On January 29, 1989, a ceremony took place in Leningrad to hand over the 1000th Volvo tractor to the Soviet Union. The anniversary one was the Volvo F1212 with chassis number 329898. The car was equipped with a 12-liter six-cylinder diesel engine producing 395 hp. with turbocharging and intercooler. A symbolic result of successful cooperation that began back in the 1970s...

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

New cabin for Sovtransavto

Entering the US market in the late 1950s gave Volvo management and designers a lot of food for thought. Trucks with unusually short cabs drove along American roads, in which the driver seemed to barely fit: the distance from the front bumper to the rear wall of the cab (there was such a parameter) was measured in tens of inches. So, for the GMC D-Series truck, introduced in 1959 and quickly earning the nickname “Cookie Tin” for its cab, this distance was some 48 inches (121.9 cm). As if it was specially invented for those who put transportation efficiency above the convenience of drivers: less space for the driver - more for cargo.

The “Tin” with its aluminum cab, plastic fenders, frame with variable-section side members and the first independent front suspension among “eighth class” trucks made a strong impression on engineering minds. Its influence is noticeable on both the two-axle Volvo L4951 Titan Tiptop and the three-axle L4956 Titan Tiptop. Although, of course, the creators of these machines went their own way. In particular, bringing the cabin into compliance with Swedish impact resistance requirements, the most stringent in the world.

These models were destined to become collector's items: they were produced for just over a year, from the summer of 1964 to the fall of 1965. Only 1429 copies were made. By that time, the production program was picked up by a wave of transformations - the well-known “System 8”. During this year, the frame and suspension of the car were strengthened, and the braking system was improved. Instead of the 240-horsepower TD96 C, a more torquey 260-horsepower TD100 turbodiesel with separate cylinder heads was installed, combined with an eight-speed gearbox with a splitter - a first in the Volvo program. Another feature is a fan driven through a viscous coupling, which automatically turns on and off at the command of a thermomechanical sensor. Such a fan took less than a kilowatt of power from the motor instead of the usual four. In addition, noise was reduced by almost two decibels.

The new designation for the family was F88.

In the summer of 1969, the FB88-32 (6x2) truck tractor as part of a road train with the Swedish Parator semi-trailer entered the NAMI research institute. The Swedes staged a display of their passenger cars and trucks at the Dmitrov Automotive Test Site and registered the Volvo trademark with the State Committee for Inventions and Discoveries under the USSR Council of Ministers. An updated version of the corporate logo was developed by graphic artist Carl Erich Forsberg in 1959, adapting the famous Volta font.

The Swedes' interest was not accidental. Foreign economic relations of the USSR expanded year by year. In 1968, a decree was issued by the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the development of transportation with capitalist countries. The Main Directorate of International and Intercity Road Transport “Glavmezhavtotrans” had no experience in this. We suffered losses due to the low power of tractors and the insufficient capacity of Minsk and Czechoslovak semi-trailers. The department did not transport the planned 50 thousand tons of cargo in 1969. Failure to fulfill the plan cost the head of the main department, generally competent specialist Nikolai Vasilyevich Semikin, his position. But where could he get modern technology if it was not produced in the country?

And for 1970, the management lowered the plan for currency. The first Swedish “Sovtransavto” tractors (this sonorous name was assigned to the management by order No. 5 of the Minister of Road Transport and Highways of the RSFSR E.G. Trubitsyn dated July 11, 1968) were not those orange and white Volvo F89-32 (6×2), remembered by the residents of our country, and the orange and blue two-axle Volvo F88-32. This is because in 1969, the subsidiary of the Axel Johnson concern, the transport company Linjebuss, approached the Soviet trade mission in Sweden with a proposal to open a freight service between Gothenburg and Moscow. Our country has a long-standing relationship with the famous Yunson family enterprise. In 1918, the Soviet Republic entered into its first business contract with him. It is not clear why trade representative Yuri Leonidovich Brezhnev, the son of the secretary general, demanded the involvement of another local carrier, AB Svenska Godscentraler (ASG). Blue and orange are his colors. So together they became the first partners of Sovtransavto, and the logo in the form of the letter “S” first appeared on the sides of Swedish road trains.

