Daimler and the Chinese Foton have signed an agreement on the production and sales of Mercedes trucks in China: the assembly plant, in the creation of which they will invest 485 million euros, will begin producing Actros tractors adapted for Chinese conditions.

Foton Sauvana - Chinese SUV from the Stavropol Auto factory

Last Friday, the Chinese company Foton held a closed conference in Moscow for its dealers, both current and potential. At this conference, plans to launch new models on the market were announced, as well as cars that Foton will assemble in Russia were shown. The main news is that Foton plans to use the new Stavropol Auto plant for this, which is currently being built near the city of Mikhailovsky in the Stavropol Territory (according to the latest data, the opening is scheduled for the end of April). Photon representatives traditionally explain high prices by the “premium quality” of their products and the use of components from the world’s leading suppliers. In addition to the mentioned Aisin and BorgWarner units, Photons are equipped with Dana axles and ZF and Getrag manual transmissions (on various modifications). The diesel engine that the Tunland pickup is equipped with is Cummins branded - this is one of the variants of the Chinese-made 2.8 (163 hp) engine that is equipped with the Next Gazelles.

The Chinese see the pickup market place somewhere between the UAZ Pickup and Fiat Fullback, and the Sauvana SUV is compared to the Haval H8 and, no less, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. But, judging by the impressions of those who attended the above-mentioned dealer conference and were able to drive a Photon for a short time, the build quality cannot be compared with Toyota’s: the Chinese car has a substitute on the seats instead of genuine leather, there is no reach adjustment for the steering wheel and no electric seats. There is not even provision for heated seats, although it will apparently appear on Russian-assembled cars. At least Photon's management promised to do this.

Previously, the Chinese planned to use the Derways plant as a site: in mid-2016, Leo Liu, head of passenger vehicles at Foton in the Russian Federation, said that the assembly of cars in Russia at Derways facilities would become the foundation for the relaunch of the brand and a sharp increase in sales. And this growth is necessary, because in 2016, sales of Chinese-assembled Foton Tunland pickup trucks amounted to a modest 70 units. Judging by unofficial data, we are talking about the BelGee plant, however, the Chinese do not directly name the partner and explain the need for a “bypass” assembly by the short deadlines for bringing the model to the Russian market: they need inventory until the plant in the Stavropol region starts operating. The downside of this move is that OTTS issued for Belarusian-assembled cars will be invalid for Stavropol cars, so the certification procedure will have to be completed again. However, the Chinese are ready for this.

The sales plan is not to say that it is ambitious, but it is bold: in 2022, Foton plans to sell 1,415 cars, most of which will be Sauvana SUVs (1,100). Moreover, the main sales, according to forecasts, will occur in the fourth quarter (730 units). Apparently, Chinese marketers have planned their advertising budget accordingly. Or they simply believe in the rise of the domestic car market by the end of this year. In September it is planned to present new modifications of the Sauvana and Tunland models. The SUV will get the same Cummins diesel engine, but boosted to 177 hp, and the pickup truck, on the contrary, will receive a boost to 116 hp. a manual version and two trim levels with automatic transmissions, petrol (201 hp) and diesel (177 hp).

Sales of View minibuses will also continue. Plus, in 2022, new Chinese-assembled models will appear: the Gratour ix compact van and the Toano minibus, created in collaboration with the Daimler concern.
