The KAMAZ 6520 dump truck can operate successfully both in urban conditions and in construction quarries. The truck is equipped with a modern power unit with a capacity of 320 hp. paired with an eight- or sixteen-speed ZF gearbox and has a reinforced frame and axles with side gearboxes, which allows the KAMAZ 6520 to be effectively used for heavy-duty transportation.
When was the KamAZ 6520 dump truck created?
The history of the creation of the KamAZ 6520 dump truck began in the late 80s. At that time, there were trucks on the market with a maximum load capacity of up to 15 tons. And the market demanded more powerful cars. And KAMAZ engineers began to create a fundamentally new car, which became the founder of a new family.
The KamAZ-6520 prototype first appeared in 1996. The main areas of application of the new dump truck were construction, agriculture and small quarries designed to provide materials for the construction and road construction industries.
Important! KamAZ-6520 was designed from scratch. It is not a duplicate of vehicles produced by other manufacturers or an upgrade of existing heavy-duty trucks.

In this review, I want to share my first impressions of operating the KAMAZ 6520 mining dump truck. Our truck has been in service for a little over a month, the mileage is approaching 10 thousand km, although it is not yet the peak operating season, the mileage is quite respectable. We drove the car in rain and snow, skidded in quarries, tried the car on narrow streets and in “tight” courtyards, so I think we have something to talk about. The car’s cabin is on air springs, quite comfortable (everything is done well, nothing anywhere does not rattle, does not creak, the plastic is of quite high quality), the instrument panel has changed a little (it reads perfectly), the driver’s seat is very comfortable, there were no complaints about the operation of the autonomous vehicle, the sleeping bag is quite large and comfortable, in a word, the comfort of the car has improved. Driving at the proper level. The cabin itself is painted quite well, which cannot be said about the body; after a month of use, “saffron milk caps” appeared on the body. The headlight unit is decent, we drove in rain, snow, day and night, the headlight light is excellent, and in combination with “ fogs" is simply beautiful. The power unit on this Kamaz vehicle (the usual eight), reinforced by the Colin Reees system, as the practice of operating the vehicle has shown, the engine is decent (high-torque and quite playful), fully copes with its task, the car is quite sufficient, the sound of the engine is pleasant. Our KamAZ is equipped with a ZF-16 “box” (a divider is installed for each gear), which gives a huge advantage to the vehicle’s performance. This combination of “box” and engine leaves only positive impressions (the car doesn’t seem to feel the entire load placed on it, the car works without any strain). The axles remain the same Kamaz ones with locks, they work flawlessly. The brakes are quite “sharp” and require getting used to driver in the process of work. The body, as expected, is equipped with heating, the mechanism is quite “serious”, 4-speed cylinder. When unloading the cargo of the body, when the clutch is pressed, the body begins to smoothly lower. The spare wheel is suspended on the frame (an extremely controversial solution for mining dump trucks), but during operation there were no problems with this. The battery box, in my opinion, was made extremely poorly, the battery “stand” on top of each other, which creates some inconvenience in their maintenance. It is also not clear why the cabin “lift” was moved to the right front fender (although there is enough space for it at the back of the cabin), when the car is used it is constantly in the mud. So how the car’s radiator “hangs” quite low, a protection appeared, but it’s not clear why three slits were made on it (almost 5 cm wide), after the 1st trip to the quarry, the radiator was all clogged with dirt (I had to weld all these slits with corners , the protection became stronger, and dirt stopped getting in). After the appearance of the “sleeping bag”, it was impossible to get to the coolant barrel without raising the cabin. The brake valve was moved from the frame to the front of the cabin. In general, after the first time of using the car, the impression was positive, there were no problems with the car, finally “our” Kamaz trucks are reaching the proper level and can fully compete with their Western counterparts.
Type of dump truck
KamAZ 6520 is a truck with a 6x4 wheel arrangement. The dump truck has family features of trucks from the Kama Automobile Plant, which ensures excellent recognition. A dump body with rear unloading is mainly used as a superstructure. For agricultural needs, the machine is equipped with a body with the possibility of side unloading. The body rollover is controlled from the driver's cab.
There are other options for tipper superstructure. So, in 2007, the body was equipped with a heating system, which became an effective solution for working in the cold season. The body itself is equipped with a canopy over the cab for driver safety.
The components and components of the dump truck are designed for harsh operating conditions. The driver's cabin acquired features characteristic of cars of this family, and new lighting fixtures appeared. Improvements also made it possible to make boarding and disembarking the driver and passengers more comfortable.
Description of the truck cabin
Since the start of production of the KamAZ-6520, the comfort and appearance of the cabin have been improved. Now it has a more modern look, additional options have appeared.