Our roads were already familiar to Scandinavian trucks. They were driven to the USSR by Finnish carriers. In July 1966, exhibits from a British trade and industrial exhibition were brought to Moscow's Sokolniki Park in a caravan of 26 trailers, including a Volvo F88. Planning the trip (520 tons of cargo!) took almost a year.

We had to rent Western equipment from Sovtransavto for a simple reason - there was not enough currency to purchase it. In 1971, the next head of the main board, Yuri Sergeevich Sukhin, proposed introducing a long-term plan for foreign exchange earnings. Over five years it was planned to increase them from 10 to 200 million foreign currency rubles. And to account for this, buy cars. Minister Evgeny Georgievich Trubitsyn (hereditary railway worker) approved the idea, Vnesheconombank agreed to issue loans against such security for a period of three years. Usually Sovtransavto extinguished them in one and a half to two.

The choice fell on the more powerful F89-32 tractor with a 330-horsepower 12-liter TD120 turbodiesel and a 16-speed gearbox, which debuted in November 1970. The first batch of vehicles had a 6x4 wheel arrangement and a reinforced chassis, like timber trucks. In 1973, drivers of the Sovtransavto-Leningrad enterprise drove 27 such tractors from Gothenburg under their own power. The remaining 73 arrived in Moscow. All of them had to work with French 24-ton Trailor semi-trailers.

At the end of 1975, the first Volvo F89-32 (6x2) with a suspended third axle arrived in the USSR. This time, 150 cars at once (except for Leningrad and Moscow) for the newly created Sovtransavto motor depots in Bryansk, Minvody and Rostov. Equipment was usually purchased in large quantities of 50–100 pieces, for which the company provided the Soviet side with a good discount and even gave Volvo cars to the authorities. Sovtransavto expected to achieve payback on tractors in three to four years, but in reality they began to make a profit twice as fast.

The drivers liked the cars. The F89's cabin had a comfortable adjustable seat, two wide berths, good sound insulation, a powerful heater and even a refrigerator. Later, 33 air-conditioned cars arrived in the fleet - they were ordered by Iran, but due to the 1979 revolution, the batch was stuck at the plant. The Swedes offered very favorable leasing conditions, and these cars began to operate on southern routes.

Volvo had the opportunity to test its technology in a new market. Suddenly, the 400-liter fuel tanks began to leak; their design was hastily changed. The wheels of the third suspended axle in the raised position touched the unevenness of our roads. Other problems also arose. Sovtransavto sent cars to the plant for overhaul and even offered to take a car from the first batch, which had covered over 1.5 million kilometers, to the museum. The Swedes politely replied that such a mileage is not something outstanding for their tractors.

Cargoautoinfo. Freight transport in detail.

Sometimes it seems that some modern trucks are no longer cars at all, but computers with wheels. And just recently there were no electronics in trucks at all. Many drivers remember those times with nostalgia. The Volvo FH12 of the first releases is a typical representative of that pre-electronic era. We met a truck driver who drives such a car. His story about the operating experience is in front of you.

Volvo FH 12.420 1998 Mileage - 1,360,000 km. This driver's mileage is 20,000 km.

My Volvo FH12 was released in 1998. An old but very reliable truck. I’ve only recently been working on it, but I’ve come to love this car. The car's mileage according to the speedometer is 1,360,000 km, but no one knows what it really is. But the engine is original, and the mechanics say that they haven’t “tampered with it” yet. Now, attention, the question is - which “Chinese” or domestic truck will travel that much without a “capital”?

And the model itself is successful, it’s a pleasure to work on it. It was released at the crossroads of eras: there are no electronics yet, but there is already a lot of comfort. What do you like? Good engine thrust. It's old, but it looks like it has 420 hp. everything is in place. It pulls excellently, even loaded, uphill - a super motor. Fuel consumption is standard, 32-35 liters with load. Moreover, the gear ratios in the gearbox are very well chosen: it is six-speed, with “halves”. But that's enough. Plus the high-torque engine, so you drive as if on an automatic machine. I switch very rarely.

