Wood splitter for a tractor - drawings, DIY production, video

Wood splitters are relevant for farms that require frequent firewood collection. One way to solve the problem is to install a firewood harvesting mechanism on the tractor to use the power of its engine. There are industrial wood splitters for tractors and those made with your own hands.

Advantages of a log splitter for a tractor:

  • Mobility and simplicity of design.
  • High performance.
  • Easy to repair.
  • Using the PTO (power take-off shaft) of the unit.
  • Low manufacturing costs on your own.

The disadvantages of assembling a wood splitter with your own hands include the following:

  • you need a drawing that assumes the presence of engineering thought;
  • welding work;
  • regular oil changes;
  • the need to constantly sharpen the blades of the cleaver.

The safety of a homemade design can only be guaranteed by the manufacturer, who does not always take into account all the details.

Wood splitter for a tractor: how to make it yourself, step-by-step instructions

A wood splitter is a specialized device that is used for splitting wood and logs, as well as for trimming. Easy to use, functional and practical, this model can be used in any conditions.

The wood splitter is compact, easily transported from place to place and has a long working life. It is created from wear-resistant parts and can be equipped with electric, diesel and gasoline engines.

Wood splitters are divided by area of application

  • Industrial. The models have a high working life and work for a long time, without interruption.
  • Household. They have limited productivity, but due to their versatility and mobility they can be used even in private households.

You can see how wood splitters work in the video.

Today there is a large selection of this technology. Many modern manufacturers produce splitting axes of different types, power and cost. But some craftsmen create homemade products that are no worse than more expensive devices.

Do-it-yourself wood splitter for a tractor

At home, a person can assemble any type of wood splitter. It can be a horizontal or vertical splitter, mechanical, motorized or electric. But in order for the homemade product to work correctly, like a homemade UAZ tractor, it is advisable to use diagrams and drawings.

Hydraulic wood splitter

It is quite difficult to make such a model, but it is quite possible. The most difficult part is the hydraulic component, which includes a hydraulic cylinder with a pusher, a pump, a fluid flow control unit, an oil tank and an engine pump.

When creating a hydraulic wood splitter, you need to follow certain steps.

  1. Frame design. It uses durable materials that must be resistant to mechanical stress.
  2. Installing the frame on the wheels. It is better to use a ready-made chassis, which will make the device more stable.
  3. A car jack should be installed at the bottom.
  4. The upper part needs to be made detachable, so you can chop firewood on the frame.
  5. A wedge, a center screw and a hydraulic jack are attached to the top.

You can create more complex models in which the jack is mounted on a stationary frame.

Homemade wood splitter for a screw-type tractor

For such a model you need to use a splitting cone, a shaft, a frame, a reduction gear and a powerful motor. You can use a PTO drive, which will make the splitter more productive.

The principle of designing a homemade wood splitter

  1. The motor and gearbox are attached to a stable frame
  2. A cone is placed on the shaft
  3. Next, the shaft should be connected to a reduction gearbox.

A screw wood splitter should be designed taking into account certain points:

  • the nozzle is not attached to the motor directly;
  • the electrical part should be installed by a specialist;
  • The belt and chain drives are covered in a casing.

This cleaver has a minimum rotation speed of 250-300 rpm. This is enough to effectively chop wood.

You can also create a tractor-mounted wood splitter, but for this a special hitch is used. It will allow you to install the model on the unit and automate the process of working with wood.

Rear linkage for tractor MTZ (D-240)

In order to perform various works in conjunction with agricultural machines and implements, working equipment is required to use the power of the tractor. The following working equipment is installed in MTZ-80 and MTZ-82:

  • hydraulic mounted system (HNS)
  • PTO
  • towing devices
  • drive pulley

The HNS is necessary for connecting mounted, semi-mounted, trailed machines and implements and controlling them from the driver’s workplace and is a mounted device and a hydraulic system. Machines (implements) are raised and lowered using hydraulics. The tractor is connected to agricultural machines using a hitch. As standard, the hydraulics include a hydraulic unit housing with an oil tank, a pump, a distributor, main (power) and remote hydraulic cylinders, a hydraulic adhesion weight increaser (GWI), and oil lines. Units for automatic control of tillage depth are included in the additional package.

To connect hydraulic machines, MTZ-80 is provided with a pair of independent hydraulic system outputs. The hydraulic system of MTZ tractors, which are equipped with a hydrostatic control unit, contains a common oil tank - it is also the body of the hydraulic units. Moreover, the oil in the system is selected separately from the tank.

