BelAZ 75131 is a 4 by 2 mining dump truck designed for transporting heavy loads. Serial production of the model began in 1996, and it itself became the founder of a new family with an electromechanical transmission.

The first super-heavy vehicles of the Belarusian plant were MAZ 525 and MAZ 530, capable of carrying up to 25 and 40 tons of cargo, respectively. BelAZ mining dump trucks appeared in 1961; the load capacity of the initial version of the BelAZ 540 was 27 tons. In the early 1980s, relying on vast experience in the production of this type of equipment, the Belarusian Automobile Plant launched several advanced projects to develop heavy-duty dump trucks. BelAZ 75131 was among the first models in this series and received worldwide recognition. The car could carry cargo weighing up to 130 tons.

The main purpose of the model was the transportation of rocks in loose form along the roads of quarries and open-pit mining. By order, BelAZ 75131 could be equipped with certain types of body for transporting rocks of different densities. The car found its main application in technological shops, the processing industry, factories, and was also used in the construction of production facilities. BelAZ 75131 was adapted for operation in unfavorable and difficult climatic conditions.

The load between the axles of the car (when fully loaded) was distributed in a ratio of 1:2. The rear part accounted for most of the mass (this is where the twin wheels were installed). The car was allowed to be operated exclusively on paved roads; the maximum slope should not exceed 8%.

The car was equipped with platforms of various types with volumes from 40 to 103.8 cubic meters. The loading height was 4800 mm. The mass of the falling rock should not exceed 2500 kg, the height of the fall – 2500 mm. The maximum speed reached 50 km/h, in areas with a slope - 25 km/h.

Modifications

The automobile plant produces several modifications of cars based on the 7540 model, differing in power and model of power unit:

  1. An early BelAZ-75405 vehicle, which was supplied to customers in the 90s. The release has been discontinued.

  1. Version 7540A, equipped with a YaMZ-240PM2 diesel engine and a 5-speed transmission. The equipment is designed to transport cargo weighing 30 tons. The permissible weight of the machine is 52.6 tons.
  1. Option 7540B, characterized by the installation of a YaMZ-240M21 diesel engine and a 3-speed gearbox. The engine develops power up to 361 hp, the weight and speed characteristics of the dump truck have not changed. A similar car with an enlarged body is designated 7540E.
  2. Model 7540C, equipped with a 425-horsepower D 280 diesel engine and a 5-speed hydromechanical transmission.

  1. The 7540D dump truck is equipped with a German Deutz BF8M1015 diesel engine with a power of 395 hp. Vehicles can be equipped with a folding body with an increased volume, but the load capacity remains the same.

  1. Model 7540K is equipped with a Cummins QSM11-C engine with a turbocharger developing 406 hp. The vehicle features a modified cabin and an expanded list of additional equipment. Available only with standard size body, rated for 15.1 m³ of cargo.

All vehicle variants are adapted for operation at ambient temperatures from -50°C to +50°C. Power plants provide mobility on mountain roads; movement along technological dirt routes is allowed.

7540A

The vehicle is equipped with a 12-cylinder V-shaped diesel engine YaMZ-240PM2, developing a power of 420 hp. at 2100 rpm. Exhaust gases are removed through the double bottom and sides of the cargo platform. This reduces the risk of soil freezing in winter. The platform angle control is hydraulic, raising and lowering takes 16 and 20 seconds respectively.

7540V

Modification 7540B is a budget version of the dump truck. Cost reduction was achieved by using a less powerful diesel engine and a 3-speed gearbox. The design of the cooling system provides space for the installation of an autonomous heater, which ensures engine starting at low temperatures.

Engine

The BelAZ 75131 is equipped with a 16-cylinder Cummins KTA50-S unit. A powerful V-shaped diesel engine with gas turbine supercharging, direct fuel injection and intermediate air cooling provides the conditions necessary for operating a huge dump truck. To start the engine, a pneumatic starter developed by specialists of the Belarusian Automobile Plant is used. The Cummins KTA50-S diesel engine is equipped with electronic control and a switchable cooling system impeller to ensure better fuel efficiency and stable speed.

Air purification is carried out by 3-stage dry filters, gases are released through the body. The engine uses a single-circuit liquid cooling system with a forced circulation mechanism. Stable engine starting in cold weather is achieved through a pre-heater. Thanks to this, the use of BelAZ 75131 is permitted in the regions of Siberia, the Far North and the Far East. Heaters are not installed on tropical models.

The basis of the BelAZ 75131 design is a welded frame made of low-alloy steel. In areas of greatest load, lithowelded elements are used. The car body has a welded bucket structure and is equipped with an exhaust gas heating mechanism and a protective visor. There is also a mechanical locking system, stone ejectors and stone chippers. BelAZ 75131 is a rear-wheel drive dump truck with 2 traction electric motors acting on the drive wheels. The motor and the wheel are actually represented by one design (it is no coincidence that they are called an electric motor-wheel). The rear suspension is dependent with trailing arms with a central hinge. The front suspension is also dependent with steering knuckles mounted on the front beam by means of kingpins. There are shock absorber cylinders in the rear and front suspension, but at the front they are not interchangeable and differ in size.

In combination with the dependent mechanism of the guide vane, the BelAZ 75131 suspension ensures a smooth ride and stability on the road. The kinematic diagram used in the design allows the force to be directed to the wheel hubs immediately from the first and second rows of the gearbox, which reduces the load and increases the service life.

The car uses a continuously variable electromechanical transmission, which includes an AC electric drive, supplemented by a traction generator, a microprocessor control system, electric motor and wheel gearboxes (two-stage with spur gears), control elements and monitoring devices. The design of the transmission eliminates elements and components subject to mechanical wear.

The hydraulic system of the BelAZ 75131 combines the hydraulic systems for steering, tipping mechanism and brakes. Due to this, it was possible to unify the hydraulic drive and reduce the number of components. The use of adjustable pumps equipped with automatic unloaders eliminates the need for cooling radiators. The efficiency of the hydraulic system is impressive: lowering the platform takes 18 seconds, raising it in 20 seconds.

Hydraulically driven disc brakes are installed on all wheels of the vehicle. The system contains 2 separate circuits and a system for auto-adjusting the gap size. In addition to traditional brakes, there is an auxiliary electrodynamic brake, where braking is performed by an electric motor-wheel system.

BelAZ 75131 is made in a classic form factor for similar vehicles, which includes a massive head part, a high-slung cabin shifted to the left side, and a voluminous body.

The BelAZ 75131 cab is equipped with a safety cage and meets the ROPS standard, which allows the dump truck to be used not only in Russia, but also in foreign countries.