Classic interior, no frills

I like the level of comfort. The cabin is very quiet at any speed and on any road. Excellent sound insulation. And a very “soft” move. There are springs in the front and pillows in the rear. And the brakes are great. That's why it's nice to work on an old Volvo. The only annoying thing is that the gear lever is too close to the seat. It’s also very good that the car is tall: the bumper is mounted high, so it’s comfortable in winter. You don’t have to be afraid of the ruts, and you can go beyond the Urals with confidence. My FH12 doesn’t look very good: it’s broken here, touched up there. But overall, the car is in good condition. There are no special problems. And most importantly: this is a very predictable car. The old “Germans” and “Swedes” have this property: you always know when something will break. The part will first “warn”, then refuse. Therefore, despite the age of the car, I go on a flight with confidence: it’s a reliable, good car.

Of course, there are breakdowns. Where would we be without them? But spare parts are also cheap - a clutch kit with a basket, disc and releaser cost 550 euros. Stabilizer bushings cost $20, the same as for a passenger car. Longitudinal steering rod - $130.

It is not expensive. And the design of the car is simple: it can be repaired either in Berlin or beyond the Urals.

The cabin is quite spacious. And warm in winter

I like the gearbox: only 6 steps with “halves”, but you rarely need to shift

The Volvo FH12 has high ground clearance, so you can safely “walk” beyond the Urals

I spoke with my colleagues: everyone really praises this particular model. There is even an opinion that all subsequent ones have become worse and less reliable. Therefore, if the carrier does not have a lot of funds, I would recommend the FH12. You can buy something newer, but the car is unlikely to be better. Our company has owned this car since 2006 and has driven about 600 thousand km. During this time, not a single major breakdown. Just this year the turbine was repaired: at the service center they said it was very simple, and they repaired it inexpensively. The fuel equipment has been repaired only once in five years: both the pump and the injectors “run” normally on our diesel fuel. The set of injectors cost 1000 euros. Expensive. But they were changed once every five years.

My opinion - the best car of the 1990s. So, whatever you want, I don’t want to get on an “electronic” truck just yet.

"Club of Four"

The F88–F89 family turned out to be extremely successful. In 1974, it accounted for 86% of Volvo truck production (21.6 thousand units). The company again entered the European club of heavy truck manufacturers. It also returned to the American market, which was facilitated by the energy crisis of 1973 and soaring fuel prices.

In this family there were also modifications G88 and G98 with a cabin noticeably shifted behind the front axle. They appeared in response to legislators’ maneuvers with the maximum permissible axle load and length of trucks. The standards changed every now and then, starting from the entry into force on March 21, 1956 of the notorious “Seebohm Laws”, the Minister of Transport of the Federal Republic of Germany. The load on the front axle actually decreased, but drivers did not like the G88 and G98 because of the harsher ride - not only the front overhang was shorter, but also the springs. However, these cars were bought in Australia and Great Britain.

At the same time, until 1973, the N88 bonnet model was produced, on which a cabin from the L395–L495 family was installed. It was replaced by the second post-war generation of “hood” N7, N10, N12 - the first tangible success of Lars Malmros at the post of Volvo Trucks, formed in 1969. The first-born of the N family stood out with fiberglass hoods with integrated fenders. However, they soon returned to metal plumage. Many people succumbed to the fashion for synthetic materials in those years, for example, the creators of the ZIL-169.

Cabs remained the most vulnerable point in truck design. Relatively small production volumes (5–10 thousand units per year) did not pay for full-fledged serial equipment for their production.

It is not surprising that until 1976, Volvo continued to install cabs on trucks of the “junior” series, which were in their second decade. Replacement was expensive. And then they decided to join forces with competitors. On November 1, 1971, the Société Européenne de Travaux et de Développement (ETD) design bureau was established in Paris. His task is to develop a single cabin for four customers at once: the Dutch DAF, the West German Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (Magirus-Deutz brand, later a division of IVECO), the French SAVIEM (later RVI, the Renault brand) and Volvo. At first there were five participants in the idea, but the MAN concern soon left the project.

