New class, but not for us

Continuing the theme of getting to know the new products of the Hannover IAA-2012 salon, in this material I will talk about a completely new car from Daimler AG – the Mercedes-Benz Antos.
The intrigue was that in 2011, at the presentation of the fourth generation Actros, none of the representatives of Daimler AG even mentioned the upcoming new product. But the question whether a new budget Axor would be created “based on” the fourth “Aktros” was natural and was asked more than once. The meaning of the officials' response was that, by leaving the third generation Actros on the assembly line, they plan to fill the niche of the Axor model, which has already been discontinued. Nevertheless, in 2012, Antos appeared under the factory designation typ 963-0-C.
Judging by the official releases, it is destined for a completely different role than the budget version of the fourth generation “big brother”. And the “older” Actros is quite self-sufficient: there are just under a dozen cabins alone, and the range of power units is also, in general, not poor...
And here’s what the creators themselves say about the new model: “Mercedes-Benz Antos is the first truck designed specifically for heavy distribution work. Two versions of Antos - Volumer or Loader - are designed specifically to achieve record performance in terms of loading volume and lifting capacity. Diverse terrain and load require different engine power, and a large number of stops during distribution work means ease of disembarkation and embarkation. The Mercedes-Benz Antos satisfies all these requirements perfectly.” I was offered to verify this on German roads one rainy October day.
Options and Variations
Mercedes-Benz Antos is produced as a chassis with various wheel configurations and as a long-haul tractor. Gross weight is 18–26 tons. In many respects the car is unified with the 4th generation Actros. There are two main versions of the cabin - 2.3 m wide - “S” and “M”. Additionally, a cabin with a low roof can be supplied for transporting a car or placing a refrigeration unit on a van above it. A folding bed is an additional option. Its size is 2x0.6 m. The choice of power units is quite varied. Three engines OM936, OM470, OM471 with working volumes of 7.7 liters, respectively; 10.7 liters and 12.8 liters cover the range from 238 to 510 hp. Emission standards are Euro 6. Transmission is a robotic 8- or 12-speed Power Shift 3 gearbox. I will add that during my races I had no complaints about the operation of the engines and gearbox.
Antos wheel formulas can be 4x2, 6x2/2 and 6x4. There are also a sufficient number of wheelbase options: from 2650 to 4000 mm for the tractor, from 3700 to 6700 mm for the chassis.
Cargoautoinfo. Freight transport in detail.
Of course, it simply couldn’t be any other way. During the entire four hours allotted for photography and a test drive of the main new product of the year in the Mercedes-Benz line, it was cold autumn rain in the vicinity of Dusseldorf, sometimes turning into downpour. It’s a shame, because, according to the developers of the MV Antos, this is a completely new class of trucks.
We move in hasty dashes from the bus to the test car parking lot, trying to take a couple of shots as we go. But when we find ourselves in the cockpit, the camera has to be wiped with a napkin for a long time and thoroughly. True, we didn’t miss anything special - the fact is that the Antos can only be identified from the outside by its lighting technology; in all other respects it is no different from the fourth generation MV Actros.
If you don't know, I'll explain. At last year's presentation of the Mercedes-Benz Actros, it was announced that it would replace two models at once: Actros and Axor, for which it was originally supposed to have two cabins: “wide” (2.5 m) and “narrow” (2.3 m). So Antos just got the narrow version of the cabin. Which is not surprising, given that Mercedes spent about 1 billion euros on the development of the flagship model.
Launching a new cabin into production under these conditions is the height of wastefulness. And no matter what they say about the development of intracity transportation, medium-duty trucks are much less popular all over the world than heavy long-haul tractors and full-size dump trucks. Then why? And the “crossover virus” has reached the world of trucks, and marketers are trying to invent new niches and predict the popularity of cars at the intersection of classes. Moreover, the crisis in Europe is felt more acutely than ever, and most manufacturers are forced to reduce production.
To the direct question: “Will Antos become the successor to Axor?” - we were assured that this is a completely separate species - a heavy delivery truck. But excuse me, the Atego remains in the Mercedes lineup, and next year they promise a radical update. So what is the Antos revolution?
