My walk-behind tractor » Walk-behind tractors » MTZ Belarus
The MTZ Belarus petrol walk-behind tractor is a powerful universal MB designed for processing (including inter-row) soil (ploughing, loosening, weeding, etc.), harvesting root crops, mowing grass, removing snow, transporting goods and as a drive to stationary units from PTO. Here we will look at the model range of the machine with technical characteristics, provide prices and reviews from owners, and consider the history, description and features of these mini tractors.
Active development of small agricultural equipment in the Soviet Union began in the mid-70s. The designers of machine-building enterprises were tasked with creating a reliable mechanized replacement for manual labor and draft horsepower for work on personal village farmsteads. One of the results was the Soviet heavy walk-behind tractor MTZ Belarus.
The basis was taken as a model of a single-axle mini tractor with replaceable attachments and power reserves for cultivating soft, medium and even heavy (solid) soils. The main functions were provided:
- plowing and harrowing of small plots of land;
- hilling potato and other root crops;
- making hay for domestic animals;
- transportation of various goods.
With the development of rural vegetable gardens and field farms in the 80-90s, the Minsk Tractor Plant, which developed a whole series of high-quality small agricultural machinery, took a leading position in the production of units in demand in rural areas.
History of MTZ Belarus walk-behind tractors
The first models of walk-behind tractors were positioned as lightweight universal field machines capable of performing basic work on land plots of 1-10 hectares. The first MTZ Belarus began to be produced in the USSR in 1978 by the Minsk Tractor Plant. To add transport functions, a trailed trolley was developed. The main production of small agricultural machinery was organized at a branch of the parent enterprise - the Smorgon Aggregate Plant (SAZ), opened in the summer of 1986 in Belarus.
The main feature of MTZ Belarus walk-behind tractors is their aggregation with main field implements and more complex equipment by coupling or transmitting driving force through an external power take-off shaft.
The classification of models is determined by the power of the power plant in horsepower and includes walk-behind tractors of the 05, 06, 08Н, 09Н, 12 series and the less popular 07BS and 10 on B&S and Mitsubishi engines. The most common models have gained popularity due to the conscientious execution of the established functional parameters:
- ease of use and service;
- small dimensions for its capabilities and good controllability in operation;
- undemanding to fuel and transmission materials;
- availability of spare parts and consumables;
- excellent maintainability.
Old Soviet MTZ walk-behind tractors were called “Belarus”, more modern ones were called “Belarus”
Initially, the walk-behind tractors were called “Belarus” (MTZ-05 and MTZ-06/12), but improved models of the 90s with foreign engines began to be called “Belarus”.
Types of attachments
A feature of Belarus walk-behind tractors is their versatility in the use of attachments. A wide range of opportunities opens up for MTZ owners. How long you need to use all the equipment is decided on an individual basis.
Below are the main types of attachments and their photos:
- Mills;
- Potato diggers/planters;
- Trolleys;
- Adapters;
- Harrows;
- Plows;
- Cultivators;
- Hillers;
- Blade shovel;
- Snow blowers.
The lineup
The first MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor weighing 135 kg was produced from 1978 to 1992 and became the basis for further development of small agricultural machinery. The model was intended for cultivating small plots of land: vegetable gardens, garden and household plots and other individual and municipal lands. The device was equipped with a domestic single-cylinder gasoline engine UD-15.
MTZ-06 is one of the most common walk-behind tractors used on private farms and small farmsteads. Thanks to the improvements adopted, the unit has found wide application in all climatic zones of agriculture. The new closed disc transmission and the presence of differentials on autonomous wheels make it convenient to carry out pre-sowing soil cultivation and other seasonal field work.
In 1992, the MTZ “08N” and “09N” models went into production, similar in production parameters and differing only in engine power. They represent a heavy line of small special equipment with expanded functionality:
- agricultural purposes - plowing, harrowing, hilling, haymaking;
- communal use - snow removal, lawn cultivation, path sweeping;
- transport functions - moving cargo, trawling logs.