In a tractor with a gearbox that switches without interruption in the power flow, or on a synchronous gearbox, a hydraulic power take-off system (HPS) can be installed to drive the active parts of hydraulic attachments and implements. The oil tank is a reservoir that supplies hydraulic units and steering units with oil. It is called the hydraulic unit housing, since the main units of the hydraulic system are also attached to it. While passing through a special filter, the oil is cleaned of mechanical impurities, cleared of air bubbles and then cooled. The driven oil pump is located in the lower part of the hydraulic unit housing.

The oil enters the tank from the distributor through a drain filter in which it is cleaned of impurities. If the filter becomes dirty and its resistance is 0.245-0.343 MPa, the safety valve automatically opens and the oil is partially drained into the tank, past the filter. The filter element includes an outer brass mesh with small cells and an inner steel mesh with large cells. NSh-32 is necessary to create working pressure in the system. At MTZ-80.82 they install pumps with right rotation. The pump is started using the intermediate gear of the rear PTO drive. The pump is connected to the body of the hydraulic units using a centering cup and 4 studs. The shank of the splined drive gear of the pump mates with the internal the splines of the sleeve-shaft, on the outer splines of which there is a movable gear for turning on the pump.

If there is no need to use the hydraulic attachment system, the pump is turned off. The gear is turned on or off by turning the handle, which is mounted on the shaft, where the gear control fork is also installed. The fork pins fit into the ring groove of the gear. The pump is turned on when the engine speed is low. With the rotation of the gears, portions of oil located between the circumference of the housing bore and the contour of the tooth cavity are shifted towards the discharge cavity.

The oil that enters the cavities creates high pressure. Oil backflow is prevented by meshed teeth, leaving only one path for the oil to choose from, directly into the discharge line. However, some of the oil can seep through the gaps between the meshing teeth of the gears, the housing and the outer diameter of the gears, and on their end surfaces. In order to reduce such losses, the bores of the housing, the side surfaces of the teeth, the outer diameter and the ends of the gears are very precisely machined. With an engine speed of 2200 rpm, the pump volumetric flow is 45 l/min.

Wood splitter for a tractor: types and how to make it yourself

A tractor-mounted wood splitter is a design that has found wide application in farms where large quantities of wood are regularly harvested. The presence of attachments of this type allows you to split the largest wooden logs, saving a lot of time and effort for the farmer.

Wood splitters designed to work in tandem with tractors are divided among themselves according to several criteria. The first of these is the method of placing logs into the structure during splitting.

Based on this factor, attachments are divided into 3 types:

  • horizontal - in such wood splitters, logs are placed on a niche provided in the design, after which they move to the splitting element or, in the case of some models of units, the splitting element moves towards the wood;
  • vertical - in devices of this type, the piercing element splits the log, moving towards it from above. To work with such wood splitters, wooden logs must be fixed. In this case, the latch may be provided by the design of the wood splitter, or the log will need to be held by hand;
  • mixed - the operating principle of these wood splitters is selected depending on the type of wood. The main advantage of such equipment for a tractor is its high productivity, which allows the use of units of this type in large woodworking enterprises.

As a rule, horizontal structures are less efficient than their vertical and mixed counterparts. This explains the low demand for them and the possibility of using them only for harvesting small amounts of wood.

Depending on the principle of operation, wood splitters for tractors are divided into the following types:

  • hydraulic - have a simple design and high performance parameters. Each hydraulic wood splitter has a great advantage - a smooth collision of the splitting element with the log;
  • screw or cone - these devices are equipped with nut-screw connections, the advantages of which include reliability and high power. The screw wood splitter for a tractor has a long service life and does not require special maintenance.

This kind of classification of wood splitters for tractors allows you to select equipment that is suitable for different volumes of wood and operating conditions.

Installation of hydraulic device

Assembly of the mechanism is difficult. To create a wood splitter you will need a special cylinder, an oil tank and a fluid flow control unit. First, the frame is made; for greater convenience, it can be mounted on wheels or a special chassis. This will allow you to move the device from one point to another, making it mobile.

The main hydraulic part will be attached to the frame. You can make a pad made of noise-absorbing material under the base. It will help to slightly reduce the noise level in the process and remove excess friction between the frame and the hydraulic unit. A screw is installed in the center, which will move towards the log.

The presence of an electric motor in the device allows you to speed up the process and significantly simplify the step-by-step implementation. Such a device will work much faster than a mechanism with a conventional jack. When finishing wood, less manual force will be involved than when using a mechanism with a motor.

