Schmitz semi-trailers: general information and characteristics

About the manufacturer

Production began in 1892 with a cart assembly forge established by Melchior Schmitz and his family in Altenberg. By the 20s of the last century it had become a craft workshop, which produced its debut trailed model in 1928. Closer to the mid-30s, the assembly of trailers and semi-trailers was established.

Since 1978, Schmitz anhanger products have been exported to international markets. Since the 80s, the work of factories in Altenberg and Berlin has been rapidly developing. In 1991, production of technical products began in the UK.

Large-scale development of the enterprise occurred in the early 2000s, when serial production began to generate significant income. There are already 9 enterprises operating in Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania and Spain.

Activities are developing in the Russian Federation: a central warehouse of spare parts and sales services have been opened in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad. Since 2006, there has been a representative office in Moscow, and since 2013, production began in St. Petersburg.

The official representative office of the company is located in the city of Horstmar.

Corner bumper

The corner guard, installed at the corners of the frame at the rear of the trailer, is designed to protect the trailer from contact with the ramp. And not only from a collision with it during maneuvering, but also from vertical movements during loading and unloading operations when the loader enters and exits. These bumpers usually come in three types: standard solid rubber, steel, or double rubber rollers. Similar fenders are included in the specifications of almost all manufacturers and are installed at the request of the customer. It should be taken into account that the standard bumper, made in the form of a rubber cushion, usually has the shortest service life, since it often breaks off during vertical movements of the semi-trailer when it is firmly resting on the ramp or if some obstacle is encountered along its path during movement.

General characteristics of Schmitz semi-trailers

International cargo transportation is available due to compliance with standards in EU countries. The distinctive advantages of Schmitz semi-trailer products are high-quality disc brakes, durable tires, significantly lower curb weight of some models, and air suspension designed for loads of up to 40 tons.

Semi-trailer from Schmitz.

The manufacturer produces all components, except the coupling part, independently, especially reinforcing the floor and frame. A meter long semi-trailer can support 8 tons.

An innovative feature of the devices is the technology of using ferroplast panels, which ensure maximum reliability of cargo transportation at a given temperature. More details can be seen on the website.

The blocks have impeccable insulation characteristics due to their unique composition, because the outer layer is made of galvanized steel, and the inner layer is made of polyurethane foam. Universal production technology involves the installation of additional elements, fasteners for food products, and guides for two-tier loading.

The latest modifications have significantly improved frame spars with additional reinforcing consoles, and the level of chassis rigidity has been upgraded. Improved technology ensures uniform mechanical load on the semi-trailer frame when moving, making the transportation process stable and confident.

It is important to know that the VIN number is located on the frame on the front right side of the semi-trailer. Its decoding provides information about the release date, country of manufacture, engine data, and allows you to identify the vehicle.

Purpose and benefits

The intended purpose of the brand's semi-trailers is to ensure the safe delivery of cargo of various sizes over long distances. The Schmitz technique is a universal solution, because it is adapted to any type of transportation.

Schmitz Cargobull products combine a number of advantages:

  • simplicity of design;
  • development taking into account the specifics of roads;
  • manufacturing using the latest technologies;
  • a variety of modifications with an affordable price range;
  • the ability to transport several types of cargo;
  • updated brake system;
  • use of heavy-duty galvanized fastening bolts and high-quality components;
  • saving time when loading in double-tier loading mode;
  • versatility, durability, wear resistance.

It is worth noting that certain types of semi-trailers have axles with low, medium or high ground clearance. The presence of Multi Ride Height air suspension ensures good tire grip on the road, regardless of the load level. The ECAS electronic control system is able to raise and lower the attachment, adapting it to the height of the ramp.

Design Features

Schmitz semi-trailer with its own axle.

Constant development in the field of production innovations continuously modernizes individual parts and assemblies, optimizes suspensions, increasing their functionality.

The Schmitz semi-trailer is created using its own axles, which quickly adapt to non-ideal road conditions.

The modified axle mounting design, which does not involve welding, but is attached with bolted ladders and pressed in with tension, has become easier to operate.

The work of specialist developers to strengthen frames ended with the appearance of a new product called SPR+. The frame of the models sold received additional reinforcement; the metal of the side members became much thicker.

To replace the double hinge hinges on the rear gates, the repair of which required knocking out the entire post to remove one hinge, single hinges are installed that are easy to use and easy to repair.

To reduce corrosion, only riveted and bolted connections are intended, as an alternative to welded ones. When repairing a weldless structure, one component can be quickly replaced.

