Car history

Many consider the KamAZ 5490 truck tractor to be the flagship that won the annual competition “Best Commercial Vehicle of the Year in Russia.” He was also awarded the honorary title “Prospect of the Year.”

The leadership of Tatarstan called it a diamond. The model was created with the goal that it could replace the previous variation of the 5460 family. Therefore, the new vehicle could become a real technological find in the field of domestic trucks.

KamAZ-5490 began to have the necessary “qualities” of a European long-haul tractor, which allowed the company to begin to compete with many European manufacturing companies.

The new product was presented at the ComTrans-2011 exhibition. The development was carried out by the largest Russian manufacturing company KamAZ and Daimler Trucks. Back in 2007, an international tender was held to design a brand new cabin model for subsequent generations of trucks.

The South Korean manufacturing company DMEC, which is a subsidiary, won. The latter was able to develop the power unit and axle, and specialists from the Russian Federation were able to design a brand new cabin. The design required about $40,000,000.

The management of the Kama Automobile Plant plans to occupy about 1⁄4 of the Russian automobile market among long-haul tractors. In the meantime, their share is a little more than 5 percent. The update allowed us to get rid of many errors. If specialists found a problem, it was corrected immediately.

Specifications

Power unit

The new mainline tractor simply surprises with its technical component. The first thing I would like to note is a pair of brand new power units. You can choose from a basic 11.76-liter 4-stroke engine with 8 cylinders and running on KamAZ-740.75-440 diesel fuel.

It was equipped with a turbocharging system with intermediate air cooling. The engine produces about 440 horsepower and torque is 1,900 rpm. Experts plan that this power unit can meet Euro-4 environmental requirements and was available in the KamAZ 5490 DMEC modification.

A motor is also provided, which was developed by specialists from Germany. It is represented by a six-cylinder 4-stroke turbodiesel Mercedes-Benz OM 457LA. Despite the fact that it meets European environmental standards, the engine produces about 428 horses, so it simply cannot be called weak.

According to the manufacturers, its main advantage is cost-effectiveness. The engine has an injection system with a PLD fuel mechanism. The declared resource of the power unit is 1,200,000 kilometers, which is very impressive. The old engine continued to consume a lot of diesel fuel. The new product eliminated this problem. The 5490 tractor consumes about 33 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km.

Fuel consumption

Depending on the installed engine, KamAZ-5490 has a different fuel consumption rate. Modifications with a Mercedes power plant consume about 33 liters per 100 km. Versions with a domestic engine are more “gluttonous”. All of them are equipped with an 800-liter fuel tank, providing a large range of the truck.

Transmission

If we talk about the gearbox, the developers also provide for a couple of variations. Associated with the German engine is a 16-speed synchronized gear shifter AF 16S-2221. This variation is an excellent assistant for the driver of a long-range vehicle. It stands out due to the presence of a main hypoid gear, and it also has a remote control.

This parameter is very important. The box also has an intarder. The box is connected to the power unit using a single-plate diaphragm clutch ZF-Sachs MFZ-430. The Russian-made engine acquired a 12-speed unsynchronized gearbox ZF-AS-Tronic 12AS-2131. The maximum speed level of the 5490 model is 110 kilometers per hour.

Suspension

The domestic mainline tractor was designed on a two-axle frame base with a 2-cylinder air suspension. The car has rear drive wheels and comes with a Daimler HL6 hypoid drive axle (3.077 gear ratio), which has a differential lock. Also, the new KamAZ was equipped with air suspension. In front of the car there is a roll stabilizer and springs on the fingers.

By the way, the fingers need to be lubricated regularly, then they will even better maintain a smooth ride and a level of comfort when moving. A 2-cylinder air suspension system was installed at the rear. It is controlled using the ECAS system, which allows you to adjust the ride height. Wheel formula – 4x2.

Brake system

Absolutely all KamAZ-5490 wheels are equipped with disc brakes. On top of that, they have the addition of an electro-pneumatic EBS control drive and an ASR traction control system. We didn’t forget about installing the ESP stability control system.