If this had not happened, the Schwäbische Zeitung reporter would have had no reason to dub the project the “Club of Four.” It was from this newspaper, issue of December 3, 1974, that the world first learned about the existence of Viererclub.

The cabin was designed for a model with a gross weight of 6–13 tons, which will not prevent club members from expanding the range of its use in the future; Thus, Volvo, following the F4 and F6 families, in 1978 installed a cab on the heavy F7 series (gross weight up to 32 tons). In 1979, the Volvo F7 was deservedly chosen as the European Truck of the Year.

The “Sevens” were equipped with a 6.7-liter 6-cylinder TD70 turbodiesel with an intercooler for charge air. The intercooler reduced the temperature of the turbocharged air by a good 100 °C, which is why power increased by more than 10% - from 204 to 227 hp.

Continuing to consistently improve its model range, in the late 1970s Volvo became the first in the world to equip all trucks without exception with turbodiesels. The smallest 4-liter TD40 was created to meet the promising California noise and toxicity standards of 1983. Therefore, direct injection was replaced with a less noisy pre-chamber injection. This engine was named City-Diesel.

With an eye toward urban use, the F7 family now has a modification with an Allison MT650 5-speed hydromechanical transmission - a rare case when Volvo trucks are equipped with automatic transmissions. In general, the F7 family was striking in its diversity: it even included models with 8x4 and 8x2 wheel arrangements. They were produced by the Volvo Truck & Bus Ltd plant in Erwin, Scotland. Oil giant Shell has ordered 6x2 truck tractors with two front steered axles from the company's Modified Vehicle Assembly (MVA) assembly area.

Note that, in addition to Saviem, the cabins were stamped, welded and painted at the Magirus-Deutz plant in Ulm (Germany). It should be noted that in addition to them, “club” cabs were used on Berliet and Mack trucks; these brands were included in the RVI concern. They were also purchased by MAN-Meccanica (Italy), Terberg (Netherlands) and Rhein-Bayern Agrobil (Germany). Cabins for Volvo were further strengthened to withstand the “Swedish pendulum” test - frontal and rear impacts from a “woman” weighing one ton, suspended on a chain three meters long.

Perhaps the most unusual model that tried on the “club” cabin was the CH230 model. This index reflects its features: CH is the international code of Switzerland (from the Latin name of the country - Confoederatio Helvetica), and 230 cm is the permissible width of vehicles on the roads of this country. It was not possible to persuade the Confederates to accept the European width of 2.5 m; they referred to the peculiarities of the profile of mountain roads. “Broad” Europeans were allowed to travel no further than 10 km from the border – and that was the end of it.

The first generation of the “Swiss” Volvo F89 CH230 was produced from 1977 to 1979. The cabin, frame, power unit and transmission are from F89, but the axles are narrower: the front is from F86, the rear is from N10. The second generation with a “club” cabin was a similar “designer”.

Again, taking into account the specifics of operation in the mountains, Switzerland placed increased demands on the power output (10 hp/t), as well as on the efficiency of the braking system: in addition to the engine brake, a transmission retarder had to be installed. The vast majority of CH230 had an 8x4 wheel arrangement - four-axle vehicles in Switzerland were allowed to have a total weight of up to 27.6 tons.

in 1985, when sales volumes (42,000 cars in 1984) made it profitable to develop their own cabins. Volvo has limited itself to four types of modular cabs for the entire line of trucks with a gross weight from 7 to 38 tons.

"Steam Locomotives", "Caps" and "Wanderers"

If a driver doesn't get enough sleep, he becomes a potentially dangerous road user - this simple truth can be included in the subtitle of the story about the new generation of Volvo heavy trucks, which debuted in 1977.

According to the system introduced by Volvo, the cars were given the designations F10 and F12, where the numbers indicated the engine displacement. They indicated more or less accurately, since in fact the F10 “six” had a working volume of 9.6 liters. This is the same turbodiesel as the F88. Interestingly, the company made a slight reduction in power in favor of torque. The F12 had a 12-liter TD120, familiar from the F89. There were few fundamental differences in the chassis between generations - except that small-leaf parabolic springs disappeared from the list of additional equipment and appeared in basic modifications. Even in the cockpit, the driver recognized the familiar steering wheel and found the gearbox divider lever on the front panel, and not on the lever where it was moved later.

