History of creation

It is not known for certain whether this is true or a fairy tale for thrill-seekers, but those UAZ 452 designers who could give interviews a few years ago spoke about a completely different purpose for all-metal vans based on the GAZ 69. This is the simplest, most primitive stamped tin body, which was bolted to the frame from a gas car. But the most important thing in the design of this body was that in the cabin, in addition to the driver and front passenger, special mounts could be developed for five horizontal stretchers.

What kind of mass evacuation is this and why use an all-wheel drive chassis in this case? It was just the time. The spy mania had passed, the public needed a horror story so that it would not be too distracted by all sorts of nonsense, but would go to production when the buzzer sounded. And they came up with a horror story - nuclear war.

No one knew what a source of nuclear destruction might look like, but judging by the experience of Hiroshima, there was little chance of surviving in this hell. That’s why we developed this cheerful little minibus for transporting corpses from the source of the lesion. If its designer, V. Aryamov, had known about this, he would have come up with a more restrained design.

Types and design features of UAZ gas tanks

Gas tanks used in cars of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant can be divided into several types:

  • Right and left tanks of cars with a carburetor engine without a fuel transfer system;
  • Main (right) tanks of cars with a carburetor engine and a fuel transfer system;
  • Additional (left) tanks for cars with a carburetor engine and a fuel transfer system;
  • Main (right) tanks of injection models with a fuel transfer system;
  • Additional (left) tanks for injection models with a fuel transfer system.

Structurally, all these tanks are different, due to the functions assigned to them.

The tanks of carburetor UAZs without a fuel pumping system are most simply designed. Each tank is a container welded from stamped steel halves and end walls, with auxiliary components located on the upper and lower walls. To protect against corrosion, the inside of the tanks has a special polymer coating; the outside is usually painted black. One or more dampers are usually located inside the container. Each tank is equipped with a filler neck with a retractable elbow (for the convenience of filling fuel not with a gun, but from a canister or other container) and a threaded plug, fittings for connecting fuel lines, holes for installing fuel level sensors and drain plugs. The tank may also have brackets, mounting lugs, and other components.

Tanks with a fuel transfer system are somewhat more complicated. A so-called fuel module is installed in the main tank, which combines the main fuel pump (submersible type), a jet transfer pump and a pressure regulator. With the help of the main pump, fuel is supplied through the filter to the carburetor or ramp, and with the help of a jet pump, fuel is pumped from the additional tank to the main one. The jet pump operates on the principle of a spray: it consists of two tubes - external and internal; fuel from the return line enters the tank through the external tube, and the internal tube is connected to the fuel supply hose from the additional tank. When fuel flows out of the outer tube, a vacuum occurs in the inner tube, due to which fuel is “sucked in” from the additional tank - this is how gasoline gradually flows from one tank to another.

The all-wheel drive ambulance vehicle UAZ-3962 (39629) is designed for transporting patients and can be used to serve emergency medical centers and evacuate victims both in cities and in rural areas. The car body is divided by a partition into a driver's cabin and a sanitary room. The partition has a window with sliding glass. The sanitary room is equipped with folding seats and a mount for installing 4 stretchers, and the possibility of placing sanitary equipment is provided. The use of the UAZ-3962 in medicine is not all that it is capable of. The scope of use of the “nurse” is much wider. People's ingenuity has long ago turned it into a utility vehicle: thanks to the folding benches, it can accommodate up to 9 people or the corresponding equivalent of cargo. A general look at the fuel tanks of UAZ cars

UAZ vehicles are designed to operate in difficult conditions, off-road and far from gas stations, which, among other things, requires an increased fuel supply. This problem is solved by equipping the car with two large-volume fuel tanks and introducing some additional components into the fuel system. Today, UAZ vehicles use two types of fuel systems:

  • Carburetor fuel system with equal tanks without a fuel transfer system between tanks;
  • Fuel system with main and auxiliary tanks of different functionality and a fuel transfer system between them.

