Description and technical characteristics of the Hyundai HD65 truck

Home Brands Hyundai Hyundai HD65

Hyundai HD65 is a small-sized truck for various purposes. The model was developed by a Korean manufacturer in 2009. It is designed to transport cargo weighing no more than three tons, in addition to a van or loading platform, it can also be equipped with a tow truck or a loader crane. This is an easy-to-use car that is designed to perform basic functions and does not require additional maintenance.

About the history of the model and its place in the Hyundai truck line

Compact Korean Hyundai trucks have been well known in the domestic market since the second half of the 90s. The most common model, according to Rosavtostat, has been the Hyundai HD78 for many years with a payload capacity of 4.6 tons. Another bestseller is the nimble “baby” Hyundai Porter and Hyundai Porter II, which takes a ton of cargo “on board”.

Hyundai HD65 is in the “cargo line” between them. or rather, between the Hyundai HD78 and the Hyundai HD35 semi-truck.

The first medium-duty Hyundai trucks were produced in 1987. They were not homegrown cars. Their launch into mass production was the fruit of cooperation between Hyundai and the Japanese concern Mitsubishi. The first generations of Hyundai medium-duty trucks, called “Hyundai Mighty,” were close to the original copies of the Japanese Mitsubishi Fuso Canter trucks.

Hyundai Мighty HD65, also known as Mitsubishi Fuso Сanter, at the turn of the 80s/90s.

But since 1998, Hyundai has already been producing trucks, each of which can rightfully be called the Korean company’s own development. The Hyundai Mighty trademark, which formally includes both the HD65 and HD78, has experienced a revival today. In 2015, a grand presentation of the modern Hyundai Mighty truck was held in Korea, and in 2017, assembly of two modifications of the Mighty began in Russia.

The Hyundai HD65, which was also assembled here at the Kaliningrad company Avtotor, on the contrary, left the Russian market, and from now on it can be purchased in the Russian Federation only in a used version. Production of the Hyundai HD65 continues only for third world countries - such as Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, etc.

What pressure should be in truck tires?

Pressure indicators for trucks are divided into three types:

  • Maximum. The maximum permissible pressure is specified by the truck tire manufacturer. It is usually applied to the side of the tire. Constantly inflating a tire to this level reduces its wear resistance and increases the likelihood of dangerous situations on the road.
  • Optimal. This value is determined from a table that indicates the recommended pressure for a specific amount of cargo being transported. Owners of trucks usually focus on the optimal value: maintaining it ensures a long service life of the tires and economical fuel consumption. It is difficult to adhere to the optimal value, since it requires frequent monitoring and inflation of the tire.
  • Recommended. This value is usually indicated by the manufacturer for each wheel. Recommended pressure for truck tires is calculated for maximum load conditions. When transporting cargo whose weight is significantly lower than the maximum permissible values, tires are inflated to a level below the recommended level. Load and speed indices (maximum values of these parameters) are indicated in the tire markings.

Often, the operating instructions indicate two pressure values for truck tires - one for an unloaded vehicle, the second for a vehicle with a maximum load. If one value is indicated, then it is intended for an empty car. For heavy loads or long-distance trips without luggage, it is recommended to inflate the tires by 0.3-0.5 bar.

To independently select the pressure level in a truck tire, you should:

  • Take a table with optimal values for a certain vehicle load.
  • Select a value taking into account the axis on which the wheel is located.
  • Read the manufacturer's individual recommendations.

Purpose and uses of Hyundai HD65

As already noted, the Hyundai HD65 was created specifically to perform all tasks associated with the daily transportation of goods and various cargoes within the city limits and on the “near intercity”, within the region. Compact dimensions, agility and maneuverability ensure the fastest possible movement in difficult conditions of urban congestion, making turns on small sites, optimally convenient loading/unloading of goods and cargo even in inconvenient parking areas. The Hyundai HD65 truck is characterized by significant productivity at low costs and, therefore, a quick payback.

In the version with a one-and-a-half-cab equipped with a compact berth, the vehicle can also be used to transport goods along interregional routes. Although, of course, the Hyundai HD65 is poorly suited for long trips on highways: the cabin is cramped and there is not enough comfort, the dynamic characteristics when loaded do not go beyond 80 km/h. Hyundai HD65 is a “city dweller”.

The effective air conditioning systems, ABS with EBD and auxiliary hydraulic devices used on the Hyundai HD65 help ensure driving comfort and safety; increased productivity and commercial returns. The integrated EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) system and four-channel ABS are designed to prevent loss of control and uncontrolled sliding of the vehicle in cases of sudden braking. To increase the safety of the driver and passengers, seat belts are equipped with pretensioners.