If we talk about the differences between the factory model and the unit made by hand, then there will not be much difference between them. The only exception is price indicators. Models from the factory cost several times higher than those made independently, but the former will also have higher power. Everyone chooses convenient options for themselves, but if it is possible to create a design on their own, this will help significantly save the family budget.

Nowadays, along with alternative energy sources, fuels such as coal, oil or firewood are used. Many heating devices for private homes use wood - fireplaces, stoves, boilers, etc. Until the mid-19th century, wood was chopped manually, which required a lot of time and energy. Mechanical wood splitters have greatly facilitated human labor. The first models were powered by steam, were very bulky, and were difficult to make at home. Today, if you need to make a wood splitter with your own hands: drawings, photos, instructions can be easily found on the Internet.

A factory-made wood splitter will cost more than one assembled by yourself

Pros and cons of a hydraulic log splitter for a tractor

A hydraulically driven wood splitter has a number of advantages.

These include:

  • attachments of this type have a simple design, which greatly facilitates its independent repair;
  • a hydraulic wood splitter can be installed and used on different tractors, including having at your disposal a homemade UAZ tractor;
  • the design has high productivity and can be used for splitting the hardest types of wood.

Installation diagrams for aggregated equipment

When aggregating tractor machines with mounted devices, three-point and two-point linkage options are used.

Depending on the traction group of the tractor, the following schemes for connecting working devices with the tractor hitch are used:

Mounting optionTraction level of tractor equipment
Three-point linkage0.6, 0.4, 0.9 and 4
Three-point linkages with the ability to convert to two-point3, 4, 5, 6, 8

When using a two-point hitch, the front ends of the lower links are connected at one point and the aggregated equipment rests on the tractor at two points. With this type of connection, the kinematics of the mounted attachment completely coincides with the trajectory of the towed device.

A two-point hinged connection is used to aggregate plows, the operation of which is accompanied by a curvilinear movement of working elements located deep in the ground.

Providing greater stability of the aggregated equipment in the horizontal plane, the three-point connection scheme is used for aggregating wide-cut agricultural machinery, earth-moving, snow-removing and brushing devices, etc.

Design and principle of hydraulic log splitter

The hydraulic wood splitter consists of the following elements:

  • durable metal frame;
  • stop;
  • cylinder;
  • pump;
  • wedge blade:
  • tank for filling oil;
  • engine that drives the unit.

Both horizontal and vertical or mixed wood splitters for tractors have a similar design. The only difference between them is that in the vertical design the heel is replaced by a cutting element.

Standard wood splitters for tractors quite often fail due to the small diameter of the cylinder provided in their design. Often a pressure of up to 10 tons is created on a cylinder with a diameter of approximately 10 cm. Despite this, the engine of the wood splitter continues to function, even despite the absence of any effect from the work. Unlike standard units, hydraulic wood splitters are designed in such a way that during their operation there is a gradual increase in force. If there is a lack of force, the rotation of the cylinder stops, which will prevent damage to the unit even if the oil pump continues to operate.

DIY hydraulic cleaver

Various mechanical devices are known for splitting firewood. A hydraulic wood splitter, which works on the principle of applying pressure to a log using a press, is one of them.

The liquid under the press and due to the build-up of pressure begins to compress, is supplied to the work table and puts pressure on the incoming wood. That's the whole principle of operation of a hydrosplitting machine.

Now let's look at what types there are and how to make a wood splitter.

Types of hydraulic log splitter

The type of wood splitter depends on the number of operations performed, it can be:

  • household , the functions of which include only splitting wood;
  • professional , capable of splitting not only firewood, but also feeding, trimming, and unloading it.

The household appliance is equipped with a simple electric motor that provides rotational action of the hydraulic pump. The drive is easy to maintain, yet it is reliable and environmentally friendly.

The only drawback is that it only works from the mains, is completely dependent on it, and the device’s power is also insufficient.

More powerful log splitters are considered more mobile, designed for use by professional loggers, and are capable of splitting wood faster and on a larger scale. The engine uses gasoline or diesel fuel to operate.

The hydraulic system for starting the wood splitter is supplied from the tractor, possibly from its power take-off shaft. Also, to operate the mechanisms, an electric motor with a tractor drive or a gasoline engine can be used, which begins to rotate when connected to the tractor’s hydraulics.

