Combine harvesters Torum: features, technical specifications

The design, production and sale of modern equipment for working in the field is the main focus of the Rostselmash Group of Companies (GC). Most recently, in July 2022, at an agricultural exhibition (Lennoblast), visitors were presented with a unique combine harvester for high-performance grain harvesting. The new product is called “TORUM 785”.

Features and design of Torum combines

The series of these units is represented by several models, the most efficient and powerful among which is the Torum 780. Excellent performance indicators are ensured by the innovative ARS threshing system, which includes a rotary header with a rotating deck, a continuously variable drive and a beater chamber located at an angle.

Also among the advantages of the series, the following qualities of Torum units stand out:

  • different power, depending on the model, which allows you to select the unit based on the upcoming operating conditions;
  • the ability to convert the chassis to all-wheel drive or tracked propulsion;
  • the cabin of the units is modern, comfortable, double;
  • quick change of headers is ensured by the presence of a unified hydraulic connector;
  • the ability to use different types of headers allows you to use Torum for harvesting a wide variety of crops (from cereals to rapeseed);
  • the movement and operation of the unit is controlled by the same manipulator.

There are no particular differences in the design of Torum combines depending on the model. The header on all units is installed at the front, there is a hydraulic drive and a terrain repetition system. The cut crop goes into the beater chamber, then into the rotary drum. After passing through a complex system of purification from foreign particles, the grain enters the bunker. The straw is chopped and removed separately.

The main differences between the models lie in the power of the power plant. Let's look at the most popular models of Torum combines using specific examples.

Device

The new Russian Torum combine harvester is a class 7 rotary grain harvester. The designers claim that the productivity is about 40 t/h; and depending on the landscape and type of crop, the machine can process over 2 thousand hectares per season. The versatility lies in the fact that the equipment copes with harvesting various grains and agricultural crops (wheat, rye, oilseeds, soybeans, rice, etc.) without losses or downtime.

Advantages and disadvantages

Since the start of production, the manufacturer has expanded the model line of Torum grain harvesting equipment. Over the same few years, the advantages and disadvantages of technology have become clear.

The defining advantage of the machine is its high productivity. In addition to the grain harvesting speed stated by the manufacturer (40 t/h), the bunker unloading rate is important: Torum spends 2 minutes unloading a filled bunker (more than 10,000 l).

The large volume of the bunker allows you to work without frequent stops in the field for unloading; The combine is equipped with an extended unloading auger.

Among the advantages that are characteristic of all models and allow them to compete in the global market are:

  • the ability to equip with a half-track undercarriage for working in problem and congested areas;
  • the use of power plants with different power ratings;
  • availability of a 2-seat luxury cabin;
  • the use of different types of headers (according to the type of crop), changing them is simple;
  • innovative threshing system Advanced System Rotor (the rotor deck rotates, energy consumption is reduced by 10%).

Users have virtually no complaints about the design of the machine. The list of shortcomings due to its short service life comes down to only the high cost compared to other rotary combines.

Combine harvester (Torum)

Designed for harvesting a wide range of crops in fields with high yields and complex agricultural conditions.

Torum is a high-performance rotary grain harvester with high efficiency, unpretentiousness, ease of maintenance, and reliability. This powerful machine is capable of harvesting over 2000 hectares of various crops in one season, threshing from 40 tons of grain per hour, i.e. over 300 tons per eight-hour shift.

The Torum combine is designed for harvesting traditional grain and cereal crops using direct and separate combining. The range of harvested crops ranges from wheat to rice. A high-performance combine with a rotary threshing scheme is well suited for farms with large acreage and high yields.

In addition to high productivity and efficiency, Torum combines are distinguished by their ability to work effectively on clogged and wet backgrounds. This is due to the use of a unique Advanced Rotor System (ARS) threshing system in the design of the technological path, which includes three innovative solutions: a beater feeder, a rotor with a rotating deck and three threshing points, and a stepless rotor drive.

  1. The tilting beater chamber provides higher throughput and lower power consumption thanks to Feed & Boots technology;
  2. A three-thread rotor allows threshing at three points, and a rotating self-cleaning deck allows you to work on wet backgrounds;
  3. The continuously variable rotor drive guarantees fast and precise adjustment of the thresher.

Feeder: Feed & Boost.

