KamAZ 53228 is a large-capacity chassis with 3 axles (6 by 6 wheel arrangement). Externally, the model does not stand out from other products of the Kama Automobile Plant and has a classic design. Depending on the type of equipment used, the equipment can be used for various business purposes, including long-distance transportation. Individual features and a driven front axle allow the vehicle to be used in places where other vehicles are unable to operate. In terms of relative power and cross-country ability, no other vehicle can compete with the model.

KamAZ 53228 was created in 1989 by specialists from the automobile plant located in Naberezhnye Chelny. The chassis was originally intended for tanker trucks (a joint Anglo-Soviet venture that appeared in 1989). This company produced specialized equipment and armored vehicles.

KamAZ 53228 appeared on the market only in the early 1990s. In 1993-1994, the model was available exclusively in a flatbed format. Since 1995, KamAZ 53228 was produced only as a chassis. The model was offered in this format until 2009.

Story

The model was developed in 1989. Initially it was designed for tanker trucks produced by (a joint Soviet-British company created in 1989 and specializing in the production of special equipment and armored vehicles).

KamAZ 53228 entered the market at the beginning. 1990s In 93-94. the model was produced only as an onboard vehicle, and from 1995 to 2009 - exclusively as a chassis.

Price

Despite the fact that mass production of this truck has been discontinued, it is now still possible to purchase models with zero mileage. The cost of such trucks varies from 2.7 million to 2.9 million rubles for a universal chassis.

On the secondary market, for versions released between 2005 and 2007, they often ask from 950 thousand to 1.2 million rubles. More recent copies, produced in 2011-2013, will cost in the range from 1.35 million to 1.8 million rubles. If we consider models from the late 1990s and early 2000s, they can be purchased at prices ranging from 370 thousand to 750 thousand.

The main factors influencing the price tag of a used car are: year of manufacture, type of installed equipment/add-on, as well as technical condition, and mileage.

Thanks to the individual features and the driven front axle, it is possible to use this car where other cars cannot be used. The cross-country ability and relative power of this model exceed these characteristics of all other models of similar equipment.

Technical characteristics of the KamAZ 53228 log truck include a 6 by 6 chassis wheel arrangement and high cross-country ability. Thanks to reinforced side members and a steel frame, the model can withstand high loads.

There are leaf spring suspensions at the front and rear. The front suspension is equipped with leaf springs with hydraulic shock absorbers. The rear suspension has a balancer design.

The elements of its equipment are semi-elliptical springs and reaction rods with movable joints. The chassis is equipped with wheels, the tires of which have a road pattern. The rear axles have dual wheels.

Purpose

The KamAZ-53228 truck is designed for transporting various types of cargo on roads of all categories. This model is mainly used in places that are difficult to reach for other equipment.

In order to expand the scope of application, the Kama Automobile Plant produced a universal chassis, which was later modified to suit the characteristics of the chosen area.

Dump trucks specialized in transporting bulk cargo. Truck cranes load, unload and move any cargo around the work site. Concrete mixers deliver liquid construction materials. All these modifications were in great demand in the construction and road repair services.

Crane installations only expanded the range of tasks of a standard flatbed truck, since thanks to such equipment, loading and unloading does not require the use of other equipment.

Shift buses are designed to transport passengers, and tank trucks are designed to transport various liquids.

In addition to this, there are other types of superstructures that allowed the KamAZ-53228 truck to cover as many areas as possible.

Device

The chassis is based on a steel frame consisting of stamped elements. The side members have a variable cross-section along their length, which provides strength and reduces the weight of the vehicle. A KamAZ-740-31 V-shaped turbodiesel is installed on the front part of the frame. The supercharging circuit includes 2 superchargers, each of which serves its own bank of cylinders. Later versions of the machine are equipped with a 740-662 engine, which is distinguished by the installation of a radiator for cooling the compressed air.

The 6x6 all-terrain vehicle is equipped with a 10-speed synchronized gearbox. The box housing is rigidly connected to the engine cylinder block through the clutch housing. The coupling consists of 2 dry friction discs, the disconnection is carried out by a hydraulic drive. The clutch control circuit has a pneumatic booster.

When installing a hydraulic manipulator, a special power take-off gearbox is mounted on the side of the gearbox, which serves to drive the pumping station. The machine uses a hydraulic distributor with spool-type valves, which is necessary to control the loading device. The KamAZ 53228 log carrier, used as a timber carrier, has a similar design.

The transmission is complemented by a 2-speed transfer gearbox that distributes torque between the front axle and the rear bogie. Versions with a sleeping place are produced by the factory according to a separate customer request. The cabins are equipped with separate seats for the driver and passenger.

Each modification of KamAZ 53228 is equipped with a V-shaped diesel engine, in which the air is cooled at an intermediate stage and has a turbocharger. Service intervals have been increased for it (the oil will need to be changed every 16,000 km).

