Fiat Ducato is a popular Italian van that is in great demand among Russians. Among foreign cars of this class, this is the most affordable option on the domestic car market. Besides its low cost, what else is attractive about the Fiat Ducato? Reliable design, good technical parameters and efficiency. “Italian” is universal and is offered in 17 different modifications. This allows each client to choose the version that best suits them. Fiat Ducato will be an excellent option for any potential car owner.
Model history and purpose
1st generation
The Fiat Ducato was first presented to the public in 1981. The debut generation remained on the assembly line for quite a long time - until 1993. The model was jointly developed by specialists from PSA Peugeot-Citroen and Fiat. The car differed little from the classic vans of the time. The angular, heavy and large Fiat Ducato did not stand out from the city traffic at all. True, the model was offered in several modifications and color options. At the front there was a protruding bumper, and rectangular headlights, a radiator grille and the brand logo were placed in one structure. The truck could carry up to 10 passengers. The line of power units included diesel and gasoline engines.
In 1989, the Italian automaker “refreshed” the appearance of its product and performed a restyling. Technically, the model has remained virtually unchanged, maintaining the same characteristics. The transformations affected exclusively the interior and exterior. There are higher-quality finishing materials on the inside, new headlights on the outside (a single unit for head optics and turn signals), a revised smaller radiator grille and larger mirrors.
2nd generation
The changes did not seriously increase demand for the model, so in 1993 Fiat presented a completely new version of the Ducato. The car has lost the previous angularity of the body, becoming much more interesting. The model has increased somewhat in size, and the list of engines now includes a 2.8-liter engine from Iveco and its turbocharged version. Fiat Ducato finally got rid of the radiator grille, and the previous elongated hood was significantly reduced (the angle of inclination became larger). In 1999, the manufacturer introduced specialized variations of the minibus: Ducato Combi (passenger-cargo version), Ducato Goods Transport (for transporting goods) and Ducato Passenger Transport (passenger version).
The Goods Transport version came with 2.0-liter petrol and diesel units. The engine lineup also included 2.8- and 2.3-liter JTD units. Transmission options were a 4-speed automatic transmission and a 5-speed manual transmission. Passenger Transport accommodated 6-9 passengers and was equipped exclusively with a 2.3-liter JTD turbodiesel (110 hp). The Combi version could transport both cargo and people (up to 9 people). There were configurations with different engines and payload capacities.
In 2002, the model underwent restyling. The model has noticeably changed, adding dimensions and carrying capacity. At the front there is a new brand nameplate mounted on a redesigned radiator grille. The hood line received an even greater slope. The model has become much more attractive.
3rd generation
In 2006, the Italians released the third generation of Fiat Ducato. This generation is still offered today. The new Fiat Ducato turned out to be daring and dynamic, immediately winning many flattering reviews (the best commercial vehicle of 2009 in Russia). The car, made in the Centro Stile Fiat style, had clearly defined proportions. It was based on aerodynamic lines inherent in high-speed trains. The manufacturer has traditionally offered the Fiat Ducato in 3 versions: chassis, passenger transport and cargo van.
The third generation immediately attracted attention thanks to its complex front light optics, visually reminiscent of boomerangs, massive bumpers, clearly defined roof pillars flowing into the wings, and a track radiator grille. In addition to its good looks, the Fiat Ducato III was also practical. So, the front bumper was made of 3 parts, so replacing it was faster and required less money. Successful aerodynamics of the front area reduced the drag coefficient to 0.31 (the best figure in the segment). The model's interior stood out for its comfort and functionality. Features included new upholstery, elegant lines and sophisticated ergonomics. The developers moved the gear shift lever to the center console, making it easier to control. The dashboard has become both practical and elegant.
The variety of modifications of the car determines the wide possibilities of its use. The third Fiat Ducato has more space and load capacity. The van is distinguished by convenient unloading and loading due to wide doors and low thresholds, which is why it is actively used in commerce. The spacious body reduces the number of trips and increases efficiency. Moreover, the model can carry out transportation both outside the city and within the city. Fiat Ducato is adapted to Russian conditions. Passenger variations are used as minibuses, family transport and commercial buses.
Specifications
The latest Fiat Ducato meets increased demands with increased load capacity and larger dimensions. In top versions, the model can carry up to 2000 kg and has a total weight of 4000 kg. For vans, the loading volume is 17 cubic meters, and the length of the cargo compartment is 4 m. The loading height has been reduced to 530 mm, which makes work easier. The maximum useful cargo volume for the version with an extended wheelbase is 12,000 liters, for the version with a short wheelbase - 7,500 liters.
In the field of economy, Fiat Ducato can safely be called one of the leaders. The car is characterized by:
- extended service interval (45,000 km);
- low fuel consumption (10-16% less than analogues);
- low cost of repairs.
The dimensions of the model depend on the version:
- Combi: length – 5099 mm, width – 2024 mm, height – 2470 mm, wheelbase – 3200 mm.
- Minibus: length – 5599 mm, width – 2024 mm, height – 2580 mm, wheelbase – 3700 mm.
- Panorama: length – 4749 mm, width – 2024 mm, height – 2150 mm, wheelbase – 2850 mm.
Engine
The new Fiat Ducato uses 3 types of Common Rail turbodiesel with multipoint fuel injection and electronic control:
- 2.2-liter 100-horsepower Multijet;
- 2.3-liter Multijet (120 and 130 hp);
- 3-liter 157-horsepower Multijet.