Cleavers also differ in the way they lay firewood. There are 3 types:

  • Horizontal. This is the most common type. In this case, the log is placed horizontally on the rails. The movement is often carried out by the log towards the knife. But there are also models when the knife moves towards you.
  • Vertical. The smallest design. In it, the knife often moves from above onto a log, which is mounted vertically below. But there are models when the knife is installed stationary, and the tree is in motion.
  • Mixed. The rarest species. Mostly professional models have this type of bookmark. Their main advantage is the processing of large quantities of firewood. Therefore, they are installed mainly at woodworking enterprises.

Main technical characteristics

Whatever the device is called: a wood splitter or a hydraulic wood splitter, its essence is the same.

The main element that determines power and performance is the engine. In everyday life, many people have enough force of the device equal to 3–5 tons.

More powerful wood splitters are already purchased for industrial purposes; they are capable of working with longer and thicker logs.

The average stroke is limited to 52 cm.

Those cleavers that are powered by an electric motor can be connected to a 220 or 280V network.

What does a wood splitter consist of?

A do-it-yourself hydraulic wood splitter includes the following parts:

  • bed;
  • emphasis;
  • cylinder;
  • wedge blade;
  • pump;
  • pressure distributor for fluid supply and return;
  • oil filling tank;
  • an electric motor driving the pump.

Diagram of a hydraulic wood splitter

The hydraulic wood splitter circuit is the same for both the vertical and horizontal versions. Only in the vertical version, instead of the heel, a cutting device is installed. And there can be any improvements to it, whatever your imagination allows.

Drawing of a hydraulic log splitter

How the device works

Conventional wood splitters often break down, because even with a small cylinder diameter of 9–10 cm, a voltage of up to 10 tons is created in it, while the electric motor continues to work and rotate the device, even if the log does not want to split. In a hydraulic log splitter, there is a smooth, gradual increase in force; if there is a lack of force, the cylinder will simply stop rotating, and even with further rotation of the oil pump, no breakdown will occur.

Do-it-yourself wood splitter for a tractor - how to make a reliable unit?

A homemade wood splitter for a tractor has the simplest possible design. It consists of a vertical frame placed on a separate platform, as well as an ordinary car jack located below. The upper part of the frame should have a split design, which will allow you to split logs of different diameters.

Before assembling the wood splitter on the tractor, you will need to study detailed drawings of its design. They must indicate the dimensions of all parts used and the algorithm for their installation in the unit.

After studying the diagram, you can begin to directly manufacture the structure.

The algorithm of actions should look like this:

  1. First, you need to carefully think through and assemble the equipment frame. It is best to immediately install the structural elements on the chassis or wheels, so that in the future it will be easier to move the equipment around the site;
  2. Next, you need to install the main hydraulic part on the frame;
  3. Instead of the knife provided in the design, you will need to use a cone-shaped wedge;
  4. The wedge will move from the wall to the log being split under the influence of the central screw - it is best to purchase it separately. The video will clearly tell you how to make a hydraulic log splitter for a tractor.

After assembling the wood splitter, you will need to install it on the tractor. The most optimal option is considered to be the connection method from the PTO provided in the design of the agricultural machine. This method will allow you to maintain stable revolutions of the power take-off shaft and transfer them to the cone of the wood splitter, eliminating its overload.

Varieties

  • Solid cultivator. It is also called pre-sowing or steam. The treated pairs are sown with seeds next year. Loosening with a cultivator is characterized by high speed due to adjustable depth processing.
  • A row-crop cultivator is needed for treating crops from weeds and for hilling. The working elements are designed in such a way that they only fall between the rows of plants without damaging them. To protect plantings, there are additional attachments. A similar inter-row cultivator for a mini-tractor can be conveniently adjusted to the needs of the gardener.

There are also other developments by manufacturers.

On soils with different characteristics, a spring cultivator can be used. The product is suitable for areas that are slightly rocky and prone to water erosion. The cultivator is effective for cultivating the land after harvesting. Spring struts are complemented by a reinforced frame, which not only increases labor productivity, but also saves fuel and lubricants. Tilling the soil with a spring cultivator helps reduce overheating of the soil in summer, which affects its quality.

The three-body cultivator-hiller combines the functions of a row-crop and a continuous unit. The product is suitable for low-power tractors and is successfully used in the cultivation of potatoes, strawberries, corn and other crops. The device forms beds up to 60 cm high and 62 to 75 cm wide.

A milling cutter is an attachment for a cultivator that allows you to perform many agricultural jobs in one go. Milling cutters differ in the shape of the knives, as well as their design. Standard weapons are saber-shaped.