  • I have a three-axle large-capacity Kamaz 53228 truck with a 6x6 wheel arrangement, capable of driving where conventional special equipment cannot go. Once you take a look at the impressive ground clearance, everything becomes clear. I have a flatbed version with a load capacity of 16 tons, and the tire dimensions are 300 R508. The 240-horsepower 740-horsepower diesel engine is well-studied and time-tested. It can be overhauled and repaired ad infinitum - largely due to the availability of spare parts. The 11-liter diesel engine is very gluttonous and prone to oil burns, but its reliability leaves no doubt. In the combined cycle I use 40 liters, and the average diesel consumption reaches 35 liters per 100 km. The vehicle has proven itself from the best side - it is equipped with everything necessary for uninterrupted cargo transportation over long distances, as well as within the city. Despite the discomfort and minor breakdowns, Kamaz 53328 gives the impression of a finished product. We have already welded the frame several times and installed additional springs to increase the strength of the chassis. In addition, the wheels were replaced only once - more off-road tires were installed, with even greater ground clearance. But, however, the roll in corners has increased, and it has also become much noisier, vibrations and aerodynamic sounds have increased. The original cabin hasn't been replaced yet, but it's high time - corrosion is to blame. I'm tired of constantly repainting it. Timely maintenance will extend the life of this Kamaz for several more years.
  • My Kamaz 53228 with a 240-horsepower 11-liter diesel engine consumes from 30 to 40 liters, depending on the load. By today's standards, this is a shameful indicator, but the engine itself is good - strong and repairable, relatively inexpensive to maintain. I have a version with 210 and 350 liter fuel tanks, which provide a decent range. The 6x6 wheel arrangement allows you to overcome serious obstacles even under load. The car's chassis has reinforced side members and springs, although the frame had to be re-welded several times. The front suspension is equipped with leaf springs with hydraulic shock absorbers, but the rear suspension is balanced. However, this solution is easier to maintain, and not much worse than foreign analogues of that time. The cabin quickly rusts, and this defect cannot be completely eliminated - either repaint or change the cabin. The carrying capacity of 16 tons suits me, but with such a load the 240-horsepower diesel engine quickly turns sour and is not able to prove itself, for example, on long climbs. The long-travel accelerator pedal allows you to accurately dose the thrust regardless of the engine speed. So, if used correctly, this car can also provide driving pleasure.
  • I have a Kamaz 53228 with a 240-horsepower 11-liter diesel engine, working with a 10-speed manual transmission that smoothly changes gears, between which there are jerks and jerks only during extreme acceleration in an empty state. Under load, the car is in any case more comfortable than without a load - it shakes less and the vibration level is significantly lower. But the overclocking potential is a big problem, and the mediocre dynamics are a serious obstacle for my cargo tasks outside the city. Poor elasticity and high fuel consumption are the main disadvantages of the KamAZ 53228, which still needs to be able to be kept on a given trajectory. The suspension is stiff and at the same time long-travel, which is why you need to be careful and reduce speed to a minimum when cornering. In terms of sound insulation, the car is so “cardboard” that I wouldn’t be surprised if it one day falls apart like a house of cards. Although this happens gradually - something falls off, something leaks and rusts. This bucket does not need major repairs, because we simply sell this junk and buy another used truck, which, even with “patching holes,” copes with the assigned tasks.
  • I purchased KamAZ 53228 in 2022 on the secondary market. I got the car at full speed, but additional investments were required. Strengthening the springs and other chassis elements, installing new wheels (the tread of the old ones has already completely worn out), replacing the cabin with an updated one with improved sound insulation and a new front panel. In addition, over time, a pre-heater, auxiliary heater and air conditioning were installed. The main technical components are all intact and undamaged. The 10-speed manual gearbox is equipped with a range-shifter with a double divider. I have a version with a flatbed body with a carrying capacity of 16 tons. Due to the weak diesel engine, this model is more suitable for urban cargo transportation, but I have to travel outside the city, because I am a novice entrepreneur and I need as many orders as possible for “promotion”, because competitors are not asleep. You can also drive on light off-road conditions, fortunately the 6x6 wheel arrangement and all-wheel drive allow this. The presence of differential locks and downshifts also instills confidence in overcoming any obstacles. A rattling diesel engine, like a howling gearbox and transfer gearbox, cannot be quieted by any sound insulation. And yet, thanks to it, tire rolling and aerodynamic sounds have become less audible. It is necessary to regularly check the level of all fluids - in the brake system, axles, gearbox, engine and power steering, so that oil starvation does not occur. And if there is some serious malfunction, then go straight to the service center - there are plenty of spare parts there.

Cabin

Its installation location is the front part of the frame above the unit. There are different cab options available for this car: with a low or high roof, with or without a sleeping place. This expands the scope of application of the car.

There is a separate car seat in the cabin. The driver's side is equipped with several adjustments. There are heating and ventilation systems inside.
