The vehicle, called KamAZ-65116 (6x4), is a truck from the updated series of the Kama plant. The new generation tractor appeared on sale relatively recently, but is already included in the list of the best domestic cars in the segment of heavy commercial vehicles.

The characteristics of KamAZ 65116 allow the truck to be used in road trains with a carrying capacity of up to 38 tons. To perform specific tasks, the vehicle can be equipped with various trailers and semi-trailers, as well as tipper and container equipment weighing up to thirty tons. On the platform itself it is allowed to place cargo in a volume of up to 72 cubic meters.

Modifications

Today the 65116 model range has several modifications. They differ slightly from the basic version. This applies to the power unit used and the load capacity of the machines.

  1. 65116-62. A modification coupled with a KAMAZ 740.62-280 engine and a ZF-9S1310 manual transmission. The engine (Euro-3) has increased power, and the gearbox has a number of improvements.
  2. 65116-A4. A machine with a 300-horsepower Cummins ISB6.7e4 diesel engine (Euro-4) and an integrated exhaust aftertreatment system.
  3. 65116-60-10. A car with a Cummins internal combustion engine with 300 horsepower, an engine preheater and a 2-disc diaphragm clutch. This equipment is equipped with a restyled cabin and an ABS system.

In order to improve performance according to the Euro standard, this car is equipped with an AdBlue exhaust gas neutralization system.
Its peculiarity is that a tank with a pump and pipelines leading to the automobile exhaust gas system is mounted in the car.

Injectors and a mixer are installed in front of the catalysts, through which urea is injected into the flow of hot exhaust gases.

Through special signaling devices, information about the operation of the system is transmitted to the driver, and if an emergency signal is received, he knows that the car cannot be operated if the laws of the area require compliance with the Euro 4 standard.

Otherwise, this truck tractor is similar to KamAZ-65116-n4. The power unit is a Cummins 6 ISBe4 300 engine. However, the performance is somewhat lower than that of its counterparts on vehicles without an exhaust gas aftertreatment system.

The car has inter-wheel and inter-axle blocking. BOSCH fuel injection pump and power take-off are installed. A ZF9 high-speed gearbox and an aerodynamic visor are also available.

The design of the car frame involves the use of two side members with cross members. This element was structurally strengthened through the use of special linings outside and inside. Thus, the strength characteristics of the basic design of the machine have increased significantly.

Transmission

Since about 2008, the Kama3-65225, like other heavy trucks of the Kama Automobile Plant, has been equipped with Ecosplit family gearboxes, products (since 2005, the ZF-Kama joint assembly plant has been operating in Naberezhnye Chelny). These manual transmissions are used on many European-made trucks, even Mercedes-Benz, although they have their own full production of all transmission units.

The gearbox model used on the KamA3-65225 is “ZF 16S1820”. This is a sixteen-speed gearbox, with the following gear ratios: 1-13.8-12.92; 2-11.54-9.49; 3-7.93-6.53; 4-5.46-4.57; 5-3.82-3.02; 6-2.53-2.08; 7-1.74-1.43; 8-1.00-0.84; ZH-12.92-10.80. Main gear: gear ratio = 5.11 or 5.143 (depending on configuration).

The production volume of ZF gearboxes in Naberezhnye Chelny has been increasing all the time, and has now reached 50 thousand units per year. About 80% of KamA3 trucks are equipped with nine- or sixteen-speed gearboxes of this brand.

Manual transmission ZF 16S1820.

An automated 12-speed ZF AS Tronic gearbox and an Allison Transmission with a torque converter were also successfully tested on the KamA3-65225. These options further increase the off-road capability of a heavy vehicle. However, they have no prospects for this model: they are too expensive, increasing the price of the car by as much as 1-1.5 million rubles. But they are still offered as an additional option.

The transfer case is a classic KamAZ, mechanical, two-stage with a locking center differential and pneumatic control. A quieter transfer case from ZF/Steyr is available as an option.