Thanks to a wide range of additional equipment and the ability to move the power take-off shaft to the front position, the MTZ Belarus 09N model has become one of the most popular heavy walk-behind tractors on the post-Soviet small agricultural machinery market.
The most powerful modification MTZ-12 is designed to work on heavy and virgin soils. The large mass of a single-axle machine does not allow this model to compete adequately with modern two-axle mini tractors, which are more convenient to operate.
Additional field guns
Mounts are installed on walk-behind tractors for aggregation with additional tools. Mounted implements:
- Plows, harrows, cutters. Additional equipment is necessary for cultivating the soil, loosening, and cultivating beds.
- Hillers. The tool is used when forming furrows for planting/sowing plants and caring for them.
- Snow dumps. A walk-behind tractor equipped with a scraper becomes a tool for clearing the area of accumulated snow.
- Planters, potato diggers. Devices of all series support aggregation with active or passive field implements for vegetable cultivation.
- Grass mowers. When mowing vegetation, rotary or blade tools are used.
- Adapters. Special attachments for the convenience of the farmer. The addition converts the walk-behind tractor into a mini tractor.
- Trailer. The structure together with the apparatus is used to move heavy objects.
Technical characteristics and device
The frameless design using a cast iron transmission housing as a supporting structure has become an advanced step in the development of MTZ Belarus walk-behind tractors. A serious competitive advantage is the use of a closed clutch system, which compares favorably with its belt-based counterparts.
Engine range
The UD-15 engine, located on the model 05 walk-behind tractor, is a gasoline carburetor 4-stroke unit with one cylinder and air cooling. The main advantages are the simplicity of the design and the availability of spare parts. Rated power of 5 hp. enough to carry out field work on personal plots and small vegetable gardens.
MTZ-06 was initially equipped with a domestic SK-6 engine with a lever or pulley starting mechanism. An improvement in the power plant was the use of the Chinese WEIMA 177F engine with a displacement of 0.277 liters and an automatic shutdown system when the oil content is low. A more convenient launch design and a modern gas distribution system have made this design predominant in the production of medium-sized Belarus walk-behind tractors.
The most popular device MTZ-09 is equipped with a multi-purpose Honda GX270 engine (Japan) with low noise and vibration levels. The professional series of GX motors is widely used in construction and agricultural machinery, as well as in the manufacture of energy and industrial equipment.
In addition to the Japanese unit, model 09 was equipped with Lifan LF177 and Kipor KG280 engines (both China), similar in characteristics, the Belarusian DK-7 engine, which had a lower cost, and the Motor Jikov GH 1509 (Czech Republic), which was not widely used.
The specifics of using the MTZ-12 walk-behind tractor indicated the use of a powerful 12-horsepower two-cylinder unit SK-12 for its class, manufactured by the Petropavlovsk Small Engine Plant. The carburetor design with forced air cooling ensures unpretentious operation and high maintainability.
Transmission
It is a complex functional mechanism for transmitting torque from the power plant to the chassis or power take-off shaft.
The design of the traction gearbox of the MTZ type walk-behind tractor provides several forward and reverse speeds. The wheel differential and main gear transmissions are located in one housing, operate in an oil bath, maintaining high performance under long-term operating loads.
The multi-plate clutch, mechanically controlled from a handle on the steering rod, has a good safety margin due to its closed oil-filled circuit. The power take-off device is a splined shaft used to drive additional agricultural and other equipment.

Nuances of use
So that servicing the walk-behind tractor does not bring only trouble to the farmer, the selection of its parameters is carried out before purchase. If motorized equipment is needed only for working in garden beds (plowing, cultivating, hilling), it is worth using lightweight, low-power models. When working with such MB, the operator will be less tired, and the costs of fuel, lubricants and consumables will be minimal.
If a farmer plans to use equipment in cleaning the area, clearing snow or preparing food for animals, it is better to use more powerful models for this. They are capable of cutting grass from a large area in a short period of time. In addition, for winter use for snow removal, walk-behind tractors of the Belarus-09N (08N) series are used - their engine is capable of operating at ambient temperatures down to -20 °C.
