It is not easy to understand the range of fire trucks created at the Moscow Carburetor Plant and the I. A. Likhachev Plant without insider information. Even taking into account the short history of the production of fire fighting equipment at these enterprises. In addition, since 2008, the ZIL workshops have housed ZAO PO Special Fire Extinguishing Equipment. We will try to present a more or less complete picture of the production of fire trucks in different years.

The first models of fire-fighting equipment were assembled at MKZ in May 1993, and mass production and development of new vehicles began at ZIL in June 1998. To the main products of the plant, special equipment was added, the production of which was not previously planned - mainly firefighting tankers. The economic situation in the country has changed, and new conditions have forced enterprises to engage in new activities.

Technical characteristics of gasoline engines of the ZIL-4331 dump truck

Quite often you can find the truck in question equipped with a gasoline engine. There are two modifications of gasoline engines for ZIL-4331:

The ZIL-508.10 power plant began to be produced much later than the 645th engine.

The new gasoline unit had more flexible operating characteristics. First of all, this was expressed by large angular rolls, which the installation was able to tolerate without consequences.

The performance parameters of the ZIL-508.10 were also more impressive:

  • engine type – V-shaped, overhead valve. The cylinders are located at an angle of 90 degrees to each other;
  • total number of cylinders – 8, number of valves – 16;
  • total working volume of the combustion chamber – 6 l;
  • maximum power at 3,200 rpm – 150 hp. With.;
  • the total weight of the engine with all additional equipment is 640 kg.

To date, production of this model has been discontinued.
The ZIL-508.300 engine is the lowest-power engine of all those installed on a truck of this type. It has the following performance characteristics:

  • working volume of the combustion chamber – 6 l;
  • maximum possible power at 3,200 rpm – 135 hp. With.;
  • maximum torque at 2,000 rpm – 377 N×m;
  • total number of cylinders – 8 pcs.;
  • The cylinders are arranged in a V-shape at an angle of 90 degrees relative to each other.

Fuel consumption when operating a car with gasoline engines is approximately 30-36 liters per 100 km at a speed of 90-95 km/h and may vary depending on the load.

If there is no cargo:

  • at a speed of 60 km/h – 18 l;
  • at a speed of 80 km/h – 23 liters.

If the ZIL-4331 moves as part of a road train, then the fuel consumption is slightly different:

  • at a speed of 60 km/h – 25 l;
  • at a speed of 80 km/h – 32 liters.

ZIL-4331 can be equipped with engines of other modifications, but they are much less common.

Dimensional and weight characteristics of ZIL-4331

The car is relatively compact, its dimensions today allow it to be used in city conditions - most road structures will not become an obstacle in the way of this truck:

  • total length from front to rear bumper – 6,370 mm;
  • body width from the axis of the left rear-view mirror to the right - 2,500 mm;
  • height from the tread to the side lights on the roof – 2,655 mm.

The wheelbase is also quite short for a car of this size:

  • the distance between the front wheels is 1,930 mm;
  • between the rear ones – 1,850 mm.

The ground clearance can please even the most demanding drivers and those who carry out transportation on extremely poor roads: its value is as much as 330 mm. The average track width is 1,930 mm.

The weight of the car itself is 4,820 kg (excluding refueling fluids). The maximum load that the ZIL-4331 can carry is 6,000 kg.

Thus, this truck cannot seriously compete with foreign analogues due to its rather high fuel consumption and low load capacity. But the ease of repair and low cost make the car in question extremely popular.

The total weight of the ZIL with a full load and filling fluids is approximately 11,700 kg. This weight can easily withstand most of the various bridges and other similar engineering communications on the roads.

Gas and smoke protection vehicle

Along with the fire tanker, ZIL produced a special gas and smoke protection vehicle - AGDZ. The dimensions of the body have not changed, and the internal space was enough to accommodate equipment - portable electric smoke exhausters, reels with power cables, canopies for sealing, breathing apparatus, portable spotlights, etc. To drive the fans, instead of a fire pump, an electric generator with a control panel was installed. Support posts and other equipment were placed on the roof in a special box. On the rear wall of the body there is a lighting mast with a pneumatic drive.

An attempt to modernize the AC-3.2-40 led to experiments with the pump and a change in the body design (it became lower, equipped with curtain aluminum compartment doors from VILS, and stationary steps along the side). We changed the types of pumps on the car several times and settled on NTsPK-40/100-4/400V1T. But the car did not reach mass production.