For a long time, the Kama3-65225 used Hungarian-made drive axles (Madara, Raba and Dana). In recent years, thanks to the launch in 2022 of a modern robotic gear processing complex, drive axles with hub planetary gearboxes of our own production are being produced in Naberezhnye Chelny. Purchases from Hungarian companies are kept to a minimum.

Cabin

The car's cabin has been completely updated. Thus, its aerodynamics have significantly improved, which also affected the quality performance of the equipment. The developers paid special attention to the interior space, which was completely redesigned to provide a comfortable environment for the driver.

Innovations in the exterior of the truck's cabin are noticeable in the side spacers, wide aerodynamic bumper and “inflated” fenders, which protect the body from stones and dirt. These design features minimize air turbulence that creates noise and also help direct air flow away from the truck.

Access to the interior, as well as the ergonomics of the cabin of the new car, are implemented perfectly. It is easy for the driver to climb to the workplace, allowing him to spend a long time behind the wheel without feeling discomfort.

Suspension

The Cummins brand engines used have expanded the offer of the Kama Automobile Plant, however, unlike domestic engines, they require specific care and are very demanding on the quality of oil and fuel. Also, “foreigners” vitally need timely maintenance and service. If the manufacturer's instructions are followed, their warranty mileage exceeds 1 million km.

Most often, the KamAZ-65116 is equipped with a Cummins L325 (“Euro-3”) internal combustion engine, the working volume of which is 8.85 liters, the power reaches 300 horsepower with a torque of 1300 Nm.

All mentioned power plants are coupled with a 10-speed ZF 9 manual transmission. These gearboxes are characterized by a hydraulic drive and a single-plate clutch. Their design also includes remote control.

The axle ratios associated with the transmission are 5.94 and 6.53. The first value is typical for cars with a lower exhaust, and the second, respectively, for models with an upper exhaust. The rear axles also have an inter-wheel locking function.

History of the model

The development of truck tractors with a 6x4 wheel arrangement started at the Kama Automobile Plant more than 30 years ago. The pilot model, KamAZ-5410, was intended for use with trailers and semi-trailers whose weight did not exceed 25 tons.

Later, an improved version appeared with the marking 54112. Its main differences from its predecessor were: increased load capacity, placement of components behind the cabin, larger tank volume and design features of the springs.

With the advent of the new millennium, the line of three-axle tractor units has been updated. The model with index 54115 was equipped with a high cabin, a 240 horsepower diesel turbo engine that complies with Euro 2 standards, as well as a 9-speed manual transmission.

The next truck tractor in this line was the KamAZ-65116, which rolled off the assembly line in 2009. It was recognized not only as a worthy successor to previous models, but also received a number of improvements that improved its comfort, efficiency and safety.

Fuel consumption

One of the main technical characteristics of cars, including KamAZ-65116, is fuel consumption in various operating modes of the vehicle.

The new product from the Kama Automobile Plant needs 36.5 and 40.5 liters of diesel fuel, respectively, in summer and winter to cover hundreds of kilometers in the combined cycle.

The standard fuel tank, which is installed in model 65116, can accommodate 350 liters of diesel fuel. Such a reserve of fuel allows us to talk about decent autonomy of the vehicle.

Gas engine

In power units, there has been a departure from the traditional V-shaped KAMAZ “eight” - a gas engine and a Cummins inline six of a smaller volume have appeared, but with the same traction characteristics. A transmission made in Germany is used. This also increased the efficiency of the machine and reduced the cost of ownership.

Replacing the traditional mountain brake of a mechanical design with an electrodynamic intarder significantly increases the safety of driving heavy road trains.

The developers of KamAZ-65116 did their best. They provided in the car all the qualities that a full-fledged truck tractor should have. The result was an efficient and safe truck, which can still be considered quite modern in this class of trucks, taking into account the price and characteristics. A comfortable driver's seat, a minimal set of sophisticated electronic devices, a soft air suspension, ideal interior ergonomics, a spacious interior and a full-fledged berth, high load capacity and power, relatively low fuel consumption and acceptable aerodynamics are the key advantages of the KamAZ-65116 compared to competitors in this price category .
