Test drive and review of GAZon NEXT 10 tons: a truck that is not weak

In December 2022, the Gorky Automobile Plant began production of the GAZelle NEXT 4.6 and GAZon NEXT 10 heavy-duty models. The 4.6-ton model has a new rear axle of the “spicer” type and some other useful innovations. But the biggest surprise for experts was the GAZon’s carrying capacity of 5 tons and the ability to transport as many as 12 euro pallets.

The GAZon NEXT 10 medium-tonnage truck is already the fifth generation of trucks that roll off the GAZ assembly line. This is the most versatile commercial vehicle that can satisfy both the needs of entrepreneurs and public utilities. In addition, the frame allows you to add a side, an awning, a van, a dump truck, but that’s not all.

Don’t be confused, 10 tons is not the carrying capacity, it’s the total weight of the vehicle. What's new here?

To begin with, the new dimensions of the car:

The wheelbase has been increased by 635 mm, which is now 5800 mm. Compared to the C41R33 modification, the load capacity of the new GAZon NEXT 10 due to this solution has increased by 1 ton.

The width of the side platform on each side has been increased by 229 mm, which makes it possible to load two more pallets - a total of 12 pieces. The possibility of further modification of the loading platform will increase the capacity to 17 pallets or 45 cubic meters. m., and the carrying capacity will increase to almost 6 tons. The new “GAZON NEXT 10” has a pneumatic rear suspension and a reinforced front suspension from the “Vector NEXT”. Reinforced 4-leaf springs on the front and rear wheels provide maximum safety margin for the vehicle.

When talking about this car, one cannot ignore the shock absorbers and stabilizers, the first of which dampen vibrations, and the second provide stability and controllability.

The air suspension of the rear axle allows you to adjust the body height when loading/unloading and maintain it at a constant level while driving, regardless of the degree of vehicle loading, and also ensures a smooth ride even when driving on rough roads. The suspension is controlled by a remote control, which is conveniently located near the driver's seat.

The car was created for commercial needs, therefore, first of all, requirements for quality and uninterrupted operation are applied to it. What's wrong with the brakes? This is a very important point: the vehicle has an impressive load capacity, so the brakes must work at the proper level.

GAZon NEXT 10 has a completely new braking system from WABCO with pneumatic drive, designed for a 12-ton vehicle. There are ventilated disc mechanisms at the front and rear; in fact, to brake this car you need very little force on the brake pedal. The braking distance itself is small. ABS, ASR and EBD assist systems maintain control under extreme braking.

Wider 265/70R19.5 tires as standard (up from 245/70R19.5) provide a larger contact surface with the road surface.

Compared to the usual “LAWN”, the ten-ton truck has an increased power unit. The design of the YaMZ-534 engine was developed in partnership with AVL (Austria).

Engine power 170 hp with a torque of 662 Nm. The car has become 20 hp more dynamic, and the new CZ Turbo turbine makes overtaking on the highway safe.

GAZ workers took into account past mistakes and customer complaints, they revised the radiator mounts, now everything is clear and strong. That's not all! Engineers increased the size of the radiator and intercooler.

There is no usual “poker” in the cabin; this car has a neat gear shift joystick, due to which the ergonomics of the driver’s seat have become better. The joystick will seem familiar to you; a similar one is used in GAZelle NEXT. It’s immediately worth noting that in the absence of a large lever, the GAZon NEXT 10 has a lot of legroom. For men, this is a huge plus, you understand.

In addition, legroom in the passenger area has also increased. One shot killed two birds with one stone. Gears are changed here like in a regular passenger car; even a fragile woman can do everything here. This was achieved through new synchronizers, bearings, and sealed cuffs.

The ZF clutch and LUK central cylinder ensure minimal clutch pedal effort and travel. We slightly stepped on the accelerator pedal and the car started moving. If in numbers, then previously the force on the pedal was 15 kg, now it is 9 kg.

In the cockpit, the center panel is now oriented towards the driver, making it easier to access various buttons while driving, without the need to reach. The car has improved sound insulation. It is clear that the transport is specialized, there will never be such indicators as in a passenger car, but relative to similar trucks, there is perfect silence here.

Frame. All of you are interested in the durability of the frame and how it behaves when fully loaded. The new frame is made of steel grade 15YUTA instead of 07GBYU. Plus, the frame rigidity has been improved due to the optimal placement of cross members and reinforcements. The frame rigidity is 1.5 times better compared to GAZon NEXT 8.7, and the strength itself is 30% greater.

How can this truck attract consumers? Of course at a price! Not a single foreign competitor will provide transport with a similar carrying capacity with a price tag starting at 1 million 905 thousand rubles. Foreign analogues of GAZon NEXT 10 will cost much more.

The second and no less important competitive advantage is the cost of ownership. Spare parts for the products of the Gorky Automobile Plant are available in any, even the smallest locality, and the cost of the components is affordable to everyone.

A new model of the GAZon Next medium-duty truck with a gross weight of 10 tons, equipped with air suspension, was presented by the GAZ Group at the International Exhibition of Commercial Vehicles COMTRANS/17 in Moscow.

Compared to the lighter GAZon Next 8.7 model, which has been mass-produced since the fall of 2014, the new truck differs in its increased load capacity by 1 ton, increased front wheel track, extended wheelbase by 635 mm, rear air suspension, adjustable loading height, increased up to 2550 mm in width with an onboard platform (this allows you to place up to 12 Euro pallets in the body) and a higher power engine (170 hp instead of 149 hp). The use of modern technical solutions has made it possible to significantly expand the functionality, improve the ergonomics, comfort and driving performance of the new car.

One of the main design features of the new product - the air suspension of the rear axle - allows you to adjust the height of the body during loading/unloading and maintain it at a constant level while driving, regardless of the degree of loading of the vehicle, and also ensures a smooth ride even when driving on broken roads. The suspension is equipped with Monroe hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar.

The car's braking system is pneumatic, with disc mechanisms on all wheels, with ABS and ASR functions. The installation of an additional braking system - an engine brake (retarder) - made it possible to increase braking efficiency, especially when driving on mountain roads and steep descents, and to reduce wear on the brake pads.

Increasing the power of the YaMZ-534 diesel engine to 170 hp and the maximum torque to 664 Nm led to an improvement in the traction and dynamic characteristics of the vehicle and a reduction in fuel consumption.

The gearbox is controlled using a remote drive (joystick), which is located on the dashboard. The car presented at the COMTRANS/17 exhibition is equipped with a 6-speed gearbox of the GAZ Group’s own design. Serial production of the new box will begin in 2019.

The spacious and comfortable GAZON Next cabin is equipped with a sprung driver's seat with anatomical support, five levels of adjustment and lumbar support, a 2DIN radio with control keys on the steering wheel and a Delphi climate system with a heated windshield function. The cabin is made of double-primed galvanized steel, and the wings and wheel arches are made of high-strength plastic, which provides a high level of corrosion protection.

Externally, the cabin of the new model differs from the lighter version of the GAZon Next 8.7 by wide wheel arches, a wide bumper and a new anti-roll bar.