Main advantages and disadvantages of the series
MTZ Belarus walk-behind tractors have become widespread and popular among users due to their serious competitive advantages:
- long service life - due to parts specially manufactured for long-term use;
- good efficiency - thanks to the use of modern ignition systems, gas distribution and optimal valve settings;
- low vibration and noise levels - due to the improved piston group design, balanced gearbox and perfect air intake design;
- comfortable handling - due to the forward displacement of the engine and the overall center of gravity of the walk-behind tractor and the use of pneumatic wheels;
- Wide functionality - the presence of a hitch and a remote power take-off shaft provides a huge range of work performed.
A large selection of additional equipment and a developed service network make the use of walk-behind tractors from the Minsk Tractor Plant accessible to many thousands of farmers. Among the disadvantages are the high consumer cost of mounted units and problems with switching speeds.
Manual
Detailed instructions for operating and maintaining the machine are provided by the manufacturer. It contains a description of the design, principles of operation of the model, diagnostics and repair of the device. For trouble-free operation of the walk-behind tractor, the user needs to break it in correctly and promptly change consumables and components.
Frequent malfunctions, repairs
Agricultural equipment operators are faced with failures related to the operation of the engine or transmission. Frequent malfunctions of walk-behind tractors:
- The engine does not develop the required power. Failure occurs due to clogging of the power system, formation of carbon deposits on the walls of the combustion chamber, and general degradation of the motor. After diagnostics, the defective parts are cleaned or replaced.
- Problems starting the engine. Difficulties arise due to malfunctions in the power supply or ignition systems. They will require cleaning and subsequent adjustment.
- "Floating" speed. Interruptions in engine operation occur when there is poor contact in the high-voltage ignition circuit. All wires are inspected, problem areas are crimped, sealing the connections.
- Transmission malfunction. Failures occur due to breakage of the clutch cable, control rods, abrasion of friction discs or destruction of gears. The malfunction is eliminated by replacing the defective parts.
Repairs to the device should be carried out in accordance with the instructions.

Reviews from owners of MTZ Belarus walk-behind tractors
A year ago I bought a Belarusian-made MTZ 09 series walk-behind tractor with a 9-horsepower Honda engine. The engine starts without difficulty, even in hot or cold weather. I changed a few things once after the break-in. Excellent power, weight, unpretentious. There is a small criticism towards the gearbox - it is difficult to change gears, sometimes with a bang. But these are trifles against the background of his efficiency and invaluable help with work in the village.
Ivan, Minsk
I own a MTZ-09N walk-behind tractor with a 9 hp Honda engine. for about a year now. Despite its declining popularity, I consider it one of the most reliable. There are a lot of advantages: high power, not particularly demanding, large weight for good traction with the soil, large selection of lubricants, durable clutch, steering lock. For plowing virgin soil, I bought heavy lugs - it’s quite easy to plow even difficult soils.
One of the disadvantages of the walk-behind tractor is that spare parts for the engine need branded ones; it is quite difficult to find analogues. And I had to dig around with the hitch.
Anton, Orenburg
I have an old Belarus 09N MTZ brand, bought by my father back in the early 1990s (it is definitely more than 20 years old) then with a UD-15 engine (over time they changed it to a Honda, because crooked hands broke the rod). Even then, I mocked the walk-behind tractor as best I could - it’s amazing that it’s still working! During this time, even the gearbox was not repaired. I think the unit will still serve my son and even grandson. If you want durability, quality and reliability, take MTZ Belarus.

Description
Minsk Plant has been producing reliable and durable agricultural machinery for more than 80 years. However, the first example of a mobile single-axis soil-cultivating tool saw the light only in 1978, when the word “walk-behind tractor” was not yet used in everyday life. The prerequisite for the development of manual gasoline equipment was the need of small agricultural farms, as well as municipal enterprises, for mobile traction units. The first Belarus walk-behind tractor (Belarus MTZ) was designed to replace manual labor and draft horsepower for work on personal village farmsteads.