Feeder beaters level and accelerate the compressed mass before entering the rotor. The implementation of the “Feed & Boost” principle ensures the stability of the technological process and reduces the energy consumption of the unit. The advantages of the camera are especially pronounced when working on uneven windrows or when there is high humidity and contamination of the crop.

Practice has shown that, compared to traditional slatted conveyors, such a scheme increases the throughput of the feeder chamber by 20%, while energy consumption is reduced by 15%.

For convenience and to reduce the time for connecting adapters, all Torum combine harvesters are equipped with a single hydraulic connector, the quick-release connection of which is designed in such a way that prevents contaminants from entering the hydraulic system.

Stepless rotor speed control. The rotor is driven through a planetary variator and controlled by a hydraulic motor, which ensures precise and smooth adjustment of the rotor speed over the entire operating range.

Threshing device - ARS.

The Advanced Rotor System is a unique threshing system that has no analogues, which provides a significant increase in the productivity of the rotary combine, especially when harvesting in difficult conditions.

The problem common to all rotary combines - clogging the thresher with wet mass - is not an obstacle for Torum, thanks to the ARS threshing system: a beater feeder chamber that levels and accelerates the mass before feeding it to the rotor, a rotating rotor deck that eliminates the presence of a “dead zone”, and a stepless drive rotor, thanks to which the operator can set any rotation speed ranging from 250 to 1000 rpm and achieve optimal threshing.

A rotating deck has two undeniable advantages over a traditional stationary one. Firstly, it provides a large threshing area, which allows you to use the full potential of the rotary threshing device and increase its productivity. Secondly, it makes it possible to work on wet or clogged bread and rice by preventing the formation of stagnant (dead) zones, freezing of the mass and clogging of the rotor, as well as the ability of the deck to self-clean. In addition, the energy consumption of the threshing process is reduced by 8-10%.

Unique 3-point threshing system. The deck has three threshing sections, which allow you to set the threshing gap in one section. Thanks to this, the mass is threshed three times during one rotation of the rotor - in contrast to one-time threshing in traditional rotary MSUs. The same principle allows you to set larger threshing gaps.

For any grain, from barley to wheat, the threshing gap is set within 16-20 mm. No additional adjustment is required when working in any conditions.

Cleaning system.

Additional cascade. Torum uses a two-stage cleaning system. An additional blown cascade is created by another sieve. The system is perfectly balanced: the shaking board and the lower sieve move in one direction, and the massive part of the upper sieve moves in antiphase. As a result of the increase, the total cleaning area is 5.2 square meters.

A two-section powerful fan creates a uniform air flow, with air flowing not only from the ends, but also from the middle. The hydraulic fan drive provides smooth adjustment over a wide range, which is especially important when working with small-seeded crops and removing light waste.

A thoughtful approach to the non-grain portion.

Torum also demonstrates versatility when working with the non-grain part of the crop. It cuts really finely and scatters the crushed mass across the width of the header, ensuring thorough distribution of the mass across the field, which means fertilizing the soil and creating conditions for a good harvest. The device spreads straw along with chaff without using a separate chaff spreader.

  • 2 operating modes (rolling/crushing);
  • integrated chaff spreader;
  • adjusting the straw spreading width from the cab;
  • possibility of reducing the speed of the chopping drum (3400–1600 rpm).

Bunker.

The combine's grain tank with a capacity of 10,500 liters (12,000 liters for the Torum 780) is completely emptied at a speed of 105 l/s in less than 2 minutes, which makes the machine more efficient by reducing the number of cycles and unloading time.

The length of the unloading auger is increased to 5.7 m (6.8 m for Torum 780), the unloading height is 5.2 m (5.4 m for Torum 780), and the take-out angle is 105 degrees. These parameters make it possible to unload grain into any machine, even when the combine is mounted with an 11-meter header, on the move. And when harvesting rice, you can reload without leaving the check.

To save fuel when unloading, the thresher drive can be turned off.

Engines and transmission.

The Torum 780 and Torum 750 combines are equipped with economical OM 460 LA MTU (Mercedes) engines of Stage IIIa environmental standard with a power of 506 and 425 hp. respectively. The Torum 740 was equipped with a powerful V-shaped engine with a YaMZ-7512 turbocharger producing 400 hp.

An optimized rotary MSU requires fewer resources than a traditional one, that is, it reduces fuel consumption. When work is needed at full capacity, the engine will simply release hidden reserves.