Namely, Daimler AG now has a car in Atego dimensions, capable of carrying cargo, like an Actros. Naturally, most of these vehicles will exist in the guise of the usual light-tonnage vehicles, but, as they say, options are possible, up to truck tractors with a gross weight of 40 tons. And this is also justified, after all, the distances in Europe are not that great, it’s difficult to compare with ours.
First look
The first look, for obvious reasons, came from the inside. What do we have here? You have to climb into the cabin using three steps. The developers took care of drivers working on a short shoulder. You get used to jumping back and forth without problems.
The first thing that catches your eye is the same instrument panel as the Actros - two wells with the main instruments, and between them an on-board computer display. At the same time, the computer operates in five languages, but depending on the wishes of the customer, you can choose from 52 languages, including Russian, Armenian and Turkmen!
The multifunctional steering wheel is adjustable in two planes over a fairly large range. From the point of view of the Russian driver, it is overloaded with functions, but this, I think, is a matter of habit. Perhaps the most comfortable, although German-hard, seats in the class. I managed to count 13 adjustments.
Great news for those who were not satisfied with the Mercedes-style traditionally overloaded left steering column lever. Now the right one is also overloaded - it controls the automated gearbox (both in automatic and manual mode) and controls the retarder.
The third-generation automated PowerShift gearbox is included as standard. There is no gearshift lever, all functions are located on the right steering column switch
The instruments are perfectly readable at any time of the day, but the combination, like that of a passenger car, is unusual. The on-board computer display, just like on the Actros, can speak Russian
The navigation works correctly, but it doesn’t speak Russian yet, although it’s possible that, having gotten confused in the settings, we still haven’t found the key to it
Mercedes inline sixes: 7.7 liters (238-354 hp), 10.7 liters (326-428 hp) and 12.8 liters (420-510 hp) meet Euro emissions requirements -6, but extremely demanding on fuel quality
Under the cabin there are new Mercedes inline sixes, two completely new engines with a displacement of 7.7 liters (238-354 hp) and 10.7 liters (326-428 hp), plus the already known Actros 12.8 -liter turbodiesel with power from 420 to 510 hp.
But then there’s a hitch, with the transition to in-line sixes, Mercedes has firmly established itself in the field of environmental friendliness, and all its engines comply with Euro-6 emission standards, which automatically closes their path to Russia. The fact is that to achieve such high performance, Mercedes simultaneously use SCR (injection of synthetic AdBlue urea into the exhaust tract) and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) technologies, and engines with exhaust gas recirculation are extremely demanding on fuel quality and will not last long on our high-sulfur diesel fuel. stretched out. However, for countries with normal fuel there is good news - the maintenance costs and fuel consumption of new cars are no different from their counterparts with Euro-5 engines.
The gearbox is the third generation automated PowerShift. The skill of the average driver in Europe is falling; this profession has been considered not the most prestigious for ten years. And taking into account the wishes of carriers, Daimler, starting with the third generation of Actros, installs automated gearboxes as standard, and manual gearboxes are available as an option.
And we'll go north
First we turn on the wipers. We start the engine, set the wheel on the right steering column lever to the Drive position, release the handbrake... Let's go.
Test routes were laid in Düsseldorf and its surroundings. Narrow paths, intersections with 90-degree turns, excellent quality asphalt...
It remains to complain that upbringing does not allow one to ask the talkative instructor to shut up, talking about the car, the surrounding area, asking about Russia, telling stories, in general, a very sociable guy, sincerely confident that he must make a favorable impression on a journalist from a wild country. By the way, he was sincerely surprised that I did not have my own property and yacht.
The two-axle 18-ton version with a 300-horsepower engine did not cause any complaints. Everything is simple and predictable - Antos handles great in European city traffic. By the way, unlike Actros, noise and vibration loads are much lower here. There are no problems with visibility, so on completely unknown roads you don’t wonder “how to get through this turn or that junction.”
It seemed to us that three-axle models do not handle as well as two-axle versions
The weight of the adult road train is 40 tons, and the dimensions are those of a delivery truck. The crossover virus has reached the world of trucks
The automated gearbox behaves very correctly, changing gears in a timely manner and, thanks to the slope sensor, is in no hurry to switch to higher gears on an ascent. I'm not sure I know many drivers who can shift more competently in manual mode.