Steering

The steering mechanism was developed by engineering staff from Germany, which was initially tested on trucks that took part in the Dakar rally. Despite the rather massive steering wheel, it is simple and easy to operate. Hydraulic power steering helps the driver in steering.

Supply system

To supply the engine with fuel, the design of the KAMAZ 5490 vehicle provides for the installation of two fuel tanks with a total volume of 800 liters. Two series-connected batteries with a capacity of 190 A/H and a voltage of 12 V, and an alternating current generator with a rated voltage of 28 V and a power of 2000 W are used as sources of electrical energy. Device

The model is built on the basis of a 2-axle frame platform with 2-bar air suspension. The car has rear-wheel drive and is equipped with a Daimler HL6 hypoid drive axle (gear ratio 3.077) with a differential lock.

The new KamAZ-5490 now has air suspension. At the front of the car there is a roll stabilizer and springs on the fingers. The latter require regular lubrication, but maintain smooth running and comfort on the road. At the rear there is a 2-barrel air suspension system.

It is controlled through the ECAS system, which regulates ground clearance. The truck has a four-by-two wheel arrangement and is equipped with a 16-speed synchronized “mechanics” model ZF16S2221, equipped with an intarder. It allows even a loaded tractor to pick up speed quite quickly. The transmission is connected to the engine through a single-plate diaphragm clutch ZF-Sachs MFZ-430. An optional 12-speed AS-Tronic automatic transmission is available.

Thanks to the use of rear and front electronically controlled disc brakes, greater safety on the road is achieved. The KamAZ-5490 is also equipped with an ASR traction control system, an ESP exchange rate stability system and a directional stability function. The steering mechanism, developed by Daimler specialists, was tested at the Paris-Dakar rally. Despite the large size, the steering wheel is very obedient.

The model is equipped with an all-metal cabin with an attractive appearance, an aerodynamic body kit and an electric tilt drive. The cabin in the tractor has been significantly improved. It has two small berths (0.685 and 0.7 m in width, 2 m in length) and a high roof, making the KamAZ-5490 excellent for interregional and international transport.

The cabin of the new model is based on a similar element from the Mercedes Axor tractor. However, the domestic version did not borrow all the components of the German “classmate”. It was modified specifically for KamAZ-5490, taking into account Russian realities.

The engineers of the Kama Automobile Plant also took care of the drivers. The truck's cabin now features a cruise control system, an adjustable steering column and comfortable seats from Isringhausen and Grammer. The picture was completed with electric windows, a stylish interior and air conditioning. In terms of comfort, KamAZ-5490 is not inferior to the latest models of famous brands. To store things in the cabin, there are special niches above the windshield.

The basic version of the truck is equipped with a 3-stage running board with anti-slip coating, LED fog lights, an autonomous cabin heater, two powerful batteries, a pre-filter, a pad wear sensor, audio preparation, daytime running lights, a pre-heater, an anti-glare instrument panel and power windows. Navigation is optionally available.

Appearance

Initially, as stated, it was planned that the design staff from Russia would make the cabin, and professionals from Germany (Daimler Trucks) would design the axle and power unit. We took the Mercedes Axor cabin as a basis, which was subject to some updating, thanks to which the headlights and turn signals began to look a little different.

But it would be wrong to say that Kama specialists stole another idea, because it is a fundamentally new development of their enterprise, into which they invested, as mentioned above, 40 million dollars. Workers from Russia managed to bring the idea to a logical conclusion and produce a cabin in accordance with the new chassis.

The modified cabin features a stylish design solution, and it is also quite streamlined, which, for obvious reasons, has improved the aerodynamic component of the Swedish truck. It would not be superfluous to mention that the appearance of the Russian car has changed more than once in recent years.

The engineering staff was able to eliminate a considerable number of shortcomings in the design component of the new car. If the slightly earlier assemblies looked like “European” models of the early 2000s, now the car can be called one of the most technologically advanced in Europe.

The designers decided to completely abandon the obsolete square headlights and rectangular body shapes. The car has undergone many changes in its appearance. For example, the headlights began to have a round shape, and the turn signals were placed separately.

