MAZ-215
is a Belarusian low-floor articulated bus from the Minsk Automobile Plant. The vehicle is an articulated bus with a driven central axle and follows a 6 × 2 (2) drive formula. This is the successor to the MAZ-205.

Note: the hump on the roof above the engine (2019) MAZ-215 is the successor to the similar MAZ-205 and was developed in 2014 on the occasion of the Men's World Hockey Championship in Minsk to transport fans to stadiums. Depending on the configuration, the buses are designed for approximately 170 passengers with 40 seats. Many details and functions were borrowed from its predecessor. From the articulated bus design to the gearbox and engine to the various chassis parts. Body parts, if possible, were adopted from the smaller MAZ-203 and MAZ-206. They consist of galvanized sheet steel, aluminum, and also fiberglass. The front end, glued to the frame, is completely identical to that of other buses of the same series. [1]
Many components for the car are purchased from Western manufacturers. The inline six-cylinder diesel engine is produced by Mercedes-Benz in all versions and is designed for a range of 1.5 million kilometers. The automatic transmission is manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen. The braking system components are supplied by Knorr-Bremse, and the bus has ABS, ESP and traction control. The front wheels are connected to the car frame through an independent suspension, the two rear axles are made in the form of rigid axles. All axles were equipped with air suspension in combination with hydraulic shock absorbers. The entire chassis is designed to be suitable even for poor road conditions. [1]
Technical changes compared to the previous model mainly affected the engine compartment. Like its predecessors, it is located in a separate compartment in the front cabin. In this way, the connection connecting both parts of the vehicle can be simple since there is no need to transmit driving force. To reduce the required space inside the car, the cooling system and some expansion tanks were moved to the car's roof in a distinctive protrusion. The reduced tank was moved to the rear of the vehicle. It is also possible to order the MAZ-215 with five instead of four passenger doors. The bus driver's workplace has also been redesigned. [1] The seats can be positioned in four different ways. [2]
At the time of its launch, the MAZ-215 was the largest articulated bus built by MAZ and the largest bus built in the former CIS, costing approximately 10 million rubles (then approximately 148,000 euros). [1] By early 2022, at least 330 examples had been produced. Five-door buses are often used in Minsk and Gomel, and several buses are used in Baranovichi, Bobruisk, Brest, Pinsk and other cities in Belarus. Many buses were sold to Mongolia (20 buses to Ulaanbaatar), to Russia (St. Petersburg), Serbia (Belgrade), to Ukraine (Kiev, Odessa, exported from autumn 2022 to Mariupol). [3] Based on the MAZ-215, the MAZ-215T trolleybus was developed for the car. In addition, the otherwise very similar MAZ-216 exists in the form of an articulated pusher bus.

MAZ opened a new trolleybus production facility in the domain of BelAZ
While the trolleybus industry in Russia is going through hard times, and Moscow has completely destroyed the trolleybus network as a class, completely opposite information is coming from neighboring Belarus: MAZ has built a new trolleybus plant near Minsk. Given the recent bankruptcy of Trolza, this information sounds like fake.
Slogans on MAZ are a separate issue. But the frame of the trolleybus is the very beginning of the assembly
But the plant really exists. It was built by MAZ together with the Eton company, a long-time partner of the car plant in terms of equipment for electric vehicles. True, the enterprise is not officially considered - in fact, it is just another MAZ workshop, only located in another city. This city is called Zhodino. Yes, yes, this is the very place where open-pit BelAZ trucks are produced (literally a hundred meters from the new plant).
The word “workshop” itself is deceptive. The premises, built from scratch, occupy an area of 6,600 m2 and are almost completely dedicated to production, with the exception of a small part where the administration of the enterprise is located. The inside is warm, light, quiet and spacious.
Throughout the assembly, the machines stand in two rows with minimal intervals
The assembly process is organized according to the point-to-point principle, and the entire production line, from the frame placed on wheels to the finished trolleybus leaving the gate under its own power, stretches over 180 meters.
And we are not talking about screwing on mirrors and hanging bumpers. Trolleybuses are actually assembled here from start to finish. Only the frames come to Zhodino in finished form, and everything else is assembled on site from components.