The engine brake at speeds below 2000 rpm raised several questions - it is ineffective, and you have to use the service brakes.
But on a three-axle 26-tonne truck with a 6x2 wheel arrangement, it seems that you have to “catch” the car all the time. It would seem that a longer wheelbase predictably makes cornering more stressful (this is understandable and justified), but it should also provide more stabilization on a straight line. However, not everything is smooth here - you have to constantly taxi.
This means there remains a control check - a truck tractor with a “barrel” with a total weight of 40 tons and an engine with a power of 420 hp. Let's go. Everything is clear and simple. Yes, because of the semi-trailer, you have to make more turns, and the narrow streets are obviously more crowded, but... all road trains are guilty of this, but on the straight line there are no questions - you drive and don’t think that there’s a semi-trailer behind you.
So, not everything is correct with the fine-tuning of the controllability of the three-axle version? I would not mention this, because it is quite possible that this is a defect of one specific machine, but communication with colleagues confirmed the unpleasant impression. Moreover, my colleagues were riding on a different triaxle.
When to expect?
And finally, about the sad thing - these cars will not reach Russia soon. We don't have normal fuel. It was not even provided for in the technical regulations adopted with such difficulty 1.5 years ago. And the place of Antos on our roads will most likely be taken by KAMAZ with a cab from Axor. It's not bad, but it's a shame to feel like a third world country. After all, our guys have to work in conditions that Europeans never dreamed of.
How is it going with Shevchuk?
When it rains, When the light of cars passing by is in your eyes, And no one is there...
Antos, Anton, Antoine...
The design of the new model repeats the features of the older Aktros. However, chopped angular shapes and the triumph of computer graphics, somewhat controversial on the exterior, create a comfortable and impressive environment inside the car. But once you're in the driver's seat, you understand without a doubt that this is not a long-range truck. Instead of a “sleeping bag” there is a modest shelf for personal luggage, and in some versions of the cabin there is no space at all behind the seats and an additional third seat can be installed. The overall dimensions of the cabin are still inferior to the Aktros - this difference is visible even without measurements from the protruding front wheel arches. Well, let’s now see the “new class of trucks for heavy distribution work” in motion (quote from the official press release).
The concept of this new model assumes ease of operation and efficiency in a “ragged” operating mode: with frequent stops, boarding and disembarking of personnel, loading and unloading operations, and the environment should not be seriously affected. To solve this problem, the Antos complex will need a fairly powerful and modern engine. The test truck I received was equipped with a 394 hp OM470. at 1800 rpm. An automated 12-speed Power Shift 3 gearbox was “docked” to it. The algorithm of use and the location of the controls were familiar to me from the 4th generation Actros, tested a year ago, so it didn’t take me a long time to get comfortable behind the wheel, which can’t be said about the driving route and weather conditions, carefully “prepared” by the German host. Under the pouring autumn rain, several route options had to be overcome, the length of each was about 50 km, but the traffic conditions covered all possible scenarios for using a truck: from the narrow streets of an old European city to a section of a mountain road. Having driven through all possible options, I’m just ready to take my hat off - I’ve never had the opportunity to drive a truck with such refined, precise handling before. This is undoubtedly the main advantage of Antos. But the average fuel consumption, to put it mildly, seemed a bit high - from 36 to 39 l/100 km. And this is on a single vehicle, however, with a total weight of 25 tons and without a lack of traction.
It's time to start the engine
After starting a diesel engine with a power of 300 horsepower, only pleasant sensations remain. The car starts using the "Start" button. The motor responded quickly and quickly, the display immediately showed readiness for work. We set the lever to position “D”, which means “drive”, remove the handbrake and slowly roll forward. To say that the car is a pleasure to drive is an understatement. The smart transmission pleases with its well-coordinated gear shifting; moreover, we are not sure that even an experienced driver will be able to correctly calculate the desired gear when operating manually.