From a practical point of view, the engineering specialists made the right decision, because during the deformation of one element of the optics there will be no need to replace the entire headlamp unit.

The bumper installed in front was not painted, so this process will not be so noticeable if it gets dirty and dusty. The step was installed as low as possible, so the driver and passenger will not need to literally jump into the cabin, as before.

They also didn’t forget about the presence of a streamlined spoiler skirt, which was not previously installed on all units of KamAZ vehicles. The radiator grille has a large company logo and looks great against the background of the front bumper and the cabin itself. At the very bottom, on the line of the steps, four foglights found their places, which were placed in separate niches.

The glass area of ​​the new product is quite large, which allows the driver to be aware of everything that is happening on the road section. The side part has neatly curved glass that extends to the rear spoilers.

If you believe the words of the drivers, fresh wheels and tires appeared. Russian tractors still received European wheels, which made it easier for trucking companies to buy and change tires.

Generally speaking, the new long-haul tractor began to look more modern. At least take its design - the developers were able to remove all the shortcomings. It would not be superfluous to mention that the front of the car is quite similar to the Italian Iveco Stralis, which was released in 2014.

Cabin interior

The main tractor with the index 5490 turned out to be almost a debut vehicle, which received a couple of cab variations at once. The first was handled and developed by Koreans from DMEC. But they produce it in modest quantities. The main cabin is a German variation, based on the fundamentally redesigned and modified cabin of the Axor truck from Mercedes.

However, this does not mean that the Russian cabin model is not unique. To the eye, it does not bear such a great resemblance to the image from Germany, but real KamAZ elements are immediately noticeable here. Frankly, only in appearance, but when you get into the cabin, it is noticeable that this is a fundamentally different and new car, atypical for the Kama plant neither in ergonomics, interior, layout, nor even in the level of comfort provided to the driver and passenger.

It’s enough to even quickly look at the interior of the KamAZ-5490 to understand that the cabin was actually made by German specialists - their focus on the driver’s comfort is difficult to confuse with anything.

Inside the KamAZ-5490, the level of comfort has been significantly improved, so that very few elements connect it with the previous KamAZ.

The cabin itself is more spacious. It reaches a height of 1.91 meters and allows the driver, if necessary, to stand up and straighten up to his full height. The seats were installed from the company Grammer and Isringhausen, which are quite comfortable and have a damping suspension with all the required settings. The steering column is also adjustable in different positions.

Moreover, the car is equipped with cruise control, and also introduced electric windows and air conditioning. And this is not a top-end package, but a standard one. A little earlier, KamAZ lovers didn’t even dream of something like this, but today the most necessary things are present in the cabin of the 5490 model.

The pleasant moments did not end there, in the KamAZ cabin - it was decided to install a couple of sleeping beds inside the main tractor. They may be small (being 2 meters long, their width is only 68.5 and 70 cm), but they provide an opportunity for both drivers to rest at once when parking in a parking lot.

There are plenty of different compartments to keep all kinds of driver's belongings safe. But special attention should be paid to the front panel, which is optimally arranged to provide the driver with convenient access to the necessary controls. The steering wheel now has a pair of buttons.

I was pleasantly pleased with the installation of armrests, which is very useful considering that trips can be very long. Near you you can find a pair of cup holders, a gear shift knob and a handbrake lever. The instrument panel received an anti-reflective coating. Basic equipment includes independent heating and an audio system.

As a separate option, buyers will be able to order air conditioning and a mini-fridge. They also plan to install a navigation system on the new product. Based on the words of experts, with the help of such equipment, the domestic truck managed to get a little closer to European cars, and they can be a good competitor to them.

The interior of the KamAZ-5490 cab is produced in two versions, the Asian version and the German one. Although the latter is more common, since the Asian interior is not produced in such large quantities.

At the COMTRANS 2013 exhibition, KAMAZ OJSC presented several new models of trucks with Mercedes-Benz Axor cabs. Of course, the KAMAZ-5490 truck tractor aroused considerable interest, and the start of its mass production was announced there. This spring we went to KAMAZ, where, among other things, we were able to get acquainted in more detail with both the serial tractor and other new products of the Kama auto giant.