The power flow is transmitted to the drive of the rotor, working parts and chassis through a power take-off gearbox along the shortest path, which allows minimizing energy losses. The transmission used with the motor unit, consisting of a dual-range manual transmission with electrical control and a planetary gear with a hydraulic motor for varying the rotor speed, makes it possible to steplessly and smoothly regulate and coordinate the speed of the machine, front equipment and MSU depending on the state of the field, thereby optimizing the load of the working path cars. The coordinated operation of all nodes is the hallmark of ARS.

The air compressor included in the basic package of the Torum combine saves a lot of time on shift maintenance and makes it possible to carry it out in the field in the absence of a technical support vehicle.

The chassis is designed taking into account all the requirements that cleaning sometimes imposes in difficult conditions. Increased ground clearance and a small turning radius allow the combine to easily maneuver in the field or when traveling on public roads. In addition to wheel drive and mono-drive, it is possible to install all-wheel drive and half-track on the Torum.

Cabin.

The two-seat, sprung, sealed Comfort Cab II cabin with panoramic glazing and enhanced sound insulation meets the latest ergonomic requirements. The standard equipment includes a climate system, a cooling chamber, and an audio preparation system, which ensures comfortable working conditions for the operator.

Good visibility is achieved thanks to the large glazing area and panoramic glass shape. In addition, tinted windows and a sunshade provide good visibility when working in bright sun, and 14 bright halogen headlights ensure effective work at night.

Automation greatly facilitates the operator’s work. Torum is equipped with the Adviser information system.

The system will suggest the optimal adjustments for effective cleaning, indicate operational errors and malfunctions and help eliminate them. In Torum, the information system has preset rotor speed and cleaning fan speeds for 14 crops, as well as the ability to remember user settings. The system for synchronizing the rotation speed of the reel and the movement of the combine reduces losses and eliminates errors during harvesting.

Adapters.

Universal header Power Stream. Such productive combines require appropriate front equipment. Everyone knows: harvesting begins with the header, so choosing the right solution is the most important aspect when choosing a combine harvester.

Corn. To harvest corn for grain, the combine is combined with 8- or 12-row headers, which are guaranteed to provide a productivity of up to 6 ha/h. It is worth noting that in this case it is necessary to replace the rotor deck grilles with special “corn” ones. When harvesting corn, the leafy mass is crushed and scattered across the field using a chopper-spreader.

Rape. For maximum efficiency when harvesting easily damaged crops, additional equipment is offered. The rapeseed attachment for 6/7/9 m headers will reduce mowing losses by 3-4 times and additionally collect, depending on the yield, 30-100 kg of grain from 1 hectare of crops.

Sunflower. 8- and 12-row headers specially designed for sunflower harvesting will ensure a harvest completeness of at least 98%, which is unattainable when using other types of devices. The headers work reliably on any crop varieties, including low-growing sunflower hybrids.

Rice. Torum is a leader in rice harvesting. The ARS rotary system, designed to work on this difficult crop, is only complemented by elements from the “rice” kit. To work in “wet” checks, instead of wheels, half-tracks are installed on the strong front axle, and the rear steered wheels are equipped with a drive. High-quality cutting of tangled and hard rice stems is ensured by a header with a fingerless double cutting device and a special visor on the table.

Soy. Reapers with a working width of 7 and 9 m with a flexible cutting device that can effectively copy the microrelief of the soil can significantly reduce losses when harvesting soybeans and other creeping crops. In addition, the headers are also used for harvesting traditional upright crops, for which the possibility of fixing the knife is provided.

Small seed crops. When harvesting the seeds of legumes and cereal grasses, you can significantly reduce seed loss and increase their purity if you equip the combine with a special device (“punching” sieves, deck cover, etc.).

Thin, low-growing breads. For harvesting sparse, low-growing grains, the grain conveyor (draper) header Draper Stream 900 with a working width of 9 m is indispensable. When used, an increase in harvesting speed of 10-15% is achieved, which allows optimizing the loading of the thresher. Special wheels that perform the functions of following the field topography and supporting the header can also be moved to the transport position, which eliminates the need to use a transport cart.

Picker. When harvesting separately, combines are equipped with a pickup platform 3.4 or 4.3 m wide. Like the header, the pickup is capable of following the field topography in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Reliable protection of the device elements from clogging, winding and blowing away of the mass by the wind ensures its stable operation even in unfavorable conditions.