Photo source: pridoroge.blogspot.ruStart button - like in science fiction films
Our route runs along ordinary city streets. At first it was scary to drive onto a busy street, but the car showed itself on the positive side. We took turns accurately, despite our size. Once again I would like to remind you about good visibility. To drive and park in tight spaces, we used what we call a “creep,” which allowed us to control the car with just the brake pedal. In the city we used 25 l/100 km.
Photo source: pridoroge.blogspot.ruMercedes-Benz Antos with refrigerated body
We go out onto the highway and set the “economy” mode on the lever. The truck easily accelerates to 90 km/h. On the track, the Mercedes-Benz Antos feels like a fish in water, there are no complaints. To overtake on the highway I had to change the mode to “power”. The good news is that there is less vibration and noise compared to the Actros. The combination of (compact) engines with multi-stage gearboxes has made it possible to reduce power consumption for heavily loaded vehicles that have drive mechanisms. And this optimizes the payload. Another plus of Antos. There were no complaints about the brakes either.
Volumer or Loader
Antos modifications are an example of a vehicle designed to perform priority tasks of transporting bulk or heavy cargo.
Antos Loader is the first truck tractor for road trains weighing up to 40 tons, with a tare weight of about 6 tons - and this is with an engine that complies with Euro 6 toxicity standards. Such weight indicators are achieved due to aluminum parts, weight-optimized windshields and floor coverings, and a battery with reduced capacity, combined fuel tank and urea and due to a large number of other measures.
The advantages of Antos Volumer include a lower (80 mm) loading side compared to previous models. In addition, buyers can choose the size of the fuel tank - depending on whether the emphasis is on payload or mileage.
Visibility without comments
German monolith
Of the few shortcomings that I would like to highlight against a generally favorable background, the gigantic left steering column switch comes first. Based on new international trends in the automotive industry, it was assigned a huge number of functions, in addition to the inclusion of direction indicators. So now a whole “oar” has settled under the driver’s left hand, which, alas, is not always convenient. The second complaint is about the retarder. I discovered it during testing of the new “Aktros”, it was also preserved in the “Antoshka” - effective deceleration is only possible not lower than the third stage, and the operation occurs with a delay. Third complaint: the display constantly “loads” the driver with all kinds of pop-up information messages. Sometimes his fussiness begins to bother me, but perhaps this drawback belongs to the group of switchable functions in the on-board computer menu - I admit, I didn’t have enough time to deal with it in detail...
What I want to praise separately and repeatedly is a certain solidity and strength of the car, the feeling of which comes literally from the first kilometers. Excellent visibility, stability and controllability only enhance this impression. And the Germans themselves, smiling, say that this is largely due to the innovative design of a very durable frame...

Some features of the heart
The new generation of OM936 engines is equipped with the world's first exhaust camshaft with variable valve timing. The common rail injection system operates at a maximum pressure of 2400 bar. The engine is optimal in weight, has good specific power indicators, and to comply with the Euro 6 emissions standard, an exhaust gas recirculation system, an oxidation catalyst, and a particulate filter are used. The oil change interval is 120,000 km.

Slightly ajar intrigue
The previous lines were like the impressions of a journalist, a driver and a bit of an automotive test engineer. Now I’ll try to look at Antoshka through the eyes of a business owner. I won’t even discuss the fact that this truck is expensive for the average Russian carrier. The buyer of such equipment is not at all the average, and if this car were delivered to Russia, it would certainly find its owner. Not rich enough to buy cheap things. Indeed, if I have to carry heavy loads in harsh conditions, this is my choice. But everything is crossed out by the notorious European eco-standards of the 6th generation: one refueling with low-quality fuel - and the brainchild of high technology is immobilized. That is why the Antoshkas are not in a hurry to come here, where they would undoubtedly be useful and loved.
Initially, the official position of the importer was that deliveries of MB Antos were possible no earlier than the availability of diesel fuel in Russia that complies with the Euro 6 standard, but, according to the latest data, it is possible that there will be another decision, which has not yet been made or is being kept secret. I can only assume that for the Russian market there will probably be a Euro 5 modification. If this is true, then some carriers will have a chance to purchase a durable and reliable truck...