Looking into the interior of the dump truck, you can see an adjustable driver's seat, an audio system, and an ergonomic dashboard. There is a small cup holder on the side of the driver, and an island table on the front right. Air conditioning can be installed as a special option.
The cabin itself is located above the power unit and is equipped with air suspension. The salon has a high roof and three seats. But the window lifts are still mechanical.
Technical characteristics of the KamAZ-6520 dump truck
The KamAZ 6520 dump truck body can accommodate 12 cubic meters, and with special add-ons, all 20. The largest capacity of 33 cubic meters was achieved in the “Grain Voz” model.
Technical parameters and dimensions of the truck:
- overall length – up to 7.8 m;
- width – 2.5 m;
- height – up to 3.1 m;
- wheelbase - 3.6 m;
- front overhang – 1.32 m;
- load capacity – 20 tons;
- trailer weight – up to 20 tons;
- total vehicle weight – up to 33.1 tons;
- load on the rear axle - 25.6 tons, on the front - 7.5 tons;
- platform lifting angle for cargo transportation – 50 degrees;
- the total weight of the road train is up to 53.1 tons.
Engine
From the beginning of serial production, engines of the Euro 2 environmental standard were installed on the car. In 2009, some of the cars produced were equipped with KamAZ-740.63-400 power units, Euro 3 standard. The power of this engine was 400 hp, and the working volume was 11.76 liters .
Now the dump truck is produced with a V-shaped eight KamAZ-740.735-400 with a power of 400 hp. Ecological class of the motor is Euro-5.
Additional Information!
The fuel tank holds 350 liters. Fuel consumption for KamAZ 6520 can average 46 liters per 100 km, and in winter it can increase to 53 liters
Transmission
The car's transmission gives it good traction and dynamic performance. A single-disc diaphragm clutch and a hydraulic drive with pneumatic booster are installed here. The dump truck is equipped with a mechanical 16-speed gearbox ZF-16S1820, the gearbox ratio of which is 5.11.
Suspension
The dump truck has a spring suspension with anti-roll bars to improve road stability. Planetary wheel reduction gears on the drive axles reduce wear, and increased ground clearance helps when driving in the field or quarry.
Increased cross-country ability was also achieved by blocking cross-axle differentials. The technical equipment of the dump truck and its reliable chassis help it safely overcome any difficult road conditions.
Brake system
Drum brakes with pneumatic drive. An anti-lock brake system is installed to control the control of the machine.
Test drive of the KAMAZ-6520 Lux dump truck
Details Category: Test drive Published 07/28/2016
A test drive of new KAMAZ dump trucks took place today in Kazan. We were able to test the new KAMAZ-6520 Lux dump truck.
KAMAZ-6520 is the first dump truck of the heavy family from Naberezhnye Chelny. Sales of the first “twenties” started back in 2001. The index “20” meant that the car could carry up to 20 tons of cargo.
In 2010, the model underwent restyling - there were cosmetic changes in the design and interior. However, the car has not changed significantly. One of the main drawbacks remains - the outdated cabin.
And in 2016, the KAMAZ-6520 Lux dump truck was released.
Despite the same name, in fact, this is a completely new car.
The main difference that first catches your eye is the new cabin.
It, like the KAMAZ mainline vehicles, was created in partnership with Daimler. Unlike highway trucks, the KAMAZ-6520 has a low cab and no berth. This is because dump trucks, in principle, are not designed for long trips, but are operated, most often, within the region.
Nevertheless, the cabin here is comfortable - cannot be compared with the previous one.
The driver's workplace is already familiar to us from other new generation KAMAZ models - the same combination of instruments, controls, etc.
The doors also have storage compartments and cup holders.
At the top of the cabin there are compartments and shelves for things.
Since the cabin is located quite high, an additional suspended step has appeared at the bottom of the cabin for convenient climbing.
At the same time, the high seating position and large mirrors provide excellent visibility for monitoring the situation on the road.
The driver's seat is on an air cushion, which dampens vibrations and shocks from the road.
There are steps in the bumper that you can climb up to clean the glass or replace the wipers.
The suspension of the KAMAZ-6520 Lux is spring, not pneumatic: it is cheaper and more reliable for the conditions in which dump trucks are operated.
Another big external difference between the model and the previous one is the new dump body. If earlier KAMAZ dump trucks had an inclined front side and a vertical rear side, then here everything is the other way around: the front side is vertical, and the rear side is inclined.
This solution allows for a more even distribution of loads across the axles.
On the left side of the body there is a folding ladder for access to the body. There is also a canopy with a mechanism for folding the awning, as well as heating of the dump platform with exhaust gases.