The knife is a strip curved at the ends. The four cutting objects are made in the form of a block, which is connected by bolts. The number of blocks that can be installed on a machine is related to the power and weight of the equipment.

DIY cone splitter. Simple design to facilitate manual labor

Before the start of the heating season, owners of wood-burning stoves and solid fuel boilers stock up on firewood. Buying or preparing logs in the forest and then bringing them to your own yard is not a big problem. And cutting round timber into logs using a chainsaw or a circular saw will not be difficult. Many hours of exhausting labor creeps up in the form of a heavy cleaver, wedges and a hammer, with which the logs are split into logs.

Such an unproductive and labor-intensive method simply could not be ignored by home craftsmen trying to mechanize this work. One of the devices that can easily and quickly chop firewood is a cone splitter. Considering its simple design and the ability to use improvised materials in the work, we suggest making a mechanical screw cleaver with your own hands. In addition, everything that is required for this can be purchased in the online store of accessories for screw wood splitters, click here at manufacturer’s prices. The catalog contains cones of different diameters, fasteners and ready-made kits that all you have to do is attach them to the walk-behind tractor or engine.

Operational safety

When working with an automatic wood splitter, you must follow safety precautions, which consist of several rules:

  1. You can turn on the engine only after securing the block to the machine.
  2. Do not reach out to knives that are already working on wood.
  3. Do not adjust the log while the unit is on. First you need to turn off the electric motor and wait for the blades to stop.
  4. Do not use the wood splitter while intoxicated.
  5. Do not connect the electric drive to faulty sockets.

Also, you should not repair mechanisms with the motor running, because this can lead to damage to the tubes and spills of liquids. At the same time, for repairs it is best to use the same parts so that the characteristics of the unit do not change.

Are you now planning to use a homemade wood splitter when preparing firewood?

Screw cleaver - what is it?

The simple design of the cone log splitter is very effective if you need to chop several cubic meters of firewood

You can split wood without much effort using a screw splitting splitter. To understand how this device works, it is enough to remember how, in the process of unsuccessfully screwing a screw into a wooden strip or plank, these objects split at the point of physical impact. It’s easy to combat this phenomenon - just pre-drill a hole for the self-tapping screw, and it will go like clockwork. The principle of splitting wood when screwing in a screw was used by home craftsmen in the design in question. But a simple screw does not move the fibers apart enough, so it was modified by greatly increasing the taper and reducing the ratio of thread depth to tool diameter. The result is a screw, which is a symbiosis of a wedge and a self-tapping screw. The device is easily screwed into wood thanks to the threaded part and breaks it along the fibers due to the multiple increase in the diameter of the tool.

Screw log splitter diagram

Depending on the design of the drive, there are several types of screw splitters. In some, the screw is mounted directly on the shaft of the electric motor. In this case, the requirements for the power unit are quite stringent - the electric motor must be low-speed (no more than 500 rpm) and quite powerful (at least 3 kW).

The scheme in which the cone is installed directly on the electric motor shaft is suitable only for low-speed power plants

In other screw splitting schemes, electric motors of any type are used, and a reduction in rotation speed is achieved through the use of mechanical gearboxes, belt and chain drives. In this case, a pulley (sprocket) of small diameter is installed on the shaft of the power unit, and a large diameter is installed on the shaft of the wood splitter cone. The ratios of their sizes are selected so as to reduce the rotation speed of the electric motor to an acceptable 300 - 500 rpm . Sometimes, when using high-speed motors, it is impossible to achieve this without significantly increasing the diameter of the driven sprocket (pulley). In this case, an intermediate shaft and a double (stepped) transmission are installed.

Requirements for a cone splitter

The design of the screw splitter should ensure not only high reliability and performance, but also safety during operation. Therefore, when choosing the design of the unit and its manufacture, it is important to adhere to the requirements for equipment of this type and the recommendations of the craftsmen who have tested the machine in action.

Flexible transmission is a simple and affordable way to change the speed of rotation of the propeller when using high-speed electric motors

  • the electric motor power should be in the range from 2 to 4 kW;
  • to reduce the number of revolutions, it is recommended to use a gearbox or flexible transmission;
  • cone screw rotation speed - no more than 500 rpm;
  • the machine must be equipped with an on/off button (magnetic starter) and a residual current device (RCD);
  • the cone shaft is mounted on bearing supports;
  • the cone must have a persistent thread;
  • when driving with a belt, it is better to use double-ribbed pulleys and a pair of V-belts;
  • During operation, the supply of logs must be carried out with their vertical orientation, otherwise the screw may jam and damage the installation.

