Design Features

The new “saddle bike” has more than enough of these features. For example, batteries located in the rear overhang. They simply did not have a place near the fuel tanks, because there is now a container with urea there. And on the other side there is a huge exhaust gas neutralizer chest, where the chemical reaction of the AdBlue solution and harmful particles occurs. Because of this additional equipment, the batteries moved to the rear overhang. The only option for keeping the batteries in a more familiar place would be to refuse to install a second fuel tank. But this is not the best solution either, because to check the condition of the batteries, the driver will now have to uncouple the road train - there is no other way to get to the battery box. And if in Europe they don’t recommend poking your nose there, then in cold Russia it’s vital to look after your batteries. By the way, to solve this problem, engineers again used electronics, installing a battery monitoring unit. It controls current, voltage, and outside temperature. Analyzing these indicators, the unit provides information about the condition of the battery. Is it too much honor for conventional batteries? But the total volume of the two fuel tanks is 1300 liters.

The basic equipment of truck tractors includes a remote control panel for rear air suspension. The button for bringing the pneumatic into the transport position is duplicated on the front panel of the truck, which is very convenient. The “saddleback” uses a new pneumatic control system, which increased the speed of the air suspension by 20% and made it possible to abandon the third circuit of the brake system with energy accumulators. According to some reports, this one innovation reduced fuel consumption by 1%.

An interesting feature of the Actros is the absence of an oil dipstick. It is not installed in the database, and if desired, the probe can be ordered as an option.

The warranty period established by the Germans for the updated Actros truck tractor is striking: no less than 600,000 km, or 48 months. Naturally, it is valid only for Europe.

Engine

The standard package includes a power plant produced by the Mercedes concern with a capacity of 302 kW or 410 horsepower. For high-quality exhaust cleaning from harmful impurities, the BlueTec system is used. The principle of its operation is to inject the AdBlue component into the exhaust gases, which, due to the SCR catalyst, changes the structure of carbon monoxide, turning it into separate components - nitrogen and water. Thanks to this system, it is ensured:

  • emissions compliance with Euro 4 and 5 standards;
  • efficiency in terms of fuel consumption;
  • low content of solid particles in the exhaust, highly dispersed dust, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide.

Test drive Mercedes-Benz Actros SLT: super-heavy star

According to European rules, the transportation of super-heavy and oversized cargo must be carried out at night, so as not to slow down traffic on highways, so the movement of the convoy looks enchanting: through the night in the glow of flashing lights and with a bunch of additional lighting. In person, the spectacle is majestic and mesmerizing, and since the cruising speed is only 30 km/h, thoughts of slow motion even arise.

For what

It’s not every day that there is a need to transport super-heavy oversized cargo - this makes the driver’s job easier; in a good year, he drives a maximum of 10-12 thousand kilometers. But it greatly complicates the work of project managers and logistics departments.

The development and approval of the route can continue for many months. There is a known case when, in order to transport a turbine for a power plant, along the route of a road train they not only moved power lines, but even dismantled a railway bridge... It is clear that the cost of such projects is exorbitant, so few people are embarrassed by the price of the transport itself (from half a million euros per tractor excluding taxes plus a very expensive multi-axle trawl).

In Russia, it is customary to cope with tasks of this level with the help of military equipment produced at the Belarusian MZKT and the domestic BAZ. But this is not without problems: most domestic heavy transporters and road trains are military vehicles, and they do not fit into the usual 2.55 m width. True, Russian roads are wider than European ones.

Technically, it is very difficult to create such a vehicle for traveling on public roads - there are too many mutually exclusive requirements. But... When the developers were given the technical specifications for the new Mercedes SLT, the main slogan was: “nothing is impossible!”

Daimler AG has been producing super-heavy versions of Mercedes trucks for decades. The new super-heavy SLT series based on the Mercedes MP4 is a completely different approach to creating tractors of this class.

