Many car enthusiasts who are interested in fishing or hunting, as well as those who live in rural areas, often think about how to increase the cross-country ability of their car. Many people are interested in whether it is possible to turn an ordinary car into an all-terrain vehicle with their own hands.

UAZ brand cars are a very well-known domestically produced model, which was produced specifically for conditions requiring increased cross-country ability.

Patriot on low-pressure tires
This is the UAZ-452, the so-called loaf - one of the first models with increased cross-country ability. “Bukhanka” has been used for more than 50 years in difficult traffic conditions, especially in villages. These are also newer models “Hunter” and “Patriot”, released after 2000.

As you know, one of the factors that significantly increases the cross-country ability of a car is low-pressure tires.

Many car enthusiasts manage to make a UAZ with their own hands on low-pressure tires, turning it into an excellent all-terrain vehicle that is not afraid of either muddy roads or snow piles.

"Scorpion"

Since 1994, Zashchita Corporation has been producing a whole range of modified SUVs based on UAZ chassis. The range includes armored versions for military and cash-in-transit services, as well as civilian versions for hunters and fishermen.

On instructions from law enforcement agencies, the Scorpion-3 Swamp ATV was developed on huge low-pressure tires. He has simply phenomenal cross-country ability. In fact, this is a competitor to Niva-based swamp vehicles created by.

Powerful car

Modernization does not always involve changing the appearance of the vehicle. For example, in UAZ-452 they decided to carry out internal changes. The standard engine was replaced with a powerful 3.2-liter engine that runs on diesel fuel and is capable of delivering 150 horsepower. An automatic transmission, lug tires and locking axles were also installed. By the way, the roof was raised by 12 centimeters. If you look into the salon, you will also notice certain changes.

"Yamal"

In the town of Elektrostal near Moscow there is a fairly young enterprise, Yamalspetsmash, which has been producing two- and three-axle Yamal all-terrain vehicles using components and assemblies of UAZ vehicles for several years.

The lineup includes models H-4 with a body from Hunter, T42/44, and T62/64 with cabs from Patriot. The first number means the number of wheels, and the second number means the number of doors. All-terrain vehicles have enormous ground clearance thanks to the installation of 21-inch wheels, and some modifications can be equipped with hydraulic manipulators.

What will be useful at work

  1. Prepare corrugated aluminum sheets. They will come in handy when you do the sheathing.
  2. Buy m5 screws.
  3. Prepare rubber and metal pads.
  4. You will need synthetic mats.
  5. Buy triplex glass.
  6. Stock up on foam rubber.
  7. Prepare some soft plastic.
  8. Get a sealant.
  9. Be sure to prepare a driveshaft, for example, from a Volga or some other powerful car.
  10. Prepare screwdrivers, wrenches and other tools.

"Vector"

Another one located near Moscow is engaged in the production of all-terrain vehicles based on various UAZ models. The cost of one such SUV starts at 1.4 million rubles, and the design can vary greatly depending on the wishes of the customer.

As a basis, you can take not only the familiar Hunter, but also the legendary “Loaf”, which in the off-road SUV version acquires completely new qualities.

DIY all-terrain vehicle from UAZ

When planning to make an all-terrain vehicle based on a UAZ with your own hands, a person must clearly understand that he will have to solve the following problems:

  1. The best, high-performance all-terrain vehicles must have minimal weight, which improves their performance. The optimal weight of such transport is considered to be 1000 kg. The standard version of the UAZ weighs about one and a half tons, that is, it will take about 500 kg to remove from the car in order to achieve the goal.
  2. When driving through particularly difficult terrain, where there is a possibility of getting into deep snow or a wetland, it is important to ensure that individual elements of the vehicle do not create additional difficulties during movement. This point is especially relevant for the bottom of the car, where there are a lot of protruding mechanisms that can impede movement. Most often, homemade vehicles solve this problem by seriously increasing ground clearance. If the car owner plans to install tracks, then there should be no problems with ground clearance.
  3. Additionally, it is recommended to work on the interior of the car. Constant shaking and additional loads can lead to rapid failure of some elements, for example, the doors of an all-terrain vehicle. In addition, there is always the possibility of injury to a person during this type of movement. It is for these reasons that it is recommended to carefully consider the interior, install seals, foam inserts, and so on in the right places.
  4. Separately, you will have to work with the car's axles, which should be additionally fastened to the car frame using bolts and shock-absorbing systems.

Separately, you will have to work with the installed transmission and steering. Such a vehicle must have a minimum speed of 1 km/h - no more. This is especially true with constant use of transport in swamps. The desired result can only be achieved by installing the gearbox in no more than four stages. Naturally, power steering will be required, since it will be very problematic to turn the wheels or tracks only by applying physical force.

It turns out that creating such an all-terrain vehicle on your own is not so easy - you need time, money, serious experience in the automotive craft, and a clear understanding of the task at hand. If a car enthusiast is not ready for such tests, then, fortunately, there is always an alternative - you can simply purchase a ready-made UAZ-based all-terrain vehicle, which is offered by some companies. For example, the Uzola models are very popular, although they are only available in a tracked version.

