Mercedes Benz Sprinter Classic 311 CDI is a light-duty truck that is used in commercial transportation. The high popularity of the car is due to the constant improvement of performance parameters and appearance. In Europe, the car is in less demand and is considered obsolete. At the same time, Russian consumers value it for its optimal price-quality ratio.
The main advantages of the Mercedes Sprinter 311 include reliability, high build quality, installation of durable systems and mechanisms, ease of maintenance work and the ability to install a variety of add-ons.

Features of mentality
What can I say, overall Sprinter is great. As before, this is a guy's shirt designed for monotonous daily work. It doesn’t pamper you with special comfort, but it doesn’t exhaust your soul either. There is not perfect silence in it (a voluminous, all-metal van, after all), but there is no cacophony of sounds of unknown origin. Let me be honest, I got exactly what I expected from the car. Mercedes is Mercedes, and years are no hindrance to it.
But I do not share the critical attitude of my colleagues. Yes, the interior and exterior do not shine with modern design. It is clear that the ergonomics, designed many years ago, do not correspond to modern realities, but I cannot say that everything is a failure - personally, I really only lacked an additional 12-volt outlet, and I easily came to terms with everything else, especially Moreover, more modern analogues are also full of problems in terms of placing the same bottles or thermos.
The level of comfort did not disappoint me either - it’s not a passenger car, of course, but in terms of smoothness of ride, an empty long-wheelbase van can easily compete with most of the pickup trucks we have on offer and any of the newest mid-wheelbase vans.
As for the “poor” basic configuration, private owners are more likely to be put off by the antiquity of the original design than by the lack of climate control or a USB connector. But for now, our corporate fleet, on the contrary, is purchased according to the principle of minimalism, and in this case, the opportunity to buy an “empty” vehicle will be counted as a “plus.”
The only thing I unconditionally agree with is the pricing policy. Compared to the previously announced price, the “naked” vans (A2) and (A3) have risen in price by 37,000 rubles. The cost of the car in the Advanced configuration, without additional packages, is RUB 1,310,000. Given the presence of such serious players on the market, which initially have an advantage in the novelty of the proposed model, this, to put it mildly, is not a very loyal price tag. Moreover, competitors offer a completely different level of equipment for the same price. This is really something worth thinking about...

Device
The machine is equipped with a large number of safety systems as standard. The electronic stabilization system ESP is part of the control system; it will not allow the car to suddenly change direction. ABS and ASR systems, reliable brakes, airbags and seat belts are also installed as standard and protect the driver of the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Classic 311 CDI in emergency situations.
The main lighting is controlled by an automatic system. It evaluates the road situation, the level of illumination and determines the intensity of the glow. To operate the automatic system, a video camera is used, located above the front window of the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Classic 311. It transmits a signal to the on-board computer, which turns the lighting on and off.
An unexpected lane departure will activate the warning system. This reduces the risk of accidents if the driver is distracted or falls asleep at the wheel. The beep will attract his attention and wake him up. A deliberate lane change is recognized by the system and therefore no audible signal is given.

Not a designer for a long time
Ten years ago, the “German” Mercedes-Benz Sprinter was exactly like this: modern, reliable and durable. And if “modernity” at this stage can hardly be attributed to the advantages of the machine, then the other two points have not lost their relevance. What about the “Russian”?
At the time of the launch of production and the first acquaintance with the copies assembled in Nizhny Novgorod, the biggest complaint was about the build quality. The doors on the cars did not close, the gears did not engage, plugs fell out, etc. There were a lot of such defects, and each car had this set individually. Even the geometric dimensions varied from body to body. BUT…
According to the official version, the first 300 assembled cars were “recycled” - smashed in crash tests, distributed to dealerships and body manufacturing companies without the right to sell, simply disassembled for spare parts. It is hardly possible to verify this fact, but let’s take our word for it that those “designers” did not reach consumers.
By the way, you can check this yourself - if, when examining the car, something in it does not work “in the Mercedes way,” feel free to look at the VIN plate. Most likely, the serial serial number of the car will not exceed 200 - I felt this point well during the May presentation of Mercedes-Benz small commercial vehicles. There, “experimental” machines were visible to the naked eye.
And also, in order to eliminate bias in assessing the current technical content of the Nizhny Novgorod Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Classic, I talked with the main bodybuilders involved in their conversion. Their opinion: the first and current cars are completely different. If the experimental cars went through “pulling” and “adjustment” upon arrival, now everything is as it should be, everything works smoothly for Mercedes, and the interior trim kits have become universal and fit into any car without additional “on-site” adaptation.
It looks like the quality problem has indeed been resolved, and I have verified this personally.
Transmission
The interaction of a diesel engine and a six-speed manual or automatic transmission guarantees high technical performance and ease of control. To reduce fuel consumption in the mixed operating cycle, a large difference between the extreme gear ratios and a reduction in the engine shaft speed are provided.
The gearshift lever is located on the center console of the Mercedes Sprinter 311, which provides ease of use and frees up additional space in the cabin.