Let's start with the fact that Daimler met the wishes of the workers and tried to satisfy maximum needs. But the needs turned out to be so different that the result was two different cars: Arocs and Actros. With leaf spring suspension, BigSpace mid-cab and drum brakes, the Mercedes Arocs is capable of working in the toughest conditions, even in quarries. But the luxurious Actros with air suspension, the largest GigaSpace cabin and disc brakes is designed for use on good roads.

How

The production of such monsters will never become widespread - Daimler AG plans to produce 100-120 Mercedes SLTs per year, of which a third will be uncompromising Arocs, and two thirds will be comfortable Actros.
Most global manufacturers use third parties for such orders, and until recently, Titan and Paul NFZ were also engaged in heavy series of Mercedes trucks. Now they were left with only completely non-standard equipment, but for the rest they were transferred to the rank of suppliers, and they used their own facilities to produce the family. Technologically, everything is not so complicated. A standard chassis with the most powerful frame from the construction line is taken from the assembly line in Wörth, Germany. The frame is standard from a 30-ton construction truck, the height of the side members is 300 mm, the thickness is 9 mm, plus 5 mm are reinforcing liners. The OM473 engine (Euro-6) is an in-line six with a turbo compound and a recirculation system. Volume 15.6 l, maximum power – 625 hp. (3000 Nm).

The cabin, type of suspension and brakes are also determined in advance. Then the almost complete truck is brought to an assembly plant in Mölsheim, France, where it is partially disassembled and, if necessary, axles or drive axles are added. The machine can be ordered in any configuration – from 6X4 to 8X8. But the developers themselves place the main emphasis on vehicles with an 8X4 wheel arrangement with two front rotary axles.

It is clear that if everything were so simple, then there would be no need to fence the garden, because even so the standard Mercedes Arocs 4156 in the Heavy Duty version can haul a road train with a total weight of 120 tons. However, the Mercedes SLT carries twice as much – 250 tons, but that’s a completely different conversation. And the most difficult thing for a super-heavy vehicle is to start and then slow down. This is where the secret lies.

Overcoming inertia

Previously, a conventional “automatic” with a torque converter was used to start off.
But now Mercedes is offering a kind of symbiosis of an automated 16-speed PowerShift 3 gearbox and a double-action clutch. It’s worth taking a closer look at this unit. On the coaxial shaft there is a conventional “dry clutch” disc and a cut-down torque converter. Unlike the “donut” , it has only two wheels – driving and driven, but there is no reactor wheel. At the moment of starting, the dry clutch is open, and the road train moves off using a torque converter, capable of developing up to 3000 Nm due to the difference in rotation speeds of the driving and driven wheels. And as soon as the wheel speeds are equalized, the dry clutch closes - this ensures fuel savings. Naturally, the entire process is controlled electronically. Productivity is regulated by the amount of incoming liquid, which is taken from its own heat exchanger tank with a volume of 11 liters.

This clutch has two operating modes. Normal is used when the total weight of the road train is 60-80 tons. Heavy mode is for the heaviest weight; in this mode, the automated PowerShift 3 gearbox changes gears sequentially without skipping a single step.

Slowing down or stopping a 250-ton road train is even more difficult. For this, three systems are used: an engine brake, the efficiency of which has been increased from 375 kW to 450 kW, a retarder and a turbo clutch retarder from Voith - a total braking force of more than 1000 kW! And this is without using the standard brakes.

The second part of the SLT’s “secret weapon” is immediately noticeable - it is a separate module installed behind the cabin and produced in Aksaray, Turkey. The developers themselves call it a “cooling tower” or “cooling tower.” It is clear that the engine has a hard time in such extreme operating conditions. And to make his life easier, an additional radiator with a separate fan was installed in the “cooling tower”. Well, to optimize the process of modifying the car, a 900-liter fuel tank, a 75-liter synthetic urea tank, and the entire hydraulic system necessary to control attachments, with a separate 135-liter oil tank, were placed in the same module.

When I become captain...