It's no secret that until recently KAMAZ's product line lacked a modern long-haul tractor that could compete with famous European truck manufacturers, which are a dime a dozen on the Russian market today. Well, to be more precise, we are talking about the lack of a more modern and spacious cabin, because the existing one has been in production for almost 38 years, since the first KAMAZ-5320 truck rolled off the assembly line in 1976. Of course, over the years of production it was re-stalled more than once, but the frame remained the same. And if for delivery trucks and vehicles operating in the public sector, the cabin is quite suitable and does not constrain the driver, then for medium-haul and long-distance transportation it is outdated and no longer meets the growing requirements of carriers.

The space above the windshield is occupied by additional lockable storage compartments, as well as a radio and digital tachograph.

The plant also did not hide the need to replace the KAMAZ cab with a more spacious and comfortable one. It is long overdue. However, the process of creating a cabin, as they say, from scratch, is quite labor-intensive and very expensive, as a result, a long-term search for partners began. But, as you know, attempts to install new cabs from other manufacturers on KAMAZ trucks have been made repeatedly and, for various reasons, have not been successful. As a result, the cabin of the Mercedes-Benz Axor family was taken as a basis. For the first time, a prototype of the new highway truck with an Axor cab was shown at the Comtrans 2011 exhibition, but at the exhibition in 2013 several new products with a new cab were presented: a 4x2 truck tractor, a 6x4 tractor, a 6x4 onboard highway truck and an all-wheel drive dump truck. This spring, during a trip to KAMAZ, we were able to get acquainted with some new products in more detail.

Naturally, the greatest interest was aroused by the KAMAZ-5490 truck tractor, or, taking into account the new indexing system, KAMAZ M1842, which is deciphered as follows: M - mainline, 18 - gross weight, 42 - engine power in hp. pp., divided by 10. In addition, in the fall of 2013, serial production of KAMAZ-5490 began, for which the plant built a new workshop for welding and assembling cabins, and also modernized the main conveyor, on which, in fact, tractors are assembled in small batches .

One of the main distinguishing features of the KAMAZ-5490 is a comfortable cabin with a frame, as already noted, from Mercedes-Benz Axor. On the provided model, it has a high roof and two berths, its overall width is 2300 mm, however, as we know, the long-awaited full-size, 2500 mm wide, of our own design, will appear no earlier than 2016.

The appearance of the tractor is quite modern, and the lining of the front of the cab and the lower body kit are very original, and the streamlined shapes are designed to improve aerodynamic characteristics. The Hella dot head optics are still an intermediate option and will soon give way to the original block headlights, also Hella. The bumper has two steps with an anti-slip coating, and there are handrails under the windshield for easy maintenance. In the radiator lining, only part of the panel rises, which is not entirely convenient, and there is only one tool box on the left side, and even that one is small.

Driver's seat with Grammer air suspension

The wide-opening door allows you to easily enter the cabin. Convenient steel vertical handrails also attract attention. You can easily move around inside the cabin by standing up to your full height. The distance from floor to ceiling is 1910 mm, and the internal width is 2000 mm. Driver and passenger seat from Grammer with all necessary adjustments, air suspension. They are equipped with folding armrests. In general, the seats are very comfortable, you sit as if in a foreign car. The steering column with pneumatic clamp is adjustable for reach and tilt. Inside the cabin there is a well-known Mercedes interior. The finishing uses plastic of good quality and non-marking light gray color. To the right of the driver, at the bottom of the front panel, there is an abundance of open shelves and niches for all kinds of small things, and on top there are two deep cup holders. The high roof made it possible to place additional lockable storage compartments above the windshield, as well as a radio and digital tachograph. There is an electrically operated ventilation hatch in the center of the roof.

Behind the driver and passenger seats there are two sleeping places, which are quite comfortable and look good. The top shelf can be lifted and locked, just like in a train carriage. At the bottom headboard, on the driver's side, there is a control unit for lighting, pre-start liquid heater and sunroof drive. Also, under the lower bed there is a place for things, provisions, bed linen - in general, for everything you need during a long business trip.