You should not follow the lead of the “craftsmen” who offer the simplest design of a wood splitter, in which a shaft with a wedge-shaped screw is clamped into the chuck of a powerful electric drill or hammer drill. Such a device not only has low efficiency, but is also very dangerous, since it will not be easy to hold it in your hands with the increased resistance of the wood. If you still decide to use this scheme, then try to secure the tool on a solid base in order to use it in the traditional way.

To obtain a mobile design, an internal combustion engine is used to drive the machine

The process of recreating a homemade screw wood splitter for a walk-behind tractor takes place in several stages:

Selection of material and technical base;

Creating a homemade drawing. We offer ready-made ones. The standard dimensions of the installation should be within the range of 850 x 400 x 650 mm, and the splitting screw itself will have a diameter of 8 cm, length - 28 cm, length of the cone neck - 90 mm, parts with machined threads - 19 cm. The thread pitch is best done within 6-7 mm;

Making a cone for a wood splitter for a walk-behind tractor - we will need a steel block, which is shaped into a cone shape on a lathe. If you do not have such equipment or skills at your disposal, you will have to order it from a specialist

At this stage, it is important not only to maintain the proportions indicated above, but also to maintain the inclined angle. Subsequently, it will depend on the size of which wooden trunks it will be used for;

After you have turned the cone and cut a thread on it, you need to take care of the seat with which it will be aggregated with the walk-behind tractor pulley

The optimal diameter is 34.85 mm, although smaller values are acceptable. The cone neck must have a smooth cylindrical surface, which is an adapter between the base diameter of the cone and the specific diameter of the sleeve (adapter). To ensure that a homemade wood splitter from a walk-behind tractor is no different from its production counterparts, a number of grooves for technical and operational purposes are made on the neck of the cone: the 1st, located next to the seat, will serve to lock the bolt from shifting the axis and pressing it onto the motor shaft; 2nd – serves to press the cone from the shaft to protect the thread from damage; We create a fit for the cone of the wood splitter from a walk-behind tractor - ideally it should be keyed with a 10 mm groove; We assemble the bearing assembly as described in the video. To do this, you will need to buy a shaft with bearing struts, which are placed on a horizontal surface. In order to save money, it can be replaced with a pulley from a VAZ crankshaft, 2 motorcycle sprockets and a metal chain (belts); Adaptation of the support platform - its width should not be less than 450 mm. Made entirely of cast iron or steel or just the countertop; We install the motor - it is better to place it at the bottom of the homemade product, the screw - on the work table. The screw should not be placed higher than 20 cm from the tabletop: this could cause it to tip over and injure others.

What is needed for making

Making an “iron lumberjack” does not require the use of scarce parts, so most components and blanks can be found at home or in the garages of friends and acquaintances. Here's what you'll need during the process:

  • cone (you can grind the screw yourself or purchase it on the construction market);
  • shaft (if you make your own threaded wedge, you can use a suitable hub from agricultural machinery);
  • pulleys or sprockets;
  • drive belt or chain from automobile or motorcycle equipment;
  • bearings with housings (supports for car driveshafts are an excellent option);
  • steel profile pipes or angles for the frame;
  • metal sheet with a thickness of at least 4 mm for the desktop;
  • electric motor;
  • wiring;
  • switch or magnetic starter;
  • RCD;
  • bolts and nuts M8 or M10.

Most parts can be used from old automobile or agricultural equipment . The only thing that may be difficult is making a cone screw. However, you should not even try to cut this part using a grinder, as some “authoritative” sources advise. The time spent is not worth the resulting misunderstanding, which can only indirectly be called a screw. Moreover, in operation this “carrot” will not even come one iota close to the efficiency that a cone made by turning will give.

Main components of a cone log splitter

If you plan to use the wood splitter as a mobile unit, then you should take care of durable metal wheels in advance. A truly mobile design is achieved using a gasoline or diesel engine as a power plant.

When making a machine, you will need tools that any “handy” owner will have:

  • welding machine;
  • electric drill with a set of drills;
  • Bulgarian;
  • hammer;
  • set of wrenches;
  • tape measure, marker.

Any enamel for exterior use is suitable for protection against corrosion. It is only important to thoroughly prepare the metal surface for painting, so if necessary, prepare a metal brush (manual, or in the form of an attachment for a drill or grinder), a primer and a rust converter.