But the steering wheel, it turns out, was now adjustable in height and angle of inclination! It was the cabin that was the main trump card of the new product - so wide that factory testers complained that on the freeway they were afraid of hitting cars in the next row. The area of the windshield increased by a third, it became so large that it was necessary to install a third “windshield wiper” to clean it. There was a built-in air conditioner, many convenient cavities for storing things, a radio, and spacious sleeping areas. Engineers have made a lot of effort to reduce vibration, infrasound and noise penetration into the cabin. The interior noise level at 80 km/h was 72-73 dB - 5 less than the F89.

“When I first tested the F10 at the Hallered Proving Ground, the only noise in the cabin was the ticking of the clock!” marveled a correspondent for the venerable British magazine The Commercial Motor, playing on the famous Rolls-Royce motto: “At 60 mph, the loudest sound in the cabin is - clock ticking!

The cabin, of course, became noticeably heavier, but now it was mounted on a four-point spring suspension.

Another interesting feature is that the MR62 mechanical shaft transmission, designed for the most powerful power units, could be supplemented with a torque converter. From now on, drivers were asked to forget about the burnt clutch, and the start of movement of loaded vehicles on inclines and maneuvering were made easier. The converter was automatically blocked when the engine reached speeds above 1800–1900 rpm. However, already in the early 1980s, this idea was abandoned in favor of 14-speed manual transmissions with an extended power range. Well, the first full-fledged automatic transmission was introduced by Volvo Trucks in 1986. Designated PT1660, it will first be installed on the A35 articulated construction dump truck. And only then will regular trucks be equipped under the Powertronic brand.

The F10 and F12 families underwent two updates, in 1983 and 1987. In 1984 they were chosen as the European Truck of the Year. And in 1987, the F16 series was added to them with a 465-horsepower TD162F turbodiesel with a displacement of 16.12 liters. A special feature of the engine was the absence of gaskets between the individual cylinder heads and the block.

The first F1225 (6x2) arrived at the Sovavto-Leningrad enterprise in 1982 - 20 vehicles with Kögel flatbed bodies and the same number of Kögel refrigerated vans, both with trailers. 22-meter couplers were used in Scandinavian countries, where road trains of this length were allowed. Drivers quickly dubbed them “steam locomotives.” Two years later, St. Petersburg residents purchased another forty truck tractors, already modified F12 Turbos, nicknamed “caps” for their cockpit fairing. As in any professional community, the “sofics” – Sovtransavto drivers – have developed their own jargon. For some reason, they called the F89s from the first batches “oak” - wasn’t it because these were vehicles with a “timber” specification?

In the 1980s, the Black Sea Shipping Company purchased a batch of Volvo F10s with cabins without beds for the motor depot of the port of Ilyichevsk, and Volvo F12 for the motor depot of the Odessa seaport. The Danube Shipping Company ordered several Volvo F12s for the Izmail port. These machines were also purchased by other departments and organizations of the USSR.

The main event for the company at this time was the introduction in 1979 of the Globetrotter cabin (translated as “World Wanderer”, “Wanderer”). By this time, there was a tendency to improve the work comfort of drivers. The Americans, of course, set the tone in this. Some European brands have begun to install plastic add-ons with a berth on their cabs. This half-hearted solution did not suit Volvo, primarily due to considerations of passive safety.

“We started by building a simplified mock-up of the driver’s workplace and taking it to exhibitions. They invited drivers to sit in it, and they themselves wrote down their impressions and wishes,” recalled Volvo Trucks ergonomics engineer Bengt Lundgren, who created the Globetrotter cab. 1,525 truck drivers from five countries took part in the experiment. They advised where and what to place, which parts to move away, which, on the contrary, to move closer, what to narrow or expand. As a result, the layout acquired a look that met the wishes of 95% of drivers. The ceiling height in the cabin was 1980 mm - there you could stand up to your full height.