Refill tanks ZIL-4331

The number of refueling tanks is quite large, since the car itself has not at all small overall dimensions:

  • fuel tank volume – 165 l;
  • cooling system capacity – 26.5 l;
  • engine lubrication system capacity – 18 l;
  • the hydraulic booster requires at least 3 liters of oil for normal operation;
  • for the manual transmission lubrication system - 10.5 l;
  • crankcase capacity of the main transmission gearbox – 10.5 l;
  • filling volume of shock absorbers – 0.47 l (each);
  • hydraulic clutch engagement – ​​0.5 l.

Weight parameters of individual components and mechanisms of the car

Each ZIL-4331 system has a fairly impressive weight:

  • fully equipped wheel (disc, tube, tire) – 93 kg;
  • platform (without expansion supports and other mechanisms) – 860 kg;
  • radiator weight (without coolant) – 20 kg;
  • additional spring made of sheet steel - 27 kg;
  • spring of the rear part of the platform - 75 kg;
  • spring of the front part of the platform - 60 kg;
  • cardan shaft – 59 kg;
  • drive axle (without wheels) – 290 kg;
  • rear axle (without wheels installed on it) – 520 kg;
  • power plant weight – 720 kg;
  • weight of the power plant with all additional equipment – ​​960 kg;
  • Gearbox – 200 kg;
  • the weight of the driver's cabin including seats and other contents is 550 kg;
  • frame structure (including buffer) – 540 kg.
  • Brake system, suspension and chassis

    The wheels on the truck are of the disc type; the rim has overall dimensions of 7.0-20. They are secured using 8 studs, onto which special fixing nuts are screwed.

    At the ZIL-4331 factory it was equipped with 9.00R20 tires, as well as models numbered I-N142B-1.

    It is acceptable to use imported cylinders (12-EX). The pressure in all wheels has the same value - 6 kgf/cm2.

    The shock absorption system is a fairly simple design.

    The drive axle suspension consists of a set of semi-elliptical springs. Their end parts are sliding. A pair of shock absorbers also works in conjunction with the springs.

    The suspension in the rear includes a pair of springs, and special additional mechanisms are also located there. The design is designed for the following loads:

    • front axle – 3,735 kg;
    • rear axle – 8,005 kg.

    The truck can also be included in a road train - its total weight should not exceed 23,000 kg.

    The maximum possible slope that a dump truck can overcome with a fully loaded body is 25%.

    As part of a road train (23,500 kg), this value decreases to 18%.

    The brake system has a design that is quite typical for cars of this class. Its main components:

    • brake drums (radius – 210 mm, width of front brake linings – 100 mm, rear – 140 mm);
    • cam type pad release
    • pneumatic brake circuits

    An interesting feature is that the additional brake circuit is combined with the parking circuit. The latter acts on the rear axle using mechanical energy accumulators.

    The pressure in the pneumatic system can fluctuate within a fairly wide range - 6-8 kgf/cm2.

    Braking at a speed of 65 km/h with a fully loaded trailer is 36 m. Despite the early years of development, the brake system contains a special fuse (alcohol type) that prevents condensate freezing.

    Cabin and onboard platform

    The ZIL model 4331 cab is equipped with excellent heat and sound insulation, which allows you to talk inside the truck without raising your voice, and also not experience inconvenience due to cold weather.
    There are three seats, one of them is the driver's seat. All seats are equipped with seat belts. itself is located on two pairs of shock absorbers. The design is solid, it is a single block - if necessary, it can be folded forward very easily.

    The sides of the metal platform are folding, with the front one having a greater height and the side ones slightly less. If necessary, you can install an awning on the frame.

    ZIL-4331 ceased production in 2004, but the Likhachevsky Automobile Plant plans to restart production of these small trucks in 2014.

    ZIL had three branches in Moscow: MKZ (Moscow Carburetor Plant), MAAZ (Mironovsky Automobile Unit Plant), MZAA (Moscow Automobile Unit Plant). This is what led to the fact that this model is quite widely represented in the fleets of even modern enterprises. With the arrival of K.V. Laptev, who banned the 133 family, the machine was completely at a crossroads, production was out of the question, and the equipment was sent to scrap.