The latest generation of car units are flexible and powerful and have high torque (250-400 Nm) even at low speeds. This guarantees a quick start and short acceleration time, providing the driver with maximum comfort and driving pleasure.
Multijet units use multi-phase injection technology developed by Fiat. Unlike Common Rail turbodiesels with the old two-phase injection system, these engines are more efficient and economical. The power plants are also equipped with an intercooler. The fuel does not freeze even at very low temperatures, since an electrically heated filter is installed in the fuel system. This is especially important for operation in Russia.
Other engine characteristics:
- number of cylinders – 4;
- cylinder arrangement – transverse in-line;
- maximum acceleration speed – 145-150 km/h;
- compression ratio – 19:01;
- fuel tank capacity – 90 l;
- environmental class - Euro – 4;
- average fuel consumption – 8.4 l/100 km.
Characteristics of transmission and suspension
The Fiat Ducato is designed according to the classic design - with front-wheel drive and a 4x2 wheel arrangement. The overall frame contains the main parts of the system. Independent suspension is installed in the front area. It contains:
- anti-roll bar;
- telescopic shock absorbers;
- coil springs;
- cross levers.
At the rear there is a dependent suspension, which includes:
- telescopic shock absorbers;
- travel limiters;
- leaf springs.
Some models have air suspension.
Fiat Ducato is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. The single-disc clutch has a hydraulic release.
The rack and pinion steering and braking system are equipped with hydraulic boosters. The brake mechanisms on the front and rear wheels are disc. The car has electronic ABS and EBD systems for brake pressure distribution.

Device
Fiat Ducato stands out for its well-tuned design. The model has an independent MacPherson-type front suspension with telescopic shock absorbers, coil springs, anti-roll bar and wishbones. A torsion beam with springs, elastic travel limiters and shock absorbers are installed at the rear.
The car is driven through a 5-speed manual gearbox. A 6-speed automatic transmission is also available. Steering – rack and pinion with amplifier.
Particular attention is paid to safety in Fiat Ducato. The developers have tried to equally guarantee maximum quality and protection at all levels: passive, active, preventive. The model received a 2-circuit brake system with disc brakes. Also included in the “base” are EBD (electronic brake force distribution) and ABS systems. The Fiat Ducato has an airbag and special programmed deformation areas that reduce dangerous damage in a collision. Side airbags, ESP, front airbags, ASR and curtain airbags are optionally available.
The manufacturer paid great attention to ergonomics. The interior of the Fiat Ducato is extremely welcoming, and there is practically no vibration or noise inside. The cabin has many small shelves, niches and drawers.
Design
The design of the car has a very modern and stylish look. It is very different from the original versions, where angularity and roughness of forms prevailed. The new Fiat Ducato has the following external characteristics:
- bends on the body;
- large windshield;
- reduced hood;
- new quality of lighting;
- high level of sound insulation.
The headlights are now equipped with LEDs. The bumper consists of three parts - this makes it easier to replace if damaged and reduces repair costs.
Body and interior characteristics
The salon is equipped with an updated dashboard. It contains:
- large on-board computer screen;
- red backlight;
- deep-set indicators.
An unusual innovation for the Russian driver - the handbrake is located on the left. There is also a chair adjustment lever. It can change the position of the backrest and seat height.
Passenger seats can be double or single, depending on the model. In the first case, the central seat can be transformed into a table if necessary - to do this, you need to lower the backrest forward.
In the cabin, an adult can stand up to his full height; the ceiling height is 1.9 meters.
The Fiat Ducato interior has a large capacity - there are many compartments for things, documents and small items. Storage spaces are located:
- on the doors in the form of pockets;
- under the seats;
- on the panel;
- in the center of the salon.
There is a special holder for a smartphone or tablet.
When closing, the doors make a pleasant click, typical of expensive cars. This is partly due to the reinforced body, due to which the entire structure has acquired rigidity and does not emit metallic clanging. The hinges and roller mechanisms of Fiat Ducato doors are reinforced and reliable - they have a very long service life and break only in exceptional cases.
New Fiat Ducato: characteristics and advantages
The modern Ducato has become the brainchild of Centro Stile Fiat, which has retained the main advantages of the car of previous generations: front-wheel drive, excellent suspension (McPherson strut in front, springs with telescopic shock absorbers in the rear), recognizable exterior, convenience and reliability.
The body is available in three main variations, has excellent streamlining with a record low coefficient of resistance in the class (0.31), and the capacity of the van has increased. The practicality that a commercial vehicle requires is retained. For example, the new bumper has become composite, which reduces the cost of restoring or replacing it.
From now on, the carrying capacity of the Fiat Ducato reaches 2 tons, the useful volume of the van is up to 17 m³, the floor height is reduced to 53 cm. The car has become significantly more economical (consumes up to 16% less), the interval between services has been increased to 45 thousand. Although the latter does not work very well in domestic conditions. In practice, it is still recommended to visit a service station more often and change the oil.
The new Multijet engines operate with Common Rail injection (multipoint direct injection) and are coupled with improved automatic transmission-5 or manual transmission-6. The engines of the new Ducato are distinguished by flexibility in operation and increased torque, up to 400 Nm, which has a positive effect on their characteristics. Even a loaded car starts briskly and at ease, maintains excellent speed, significantly saving fuel.
However, many car owners remember with nostalgia the simpler Ducato of the first and second generations, which could be repaired almost on the knee. But their time has finally passed, so modern trucks with ABS, airbags, EBD, disc brakes, ASR, ESP, multimedia systems and a lot of other features in the “base” are becoming the norm, which makes using the Fiat Ducato comfortable and enjoyable.