The chassis of Schmitz semi-trailers is equipped with updated disc brake equipment and powerful air springs that strengthen the suspension system.

The brake module has an additional program for monitoring correct loading, securing the load, the position of the center of gravity, and pressure on the axle. Its automatic activation makes it possible to determine the likelihood of the trailer part turning over before the driver and to apply braking. Low heating creates conditions for proper operation of the brakes.

A larger range of equipment is created on the basis of the ROTOS chassis, which harmoniously synthesizes air springs, shock absorbers, brake discs, bearings and axles. The reduced axle tonnage significantly reduces the weight of the structure and fuel consumption. The weight of the product directly depends on the configuration. A Schmitz tilt semi-trailer of a simple configuration can weigh about 6 tons.

A customs TIR certificate is issued for curtain-sided, flatbed, tilt semi-trailers. Other models are given XL certification, which is only suitable for models with a reinforced awning and the ability to withstand a load of 11 tons.

Back wall

Instead of a valve closing the rear portal of curtain-sided semi-trailers, gates have long been installed, although even now any carrier can order a tent with a valve. Installing a gate instead of a valve provides two benefits. This reduces the loss of time for unlacing and lacing the flap during loading and unloading operations (the doors can be opened much faster), and in addition, the rear gate is one of the elements that protects the cargo from theft, because most often cargo is stolen from a semi-trailer by cutting the rear flap, often right on the go.

Kögel began to make a free-fitting hinge on the gate, which does not rest against anything at the top point, but simply rises and sits in place

Installation of rear gates, which can be either steel or aluminum, costs approximately 600...1000 euros. Aluminum gates are made from stacked strips, while steel gates are all-welded. Steel gates are slightly cheaper, but about 80 kg heavier. At the same time, they are stronger and easier to repair if damaged.

An important element of the rear gate, which causes the greatest number of complaints, is its hinges (curtains). Until recently, the most common were hinges built into doors (cut out), which were attached to a solid axis. This design met all customs requirements, but suffered from one “small” drawback: during operation, the axles became tightly stuck at the points of contact with the rack and it was almost impossible to knock them out to replace the hinges or bushings. In addition, if the hinge is cut and rigidly fixed against movement, and the driver does not tighten the doorway with straps diagonally, on bad roads the gate begins to move up and down. And the place where the hinge enters is broken, especially in aluminum gates, and the hinge is often simply cut off. And the rigid fastening of the doors does not allow replacing the bushings in the hinges, which seriously complicates their repair.

Now this problem has been solved by almost all manufacturers. For example, Kögel began to make free-fitting hinges on gates. In this case, the loop does not rest against anything at the top point, but simply rises and sits in place. The hinges themselves have bushings - plastic for Europe and brass for the CIS countries, which are easy to replace by removing the door from the curtains. At the same time, on Krone semi-trailers the hinge is rigidly fixed from moving, but is built into the steel portal, and its axle can be pulled out in a matter of seconds, and durable steel gates keep the portal from loosening.

On Krone semi-trailers with steel rear gates, the hinge is built into the steel portal and is rigidly fixed against movement, and its axle can be pulled out in a matter of seconds

Varieties

Schmitz curtainsider semi-trailer.

Depending on the scope of cargo transportation, purpose, and type of cargo, different types of equipment are used. The dimensions and dimensions of Schmitz semi-trailers play an important role in the classification of the product range.

Tents (curtains)

The Schmitz curtain-side semi-trailer (S01) is used for general purpose transportation without observing a special temperature regime. The cargo is protected by a waterproof awning made of durable PVC, which moves like a curtain, is easy to clean, and is resistant to corrosion.

The design is able to control the loading length. The process of opening and closing the trailer is simplified due to flexible corners on the front wall of the device.

Overall dimensions are about 13620 mm in length, 2480 mm in width, side height - 620 mm.

The final load capacity depends on the number of axles. There can be from 1 to 3. The frame is made of durable metal and treated with an anti-corrosion compound. The inside of the body is reinforced with a frame that can be easily dismantled if necessary. The basic configuration includes parking supports, side wheel chocks, spare tire holders, and a tool box.

Refrigerators

The SKO 24 series refrigerated semi-trailer is designed for transporting products with a short shelf life that require a special temperature regime. For this purpose, the body is equipped with a refrigeration unit, sandwich panels with high thermal insulation properties, resistant to precipitation and high humidity.

Depending on the thermal conductivity coefficient and wall design, the model range consists of samples:

  • SKO COOL, made of Ferroplast sandwich panels, 60 mm thick, with Carrier or Thermo King cold generation units;
  • SKO FRESH, used for transporting fruits, flowers, bakery products;
  • SKO EXPRESS is a model at the most affordable prices.