Homemade wood splitter - what and how to do

If you have the necessary materials, then it’s easy to make a wood splitter with your own hands: drawings, photos, instructions are freely available on the Internet. For this you will need:

  • various metal scraps;
  • Bulgarian;
  • welding inverter;
  • ability to cook;
  • ability to draw up and calculate diagrams;
  • creative ingenuity.

Rack splitter - diagram and manufacturing

The easiest way is to make a rack wood splitter with your own hands: drawings, photos, instructions for which are posted on the Internet. Its basis is a powerful steel frame, to which a wedge, motor and gearbox are attached. To make it, take an electric motor with a power of at least 2 kW and two pulleys with a diameter ratio of at least 1:4. You can also use gearboxes from various mechanisms with transmission ratios over 8:1. If you don't have an electric motor, but have a gas engine from a saw or trimmer, you can connect it. In this case, you will have to increase the transmission ratio of the gearbox even more due to the too high speed of such a motor. Make a knife for a wood splitter from sheet steel at least 1 cm thick, sharpening it at an angle of 90 degrees. To work with thick logs, it is necessary to make a compound knife so that its thickness is at least 5 cm, and reinforce it inside with a steel blank of a suitable shape.

Approximate diagram of a rack wood splitter

The gear of the rack and pinion mechanism should be 4–6 cm higher than the frame and located from the knife at a distance equal to twice the length of the log. In addition, it is necessary to make a carriage that will ride on the bed. The height of the carriage must correspond to the installation height of the rack and pinion gear. On the front (facing the knife) side of the carriage, install a transverse plate that will act as a pusher. For it, use sheet steel with a thickness of at least 7 mm. Install any hinge on the carriage that will allow you to raise and lower the rack, and also attach a spring to lift the rack above the gear. Install and secure the return spring, which will move the carriage towards the gearbox. Install a lever on the frame that will press the rack against the gear. With this lever you will control the operation of the wood splitter - when the lever is pressed, the rack comes into contact with the gear and moves forward. If necessary, cut the rail with a grinder - it should be slightly shorter than the distance from the feed plate to the knife.

Hydraulic wood splitter - materials and drawings

To make a hydraulic wood splitter with your own hands: drawings, photos, instructions for which you will find below, you will need:

  • electric or gasoline motor with a power of over 2 kW;
  • oil pump;
  • oil tank;
  • high pressure hydraulic hoses;
  • control unit;
  • hydraulic cylinder;
  • I-beam or U-shaped metal beam;
  • metal corner with a shelf size of 30–40 mm;
  • sheet metal 0.5–2 cm thick (it is advisable to stock up on pieces of different thicknesses).

Approximate diagram of a hydraulic wood splitter

Make a frame from an I-beam or U-shaped beam. The wider the beam, the more load the frame will withstand and the more difficult it will be to transport the wood splitter. Therefore, the optimal width of the beam is 10–15 cm. Fix the hydraulic cylinder above the beam at a height of 5–7 cm and install a pusher made of sheet metal 7–10 mm thick at the end of the rod. Make a housing for the knife so that it can be moved around the bed.

Knife of complex shape

To fix the knife in different positions, do the following:

  • drill holes with a diameter of 12 mm in increments of 5 cm along the bottom side of the frame;
  • drill 2 of the same holes with the same pitch in the knife body;
  • Insert 2 bolts with a diameter of 10 mm into the knife body from above and weld them;
  • Having adjusted the length of the working space, secure the knives with metal washers and nuts.

This way you can adjust the log splitter to different lengths of logs. Invite a good hydraulic engineer to connect the oil pump, oil tank, control unit and hydraulic cylinder into one circuit.

Preparatory work: approximate dimensions and drawings

Before taking up the tool, it is important to draw up at least a simple sketch diagram with the location of the main components and parts of the machine and indicating its main dimensions. In addition, you will need an electrical connection diagram, which you can involve a familiar electrician in working on. The diagrams and drawings of finished structures presented to your attention will help you correctly configure the wood splitter and avoid mistakes in its manufacture.

Layout of a log splitting machine

The most important step in the process of creating a mechanical cleaver is making a wedge, so let’s look at this in more detail.

The best material for a cone is tool steel, but not every turner will undertake to make a part from it - the metal has increased hardness and requires special handling. Most likely, the screw will be made of the most popular grade of structural steel - St 45. In this case, it is better to strengthen its threaded part by any available method - hardening, nitriding or carburization.

Homemade hiller for tractor

Homemade hillers with hedgehogs for the tractor.

Hello to all DIYers! Here is one of my homemade tractor attachments for your viewing pleasure. I made these hillers 2 years ago, they work flawlessly, photos of production are attached.