In addition to the on-board cargo platform, Hyundai HD65 vehicles are most often used with such chassis add-ons as: manufactured goods or isothermal van, refrigerator, crane-manipulator unit, auto tow truck, auto-hydraulic lift.

Factors affecting tire pressure

This indicator is significantly influenced by the time of year. When the temperature rises to +20 °C, it increases by 0.7 bar, and when it drops to -20 °C, it drops by 0.6-0.8 bar. When vehicles are heavily loaded and during long trips, the changes in indicators will be greater.

During constant use, it is recommended to monitor the tire pressure of a truck using sensors 2 times a week. This must be done in cold tires (the tire temperature is equal to the ambient temperature), since during active use the tire warms up, which leads to an increase in performance. When pumping cold tires, follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Modifications of the Hyundai HD65 truck

  • Hyundai HD65 Narrow is a car with a narrow standard cab, built on a wheelbase of 2,820 and 3,375 m (early cars had 2,550 and 3,375 m);
  • The Hyundai HD65 Wide is a wide-cab truck available in short, long (one-and-a-half-bed, sleeper) and crew (six-passenger) versions. Wheelbase size – 2,750 to 3,415 m.

Front and rear suspension

The units are assembled from spring leaves (half-ellipse in cross-section) and hydraulic shock absorbers. Axle buffer stops are mounted on the frame.

Equipment options

During the sales years of the new Hyundai HD65, these trucks were available in two trim levels: STD and DLX. In both versions, the base had the following options: spare tire, power steering, brake force regulator, tachometer, exhaust brake, floor covering, heated rear-view mirrors, tow hook, interior heater, passenger sun visor, audio preparation and antenna , ABS with EBD.

The DLX had, but the STD did not, the following options: bumper painted in the color of the cab, power windows, central locking, front fog lights, wood-effect front panel trim, audio cassette player with AM/FM radio, tint strip on the upper part windshield, digital clock.

As additional options, for an additional fee, the following were offered: power take-off, air conditioning, driver's seat with spring suspension and lumbar support.

The Hyundai HD65 chassis is also used to produce Hyundai Country and 439-FT buses, common in Asia.

Modifications of the HD65 differ not only in the size of the cabins and wheelbase, but also in the engines. Trucks of this model are equipped with in-line diesel power units of our own production.

Design

These trucks are built on a common platform. The only difference is the width of the cabin. On model 65 it is the narrowest. The design itself remains the same. So, the car uses halogen optics with fog lights at the bottom. PTFs are integrated into the bumper. The car also has a large glass area. The windshield is one-piece, made using triplex technology.

For ease of entry, a metal footrest is provided. Due to the small width, on light-duty Hyundai HD-65 models the mirrors are mounted on long arcs. Otherwise, the platform is no different from its other “brothers”. At the end of the article, we will consider what cargo platforms are installed on it. In the meantime, let's visit the inside of the Hyundai HD-65.

Hyundai HD65 car engines

All trucks of this model were equipped with four-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engines with direct injection of diesel fuel and a liquid cooling system. One of the main differences is the presence of conventional mechanical or electronic control of the injectors. To improve the quality of the working mixture and optimal performance, all engines installed on the Hyundai HD65 in the 2010s began to be equipped with an electronic “Common Rail” diesel fuel supply system.

There are three engine options: a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated diesel engine Hyundai D4AL with a power of 100 hp, a 3.3-liter turbocharged diesel engine Hyundai D4DB with a power of 115 hp, and a 3.9-liter naturally aspirated engine Hyundai D4DD with a power of 120 hp In recent years, the Hyundai HD65 diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger with intercooling has become the predominant option for the Hyundai HD65. Its power is 140 horsepower; maximum torque – 579 N.m (at 1400 rpm), environmental standard – Euro-4. The working life of all Hyundai HD65 diesel engines is at least two hundred thousand kilometers. The actual diesel fuel consumption for each engine is within 15-20 liters per hundred kilometers.

Hyundai HD65 truck transmission

All modifications of Hyundai HD65 trucks are equipped with the same five-speed manual gearboxes. Gear shifting is done mechanically, using the good old floor lever. But it is possible to factory install a hydraulic or pneumatic gear shift drive.

All gears, from first to fifth, are equipped with synchronizers. To lubricate the components and interacting mechanisms of the gearbox when operating in temperate climates, SAE 80W gear oil should be used.