Mercedes SLT drivers are not guys with nerves of steel, but as if they don’t have them at all. These are extremely calm men with extensive driving experience (usually more than 20 years), who have undergone special training and received permission to drive such monsters. Real work, like icebreaker captains, takes two to three months a year. And captain’s salaries are also among the highest in the industry. In addition to the responsibility for the extremely expensive cargo, they are responsible for maintaining the movement schedule... Plus the understanding that if the 200-ton generator breaks down or something simply goes wrong, it will be extremely difficult to survive.

Armed with all this knowledge, you climb into the familiar and very comfortable cabin of the Mercedes Actros GigaSpace. The interior is no different from that of standard cars, although with such a high cost of the car they usually do not save on equipment. You adjust the seat (one of the best in the class, by the way) and wait for the go-ahead to start. Adrenaline is going through the roof... And completely in vain! There is simply no drama in the driving process itself. You select the “power” gear shift mode with the right steering column lever, release the brake and... Everything happens as if in a dream.

Slowly and slowly, the Mercedes Actros SLT starts moving. Here, out of the darkness, the tail of the accompanying Opel appears with the inscription Polizei and a burning banner Folgen Sie/Follow me, and immediately moves off, trying not to run too far ahead. Here you already begin to feel like a pilot of a passenger airliner, which, by the way, weighs about the same.

We go to the highway... And then everything is extremely prosaic: four hours at a speed of 30-32 km/h, a driver change and another two hours. Arriving at the intermediate parking lot, that's it. Only 154 km have been covered, and the working night is already over.

While you're on the road, there's time to reflect on the fact that the Mercedes SLT, whether Arocs or Actros, was and remains an incredible exotic. The question of supplies is not even raised - the customer, if he needs it, will directly contact the Mercedes management, and they will build him exactly the car that will meet his specific goals and objectives...

Daimler AG is proud not only that it can create unique super-heavy trucks, but also that the entire Mercedes SLT line retains a proprietary warranty and can be serviced at any Mercedes-Benz Trucks technical center.

Although this advantage is dubious. With the excitement that arises with any appearance of the Mercedes SLT on the roads, it does not have to be serviced very often. By the way, maintenance is calculated, like for any special equipment, not by mileage, but by engine hours. And the service is not cheap at all!

What else is confusing? Yes, just the fact that even if you have money and desire, you will have to wait from nine months to a year for a finished car. The super-heavy stars of the Mercedes SLT are guaranteed universal attention during their lifetime, but they take a long time to be born and cost accordingly.

For the manufacture of the frame, 9.5 mm thick metal is used; in individual units there may be stiffening ribs that increase the strength of the supporting structure. Holes are made in the side members at intervals of 50 mm, which allows you to install any platform without using additional tools. This also reduces downtime, preserves the anti-corrosion coating, and has a positive effect on its durability. In the head part, the units are installed with bolts, which allows them to be dismantled if necessary.

Chassis

The Mercedes Actros 1841 tractor is equipped with a steering and lifting support axle equipped with the Telligent system. This has a positive effect on reducing the turning radius, ease of control, reducing fuel consumption, brake and tire wear.

The fifth wheel vehicle is equipped with an air suspension with two springs (front only), and the side vehicle with four. They are weight optimized and protected from corrosion, just like parabolic units. The standard assembly includes the installation of shock absorbers and stabilizers for both axles. This design improves dynamics and stability in the longitudinal direction.

On my way

One of the main technical innovations of the third generation Actros was the use of the updated automatic transmission Mercedes PowerShift 2. Here the Mercedes are ahead of the rest. In fact, the new Actros is the world's first fifth wheel with an automated 12-speed gearbox, installed not as an option, but as standard. The peculiarity of this “semi-automatic” lies in the absence of synchronizers. Now the rotation speeds during switching are compared by electronics. Similar synchronization systems using sensors are used in Formula 1. This allows you to slightly reduce switching time, while the service life of the clutch basket increases significantly. According to the manufacturer, the switching speed has increased by 30% compared to its predecessor.