The success exceeded all expectations. Although the cab was not cheap, and the company initially expected to sell no more than 400 units a year, almost 40 years later, large Globetrotter letters adorn the lamps of 85% of Volvo cabs.

The start of production of the F series dates back to 1977, the Volvo F10 and F12 trucks were technically ahead of their time and could boast of a number of innovations that Volvo Trucks engineers used in their design; special attention was paid to interior ergonomics and driver safety.

In 1987, production of the Volvo F16 model was launched; the truck was equipped with a more powerful engine and became the flagship of the F series. During the production of the series, more than 200,000 trucks rolled off the assembly line, and in 1993 the F series was replaced by the famous FH series.

The Volvo F Series mod turned out to be rich in everything and of the highest quality. The tuning capabilities are impressive, the developers added 6 types of cabs, 4 types of chassis, two original engines with original sounds D12G385 and D16G465 for the F16, respectively, two 12-speed gearboxes.

There is a large set of spare parts and accessories for modernization, replacement radiator grilles, bumpers, skirts, fuel tanks, interior lighting, etc. The Volvo F's interior is high quality and is available in two versions.

Volvo Trucks India branch opened. A joint venture with Deutz AG (Germany) to create a new family of diesel engines. The investment amounted to SEK 1 billion (DM 221 million).

The whole world with one brand

In the early 1980s, Volvo became the fourth largest truck manufacturer in Europe (over 30,000 vehicles per year), with 28 factories in Sweden alone! Of course, the company's interests extended much beyond the borders of the Old World. Few people know that one of the first Volvo truck assembly plants appeared in 1959 in... Morocco.

In those years, no one asked the question: Are European short cabs needed in America? In the same States, for example, where they still do not limit the maximum length of road trains? Or in Brazil, where interest in Volvo grew year after year? On October 24, 1977, a branch of Volvo do Brasil Motores e Veículos SA was founded in the town of Curitiba, and the Brazilian branch of Volvo Penta was founded in Rio de Janeiro.

The plant in Curitiba started operating two years later, it started with buses - a hard bargaining chip in any market. For example, the decision to establish a plant in Erwin, a suburb of Glasgow, was determined by the interest of local authorities in double-decker buses on Volvo chassis. Let them use Leyland chassis there, in arrogant London... And in Scotland, let them have their own views on urban transport. Then the former colony of the British crown, Ireland, stepped up with the order. Robert Burns's compatriots willingly helped resolve the “Irish Question.” The story ended with Volvo purchasing the Leyland Bus factory from the British Rover Group in 1988, and the circle was closed.

In most similar cases in Argentina, South Africa, and other countries, after buses, assembly and then production of trucks began. Australia can be considered an exception. The plant in Wacol, a suburb of Brisbane (Queensland), has specialized in trucks since its launch in June 1972. Some things came here ready-made from Sweden, some were already assembled here. Local components were increasingly used - Hendrickson suspensions, Rockwell axles, Dayton wheels. A purely Australian initiative was the appearance of 8x4 modifications in the production program.

The company approached the North American market slowly. The failures of the late 1950s were also memorable. And in 1974, there was another misfire: a passenger car plant was built in Chesapeake (Virginia), but production never began; Even repurposing it for buses did not help. While flirting with the heavy truck manufacturer Freightliner in the late 1970s did not lead to anything, on May 5, 1980, this company suddenly signed a contract with Daimler-Benz AG.

The US truck market has been going through challenging times. Thus, by the end of 1980, sales of “eighth class” heavy trucks (gross weight 14,969 kg and above) fell by a third. And when a recovery was already in sight, Volvo acquired the assets of White Motor Corp. (USA) with the exception of its two Canadian factories and the Western Star brand. At this moment, the White company was under external management, i.e. it was bankrupt. Its market share fell to 4%. For registration in the USA, I had to pay 75 million crowns (about $15 million) and spend about the same amount “on home repairs” - improving quality, improving design and developing the White dealer network. We made it on time: in October 1982, the Big Bang happened - the Swedish government devalued the krona by 16%.