Refrigerators are characterized by long service life, ease of maintenance and repair. Special axles to optimize wheel travel reduce tire wear, reduce fuel consumption, and increase the service life of working units and tires.

Tipper

The tipper version (SKI) was created for agricultural and construction needs, transportation of bulk materials with low density (coal, crushed stone, earth, etc.). A dump semi-trailer is 2-2.5 times cheaper than a truck with the same body volume, and can transport 1.5-2 times more cargo under equal conditions.

The samples differ from each other in technical parameters.

The appearance is influenced by the following criteria:

  • unloading method (side or rear);
  • constituent material (steel or aluminum);
  • lifting capacity and availability of axles (up to 25 tons - two-axle, up to 35 tons - three-axle and up to 45 tons - four-axle);
  • body shape (semicircular or square);
  • capacity (cubic capacity of light bulk cargo - 26-28 m³, coal - 35 m³, heavy rock - 50-60 m³).

Other types

Schmitz fuel semi-trailer.

The equipment produced includes proven and popular flatbed semi-trailers with a carrying capacity of up to 45 tons, as well as high-strength tanks made of alloy steel for the delivery of low-hazard and hazardous substances.

These include cement tankers, gas carriers, bitumen tankers, fuel tankers with a pipeline network for drainage, shut-off devices, pumping units, valves and filters.

The range includes container ships of various designs and capacities, popular in international road transport, with a carrying capacity from 17 to 30 tons.

Load fastening

1. Cross beams for securing cargo with kinematic closure for partial loading can be suspended from the racks and side supporting beams of the double-tier loading device. 2. Tightening belts are securely fixed to the longitudinal load-bearing beams. 3. Without displacement at height: the longitudinal supporting beam also serves as a side support for the pallet. 4. Stabilizing diagonal struts on the front and rear walls,... 5. ...serving for loading with kinematic closure, can be easily removed without any tools. 6/7. The side brace of the forklift allows loading with kinematic closure up to the stop against the front wall.

Where to look for spare parts

Original components can be purchased at the central spare parts warehouse, from leading suppliers, and at company branches.

The official partners of the manufacturer in Russia are:

  • Carmin LLC, on whose territory the central warehouse of spare original parts in the Russian Federation is located;
  • SAF – services and sells spare parts and SAF axle units;
  • BPW – provides support and spare parts, BPW axle units;
  • THERMO-KING – deals with refrigeration equipment;
  • WABCO - carries out maintenance, sells pneumatic systems, cranes, compressors, air dryers, sensors, electronic brake systems;
  • CARRIER – sells refrigeration equipment.

Availability of the product, as well as how much it costs, must be checked directly with the seller. The company's website has a catalog with up-to-date information and photos.

Optional equipment

In recent years, a lot of additional equipment has appeared on curtainsider trailers, allowing both to speed up logistics operations and improve driver convenience. This, for example, includes systems for installing pallets on two floors, which allows 66 pallets to be transported simultaneously. Such systems, used by different manufacturers, increase the utilization rate of the internal volume of the semi-trailer, simplify partial unloading and make it possible to transport light loads simultaneously with heavy ones installed on the semi-trailer floor.

The special prefabricated “false wall” offered by Krone can be installed anywhere on the semi-trailer and will support a load of 25 tons, providing support for the load during braking.

24 to 36 pallet racks, available as an option under the frame, allow carriers to deliver return pallets without taking up useful internal space.

And Schmitz Cargobull has developed a “kitchen” installed under a semi-trailer and locked with a key - a box that contains a water tank, a holder for a gas stove, as well as a compartment for storing dishes and food, which will be useful for the driver on a long trip.

Where can I buy

Operation of Schmitz semi-trailers.

New Schmitz Cargobull products can be purchased from an official dealer in the Russian Federation.

The factory price of the semi-trailer is from 20,000 euros. The cost in the CIS countries is much higher due to delivery and VAT paid by the carrier.

Previously used models are available on the secondary market. Price tags for Schmitz Cargobull equipment upon repeated resale are 15-20% higher than competitive models of the same year of manufacture and configuration (from 8 thousand euros).

Rear bumper

The rear bumper design includes a rear lamp bracket and an underrun protection device. In this case, the rear bumper can be either integrated or separate. An integrated bumper is cheaper, but when a car behind you drives into it, repair costs will be significantly higher.