In the first case, both tanks are identical in design and functionality, and the fuel system has a simple structure: the tanks are connected to a three-way switch valve (it is used to select the tank from which fuel is taken), through which the fuel flows to the sediment filter, pump and filter fine cleaning into the carburetor.

In the second case, the right tank is the main one, and the left one is the auxiliary one. Fuel is supplied to the carburetor or ramp only from the main tank using a pump built into it. The tanks are connected by a fuel transfer system, which ensures a constant supply of gasoline from the auxiliary tank to the main one. In accordance with Euro-2 and higher standards, this system is equipped with components to absorb fuel vapors and prevent their release into the atmosphere (this task is solved using a separator, an adsorber and a system of vapor removal hoses).

In both cases, they perform several main functions:

  • Storage of fuel reserves necessary for long-term operation of the vehicle;
  • Preventing fuel leaks and spills;
  • Ensuring fire safety;
  • Gasoline supply to the filter and ramp (in tanks of UAZ injection modifications with a pump built into the tank).

All these problems are solved by various design solutions and features that should be considered in more detail.

An ambulance, for example, differed from a nine-seater passenger car only in the presence of a searchlight, those same ill-fated stretchers, although only one, a place for accompanying personnel. Sometimes the glass could be frosted. Well, the red cross on a white background indicated that this was a nurse. There were no technical changes. Except for the 451 model with single-wheel drive, that is, only rear-wheel drive.

The technical characteristics of UAZ vehicles changed synchronously as soon as the plant received another new engine. But in essence, the late 50s model 452A differs from the modern model 3962 only in small details, which is not even worth restyling. Among them:

  • vacuum brake booster;
  • more comfortable seats;
  • the car is more lavishly decorated with plastic;
  • Not long ago a 5-speed gearbox appeared.

Engine

It is not surprising that it is basically the same low-speed gasoline engine with a slightly modified timing drive system. In addition, most cars produced after 1985 have a three-liter engine with a capacity of almost one hundred horsepower. The reason for such approximateness is simply explained - the car can be equipped with engines from the Ulyanovsk UMZ plant, as well as from third-party manufacturers, and the owners of the “nurse” are in no hurry to overhaul the engine, preferring to install completely different engines. The power of the stock engine clearly does not correspond to the heavy body and purpose of the car.

Application area

Thanks to its convenient configuration, the car began to be used not only for medical purposes. Thanks to folding seats, the UAZ became a passenger transport. It can accommodate up to 9 people. To create a comfortable atmosphere, in April 1997, production of a car with soft upholstery and comfortable seats was launched.

“Loaf” has many “tuning” versions. This is due to the fact that the car is in great demand and has good performance and characteristics. The first group includes numerous variants of vans and buses with additional seats. Such cars are deprived of normal ventilation, heating and even entry and exit. Thanks to these modifications, the Soviet automobile industry developed and new minibuses appeared on the UAZ chassis.

Later, on the basis of the “loaf”, specialized transport appeared, for example, a drive-in cinema created by the Kuban plant, cars for filming at the Chernigov plant of special vehicles, as well as equipment for reclamation of the Pskov plant Gidroimpuls.

For those who want to buy a used car, I would like to note that this is a good option. Especially if the purpose of operation is driving in rural areas on bad roads. I often transport cargo with the help of UAZ. Of course, not directly heavy, but quite large. And I can say that the car does an excellent job. I can highlight several main advantages of the UAZ: – the car can drive anywhere. This helps a lot. Moreover, fuel consumption is quite low. - Considering the cost, and the fact that I inherited the car, so to speak, I can note that it’s not scary to bring it into any dirt. And she is not afraid of bad weather. The only negative, as for me, is the need for technical inspection and replacement of parts quite often. And I would also note that the car is unmaneuverable.