In 1985, Volvo-BM and the American company Clark Michigan Co. established the construction machinery company VME Group NV with headquarters in the Netherlands and branches in Sweden, the USA, Canada, Brazil and Germany. The association produced equipment under the brands VME, Clark, Michigan, Euclid, Bobcat (in fact, VME means Volvo-Michigan-Euclid).

In 1990, the front loader plant Zettelmeyer Baumaschinen GmbH (Germany) was added to the association, in 1991 - the excavator plant AB Åkermans Gjuteri & Mekaniska Verkstad (Sweden), in 1993 - the Japanese multidisciplinary Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. From this rich soup, Volvo Construction Equipment emerged in 1995. Subsequently, other companies, such as the British JCB and the American Terex, also joined VCE. The current geography of VCE factories is Brazil, Great Britain, Germany, India, Spain, Canada, China, Norway, Poland, USA, France, Sweden, South Korea, Japan.

Inspired by their success, in 1988 the Swedes created a joint venture, Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp. A new brand, White-GMC, emerges. The radiators of the product, which had a little bit of everything from the Autocar, Chevrolet, GMC and White brands, are now decorated with Volvo's chrome flourish. In 1997, Volvo purchased all of General Motors' shares in the joint venture and renamed it Volvo Trucks North America. In 2001, Volvo Trucks NA took a special position within the Volvo AB group.

In addition to the financial benefits, the establishment of branches around the world made it easier to meet local operational requirements, which were sometimes very different from Swedish ones. Although in this case, common sense was put at the forefront. Thus, the medium-duty FL family for the American market continued to be made in Belgium and was only renamed FE, since the FL abbreviation in the USA remained with the Freightliner brand.

The moment came when the company outgrew the scale of small Sweden. The consequences of that “growing pains”, no, no, but they will remind you of themselves. We are talking about an alliance with Renault. At that time, everyone was carried away by alliances. Some even predicted that by the year 2000 there would be no more than five to seven major car manufacturers left in the world. It seemed that fate was pushing Renault and Volvo into each other’s arms: they already had experience working together on passenger engines.

The alliance, as paradoxical as it sounds, gave the first impetus to the separation of Volvo's passenger and truck divisions, which today are connected only by the outlines of trademarks and a common museum. When the Volvo and Renault holding was created in September 1993, during the exchange of shares, the shares of the French partner were distributed in a cunning way between the parent company Volvo AB and its passenger and truck divisions. As soon as the structure cracked, not only the holding fell apart, but also its participants from the inside. A grandiose economic drama was brewing, about which books would be written. Today, many see the reason for the failure as the fact that there were only two automakers on the alliance's board. No! Volvo shareholders, former managers, and engineers opposed the deal. On February 17, 1994, the partners were forced to announce that they could not live in a common house. Following this, as feared, the strong Swedish Volvo family began to collapse.

After the divorce from Renault, everyone was waiting to see where the compensation would go. Shareholders voted in favor of acquiring Scania, but the European Commission saw in these plans the threat of a monopolist emerging in Scandinavia and on October 25, 1999, vetoed the deal. Volvo CEO Leif Johansson reacted in the spirit of “no need to panic!” and along the way... sold the Volvo passenger car division to Ford Motor Co. However, the European Commission had more arguments - on March 14, 2000, it finally buried the deal with Scania. And a month later, on April 25, the press was informed about the upcoming acquisition of the Renault VI cargo company with its American subsidiary Mack Trucks, Inc.

Business on the threshold of the millennium was done in broad strokes. The Russian page is also included in this story. On March 20, 2003, Volvo Trucks was the first foreign manufacturer to open a truck assembly plant. The site was found in Zelenograd. But it turned out to be a bit cramped. For this reason, in 2007, at the XII Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, an investment agreement was signed between the leadership of the Kaluga region and Volvo on the construction of a new plant in the Kaluga-South industrial zone on an area of 55 hectares. Investments in the project exceeded 100 million euros. On January 19, 2009, a solemn launch ceremony took place. The plant is designed to produce 15,000 trucks per year. So the Swedes’ successes have a little of our merit.