The rear light bracket can be made from ordinary steel, stainless steel or plastic. It is clear that such brackets differ significantly in strength, durability, maintainability and price. What to give preference to is up to the carrier.

Owner reviews

Many users leave positive reviews about Schmitz semi-trailers. Equipment for transporting various types of cargo has proven to be extremely reliable and durable. Thanks to the quality and durability of operation, the device fully satisfies the requirements of customers.

The technical characteristics of the Schmitz semi-trailer allow us to generate solid added value for years; they correspond to the main criteria of strength, because they have a galvanized frame with bolt-rivets, safe and strong connections of metal parts.

Many argue that with proper care, structures operate smoothly in unstable climatic and atmospheric conditions under maximum loads, have easy movement, are easy to repair, and are worth the money spent on their purchase.

Schmitz Cargobull AG is a leading European manufacturer of semi-trailers for a wide range of purposes, having a comprehensive market strategy with the implementation of quality standards at all levels. Over the years, the company has developed and implemented technical innovations that competitors use.

Brakes

Modern semi-trailers are equipped with WABCO, Knorr-Bremse and Haldex brake systems, which are more or less equivalent in reliability. In this case, two types of brake mechanisms can be used - disc and drum.

Traditionally, drum brakes are more popular in our market primarily due to the longer service life of the brake pads, especially in poor road conditions (when dirt gets into the brake mechanisms). Disc brakes are more efficient. They are also easier and less expensive to maintain because accessing the shoes on drum brakes requires removing the drums, which incurs additional costs. In addition, it is believed that disc brakes work more effectively with the latest generation of stabilization systems and EBS than drum brakes, although in real operation this is almost unnoticeable. Krone, for example, offers a dual-circuit brake system with split drive on the right and left sides. And if one circuit fails, the second will continue to operate.

Malfunctions and repairs

Repair of refrigerated semi-trailers is carried out in service centers. The chassis of new trailers are in good condition and trailer repairs will not be needed for a long time. Parts such as brake discs, pads, and rubber fasteners are subject to natural wear and tear. Repair or replacement of such parts is carried out by specialists from service centers. If necessary, specialists perform diagnostics of the refrigeration unit, replace components and parts, refill with refrigerant, check and identify faults.

Rotos® Drive technology

1. The key to driving safety, reasonable operating costs and vehicle availability are the features of the ROTOS® axle unit: the latest driver assistance systems and MRH air suspension with automatic reset function are standard equipment, as are large, service-efficient disc brakes and maintenance-free hub units . Source

This is a refrigerated semi-trailer from a Russian manufacturer, which has proven itself to be a reliable and high-quality device for 25 years.

The main segment of the company is small business. This is due to the fact that entrepreneurs need a small semi-trailer with full key functions.

The body is made in the form of sandwich panels with an aluminum profile, polystyrene foam and moisture-resistant laminated plywood. Plastic and galvanized hardware are built directly into the structure. This allows you to maintain the temperature in the cabin in the range from minus 20 to plus 5 degrees.

A two-axle semi-trailer weighing 3.5 tons has a load capacity of 2 tons. Its advantages include:

  • increased cargo safety;
  • stability of products using slats, fittings and rings;
  • three-layer walls and roof;
  • galvanized subframe, which is part of the chassis;
  • a refrigerator operating both from a generator and from an external network.

The van's cover also includes extruded EPP insulation and galvanized steel sheets. The latter have a polymer coating and are glued on the outside to protect against corrosion.

This also includes bi-fold doors that open 270 degrees. The corners are protected by plastic, and the panels are connected into a single structure with a supporting profile. There are two dimensions in white at the front and red at the back.

It should be noted that driver category “B” is sufficient to drive a car.

Ramp Distance Control

Adaptive Brake Light: Emergency braking warning.
Brake lights with adjustable delay reduce the risk of accidents. The Adaptive Brake Alert system warns drivers behind you at speeds above 50 km/h by flashing the brake lights when your vehicle is decelerating by more than 4 m/s2 during heavy braking. A small guarantee: the sensors of the electronic ramp assist Ramp Distance Control monitor the rear of the trailer when maneuvering.

Prices and which one to choose

The price of a new Schmitz semi-trailer is RUB 4,320,000. Krone can be purchased for RUB 3,500,000. A used Samro unit costs RUB 1,349,000. You should choose a model based on the price-quality ratio. If a small enterprise and business are only at the beginning of their development, then you can choose an inexpensive model. With stable high incomes, when the result depends on the quality and volume of products, you need to choose a high-quality model that has a large load capacity and cross-country ability.