I remember the times when UAZ was a legendary car. It was used for various purposes and the car did not let us down. Even in cities, UAZs were used to pick up sick people, transport police officers, and so on. The scope of application was wide. But I want to share my experience of driving a UAZ. I needed transport for my dacha. The roads there are not of the best quality. A friend advised me to buy a UAZ and said that the car would go anywhere. And he didn’t deceive. In fact, the car can even drive almost through a swamp. In addition, I liked that the car does not need any tuning. More precisely, you can do it, but it is not necessary. What plays a role is that you don’t feel sorry for the car or something. In fact, for such a price I got a high-quality SUV, let’s call it UAZ. My wife calls our “loaf” a tank. But there are also disadvantages of the car that I don’t want to remain silent about. Firstly, this is not the safest transport. Convenient, but unsafe.

Secondly, the passage may be accompanied by strong shaking. That is, chicken eggs in most cases break after being transported in a car. Fortunately, I did not need the UAZ for this purpose. Therefore, in general, I am happy with the car.

Statistics

The ZMZ 409 car can be equipped with both an injector and a carburetor. It can reach speeds of up to 135 km per hour. Its power is provided by more than one power plant. Their characteristics:

  • ZMZ-402 2.5 liter with 72 horsepower.
  • ZMZ-409 with 2.7 liters and 112 horsepower.

The manufacturer indicates its fuel consumption standards for the UAZ Bukhanka 409 with an injection engine. A significant upward deviation in fuel consumption from the norm requires immediate contact with service station specialists.

The passport for the UAZ states that the fuel consumption of a UAZ minibus when driving around the city, on the highway and in mixed mode does not exceed 13 liters.

In fact, the average gasoline consumption on the highway is 13.2 liters, in the city - 15.5, and mixed - 14.4 liters. In winter, accordingly, these indicators increase.

Sanitary SUV

The “new” SUV (4x4) was the result of the development of the UAZ-452 A and, like its predecessor, was intended for medical service. In appearance, the cars were very similar: the newer model can only be distinguished by the missing internal guards on the windows. Another distinctive feature appeared a little later - the central side windows with rotary windows on the left side were replaced with monolithic ones.

In general, there is nothing particularly remarkable in the appearance of the UAZ-39629 - everything is simple and without frills. Apparently, no one thought about the beauty of the car when creating it.

The interior decoration of the cabin fully corresponds to the external data - laconic, practical, there is nothing superfluous, and everything is thought out to the smallest detail. The driver's cabin is separated from the sanitary room by a partition into which sliding glass is inserted. In the medical part of the cabin there are folding benches that can accommodate from 7 to 9 people or two stretchers can be installed on special mounts.

The engine in the UAZ-39629 is located under the casing in the cab to the right of the driver. This arrangement of the engine has certain advantages: in winter, the power unit becomes a source of additional heat to heat the interior, and in the event of a breakdown, it provides ease of repair, in almost any weather and regardless of the time of day.

The driver's seat does not differ in special amenities. The instrument panel also does not shine with a new design, but at the same time it contains all the sensors necessary for the driver.

In a word, if you remove the stickers from this car indicating that it belongs to the medical profession and repaint it in khaki color, then it will quite pass for a military vehicle, traditionally distinguished by its asceticism.

"Orphan" with all-wheel drive

The reason for the creation of an ambulance with all-wheel drive was the lack of roads between many small settlements of the USSR. Since 1989, to provide ambulance stations in such places, the ambulance UAZ-3962 began to be produced. The car in this version is still produced today, since it has no competitors capable of combining maintainability and high cross-country ability. However, the key factor when choosing a UAZ-3962 car is the price, which in the fall of 2022 is just under 510 thousand rubles. The list of additional options is not rich and consists of one item - a rotating headlight on the roof with a cost of 1 thousand rubles.

The basic equipment of the car includes anti-lock brakes, power steering and an additional heater for the passenger compartment. Inside the compartment there are guides for stretchers and two places for medical workers or accompanying persons. There are regular places for installing medical equipment along the wall and on the ceiling.
