Crawler agricultural tractor (Challenger MT-800B)

Designed to work in conjunction with mounted, semi-mounted and trailed machines and implements on farms, in fields, for harvesting all types of crops.

Mobil-trac chassis, track width and track.

The Mobil-trac system combines the speed, agility and versatility of rubber tires with the benefits of a crawler track - good traction, high flotation, smooth ride and low ground pressure. The original Opti-Ride suspension system guarantees a smooth ride both in the field and on the road. The design uses Marsh Mellow springs, which separate the “hard crossbar” from the frame that connects the Mobil-trac system to the chassis. The front axle can tilt up to 8°, allowing each track to rise independently up to 150mm at its centre. The middle wheels of each of the tracks can also be hung without support. The MT800B model has two pairs of rotating carriages. Standard track size is 2286 – 3251 m.

Any of the models takes up less than 3 m in width in operation and during transportation.

Intellitronics electronic control system and tractor control center.

The control center is mounted to the driver's right on a console that rotates with the seat for ease of access. The control center includes the monitor and all controls for the transmission, hydraulic system, hitch and power take-off. The online tension control system shows the pressure applied to each belt:

  • the upper limit has been reduced, which allows you to warn of possible belt damage due to excessive load;
  • a new lower limit has been set, which makes it possible to avoid belt sagging;

The engine and transmission are integrated into a network of intelligent electronics, Intellitronics, which controls gear shifting in accordance with the operating mode. The transmission has a wide range of operating modes - sequential shifting, skip shifting, continuous shifting, sequential pulse shifting, advance selection shifting and speed-dependent shifting.

Engines.

The MT 875B is powered by the state-of-the-art clean Cat C18 ACERT engine, the largest displacement engine available in any agricultural tractor. The power of this unit is 570 hp. s. (424 kW).

The air-cooling control system uses turbochargers to supply cool, clean air to the combustion chamber. Electronics control the volume of air required at different loads and speeds. The use of cylinder heads with intake and exhaust ports on opposite sides and, if necessary, four valves per cylinder significantly improves cooling.

The HEUI fuel supply system ensures timely, multiple injections of small volumes of fuel into the combustion chamber. The HEUI system operates independently of engine speed, so fuel consumption can be controlled during ignition retard and main injection.

One Touch Headland Management System.

This is a one-touch reversal control system that allows you to program repetitive functions. The system allows tractor operators to record the entire cycle of passage through the field, including functions such as changes in engine speed, gear shifting, raising and lowering attachments, power take-off and hydraulic valves. The system is equipped with an audio guide.

"One touch" records a sequence of functions. Pressing the switch once at the end of the field will start the equipment lifting sequence, and moving the switch to another position will automatically resume operation.

Transmission and transport speed.

Gears are changed when the clutch is not disengaged. Full power is transmitted through each of the 16 forward gears and 4 reverse gears. There are nine separate clutch discs - 7 rotating and 2 stationary. There are only two clutches for each gear, improving efficiency compared to the usual three in other transmissions.

Intellitronics intelligent electronics network for smooth gear shifting. Before the transmission shifts, it receives engine load information to make shifts as smooth as possible.

There are eight gears in the operating speed range of 6–15 km/h. For operation at speeds of 0.67–5.6 km/h, an additional low gear can be installed.

Challenger tractors have a transport speed of 40 km/h.

Power control system.

Optimal developed power is achieved by monitoring engine load and driving speed. The system automatically changes gears and controls the throttle to maintain the highest possible speed.

The constant engine speed mode is used to work with the power take-off mechanism. Constant engine speed in the same gear improves fuel efficiency.

To maintain the driving speed selected by the tractor driver with a light load, the system selects the engine speed and changes gears, coordinating them with changes in the load on the engine.

Additional features.

  • Air compressor.
  • Heating of the engine and transmission.
  • Three types of drive wheels, intermediate rollers and rollers.
  • Additional weights for rollers and chassis.
  • Wide movable hitch.
  • Hitch eye with hydraulic boost.
  • Swivel three-point hitch.
  • Front hitch (fits CAT II, III N and III Dealer).
  • Additional 5th and 6th hydraulic valves.

Service.

An oil change is required every 500 hours of operation (for MT745 - MT755B) or every 250 hours of operation (for MT765B - MT875B).

Engine cooling fluid has an extended service life of 6000 hours.

Hydraulic system and coupling device.