Driver's cabin
To manufacture the cabin, a stamping method is used, with which solid sheet metal is processed. The cabin has a hood design, and the main components are equipped with reinforcement elements. Safety is ensured by a large viewing angle and larger rear-view mirrors. The interior space of the cabin has a large volume, which ensures the comfort of two passengers and the driver.
Inside the cabin of the Mercedes Benz Sprinter 311, three seats or seven (double-row cabin) can be installed. Finishing materials are of high quality, which ensures their durability and wear resistance. The operator's seat has lumbar support and heating, is covered with fabric, and is equipped with seat belts and headrests.
Being inside the car is just as pleasant as being in a passenger car. The steering wheel can be adjusted in height and tilt. Air conditioning is available as an option.
The interior lining of the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Classic 311 is made of insulating materials, which guarantees driver comfort when transporting people and goods. The cabin is mounted on rubber cushions.
The pedals are installed taking into account the operator's comfort; they do not allow you to feel fatigue and discomfort even during long trips. The cabin has plenty of storage compartments.

Steering and instrument panel
An option is to install a steering wheel with improved comfort indicators. This reduces operator workload and ensures operator comfort even on long trips. The Mercedes 311 multifunctional column with a voluminous rim and chrome elements increases safety.
There are four double buttons on the steering wheel, with which you control the on-board computer, radio volume, telephone, and Assyst maintenance system. Safety is ensured by placing both hands on the steering wheel.

Brake system
As standard, the Mercedes Benz Sprinter 311 truck is equipped with disc brakes on all wheels and an improved hydraulic braking system with two circuits and an electric lining wear indicator. The AAS anti-rollback function, which is part of the ESP, is responsible for a smooth start to uphill movement. If the start is at the bottom of a slope, the system maintains pressure in the brake circuits for 2 seconds. This is enough for the driver to move his foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator, but the car does not roll back. The system is activated on a slope of 4% or more; failure occurs when stopping on a flat surface and with the handbrake active.

Ease of operation and maintenance
The components and components of the Mercedes Benz Sprinter 311 can last for a long time. On average, wear becomes noticeable after a mileage of 400-500 thousand km. The main problems in operation occur due to non-compliance with service intervals. The turbine must be checked after 1-1.2 million km. You also need to control the quality of the fuel, because... a poor composition can lead to clogging and failure of the fuel system.

Meticulous inspection
For the test I got a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Classic 311 CDI with a long wheelbase body (A3), wheelbase - 4025 mm, all-metal van in Advanced version.
I’ll make a reservation right away: taking a car below the Advanced configuration (RUB 46,000) means not appreciating your driver and depriving him of heated electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, electric windows, preparation for installing a radio (antenna, cable, 2 speakers), input/output lighting and trim the luggage compartment with hard fiber panels up to the roof.
The first two days of the test drive, I carefully looked for creaks, rustles, rattles or “boom-boom” from the belly of the car, but boy, the concept of “Russian assembly” and familiarity with “experimental” cars left their mark! At the end of the second day, I realized that I was doing nonsense, since there was nothing seditious in the behavior of the Sprinter Classic, and my manipulations with the van began to resemble senile insanity. Having made this discovery, I exhaled, and the continuation of the test proceeded in the standard way.
Alas, as before, two-week tests, although they allow you to feel the car from the driver’s point of view, do not give you the opportunity to put yourself in the place of the operator. Therefore, just in case, I will list the main problems that I encountered when operating the “German” Mercedes-Benz Sprinter T1N as a “minibus”:
– when the sliding door is simultaneously opened from the outside and from the interior, the handle lock breaks, and for repairs it is necessary to disassemble the trim;
– with frequent and long-term use of IV speed of the glass blower fan, the relay burns out;
– the additional heater does not turn on, and the cabin is cold in cold weather.
A lot of? Few? The fact is that these problems accompanied all the cars in the convoy... which were repaired once in the fleet, when “branded” parts were replaced with cheaper analogues. The same cars that were used by regular drivers and who operated their Sprinter as required according to the instructions, observing periodic maintenance and reacting even to a hint of a possible malfunction, did not recognize these issues... I believe the situation with Nizhny Novgorod cars will be exactly the same.
Conclusion - there is no need to save, and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Classic will not let you down!
What's the price?
Depending on the modification, the availability of additional options and equipment, the cost of the model is determined. Standard assembly costs about 1.66 million rubles. when installing a van-type superstructure, and 1.67 million rubles. – minibus.
When buying a used car, it is worth remembering that the technical condition of cargo versions will be better than passenger ones. This is due to the fact that the latter type of car is often used in urban transportation (minibus taxis), therefore, the wear of the brake system and other units and components will be much higher. When buying a used car, you need to pay attention to the condition of all systems and mechanisms, as well as corrosion.
The price of a Mercedes Benz Sprinter 311 produced in 14/15 is 1.3-1.7 million rubles, in 08/09 – 700-850 thousand rubles.