I used Autogen to cut out these circles.

And here are the homemade hillers after painting.

The hillers work perfectly, I processed potatoes for two seasons.

One comment on Homemade hiller for tractor

Congratulations from the Republic of Srpske.

Read about the most interesting section on your web page.

Kudos to you for that.

Imam eats prayer. I read the words “Homemade hiller for a tractor” by Author: Pavel Anufriev. How can I get in touch with Mr. Pavel Anufriev? I’m interested in the price of the cultivator and I don’t know where we’ll buy it, and we’ll beat it and we’ll fix it ourselves, and then we demand the size of the cultivator.

Praise to you and brotherly congratulations to Goran from the Republic of Srpska.

Congratulations from Republika Srpska.

I read very interesting articles on your site.

Thank you for that.

I have one request. I read the title “Homemade tractor for tractor” by Pavel Anufriev. How can I contact Mr. Pavel Anufriev? I am interested in such a cultivator, and I have nowhere to buy it, and I will be forced to build it myself, and therefore I need the dimensions of the cultivator.

Thank you for welcoming your brother Goran from Republika Srpska.

Types and principle of operation

There are several design options for a homemade hydraulic wood splitter for a tractor. They are divided according to the principles:

  • placement of the cleaver,
  • cutting part design,
  • method of activating the piercing part.

It can also be a moving structure, rigidly installed or mounted.

The system can be vertical, horizontal or combined - depending on the direction of application of force to split the wood.

The principle of operation of a homemade wood splitter on a tractor is that the tractor's PTO is used as the main force. The engine power acts through a transmission mechanism on a hydraulic piston, to which the heel with the piercing part is attached.

The design can include both the movement of the knife and the movement of the log onto a rigidly mounted knife as the main movement. More often, the main movement of the knife is chosen using the length of the piston. The movement of logs is used in suspended and horizontal structures.

This hitch works according to the following principle:

  • The log is located in a special chute opposite the knife.
  • Under the pressure of the piston, the log gradually moves forward.
  • Colliding with the knife after the push of the piston, the log splits into pieces.

In some models of wood splitters, it is the log that is fixed (the knife moves). But this does not affect the general principle of operation of the device.

Work order

  1. Think over the design.
  2. Work out the drawing.
  3. Purchase the necessary parts.
  4. Enlist the help of a welder.
  5. Proceed with assembly.

Before starting work, you need to clearly understand: you want to create a mobile or stationary structure. Then start developing the drawing. It must take into account the direction of application of force, the method of transportation, the design of the splitting ax, the algorithm for assembling all interacting parts, the length of the log being laid and other features. It is also important what the cutting part will be: a splitting cone, a single-edged tool or a multi-edged one.

Horizontal design

You will need a special frame-frame on which all the main elements of the unit will be placed. Determine the location of the log, the mounting of the hydraulic pump, the oil tank, the hydraulic distributor, the firewood catcher, the connection between the tractor PTO and the wood splitter, the rigid fastening (mechanism support), as well as the method of movement.

A hydraulic cylinder is attached to the installation site of the central screw of the tractor and installed on the frame, which pushes the piston with the cutting device of the wood splitter or log. A special gutter with a stop for laying logs is installed. The piston pushes the splitting tool - the log splits, the firewood remains on the frame or falls down.

In the case of such a design, it is necessary to provide for the length of movement of the piston in order to reduce the idle stroke using special limiters.

Vertical wood splitter

For such a design, a vertically located rigid frame will be required, along the guides of which the hydraulic cylinder rod with the cutting tool attached to it moves. The rod is activated by a handle. The log is installed on a special stand. The hydraulic lift is driven by the tractor PTO.

Hanging structure

Provides a conical split option. For this solution, you will have to mount a table-frame on which the log will be installed. A cone made of hardened metal with a special screw thread is attached to the tractor PTO. The log is pushed onto the rotating cone by the operator's effort and removed from it after splitting. A more complex version will require a hydraulic cylinder that feeds the log to the splitter.

To move a homemade wood splitter, you can use the lifting feature. Another way to move is to install a wood splitter on wheels.

What is more effective?

The method of creating a wood splitter with your own hands is more suitable for inventors and innovators who have resources, because it is necessary to think through many subtleties and details. The costs of materials and time spent are not always justified in an ordinary case, for example, if you need a wood splitter for your dacha.

In the Kolundrov online store you will find high-quality, safe and efficient wood splitters from the manufacturer. Delivery of orders throughout Moscow and throughout Russia is carried out.