The Load Independent Flow Division (LIFD) system ensures smooth and coordinated hydraulic system operation. It evenly distributes the oil flow among devices in proportion to their needs. Standard hydraulic flow of 166 l/min provides quick response and large power reserves (223 l/min optional on MT 800B - EU only).

There are four valves as standard, expandable to six.

A three-point hitch with a lifting capacity of 14,000 kg is used. A swivel trailer is also available upon request (not installed on the MT875B).

Cabin.

The cabin is mounted on an insulating suspension, ensuring driving comfort. Air suspension seat. The Surround-Flow system provides ventilation, air conditioning or full climate control. The system has additional openings and air ducts to intensify air circulation, the flow of which is 11.3 m³/min.

The steering wheel has a built-in spinner ball design, specially designed for crawler tractors.

The cab's rear pillars are tilted forward to provide visibility to the attachments. In addition, the seat swivels 25 degrees to the right and 10 degrees to the left.

Selection of tracks and their tension.

The track is tensioned within the track chain link, not between the two axles. This makes it easy to adjust the tracks and reduces the load on the tractor chassis.

Tension within a track link reaches 2,900 psi. inch, which creates a load of 222 kN.

Three types of tracks: general agricultural purpose, with shallow grooves (Low Tread Bar) and for use in extreme conditions. Inside the tracks are specially positioned durable steel cables for maximum lateral strength.

For MT 800B there are 3 width options: 699–914 mm (27.5″–36″).

Due to the high structural and technological complexity of the machines, their maintenance requires highly qualified personnel.

Challenger tractors are extremely demanding in terms of maintenance, quality of fuel, oil, and lubricants.

Special knowledge is required when operating and repairing on-board equipment and intelligent systems.

The cost of Challenger tractors produced in 2013-2015, depending on the modification and internal filling, ranges from 270,000-280,000 €.

Perhaps the high cost is the only drawback of the machines, but for real professionals this is not an obstacle.

Possible malfunctions:

The engine will not start:Lack of oil or fuel; There is dirt in the air or fuel filter; The spark plug does not produce a spark; The carburetor is not adjusted correctly.
Brakes do not work:The free play of the pedal has increased (adjust its position); The brake disc or pad is worn out (replace the relevant parts).
Starter does not work:Broken or poor contact of the wire (solder or connect it); Weak battery charge (charge it); Short circuit (clean the commutator surface or replace the brushes); Poor contact of the magnetic switch (tighten the switch travel by 2-3 turns).

Device and purpose

Challenger crawler tractors are used in various sectors of the national economy. They can be used in agriculture, road construction, and when planning plots of land. The machines have high power and productivity. An excellent traction force allows you to move harrows, cultivators and other attachments over uneven surfaces. The working width can be up to 12 m, which is economically beneficial.

The units have good maneuverability and are universal in use. The suspension features allow the middle wheels and front axle not to contact the support and maintain stability. Tractors are equipped with powerful engines. To increase power, a turbocharger is used to supply air to the combustion chamber.

The system supports fuel consumption control using an electronic device.

The machines have good environmental characteristics, the level of toxic emissions is minimal and meets the standards.

For good maneuverability, a system has been created that performs a one-touch turn. The electronic system coordinates the operation of all components and mechanisms. The hydraulic system consists of a standard pump and an optional unit. There are 4 hydraulic valves installed on the machine.

Three types of tracks are installed: with shallow grooves, for general agricultural work, and for extreme conditions. You can adjust the tension of the track, the strength of which is ensured by steel reinforcement. This arrangement of the chassis system makes it possible to reduce slippage and increase the maneuverability of the tractor.

The cabin is characterized by increased comfort, is large in size, has good visibility, and is equipped with an insulating suspension that prevents vibration. The cabin has a climate control system and improved sound insulation.

There is a GPS system that ensures parallel movement during agricultural work. Good maneuverability allows the equipment to be used both in large areas and in confined spaces. The high efficiency of the equipment is combined with efficiency and ease of use. The only drawback is the high cost, but other advantages compensate for it.

Application area

The main area of application is work in the field, with a high load. These tractors can be combined with disc harrows, wide-cut cultivators, subsoilers, seeders, etc. This tractor will also be used in logging, road construction, and land reclamation. High traction characteristics allow this equipment to be used on any terrain and in any conditions.

Wide tracks provide a large contact area, which minimizes the load on the soil, its compaction, does not disturb the soil structure and maintains its productivity.

