Engineers of Zavolzhsky Motor Plant OJSC managed to develop and introduce a set of innovations into the unit. Among the non-standard design solutions, it is worth noting the reduction in the weight of the unit by almost 1.5 kilograms, this was possible due to the fact that the idle system was removed from the head of the device. The unit operates under the control of an electronic throttle; this solution made it possible to abandon the use of some parts.

Among them:

  • throttle pipe;
  • idle air pipes;
  • idle air control;
  • damper position sensor.

The cylinder block of the 405 engine is made of high-quality, highly durable cast iron; this choice of material, combined with the use of the most precise processing of the product, made it possible to significantly reduce the deformation of the cylinders during use. The old-style product had 2mm slits for air circulation. The modernized ZMZ-405 engine does not have them. Another important innovation was the increased size of the threaded wells for attaching the head.

Despite the significant reduction in mass, the block itself fully retained its original characteristics. In addition, its rigidity has increased somewhat. The casting elements located between the cylinders were removed due to the presence of horizontal slots in the cooling mechanism.

Another innovation was the improvement of thermal insulation of the cylinder block in the ZMZ-405 engine. To improve the tightness, the soft gasket made of one layer of non-asbestos material was replaced with a two-layer metal one. This update, combined with the use of new design details, for example, spring elements made in a zigzag shape, made it possible to achieve greater density at the junction of the gas outlet and the lubrication system, and also made it possible to make the cooling process more efficient. The improved gasket is 3 times thinner than the previously used soft product with a metal frame, its thickness is half a millimeter. This innovation has made it possible to minimize the need to tighten bolts, which reduces the risk of cylinder deformation during operation.