The aggregate base of the dump truck also differs from other models of the new generation. If a Daimler engine is installed there, then there is a KAMAZ-740.632-400 “eight” with a power of 400 hp. The engine is paired with a 16-speed ZF gearbox.
The drive axles here are also KAMAZ axles, with a double main gear. The load capacity of the dump truck has also increased - from 20 to 22 tons.
The test drive route included both public roads and dirt roads.
The powerful engine has a good reserve of torque - an empty dump truck moves off easily even from fifth gear. The ZF gearbox traditionally operates according to the “double H” scheme, with two neutrals. Driving in neutral with such a gearbox is prohibited.
The car easily overcomes steep climbs, even in high gears.
After driving off the asphalt, we were able to test the driver's working conditions on rutted dirt roads and rough terrain. Despite the fact that the cabin here is mounted not on air springs, but on shock absorbers, the cabin is quite comfortable even when driving through deep holes. Apparently the seat air suspension does its job well.
To climb a hill, it is enough to shift into a lower range of gears, from fifth to fourth. If you keep the gas pedal pressed to the floor, the car confidently climbs up the mountain, meter by meter.
In general, the KAMAZ-6520 Lux gives you confidence behind the wheel. You sit high, on a seat with air suspension, a powerful engine - all this allows you to drive like a tank, not paying attention to road irregularities.
By the way, there is also an air conditioner, which is indispensable when driving on a dusty road - you can turn it on and completely close the windows.
The only thing you need to get used to are the brakes. The pedal travel is quite large, but you need to work with it carefully, otherwise the car will stop dead in its tracks.
Otherwise, there are no problems with driving - even yesterday's driving school graduate can handle it. The main thing is not to forget that the car is almost 8 meters long, and even empty weighs as much as 13 tons...
By the way, why does it seem that the new model is called by the old one? This was done to simplify the certification process, which is why the model is called 6520, but with the Lux prefix.

Reviews about KAMAZ 6520
Max, take off the heads, there is a microcrack somewhere, we found it in 3 of the 8 heads.
The body doesn't work well, change the oil and VMGZ filter. Help, the hand brake is difficult to remove from the KAMAZ 6520, 400 horses.
People! Kamaz 6520 throws out antifreeze, the stove is cold at times! The piston is normal, the pump was removed, it works, the pressure in the tank is high and the temperature fluctuates. What could it be ? When you go up, the heat comes out of the stove, and when you go down, the stove is warm and the antifreeze comes out. Tell me, what is the reason?
Hello, can you tell me what is the best choice of pads for working in a quarry? A miner was standing on a KamAZ 6520, the oil was pressing on him, he removed it, and now the pads are burning. What can be done to the miner to prevent the oil from pressing?
It’s difficult to call this… a man with brains a KAMAZ. Half of the sensors are imported and God forbid, one of them fails... It can’t pull itself up a hill, much less a trailer. We work in a quarry, and this miracle only causes tears of bitterness at the beginning of the shift and tears of joy at the end of the shift. Every day something.
A brief example in 15 days: middle axle, pump injector, cylinder head, exhaust manifold gasket. This does not take into account previous problems with shift workers. Every single day you wonder what else might burst, fall off, short circuit. Yes, we may load more than the required 20 tons, but this is a quarry - you will never load exactly 20 tons. Or more or less, the shoulder is 3-5 km.
A huge request, if anyone from the manufacturer’s plant is reading my review, please know that such perverts should be prohibited from even reproducing. Electronics for a mining machine, fluoroplastic bushings, plastic tubes and other small things installed in places where only a hand without bones or joints can operate a key. Tubeless in a quarry is generally an indescribable joy - there will be a shot on both wheels at once and guess why? But because of a stone that got stuck between the wheels. There is no such problem with chamber cameras.
Shouldn't I check or add oil? Need to. Only earlier this did not cause problems on old KamAZ trucks (apparently the responsible engineer/designer was working at that time). Now, without getting dirty, nothing will come of it. The air filter, its exhaust pipe and lower batteries are to blame for this. You have to climb to the top.
They created a crap car, the 6520, very crap. Among the advantages that do not cause problems are only the checkpoint is German and the power steering is also fascist. That's it, I'm switching off, otherwise I'll start writing obscenities now.
6520 2004, bought not new, replaced the cylinder block, piston turbine. At 100,000 the liner burst, the pads riveted, I drive 25-30 tons, fuel consumption is 37 liters per round. Injection pump Kamaz E2, installed front 4-leaf springs, it became softer, but began to pump more - we need to install 5-leaf springs, I think it should be more efficient. In principle, the car is not bad, but it loves care, there are more than enough little things. The injection pump should be made 36 cubic meters - then there is an effect and the consumption is less.