The engine is connected to the gearbox using a dry-type single-plate clutch. Pressure plate with elastic diaphragm. The service life of the device is 120-140 thousand km before repair with replacement of parts. The clutch life between repairs is at least 120-140 thousand kilometers. The clutch drive is hydraulic type. The tubular driveshaft consists of 2 parts and is equipped with a support bearing. The hinges are assembled on needle-type bearings. The floating rear axle is equipped with a hypoid type gearbox with a single gear.

Truck tire pressure

Publication date: 08/12/2020

Truck tire pressure is an important parameter that has a significant impact on the performance characteristics of the vehicle. It mainly affects ride comfort, tire service life, fuel efficiency, braking distance and vehicle stability.

Frame, chassis, suspension, brakes Hyundai HD65

The reinforced frame is made of heat-treated steel and has increased rigidity and an impressive margin of safety. This is a reliable basis for placing all the components and components of the truck. The frame is reinforced with transverse traverse parts and fastened with bolted joints. Spars act as load-bearing elements of the body with a cargo platform, springs and suspension.

Trucks with extended chassis are used to optimize the transportation of large-volume, light-weight cargo. To do this, the frame and driveshaft of the car are lengthened. An onboard platform is selected accordingly, and most often, of course, a large van.

The Hyundai HD65 suspension was assembled on semi-elliptical leaf springs with double-acting hydraulic shock absorbers. The front axle of the truck has single wheels and the rear axle has twin wheels. Wheel tires are tubeless on newer vehicles, and tube tires on older trucks. The braking system consists of service, parking and mountain brakes. The working brake system is dual-circuit, hydraulic, with a vacuum booster. The parking brake is a tension type, on the cardan shaft. The mountain brake is a vacuum type valve.

As is typical for almost all car models of the late twentieth century, disc brakes are mounted on the front wheels, and drum brakes are mounted on the rear wheels. The parking brake is activated by a cable from inside the vehicle's cabin. The exhaust brake is activated by a toggle switch located on the instrument panel of the machine.

Externally, the truck looks like a smaller copy of the medium-duty trucks of this brand. Access to the interior is easy, the cabin is set low, and there is only one step at the entrance.

Hyundai commercial vehicles are very popular in Russia; just remember the Porter delivery truck, which for a long time remained a sales leader. Or, for example, medium-tonnage models HD65/78, which are also in great demand among Russian carriers. However, now another model has appeared in this family - the HD35 with a gross weight of only 3.5 tons. Sales will start in the near future, and if so, then it’s time for us to get acquainted with the Korean light-tonnage truck.

As is known, a wide range of add-ons can be installed on cars of this type: from vans to tow trucks. We were provided with a truck with a tilt cargo bed and rear hinged doors for testing. You can drive a light-duty vehicle with category “B” license, since its total weight is only 3.5 tons.

The interior at first glance seems rustic, but there are no mistakes in ergonomics

Externally, the Hyundai HD35 looks like a smaller copy of the best-selling HD78. While maintaining the design, the cabin was reduced in width, but otherwise everything is similar. The same slanted headlights, metal bumper, flowing lines of side windows, widely spaced rear-view mirror brackets and side lights on the roof.

Access to the interior is easy, the cabin is set low, and there is only one step at the entrance. In addition, both doorways have handrails, and the doors themselves swing open very wide, one might say, at a right angle.

The steering column is adjustable in two positions, and the gearshift lever is located on a special podium

The inside of the cabin is no smaller than it appears from the outside. Even in the narrowed cabin of the test truck, three full-sized seats were retained, and the internal dimensions give no reason to complain about cramped conditions. The cabin interior is done in gray tones and at first glance seems a little rustic. The finishing used may not be expensive, but quite high-quality materials. There is no bare metal visible, with the exception of the rear wall of the cabin, which is not lined with anything. The driver's seat with lateral support is adjustable in only two positions, but coupled with the ability to change the position of the steering column, it allows you to quickly find the optimal fit. And the pedal assembly is arranged well. The controls are all at hand, but there are not so many of them. To the right of the driver on a special podium is the gearshift lever, and right there is the parking brake lever. On the instrument panel there is the required minimum: speedometer, tachometer, fuel level indicators and engine coolant temperature indicators. But everything was done conscientiously. The scales are easy to read, and the indicator lamps are visible even in bright daylight. The buttons located to the right of the driver are large, you can’t miss them even in the dark. The disadvantages include the lack in the cabin of the required number of various niches, boxes and compartments for storing necessary things on the road. There is only one small glove compartment opposite the passenger seat, one bottle holder and a couple of pockets in the doors. Well, another reproach for the Korean light-duty truck is the lack of hooks for outerwear.