The KAMAZ-5490 cab is mounted on a four-point air suspension with an electric drive for the tipping mechanism. Underneath it is installed an in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine Mercedes-Benz OM457LA with BlueTec technology, which meets Euro 5 environmental standards. With a working volume of 12 liters, it develops a power of 428 hp. With. at 1900 min-1 and maximum torque 2100 Nm at 1100 min-1. The car uses a 12-speed automated ZF AS-Tronic gearbox as a transmission.

The suspension on the tractor at the front is spring-type at the rear, pneumatic, with the ECAS control system, which not only ensures convenient loading or unloading due to the ability to change the position of the vehicle frame relative to the ground, but also ensures a highly smooth ride on uneven roads, as well as vehicle stability in corners. It is also worth noting that the rear axle uses a Daimler HL6 axle with a hypoid final drive, which was specially developed for long-haul tractors carrying out long-distance transportation.

The front and rear axles of the KAMAZ-5490 are equipped with disc brakes, and the EBS electronically controlled braking system makes it possible to shorten the braking distance of the road train and significantly reduce the degree of wear of the brake linings. In addition, the truck has a modern electronic stabilization program ESP.

During our acquaintance with the KAMAZ-5490, we were able to drive the flagship, and in conjunction with a three-axle semi-trailer. Having settled comfortably in the driver's seat, we start the engine, there are practically no vibrations on the controls. We turn the automatic transmission control joystick, which is located on the right steering column lever, to position D (option), and the road train begins to move smoothly, without jerking. The German diesel engine has enough torque and the car accelerates quite quickly. The high seating position and a full set of rear-view mirrors provide excellent visibility from the driver's seat. The effort on the controls is minimal, I also liked the steering wheel itself - very comfortable. The absence of the need to change gears allows you to fully concentrate on driving the road train. The Chelny flagship seems to be handling normally, but the feedback is not very clear, as plant representatives told us a little later. Yes, they say, there were problems, but now this defect has been eliminated on production models. Well, we willingly believe. Otherwise, there are no complaints, the instrument readings are perfectly readable, all controls are within easy reach, and the keys located on the front panel are at arm's length. It is also worth noting the presence of numerous systems designed to significantly make the driver’s life on the road easier. These are air conditioning, independent air heater, electric windows, electric and heated mirrors, cruise control, retarder and much more.

Of course, the Axor cabin is not the most modern example, compared to existing European brands, but if compared with the current KAMAZ cabin, the driver feels simply luxurious in it, and we can safely say that a giant step forward has been made here.

HYBRID KAMAZ

Natural journalistic insatiability forced us to pay attention to a seemingly inconspicuous three-axle truck tractor. At first, I just wanted to supplement the new KAMAZ model range with one more photo: just before this, a two-axle truck tractor was photographed, and a three-axle one wouldn’t hurt...

Imagine our surprise when we suddenly saw the units and components of a hybrid truck. No, we didn’t see anything new except the hybrid KAMAZ itself. Moreover, all of America is already simply flooded with heavy hybrids.

However, word by word, much more interesting details began to emerge. It turned out that in addition to the diesel hybrid, there is also a gas hybrid using cryogenic technology. The power unit is a Cummins engine. The diesel engine develops 380 hp, gas – 320 hp. The engines are combined with a ZF 12-speed robotic gearbox.

The two Dana live rear axles are supported by front-wheel drive. This is a plug-in drive from reversible electric machines through a planetary gearbox and constant velocity joints using reversible electric machines. Electric machine power 90 kW, maximum torque 250 Nm.

But that's not all. The rear axle suspension is pneumatic. It is also made pneumatic for the front axle. When we crawled under the car to see how the drive was made, it turned out that the front suspension was made independent. Previously, this had only been seen on Swedish Volvo trucks. KAMAZ 5490 is positioned as a replacement for the previous model KAMAZ 5460, as the flagship of the line.