Most truck manufacturers are abandoning V-shaped power unit designs in favor of in-line engines; Mercedes-Benz continues to follow its line and produces engines with two rows of cylinders. So our car has a traditional V-shaped “eight” BlueTec 5. The volume of the power unit is almost 16 liters, and the power is 510 hp. The maximum torque of 2400 N•m is achieved already at 1080 min-1. Impressive! It's not every day that you get to drive such powerful machines. How did this hero surprise us? Yes, practically nothing. Such a powerful engine behaves not like an upstart who wants to show everyone his strength, but like an accomplished heavyweight athlete, confident in his capabilities. The car simply moves forward and accelerates whenever you press the accelerator pedal, without sudden jerks or noticeable acceleration. Even when driving uphill, a road train with a total weight of about 40 tons can pick up speed without noticeable problems. True, acceleration cannot be called rapid, at least from a herd of 510 “horses” I expected much more. But the engine and automatic transmission are in no hurry. The car picks up speed slowly but clearly. There is a feeling of stateliness in the work of a diesel engine; he simply does not need to prove anything to anyone. And here the question arises: does a road train working with standard cargo on long-haul transportation need such power? Especially if you consider that all modern tractors are equipped with speed limiters... And even if the engine has at least 600 horsepower, and the MAZ in front has only 350, you still won’t be able to overtake it, because the car won’t go faster than 90 km/h.

But there are cases when such power can come in very handy. For example, if your truck is often used in mountainous areas with long climbs and winding serpentines. This is where the elements of powerful engines come in! Any overtaking on a mountain road is a struggle with the car and the load, and if the “iron friend” is a little weak, the driver is doomed to stretch upward for a long time and painfully, collecting a string of cars behind him. But this story is not about the Actros, because you can always intervene in the automated gearbox and engage a lower gear for better acceleration. To do this, you don’t even need to switch to manual shift mode, you simply forcefully downshift using the joystick, and then the “automatic” takes control again. Moreover, the gearbox allows you to both cycle through each gear and jump through one - for this there is an additional button under the joystick. But it must be said that there is practically no need to interfere with the work of electronic brains. The behavior of the automatic transmission is fully consistent with the road situation. There was only one little thing I didn’t like – the behavior of the “automatic” in a traffic jam. When the speed decreases, the gearbox helps to brake the engine, dropping the gears down. Each time you downshift, the engine speed increases noticeably, and an unpleasant rumble is heard in the cabin. A real driver would not push the gears lower and lower when braking and, wanting to stop, would engage “neutral” after the sixth gear. The “automatic” switches on IV, then III, and only after that neutral gear.

Another change in the third generation Actros is the new steering. The clarity of reactions to steering inputs is excellent. It even seemed to me that the steering wheel was set too sharply for a truck tractor. Why these rally reactions? But overall, driving the car is a pleasure; at speed, the steering wheel feels pleasantly heavy.

But the steering column switches are another “megacosm”, only this time in a negative sense. The right lever controls both the direction indicators and cruise control with retarder. Moreover, you can immediately adjust the intensity of deceleration or increase the cruise control speed limit. And in the “top” versions, the same switch also regulates the distance recorded by the radar for the operation of active cruise control and security systems. Horror! Was there an urgent need to dump all these functions onto one switch?!

An automatic transmission of our own production with 12 speeds guarantees the convenience, safety and efficiency of the Mercedes 1841 tractor. Depending on the situation, one of the modes is activated:

  • hysteresis cruise control with a large number of settings and adjustments;
  • free swing;
  • maneuvering;
  • efficiency;
  • power.

Additional functions are also installed on the car, thanks to which you can switch the gearbox from first speed to reverse, activate one of several reverse speeds, Kickdown. The Actros 1841 dashboard has a monitor that displays information about the operating mode and the gearbox control program.

If necessary, the gearbox can be replaced with a 16-speed one with one of four gear ratios.

History of Actros

The first model rolled off the assembly line back in 1996, and today the company has shown the 2018-2019 model year with video cameras that replace the side mirrors and two huge displays on the dashboard, but more on that later. Over the 22 years of production, the tractor has undergone many changes, but it still carries reliability, comfort and modern technology. The German manufacturer is so confident in the reliability of its equipment that it provides a warranty for 3 years or almost half a million kilometers (450,000).