Mercedes-Benz stopped production in Nizhny Novgorod
The German concern Daimler and its member company Mercedes-Benz are ending cooperation with Oleg Deripaska’s GAZ Group. As the press service reported to Gazeta.Ru, the decision was made in connection with a change in the line of light commercial vehicles in Russia. The Sprinter Classic van currently no longer meets customer expectations, Mercedes-Benz noted.
“This is a complex but necessary decision for the direction of light-duty vehicles in Russia.
We remain committed to the Russian market and believe in its potential. However, we need to take the next step towards innovative products and a relevant portfolio. We will deliver attractive products to our customers,” said Lars Pauli, Director of Sales and Marketing for Mercedes-Benz Vans.
He noted that the Russian representative office of Mercedes-Benz RUS will “continue to provide after-sales service to Sprinter Classic owners.” The company remains committed to its long-term commitment to customers and will continue to provide warranty, parts and service to Sprinter owners, Pooley added.
The company noted that the Mercedes-Benz Vans division will focus on its existing current product portfolio. The company's current lineup includes the latest generation Sprinter, V-classe and Vito minivans. The German concern expects an increase in demand for light-duty vehicles on the Russian market; the Germans promised to consider candidates for laid-off employees of the Sprinter Classic project for open vacancies within the company.
The assembly of Mercedes-Benz Classic commercial vehicles at GAZ was suspended in the second half of 2022. Then, as the reason for the shutdown of the conveyor, Daimler management pointed to problems with components that allegedly did not arrive at the plant.
In April of the same year, the US Treasury imposed personal sanctions against Oleg Deripaska and his assets, including the GAZ Group, where the German Sprinter was produced. In December last year, the businessman, through resignation from management and a series of compromise decisions, managed to remove the three largest assets from sanctions: the En+ holding and the UC Rusal and energy companies controlled by him. However, the situation with the GAZ Group still remains not fully resolved.
In June of this year, the US Treasury Department required the Russian automobile plant to provide quarterly reports. Several Gazeta.Ru sources in the auto business and government associate the cessation of Mercedes-Benz production at GAZ with the influence of American sanctions. The GAZ Group does not comment on the sanctions issue but confirms that cooperation has ended.
“The joint project with Daimler is truly completed. The results of this cooperation, in which GAZ and the Yaroslavl Motor Plant (part of the Gazeta.Ru group) confirmed reaching the level of the best standards of the global auto industry, are difficult to overestimate, the press service of the GAZ Group reported to Gazeta.Ru.
The company noted that cooperation with the German auto giant made it possible to modernize 100 thousand square meters of production and logistics facilities, build new painting and stamping shops, which are now used to produce GAZ cars, and also introduce a quality system that is used at all Mercedes factories in world.
The “Quality Award” that the Yaroslavl Motor Plant received from Daimler for the production of high-quality components is one of the confirmations of the success of the project.
We are also proud that localization at the Gorky Automobile Plant and the Yaroslavl Motor Plant helped Mercedes-Benz Vans achieve record sales of the brand in the Russian light-duty vehicle market,”
- said an official representative of the Nizhny Novgorod Automobile Plant.
The departure of Mercedes-Benz from GAZ was expected, although the Germans kept the project frozen for a long time and there was little hope for the revival of the assembly, notes automotive expert Sergei Ifanov. Such a dramatic influence of American instruments of economic pressure on GAZ suggests that Russian industry is completely defenseless against foreign interference, the interlocutor is convinced.
Production of the Sprinter Classic at GAZ began in 2013. Mercedes-Benz managed to achieve annual production of over 10 thousand vans per year, the level of declared localization was about 50%.