To get to the engine, just release a couple of clamps and, with a little effort, tilt the cab by hand. She will stand on the stopper herself. Putting it back down is just as easy. Quite simple and at the same time functional design. As for daily maintenance, everything is fine with it too. A minimum set of tools is stored behind the seats. You can wipe the windshield directly from the ground. To add technical fluids and check the oil level, you will have to tilt the cab, however, taking into account the above, this is not a problem.

With the cab tilted, access to the engine is possible from all sides

When the cab is tilted, access to the engine is free from all sides, and for some service operations it does not even need to be raised. For example, the air filter is accessible directly from the street; its housing is mounted behind the mudguard of the front right wheel. Adjacent to it is a windshield washer reservoir with a convenient neck, and liquid can be poured into it even from a bucket.

Under the cabin of the Hyundai HD35 there is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder diesel power unit with a capacity of 136 hp. With. Euro 5 standard. The engine is paired with a manual 5-speed gearbox.

Rear suspension with 3-leaf springs

The chassis is not distinguished by any innovative ideas. But we did not find any punctures. The ground clearance is acceptable, there are no stupidly protruding parts from below and behind, and the engine is covered by elements of the front suspension. By the way, the suspension on the tested truck itself is completely leaf spring with anti-roll bars on both axles. The brake system is hydraulic with disc brakes on all wheels.

The Hyundai HD35 was equipped with a tilt side platform with rear hinged doors manufactured with a volume of about 15 m3, with aluminum folding sides and rear hinged doors with imported stainless steel fittings. For ease of entry, a handrail is provided, and the rear underrun guard serves as a step.

As a superstructure there is a tilt side platform with rear hinged doors

The superstructure is made at a fairly high technical level and meets the necessary safety requirements. The same company installed underrun bars on the sides and rear of the truck. Among the pleasant little things, we note the presence of a tool box mounted on the frame, a tightly closed battery compartment and a key-locked lid of the 65-liter fuel tank.

After a short trip in a Korean truck, we can say the following. First of all, I would like to note the comfortable fit. Driving the HD35 you feel quite confident, almost like in a car, only you sit higher. The high seating position provides excellent visibility, and the rearview mirrors minimize blind spots. I would like to note the good sound insulation of the interior and the absence of vibrations on the controls.

A confident start in first gear is possible from a minimum speed; the engine is quite torquey and confidently accelerates the car. The pedal assembly is simple and convenient, the effort on the pedals is optimal, and there is a platform on the left for resting your feet. I liked the operation of the gearbox joystick, first of all for its selectivity - the gears are switched clearly, you get to the desired one right away. There are also no complaints about the smoothness of the ride; even an empty car does not cause much shaking. Handling did not disappoint. The car behaves exactly as you'd expect.

Excellent maneuverability in the city and in warehouse areas is combined with stability on the highway. When maneuvering, the truck does not lean much in turns; the steering wheel is moderately light, with excellent feedback. Hyundai HD35 left a very positive impression. There are, of course, shortcomings, but overall I liked the car. It has good driving characteristics and a decent level of comfort. There will be no problems with maintenance and the availability of spare parts, because Hyundai has the widest developed dealer network in Russia. It remains to wait until the prices are announced, and then a lot will become clear, and the potential buyer will only have to decide on the add-on.

pros

Three-seater cabin, you can quickly and comfortably sit in the driver's seat, ease of maintenance and repair, high-torque engine.

Minuses

Insufficient number of various shelves and niches in the cabin for things needed on the road.

NOTE

RELIABLE. The battery pack is tightly sealed from bad weather and unfriendly glances.

COMFORTABLE. The pedal assembly is arranged well; there is a platform for resting the left foot.

Truck driver's cab and workplace

The cabin of the Hyundai HD65 truck is three-seater, but, of course, it cannot be called spacious. If three of us go somewhere in it, then only for a short time and not in winter. Otherwise, the Hyundai HD65's cabin is more comparable to that of a passenger car than a truck. The seating position is comfortable and the visibility is excellent. The steering column is adjustable both in angle and height. If desired, even a heavy-set man 185 cm tall can get quite comfortable behind the wheel of a Hyundai HD65.

The cabin tilts 50 degrees, rising forward using torsion bars and providing easy access to the car's engine. The interior of the car is decorated with synthetic materials that are easy to clean and wash. A sleeping bag installed on the roof of the extended cab provides the driver with comfortable conditions for rest on long trips. The sleeping place is insulated with a foam layer of 60 mm thickness.

Efficient power steering provides smooth and precise truck control. Thanks to this design, excellent maneuverability and stability are guaranteed. The car feels confident in dense city traffic, on the sites of warehouse complexes, and on unloading spots near supermarkets close to home.