The total weight of the line is from 18,000 to 41,000 kilograms. Truck tractors have several distinctive features, one of which is the presence of the Telligen system. The system allows for technical control of each truck unit. Due to careful monitoring of wear and timely detection of any “sores,” service intervals on a Mercedes Actros easily amount to 150,000 km.

Also among the features is the fact that Mercedes was the first company in the world to install a fully automatic gearbox on a truck in 2008. Today, more than 700,000 units of Actros in various modifications are traveling around the world, some of which are located in Russia. Moreover, a considerable part of the models are also assembled in Russia, namely in Naberezhnye Chelny, where production is established by a joint venture between KAMAZ and Daimler.

Of course, the German Aktros differs from the domestic KAMAZ in its high degree of reliability and comfort at a completely different level, however, it also has a “fly in the ointment”. Repairing a power plant is extremely difficult.

Driver's cabin

The cabin has 7 different designs, 5 of them have a flat floor, 2 have a 170 mm high engine tunnel. The amount of free space in the latter case is 1.46 m and 1.79 m. The length of the Mercedes Actros 1841 cabin is 2.3 m, width – 2.3-2.5 m, height – 4 m.

As standard, the interior is ergonomic and comfortable. It has a “sleeping bag”, a sun curtain, a shaving mirror, towel racks, and a chair that can be reclined by unlocking the backrest. The sleeping area is equipped with an elastic frame, an adjustable top and a high-quality foam mattress. The interior light is controlled by a switch located in the seating area. The same goes for the radio, heater and sunroof.

Design

The predecessor is considered to be the SK cargo model, the reliability of which to date has not been surpassed by any truck tractor. But due to its unattractive appearance and simply outdated design, sales declined significantly. The management of the Mercedes-Benz cargo division was faced with a serious task - to offer potential buyers absolutely revolutionary equipment. Actros became her in 1995. The truck received many electronic systems that negatively affected its quality. Along with electronic systems and modern design features, the car has an impressive exterior.

The rectangular cabin on a durable chassis, which is completely standard for trucks of this class, fully fits the entire style of the brand, reflecting their corporate identity. It won’t be difficult to recognize the Mercedes-Benz Actros among its competitors.

The huge windshield at the top was covered with a massive plastic visor, above which a pair of parking lights could be seen. Immediately under the windshield there are two huge handles and “legs” of the wipers. The company logo was duplicated on the all-metal plate in the very center. The main company logo was located in the very center of the huge false radiator grille.

The logo was no smaller than the size of the rim of a subcompact hatchback. The grille is made of plastic and has a color that is distinctive from the cabin. It consists of six transverse plates, which gradually narrow downwards. The style of the grille also extends to the side of the cabin in the form of a wide plastic plate into which the door handle is integrated. The model name is emblazoned in the corner of the grille. Under the grille there are several more slots that perform two functions at once: they are both a footrest and an air intake.

The optics have rectangular shapes and a two-story structure. On the upper floor there are side lights and a turn signal, and on the lower floor there is the main block of low and high beams. The image of the front of the truck is complemented by a small “lip” at the bottom.

The side of the cabin has square-shaped glazing and a metal plug on the berth. The lower part of the door has a characteristic cutout for the wheel arch, and immediately under the door there is a two-level step. There are side lights on the cabin and on the tanks on both sides, the arches have a significant expansion, and their number can be changed based on the modification and wheel formula. There are deep stampings on the doors of Mercedes-Benz Actros. The rear part of the cabin is complemented by fairings to improve aerodynamics, but the rear part traditionally depends on the type of towbar and modification.

The second generation was released in 2000. Changes in the design affected only the optics and the false radiator grille. The optics have lost their two-story structure and rectangularity, and the dimensions are now located at the very bottom of the bumper. The grille on the second generation was made in the same color as the cabin. The distance between the crossbars has become smaller, and the crossbars themselves have become wider.

In addition, the second generation received a new environmental class and a completely different level of comfort.