Why are people so interested in homemade all-terrain vehicles based on UAZ? It is very difficult to drive both in rural areas and even on city highways. And if the condition of the roads can be called acceptable in the summer, then in winter driving along the “Russian obstacle course” becomes not only difficult, but also very dangerous.

For this reason, many Russians are thinking about purchasing their own all-terrain vehicle. Indeed, why bother trying to drive over potholes in a passenger car? It’s easier to do this on an all-terrain vehicle, which will also be a reason to brag to your friends.

But how to assemble it? The basis for such a car can be a simple UAZ. Homemade all-terrain vehicles based on this vehicle already exist and we have provided some photos below. Of course, the work ahead will not be easy. But you shouldn’t be afraid of her either. You just need to gather your thoughts and prepare the necessary working tools and materials.

UUUAZ

Craftsmen from Kurgan made a version of the UAZ SUV that has grown on all fronts, which was called “UUUAZ”. It is based on a frame from a GAZ-66 truck, on which a GAZ-53 engine and an overcooked body from a UAZ Hunter were installed.

But appearance is not the main thing in an SUV, because it is equipped with an excellent set of options, including a satellite alarm, TV, rear camera and even a night vision system. Apparently, the only copy was released in 2007.

Motors used

For homemade equipment, several types of power units are used.

Zied 4 5

Gasoline, 1-cylinder, 4-stroke engine, 4.5 hp, air-cooled. The power unit is installed on self-propelled agricultural machinery and various agricultural equipment. Starting is done using a cord wound around a pulley.

Several types of power plants are produced, each type is intended for different equipment.

When mounted on a mini-tractor, the Zid 4 5 engine must be attached to a rigid frame, resting with its “feet” on metal with a thickness of at least 7 mm.

When purchasing a unit, the manufacturer provides a warranty period for the engines - 2000 engine hours for a year, subject to proper storage and operation.

Lifan 6 5

The most common engine for mini-tractors is a 1-cylinder, 4-stroke Lifan gasoline engine with a power of 6.5 hp. It is used for walk-behind tractors, snow blowers, motor pumps, generators and other agricultural equipment.

The motor has a conical shaft output and a built-in reduction gearbox. Some models are equipped with an electric starter and an oil sensor, which stops the engine if there is a lack of oil.

Lifan 6 5 is made in China, but is distinguished by high-quality assembly. Upon purchase, the manufacturer provides a 2-year warranty.

Other options

Another engine option for a homemade mini-tractor is a gasoline, 2-cylinder power unit UD-25, with a volume of 0.42 liters and a power of 12 hp. The motor has been discontinued, but you can find many variants of this model on the Internet.

When making homemade equipment, engines from passenger cars are often used. The most common is from an Oka car, with a volume of 0.649 liters and a power of 29 hp. The unit is characterized by low fuel consumption and high efficiency.

Of the more expensive options, you can opt for a VAZ engine with a power of 59 hp or more.

A tractor with a Zhiguli engine can cope with any agricultural work.

SKB-600 / SKB-900

CJSC SKB "Gazstroymashina" from Tyumen builds two-axle SUVs SKB-600 and three-axle SKB-900 using components and assemblies of UAZ and GAZ vehicles. It is based on a UAZ frame, which rests on axles from the GAZ-66.

A two-axle vehicle can transport 600 kg of cargo on hard surfaces, and a three-axle vehicle can transport 900 kg. Tires - "Arctictrans" with dimensions 1300*700-21. Interestingly, instead of a UAZ body, a GAZelle Next body can be installed, even in the all-metal van version.

DIY tracked all-terrain vehicle based on UAZ: what to buy

Unlike a regular swamp vehicle, you will have to spend a little more here. The owner of a UAZ car will need to buy a set of two tracks. You can try placing blocks separately on each wheel, but this will cost more. Some experts argue that the presence of two tracks provides reliable traction, so the performance of the all-terrain vehicle will be better.

If you install separate blocks on each wheel, then you need to install a standard UAZ hub in the largest roller. For this reason, torque will be transmitted to the entire track mechanism. Here the advantage lies in turning the steering wheel and ease of control. The ground clearance of this all-terrain vehicle will be impressive. Some people make it a little easier by installing tracks on top of the wheels. On such tracks it is difficult to overcome obstacles in the form of fallen trees. The rest of the structure follows the same sequence as on a regular swamp vehicle.

When driving a tracked all-terrain vehicle, you need to remember the rules for moving on asphalt, because it has its own speed limits. After assembling the resulting vehicle, you need to check the operation of all mechanisms. If there are any problems, it is better to fix them immediately and on the spot.

"Trekol"-39294

The three-axle Trekol-39294 is considered one of the most popular swamp vehicles. The car is assembled at the facilities of NPF TREKOL LLC (Lyubertsy), having already produced more than 1,800 copies. Trackols can be used on public roads, which is a definite plus.

Huge wheels are the Trekol plant’s own development. Drive to all six wheels. The design uses UAZ axles, a ZMZ-409 engine or a diesel Hyundai D4BF, as well as a hodgepodge of parts from other manufacturers.