The workshop is divided into three parts. In the first, the frame is placed on wheels, “dressed,” plastic elements are installed and painted. Sheathing sheets are cut here, directly from the rolls.
Then the body is rolled to the adjacent part, where it is completely “stuffed”, windows are glued in and electrical equipment is installed on the roof. The finished product leaves the thread.
Currently the company employs 150 people. At the same time, about three dozen machines are in operation at a time. The rhythm of the assembly was calm, but no loitering public was noticed. Even smoke breaks are somehow businesslike.
The rags near the wheel are not garbage. It is used to remove “unauthorized” traces before shipping.
The main model currently produced by trolleybus production is the MAZ-203T70. A characteristic feature of the vehicle is its increased power reserve of up to 20 km without connecting to the contact network, provided by batteries. Naturally, this is additional weight and space taken away from passengers in the cabin. True, MAZ was able to get away with little loss by carving out a small nook near the back door and turning it into a cabinet for bags, but still.
The bonus of this approach is that the trolleybus is not tied to the contact network and can not only easily bypass small traffic jams, but also confidently travel through new neighborhoods where the contact network has not yet appeared.
Otherwise, the trolleybus is just like a trolleybus. Depending on the configuration, the cabin can accommodate from 88 to 102 passengers. Naturally, the larger the capacity, the fewer seats. For example, in the Minsk configuration, the one in the photo, 25 “chairs” are installed, of which only four can be considered “socially responsible” (not standing on podiums) - not a lot.
But the cabin has air conditioning, full-fledged sliding windows are provided, and the driver can monitor the order in the cabin and the situation around the car using cameras.
I would like to note that the commissioning of a new production facility allowed MAZ to finally correct the “shoemaker without boots” situation in which the enterprise had been all this time. By producing special bodies for third-party manufacturers, the plant itself simply gave this niche to other market players. Trolleybuses based on MAZ bodies were produced at different times by Belarusian, Russian and even some Western companies.
The MAZ-203TM7 body for UTTZ is identified by external warning speakers
With the release of its own model, the plant did not refuse to supply trolleybus bodies to other manufacturers. The closest cooperation is with the Ufa Tram and Trolleybus Plant (UTTZ). On the basis of MAZ-203TM7 bodies in Ufa, they set up the assembly of the UTTZ-6241.01 City Resident model - we got acquainted with it in detail in the winter. Currently, almost 80 Ufa trolleybuses in the back of MAZ are operating in different Russian cities.
The first MAZ-215T was assembled in 2014 and is now operating in Bobruisk
MAZ's immediate trolleybus plans include expanding the range. The assembly of the second copy of the MAZ-215T articulated trolleybus has already been completed. In addition, it is here, to the new workshop, that it is planned to move the assembly of MAZ-303E electric buses from Minsk, concentrating the production of all MAZ electric vehicles in one place. If there was a demand for all this...
Spare parts for Buses MAZ-215
The Minsk Automobile Plant began producing the MAZ-215 bus in 2004. The Belarusian tourist bus MAZ-215 is widely used for transporting passengers in large cities with intense and super-intensive passenger traffic. The basic model on which the MAZ-215 was created is the MAZ-205 bus. The main difference of this model is that the design is completely low-floor and has five doors with nine wings for passengers. The number of passenger seats varies from 38 to 40, the nominal capacity reaches 183 people. On the website you can buy MAZ-215 spare parts in a special catalog.
MAZ-215, unlike the base model, uses a different engine layout in the front part of the cabin, due to which a small mountain appears on the roof of the front part of the bus, where some of the equipment is located. The car body cladding parts are made of galvanized steel, fiberglass and aluminum panels. The design includes a Mercedes-Benz OM 926LA diesel engine with turbocharging and charge air cooling, meeting the Euro 5 environmental standard, and a ZF 6HP604C automatic transmission. The MAZ-215 has two configurations, which differ in the different number of doors and four seating options in the cabin. A trolleybus was developed on the basis of this bus, and subsequently a model with a pusher engine was developed - MAZ-216. Thanks to our MAZ-215 spare parts catalog, you can easily find all the spare parts you need, because using the catalog is easy and convenient.