Thunderstorm of the fields - Challenger MT865 tractor (part 2). Cabin interior

We started the story about the Challenger 800 series tractors (link at the end of the article), revealed the main technical characteristics and promised to continue. Today I want to talk about the cabin decoration and controls.

Chalanger tractors have always been regarded as the most advanced on the market. Including the level of comfort. A good modern trend: driving modern large tractors is becoming easier and easier and no more difficult than small ones.

The tractor cabin and operator's position provide good visibility. The glazing is almost one hundred percent all around, from floor to roof. Cabin volume - 3.06 m^3.

The direction of movement is controlled by turning the steering wheel of an unusual ergonomic shape. A steering wheel with such outlines can be easily rotated with one left hand. The operator can adjust the steering column angle.

The ignition switch has four positions: 1) the power supply is turned off (on the street, the “ground” can additionally be turned off); 2) the second position allows the use of systems that provide operator comfort: radio equipment, cabin heating and air conditioning fan, window cleaners, etc.; 3) in the third position, all available tractor systems are turned on; 4) fourth position for starting the engine.

The multifunction light switch is located on the left of the steering column. In general, there are questions about the quality of work of external lighting devices; the lamps of John Deere tractors of a similar class fill the space much better.

To the right of the operator, at the top above the glass, there is another console on which controls for working lighting, control of rear-view mirrors, hazard warning lights, side lights, flashing lights and others are located. The console is illuminated by a light bulb located on the ceiling. There is also a prepared place for connecting a radio.

Work lights help the operator better control the operation of hitches and attachments. What is convenient, there is a delay relay for turning off the working lights (programmable from 0 to 15 minutes): after stopping the engine, some of the lights continue to work, allowing the operator to safely leave the tractor at night.

The climate control controls are located on the right rear pillar.

The dashboard contains all the indicators that allow you to assess the condition of the tractor. In addition to the speed and engine hour indicators, there are indicators for turning on tractor and trailer turn signals, indicators for turning on automatic steering and transmission control systems, a PTO operation indicator, battery status, indicators for various malfunctions (clogged filters, etc.), oil pressure, air pressure, fuel level.

There is a speed retarder pedal on the right side of the cab floor; when pressed, the engine speed drops in proportion to the pressure. This function is convenient when making a turn on the field. When the pedal is released, the tractor returns to the set operating mode. It should be added that this additional equipment is not available on all tractors.

On the left is the creep pedal, which is necessary to quickly reduce the load on the tractor. The brake pedal is located in the middle.

The comfortable operator's seat has many adjustments. You can adjust the lumbar support, back angle, seat height, rigidity, move forward or backward. The seat can be fixed. The shock absorption works in the longitudinal direction over a range of up to 51 mm. The seat can also be rotated for a better view of trailed and mounted units.

The transmission control lever, the fuel supply control lever, the tractor hydraulic system control, the control of automatic steering and tractor power control systems and other “intelligent” things are located under the right arm on the armrest. We’ll talk about these systems that make it easier for the machine operator to do the work next time.

Thank you for being with us!!! See you soon!!! And be sure to like and subscribe to the channel!!!

Challenger MT 865C crawler tractor. The cost of the model is $450 thousand.

The Challenger MT 865 C is designed for work that requires high traction power: when using subsoilers, wide-cut cultivators, disc harrows, pneumatic seeders or trailed scrapers.

The tractor is powered by a Caterpillar C18 ACERT engine, manufactured using the latest technology and meeting Tier III standards. The engine is equipped with turbocharging, Common Rail systems, and full electronic control. The Power Management System automatically controls engine speed and transmission functions for maximum performance and economy.

The tractor is equipped with a Powershift transmission with 16 forward and 4 reverse gears. This transmission is specifically designed by Catterpillar for track-type tractors and is capable of transferring the enormous power and torque of the engines directly to the tracks. The simplicity of the transmission design ensures its reliability.

The maximum speed of the tractor is up to 40 km/h. It can also travel on public roads.

The patented Opti-Ride suspension ensures smooth movement of the tractor over rough terrain: four semi-independent suspension rollers on each bogie move independently of each other, allowing the truck to follow the terrain. Stabilizer links and springs isolate the cross member from the chassis. The left and right carts also move independently of each other.

The advanced Mobil-Trac system provides better flotation and ride quality at high speeds and mobility, improved traction and less ground pressure.

Wear-resistant polyurethane track rollers are highly resistant to chipping and fracture. In addition, they are protected along the entire length by a dirt shield, which prevents soil or stones from getting on them.