Kamaz 6520 e-3 mileage 190,000, At 15 t.km, both turbines were replaced, the oil was not driven in Swiss, the impeller was touching, at 30 t.km, the front end was replaced with loaves due to wear and tear + the left turbine was replaced again, the e-2 was installed with the same one, 80 t.km replacement of balancers + modification, installation of oil seals, grinding of axles from rust - filled with oil, 130 t.km, replacement of rear pads + one oil seal, play on the hubs, 140 t.km, replacement of rear tires (started to slam), 150 t.km, replacement of the front end tires, both turbines for original reasons - one jammed, 170 t.km replacement of 4 cylinder heads + balancers again (one is normal, the second was eaten away due to rust).
When they left the factory without seals, the axle was corroded, now it is not smooth, but corroded by rust. Grinding the first time did not help, with oil it is rust-free - like new, there is not even wear, only a maximum of 1 mm on the bushings. At 190,000 km the front began to jam, the bushings turned, the support bearings sank heavily and there was play on the hubs + the pads ran out. Little things - gaskets under the exhaust manifolds five times without a miner, the exhaust pipe from the turbine ten times - operation with a trailer, total tonnage 55-60.
Conclusion - KAMAZ is specially assembled in order to constantly change something, without repairs you can drive a maximum of 10 thousand km, little things were taken out every day. I pulled the gaskets under the manifolds almost every day. I do maintenance every 10 thousand km, the car simply won’t last longer, something will fall off or fail. Conclusion - yes, you can drive, the price is low, but in terms of breakdowns, the price at the end of operation will be much higher than that of a foreign car + fuel consumption is very high, compared to a foreign car: 53 without a trailer, 62 with a trailer. The breakdowns can be continued endlessly, I’m too lazy to write, or rather not breakdowns, but about pull-ups, welding, welding and much more.
Oleg writes on July 31, 2015: Alexander, you will probably get a dead KAMAZ. On KAMAZ 6520-73 produced in 2013, the seats are ideal, height, softness, lumbar, back are adjustable - all with buttons. If you load 20 tons, and not 27-30 as everyone carries, and then complain that it is spilling, 20 tons is 13-14 cubic meters of sand, a little more than half the body. At the same time, it does not creak, does not crack, it flies 100 km per hour untethered, the brakes are good, with a trailer there is still + 20 tons, for a total of 40 tons.
How can a KAMAZ 6520 be tied, its speed goes off scale when you try to drive 100 km/h from a mountain, what kind of limiter could still be on it, without consequences for the engine, you can drive it at a maximum of 85 km/h, and so that the consumption is 50 didn’t exceed - maximum 70...
I worked on this misunderstanding. On a slippery road the car is generally helpless. The base is long, and it itself is heavy, making it difficult to swing. There are no words at all. The engine is powerful, but put together disgustingly. As people have already asked why it is heating up, but cold is blowing out of the stove - this is due to air locks in the system. Off-road, you can easily damage your kidneys and even get an intervertebral hernia. In general, in my opinion, there are more disadvantages than advantages. Now I work for Inter - it’s absolutely beautiful.
Alexander, you will probably end up with a destroyed KAMAZ.
I drove a 65115 with a 32t trailer, it was manufactured by Chelnovsk LLC “RIAT”. Mazovskaya electronic six with 25.0 l brains, Kamaz gearbox with divider, Euro2 axles in general. Without a trailer, the loaded vehicle started off with third gear reduction. Remember the Zils, Lawns, Mazas, iron Urals, Krazys - the safety margin is 2.3 times, otherwise you’re used to foreign cars. In the 90s, on the GAZ-53 with a booth, the products were supplied with an MTZ-80 engine, a 130th gearbox and tires on the rear + a main pair of 2 teeth, and on the route Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ivanovo, Yaroslavl, Tambov...
For reference, our front-wheel drive was invented in the 60s; the Maz plant invented the sloth suspension axle. Renault Magnum is a Maz developed in the 80s, the lower part of the cabin turned on it along with the wheels, headlights and engine, it is in the Maz Museum in one copy.
They screwed up the USSR, there are only private traders all around, it sucks to work with them. They even want to supply imported engines to Dakar KAMAZ. We bought decommissioned components and ended up with a new white KAMAZ tractor 5490, probably the only thing left was its frame. There were so many developments and modifications, all the factories were demolished and sold. I want to go back to the USSR!
Modifications of KamAZ 6520
During the production of the dump truck, more than a dozen modifications of this model were manufactured, differing slightly in design and configuration. The first four-axle vehicles were developed - KamAZ-6540 with a capacity of up to 18.5 cubic meters and KamAZ-65201, carrying up to 25 cubic meters of cargo.
Models with three-way unloading KamAZ-6520-06 and KamAZ-6520 truck tractor were also developed for operation as part of a road train.