The third generation of Actros, released in 2008, can be recognized by the U-shaped false radiator grille with two or three crossbars (depending on the modification) and the presence of air intakes in the “lip” on the bumper. Additional plastic linings and “gills” appeared. There were no obvious changes, but the design seemed completely different.

The fourth generation has a completely “cosmic” design, the first copies of which rolled off the assembly line in 2012. The false radiator grille no longer had such an obvious truncation, but now its highlight was the perforated cross members. Also striking is the head optics in the shape of a boomerang and has an interesting content. Separately, round fog lights are located at the corners of the air intakes.

In September 2022, in Berlin, the German automotive giant showed the fifth generation of the Mercedes-Benz Actros. The changes affected more of a technical nature than an external one, however, there is something to catch on here too. The updated car received new shapes of air intakes, LED daytime running lights in the shape of the front optics and was deprived of side rear-view mirrors. Now they are replaced by two much smaller cameras.

For ease of maneuvering, a steering system with an increased gear ratio is provided. An option is to install a rain and light sensor, which guarantees safety when driving. Thanks to it, the windshield wipers are automatically activated, and in poor lighting conditions the low beam is switched on.

The control panel is backlit and comes standard with Telligent for height adjustment and a switch for returning to working position. Behind the driver there is a valve for supplying compressed air.

The displays in the interior of the Mercedes Actros 1841 tractor are well designed, the information on them remains readable thanks to the high-quality selection of font, color and size.

The spatial position of the steering wheel and seat can be adjusted to the individual characteristics of the driver. When the steering wheel is tilted at 10 degrees, it is easy to enter and exit the cabin and move around inside the cabin. On the steering column there are control keys for the telephone, radio and data system. The driver can use the diagnostic system, units, and auxiliary functions (from alarm clock to interior heating).

Cabin interior

The cabin interior experienced serious changes in the fourth generation and in the fifth, and if in the fourth generation the interior still corresponds to the interior of trucks, then in the fifth generation there is nowhere near such a feeling. The ergonomics of the interior are simply excellent; reaching any lever and key will not be difficult. Also pleasing are the seats, which, depending on the configuration, can be hard, soft and have their own air suspension. They also have heating, and they can be made of genuine leather. Since 2012, the seats can be equipped with a massage function with 4 operating modes. There is a flat floor between the passenger and driver's seats, which provides additional comfort. There is a full-fledged TV near the ceiling, and in the back, where the sleeping place is located, household little things are concentrated, making the trip a real vacation.

Each chair has individual adjustable armrests, and the steering wheel is electrically adjustable. The central dashboard is directed towards the driver and carries the main controls. Behind the 4-spoke steering wheel is a classic dashboard with two “recessed” wells.

The interior of the 2022 car may not differ much from the interior of a premium SUV produced under the same logo. Branded multifunction steering wheel, behind which, instead of a tachometer and speedometer, there is a 10-inch display that carries basic information. A similar display is located on the dashboard, which replaced a huge part of the keys.

In addition, the Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor has acquired two additional displays located in the A-pillars. They transmit images online from cameras that have replaced side rear view mirrors. It is also worth noting that the car has acquired a huge arsenal of electronic assistants that allow you to completely relax behind the wheel. Among them are such as “keep the car in the lane”, “stop the truck when a pedestrian is detected”, “active cruise control” and much more.

Brake system

The braking system of the Mercedes Actros 1841 ensures a minimum distance from pressing the pedal to stopping. This is due to the use of ABS and ASR, maintaining a pressure of 10 bar in the brake drive and internal ventilation of the discs.

The optional integrated braking system responds quickly to emergency situations, ensuring near-instant stopping. If the speed decreases without stopping, the wear-free brakes operate. The integrated anti-rollback system eliminates movement when stopping.

Ease of maintenance and operation

The ease of carrying out service work on the Mercedes 1841 tractor is due to the installation of separate modules in which functional units are concentrated. This reduces downtime and parts costs, which in turn increases profitability.

Hydraulic and fuel supply systems are completely sealed and durable. Consumables have a long service life, so service intervals have been significantly increased. Compliance with them will ensure long-term trouble-free operation of the machine.
