Strengths of Sobol 4x4

The cabin size is suitable for comfortable travel and accommodation of four people in winter conditions. This is based on the experience of a four-person trip to Varandey. Traveling with two adults and, for example, two children is absolutely fire.

Simple design and maintainability. Someone, but Gazelle is known in every village, in every service center and spare parts store.

Connectable all-wheel drive (part-time). Some people don’t know that the permanent all-wheel drive that used to be on Soboli has not been produced for a long time. Now only Sobol is produced with a rigidly connected front axle.

Cross-country ability even in stock. Considering the geometry of the minibus, the Sobol 4x4 drives very well, especially on sand and in the steppes. It’s better to limit yourself to 170 hp firmware. and take into account the “cons” of the checkpoint, which are discussed below.

Weaknesses of Sobol 4x4

The Sobol's noise insulation leaves much to be desired, and with a diesel engine the cabin is even noisier. For those who want to improve comfort, it will be necessary to completely cover the interior with Shumka. However, you can disassemble the interior of the Sobol very quickly and easily.

Weak gearbox without 6th gear. Sixth gear is not enough like in the UAZ Patriot for economical driving on the highway, and in fifth you have to turn the engine. The insufficient strength of the gearbox affects the operation of a diesel engine, derated in order not to ruin the box with too much torque. If you “chip” the engine, you will have to be careful and not chase the bloopers from the traffic lights.

Weak front axle. But, let’s say, the axle is not weak, but if desired, the front-wheel drive can be damaged in one ride (as in other cars, however). For example, all my front axle components made it all the way to Beijing, including off-road and sand, and at the same time everything remained intact and unharmed.

Insufficient corrosion resistance. Here I need to clarify: everything is fine with the body, but rust appeared from inside the hood, on the inside seams of the front doors and at the joints of the rear door hinges. Otherwise, the body looks quite normal after being in Moscow for 4 years - it hasn’t rotted or rusted, and you can buy a new hood for pennies.

Myths about Sable 4x4

They say that Sobol's frame breaks - these are fairy tales. Once upon a time, indeed, the frame could have cracked in the area of ​​the front bracket, but this place was strengthened already in 2016, and I have not heard of it causing any inconvenience to anyone. Unless something might happen to some maniacs who have already turned Sables into off-road monsters and ride where wolves are afraid to sit down...

They say that Sobol has a terrible transfer case: it howls and breaks. There is enough noise in Sobol - yes, but I haven’t heard of any problems with the transfer case. Again, any car can be damaged, but mine is chipped to 190 hp. The engine still lives with the original transmission and original transfer case. Ugh*3 times.

They say that Sable is rotting. Here it is necessary to explain: over the four years of living in the Moscow region, the body of my Sobol remained in excellent condition. Corrosion appeared inside the hood, at the inside joints of the front doors, at the junction of the trunk door hinges and in places where the arches were cut when installing large wheels. The hood needed to be cut, but you could buy a new hood, painted, for pennies.

Unproven weaknesses of Sobol 4x4

I have repeatedly heard that the Cummins ISF2.8 has weak injectors, and that the engine is not ice at all. I don’t agree - the engine, in my opinion, is very good and would be installed in a UAZ.

As for the injectors, I refueled with diesel fuel in Kazakhstan, China, the Urals, the North, at regular gas stations in the central region and everything seemed to be OK. If you fill up with something you don’t understand, bought somewhere on the side of the road, then anything can happen, but then any other engine can bark.

Features of Sobol 4x4

I am often asked the question: “you have a UAZ Patriot and a Sobol 4x4, tell me which is better to choose?”

Sobol and UAZ cannot be compared in principle - one is an SUV, the other is a minibus with good off-road potential. These are completely different cars!

To understand this, go for a test drive of Sobol. If you, like me, are put off by this bus seating and the character of the car, then look further. I guarantee that half will be eliminated immediately at this stage - the Sobol feels like a bus, not an SUV, but this is its thrill - the space.

On long-distance trips, the Sobol 4x4 is very comfortable, except for the discomfort from noise - you won’t be able to listen to music quietly, but I didn’t do any noise insulation at all. I had the opportunity to drive 700-900 kilometers for several days in a row, including off-road, and after that my back, butt and legs were alive and well. And this is with “cheap” chairs, but there are “Lux” chairs that are even more comfortable.

As conclusions

If someone says that the Sobol 4x4 is garbage, don’t listen to him until you get to know the car in person.

You should not expect the comfort of a foreign-made passenger car from Sobol. This is a very unique car with its own character and charisma.

Technically, Sobol is not ideal and you need to know its weak points so as not to take unnecessary risks. Naturally, some components have a lower reliability margin than similar Toyota components, but this compensates for the ability to buy these components almost everywhere and inexpensively.

Otherwise, the Sobol is an awesome car with all the advantages of a large minivan with a high roof. He will never compete with either the UAZ Patriot or Bukhanka, because he performs in his own “league”.

Considering an off-road minivan? Sable is the best in this segment. If you have money, you can take an all-wheel drive Transit or Multivan, but it will not be an SUV, but just a minivan with all-wheel drive.

Another option is the H1 4x4, but the price tag is different, and the minivan is still closer to the Cartoons, and not to the Sobol. I repeat, Sobol is an SUV in the form of a minibus, simple and straightforward.

As a transmission, all varieties of Sobol Barguzin 4x4 are equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox, coupled to the power unit via a single-plate dry clutch. In the 4x4 modification, a single-lever transfer case has found its application. The first generation of minibuses came with independent front wishbone suspension and rear leaf spring suspension.