The driver can control the movement without stress, calmly maneuvering in confined spaces. The steering mechanism and hydraulic booster are made in the same housing and are a single unit. The control action from the steering wheel is transmitted to the steering bipod through the elastic element of the driven shaft and the rack and pinion piston.

Cabin

The cabin can be made in one of two options. A standard 3-seater or a double-length version with 6 seats is available. The seats are equipped with reliable seat belts.

Climbing into this space occurs using an aluminum step, which has a grooved top surface that helps prevent slipping. For passenger and driver comfort, the truck cabin is equipped with insulation against noise and vibration, which conceals external influences.

The cabin has large glass areas, which provides the driver with an excellent overview of what is happening around. Large side mirrors also serve the same purpose.

The interior of the 3-seater cabin is spacious (in the 6-seater it is, of course, noticeably larger). The arrangement of objects inside the cabin of the Hyundai HD65 resembles that accepted in passenger cars. The dashboard of the truck is made taking into account ergonomics; the seats for both the driver and passengers have a comfortable design. There is a space behind the seat that is large enough to accommodate the driver's tools inside.

The equipment installed in the cab includes a heating unit, which allows you to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the truck even in frosty winter times. This space is also equipped with effective ventilation. The truck is equipped with electric windows, and the rear cabin mirrors are heated. The basic package includes a tachometer.

The instrument panel in the cabin is lined with wood. A removable table can be placed in the center of the space. In addition, the cabin can be equipped with a radio.

If there is a need to examine and repair the engine, it is possible to tilt the cab forward at an angle of 50°, which makes access to the truck engine easier.

Reviews from owners and drivers of the Hyundai HD65

Numerous reviews from owners of the Hyundai HD65 indicate that the car is extremely durable, not “capricious”, and insensitive to diesel fuel of poor quality and to changes in drivers. It starts without problems, even in severe frosts. High-torque, wear-resistant, “work truck” for everyday work in any intense mode. Excellent profitability, high performance, rare breakdowns, quick payback - qualities that are most valuable in commercial vehicles, and the Hyundai HD65 is fully endowed with them.

Everyone is also unanimous in assessing the shortcomings of this car: both owners and drivers. Firstly, the Hyundai HD65 does not have external electrical wiring to the lights and tailgate equipment protected. Secondly, the sound insulation in the cabin is poor. It does not properly dampen the sounds from the road surface, nor the touches of the torsion bar suspension cabin, nor the measured rumble of a diesel engine. Felt doesn't help. Intentions to “make good noise insulation” are usually put off by owners “for later”, and remain only intentions.

Thirdly, the car’s carrying capacity is somewhat overestimated. If you constantly operate it with a maximum load load for some time, then suspension parts begin to fail prematurely. Especially if the roads in the city are bad, then the suspension and chassis suffer doubly. And the springs become a real “headache”. But the springs from our buses - PAZs - are ideal for the Hyundai HD65.

Fourthly, no one likes the hard and uncomfortable seats that were equipped with the Hyundai HD65 in the base. You can't sit on these for a long time without your back getting tired. And when purchasing a car, there were very few people willing to pay a couple of tens of thousands extra and get an optional driver’s seat with spring suspension and lumbar support. Basically, everyone was “greedy” and took a truck with an ordinary “seat”. As a result, even simple seats in the GAZelle are much softer and more comfortable on a long trip than the usual ones in the Hyundai HD65. In addition, the GAZelle generally rides more smoothly: in a GAZelle, the driver sits in the base, while in a Hyundai, the driver sits behind the front wheels.

The metal from which the cabin is made is not superior in quality to the GAZel one: also, over time, annoying “saffron milk caps” appear on it. But, as a rule, it does not reach the point of severe corrosion. When loaded, the Hyundai HD65 accelerates to no more than 80 km/h, and its “cruising” speed is 70 km/h. This is, of course, not enough for the highway. But for the city it is more than enough.

Cost of Hyundai HD65

As already noted, this model is one of those that recently left the Russian market. The remaining stock of new Hyundai HD65 trucks available to dealers has also been sold out, and now a vehicle of this model can only be purchased used.

On the secondary car market in Russia and the CIS you can find many offers for the sale of used Hyundai HD65 from 2005 to 2012. Most of them are with manufactured goods, isothermal, refrigerated vans on a chassis. There are separate offers for the sale of Hyundai HD65 with a crane-manipulator installation; auto tow truck; dump body. The price range, depending on age and technical condition, is between 380,000 – 1,850,000 rubles.
