wheelbase – 36OO mm.
- Weight parameters: maximum permissible weight 18OOO kg, with the following load distribution - on the front axle 6OOO kg, on the rear axle 12OOO kg, on - 1331O kg. As part of a road train, the maximum weight of a vehicle can reach 4OOOO kg.
- Maximum speed – 95 km/h. Average diesel fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 34 liters per 1OO km.
- The capacity of the standard fuel tank is 56O liters of fuel.
Reviews of the DAF XF 95 430 model
In practice, the DAF XF 95 43O immediately proved itself well in terms of its reliability, profitability, quality and efficiency. Drivers appreciated the quality of the car's manufacturing and the high level of comfort of their work, and the owners of the transport business appreciated the quick payback. By the time these trucks were sold and new ones were purchased in return, it usually turned out that the residual value of DAF was significantly higher than that of a number of European “classmates”.
The reasons for its wide popularity among Russian carriers can also be explained by the minimal amount of on-board electronics and reasonable prices for original spare parts. Even the lack of a wide branded service network in Russia did not frighten us, thanks to the high maintainability of the trucks.
Used DAF XF 95 43O vehicles have long paid for themselves and, despite their significant age from a business point of view, continue to remain profitable, while for a number of other brands of trucks costs increase noticeably after 5 years of operation.
European transport companies do not wait for the period of high costs associated with the overhaul of the car to arrive, and sell it to us once the mileage reaches 65-70 thousand km. Both in Europe and the CIS, the average annual mileage of the DAF XF95 43O is 120–130 thousand km. In our country today there are hundreds of XF95s that have already traveled more than a million kilometers without major repairs.
Drivers in their reviews highly praise the equipment of the DAF XF95 cab. Especially if the car was received “stuffed” from European carriers. The cabin has everything for independent living on a flight of a week or more. Including a TV, walkie-talkie, electric kettle, microwave and the original DAF refrigerator! The cabin is warm, well noise-protected.
There is plenty of free space inside, and it’s pleasant to be inside the cabin; you feel like a “white man”. Tall windows provide significant visibility and safety at the same time/respectively. The cabin is installed on air springs, and because of this, the unevenness of Russian roads is practically not felt. In terms of cargo, this machine is also unpretentious. The scales carry 12.5 tons of cargo, and without scales – all 18 tons. This is a real hard worker, with a Euro-3 “tractor” diesel engine that eats any diesel fuel and does not cough. And for electronic “brains” - a minimum.
DAF XF 95 tractors have excellent access to the engine compartment, as the hydraulically raised cab tilts to a very significant angle. Maneuverability is excellent, as is the dynamics. The tractor quickly accelerates to the required speed both inside a metropolis and on a country road.
The first cars delivered to Russia had standard fuel tanks with a capacity of 560 liters of fuel. This seemed to be not enough for many carriers for our vast expanses. In connection with this, additional 350-liter tanks began to be mounted on the left. For some, this was not enough, and then they began to install a 550-liter tank under the truck with pumping using compressed air.
