Shacman brand trucks are not yet as well known in the European part of Russia as, say, Howo or Dong Feng. Shacman is produced by one of the divisions of the Shaanxi Automobile Group corporation, and for the production of this brand of trucks, some components and assemblies are used, manufactured under licensing agreements. This is where the modest knowledge about these machines ends. It’s all the more interesting to get acquainted with the 4-axle dump truck from the Middle Kingdom Shacman SX3315DR326 8x4.
The test dump truck looks quite attractive. Why? We all know the answer to this question. The licensed cabin of the MAN F2000, although old by European standards, looks quite natural on a Chinese truck. Moreover, the use of a cab, which was discontinued in Europe in the early 2000s, can be considered a serious step forward for the Chinese truck industry. Indeed, despite all the conventionality and dubiousness of Chinese “licenses”, in this case we are dealing with a real product of German designers and constructors. The Shacman cabin is indeed manufactured using licensed stamps from MAN Nutzfahrzeuge, and the only thing the Chinese can “improve” is to use a different metal and change the cabin painting technology. Therefore, you can’t count on a long life without rust, but you can be quite confident in the thoughtful design, attention to detail and a high level of comfort for the driver and passenger.
Chinese manufacturers didn’t bother with the rest of the front end parts of the Shacman SX3315DR326, making the truck as similar as possible to its European ancestor. Like the cabin itself, the angular plastic bumper with block headlights and additional foglights is completely copied from a MAN truck. Except that the Chinese-made headlights are slightly different from the original. Other differences include a different shape of the air intake and a slightly modified appearance of the radiator grille.
But if you look not only at the cabin, but at the entire dump truck as a whole, the resemblance to the “European” is not so noticeable. First of all, the huge body with a volume of almost 19 cubic meters catches your eye. m. And this despite the fact that the official load capacity of the Shakman SX3315DR326 is only 17 tons. But the unofficial one is almost twice as much and amounts to 32 tons. Needless to say, the Europeans would never allow such a monstrous overload, which is why the MAN bodies are an order of magnitude less than Chinese.

The interior of the “Chinese” is also “sewn” according to German patterns, so the truck’s cabin is quite spacious. This feeling is also facilitated by the low engine tunnel, which allows you to move unhindered around the cabin. And this despite the fact that our test was a truck with a low “dump” cab and one berth. The taller F2000 double cabs are even more spacious, but are more commonly found on tractor-trailers and flatbed trucks.
The build quality of the interior parts does not reach European levels

You can get comfortable behind the wheel of the Shacman thanks to the air-suspended seat and the steering column, which is adjustable over a wide range. The high seating position and really large glass area allow for excellent control of the situation around the truck. Three rear-view mirrors, as well as additional curb and sliding mirrors, also play an important role here. The instrument cluster is extremely simple even for a European truck of the last century, but the readings are perfectly readable both day and night. Nothing distracts the driver from driving. Everything is extremely simple and concise. Perhaps even too simple.
But in terms of the quality of finishing materials and assembly accuracy, the Chinese truck is still far from being equal to the “European”. The plastic panels are made of harder and more “creaky” plastic; the gaps between the finishing parts are often uneven, which noticeably spoils the feeling of a clear German design.
The cabin's shortcomings include the narrower sleeping bag at the head and at the feet. If in the central part its width is at least 800 mm, then behind the passenger and driver’s seats it is almost twice as narrow, and this is no good. But there’s nothing you can do about it; you have to pay for space in the cabin. In this case, we had to sacrifice a full-fledged place to relax. Under the sleeping bunk there are voluminous tool boxes. Their only drawback is the lack of access from outside the car.

But there were no complaints about the sound insulation of the Shacman SX3315DR326. Whether this is the merit of German designers, or the competent use of insulating materials on the Chinese side is not important. The main thing is that when driving a truck, the driver is not bothered by extraneous aerodynamic noise. By the way, we must take into account that the gearbox lever is located directly on the engine and is protected from the cab only by a rubber seal. If the bottom of the cabin was solid, and gear shifts were carried out using rods or a cable drive, the noise insulation could be even better.
License again
A distinctive feature of most dump trucks from the Middle Kingdom is a disproportionately large body combined with a not very powerful power unit. Shacman SX3315DR326 8x4 was no exception. The in-line 6-cylinder engine Weichai WP 10.336N, manufactured under Steyr license, complies with the Euro-3 environmental standard and develops a maximum power of 247 (336) kW (hp) at 1900 rpm. The maximum torque indicator is also not impressive - 1500 Nm. Such meager figures can be compensated at least a little by the fact that the peak torque remains in a fairly large speed range - from 1200 to 1500 rpm. This means that even a dump truck loaded to its full weight will cope with any climb in the quarry, but you can’t count on high-speed performance when driving along the highway.

Unfortunately, we were not able to drive a loaded four-axle Shacman, but from my own experience of driving a “Chinese” with a 6x4 wheel arrangement and a similar engine, I can say that the engine of the dump truck, even with three axles, sometimes worked to the limit of its capabilities. And this, let me remind you, is the experience of driving a three-axle truck. In the case of the Shacman 8x4, the engine will be much more difficult, so even if you buy such a car, you should take a closer look at possible overloads. Moreover, the body allows you to carry a huge amount of ASG, both in cubic meters and in tons.
Don't forget about the load on a manual gearbox. The test truck is equipped with a Shaanxi Fast Gear 12JS160TA synchronized 2-range 12-speed gearbox. This “mechanics” is installed on a huge number of different Chinese trucks and is already quite familiar to domestic mechanics. It can serve faithfully for a long time if used carefully during the break-in period, as well as in gentle conditions for further use. After break-in, the gears are engaged quite clearly, without crunching or characteristic biting.
