Operation of military equipment

Drivers who have undergone appropriate training are allowed to drive such a huge vehicle. It is worth noting that reverse gear is only activated after a complete stop. When driving on hard surfaces and dry ground, a higher gear is engaged, and in off-road conditions, a lower gear is engaged.

Historical reference

The sedan tractor is practically unknown to the general public. This is because it performed highly specialized tasks and was not encountered in everyday life. The production of a tractor with a sedan configuration was launched in the 50s of the last century. It began to be produced at the car plant in Minsk under the serial number 541.

The truck did not have proper maneuverability, and often had to constantly re-engage the hitch, which increased the towing time. The main highlight of the new tractor was the sedan-type body, and the weight of 28 tons, which made it the heaviest car in such a body.

Application of MAZ-457043 trucks

MAZ-457043 dump trucks are intended for transportation of a variety of bulk, packaged, piece construction and agricultural cargo on hard roads of the general road network, as well as on dirt roads in good condition.

Creation of MAZ 543

MAZ 543 is a special four-axle wheeled tractor, mass production of which began in 1962. It was supposed to become a universal weapon capable of mounting Temp mobile anti-aircraft installations, which then successfully showed themselves in testing. The first project, a sketch of a car, appeared in 1960. It used some components and assemblies from the MAZ 537 tractor. Sketches of the new project were prepared by designers V. Zharkov, V. Tsarev and L. Zhuk. For eight months, Minsk SKB 1 developed a special chassis, which was called MAZ 543. The chassis was created in such a way that it could transport various heavy equipment on any roads at any time of the year, in conditions of extreme cold and heat.

MAZs are distinguished by their unique cabin layout, which is not used anywhere else. Designer B.L. Shaposhnikov separated one cabin into two separate ones. Since it was not possible to come up with any other option for placing a long rocket. The cabins were designed for 2 people who sat next to each other. They were made of reinforced fiberglass and polyester resin. When testing its strength, the stand where it was installed collapsed. The cabin itself remained intact and unharmed. The MAZ-457043 dump truck is equipped with an engine from the Minsk Motor Plant MMZ D-245.30. Its environmental category is MAZ Euro 3 (unlike MAZ-457041 cars: they are equipped with an engine of the same model, but corresponding to the environmental class only Euro-2).

D-245.30E3 – four-stroke four-cylinder diesel engine, with an in-line (L-shaped) vertical arrangement of cylinders, a liquid cooling system, with gas turbine supercharging and intercooling of the charge air.

The working volume of this engine is 4.75 liters. Cylinder diameter – 110 mm, piston stroke – 125 mm. The compression ratio of this diesel engine is 17:1. Power is 115 kW (156.4 hp) Rotation speed is 2400 rpm. Maximum torque – 575 N.m. Rotation speed at maximum engine torque is 1500 rpm. Specific diesel fuel consumption is 210 g/kW (154 g/hp/h). The operating order of the cylinders is: 1-3-4-2. The dry weight of the D-245.30 E3 engine is 455 kilograms.

Turbochargers on these diesel engines are either Czech-made - S-14 Turbo, or our own, Belarusian - TKR 6.5.1 - produced by BZA, Borisov. The compressor used is from BZA-Borisov: model A.29.05.000A-BZA.

Advantages and disadvantages

Most drivers and owners of MAZ-5551 give a positive assessment of this car. Its price and features are well balanced, making it one of the most popular trucks in its market segment. The benefits include:

  • Efficiency is one of the best in its class and has a positive effect on the profitability of transportation.
  • Maneuverability allows you to freely pass where trucks of similar carrying capacity simply cannot squeeze through, in addition, its ability to be expanded by unloading from three sides.
  • Simplicity of design, maintainability - can significantly reduce operating costs and increase reliability.
  • An engine with a long service life, after replacing with supercharged power units, provides excellent traction.

However, the car has certain disadvantages, including:

  • Insufficient power of the air compressor, which takes a long time to pump air into the pneumatic system.
  • Unlike mud and sand, on ice the car exhibits poor grip, but this can be eliminated by installing specialized tires.
  • A shortened first gear reduces the dynamics of the car and makes the start of the ride more difficult on bad roads. However, on a flat, good road this problem does not exist, since the car can start even from second gear.
  • The lack of shock absorbers in the cabin results in a shaking and very tiring cabin, even when driving on normal road surfaces.

Transmission

The D-245.30 diesel engine works in conjunction with a five-speed gearbox made by the Smolensk Automotive Aggregate Plant, model SAA3-433420. This is a fully synchronized gearbox, which is distinguished by the presence of a wide range of gear ratios: 5 - O.81, 4 - 1.O, 1 - 5.81, 3 - 1.59, 2 - 2.94 and reverse - 5.22.

These gearboxes have long been successfully used with diesel engines not only from the Minsk Motor Plant, but also from the Yaroslavl Plant, as well as with imported Cummins and Deutz engines. At an engine speed of 1800 rpm and with fifth gear engaged, the SAA3-433420 gearbox allows you to reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. The gearboxes of this model have proven to be extremely reliable and wear-resistant units that can be operated for at least 700 thousand kilometers without the slightest problem.

Malfunctions

During operation, drivers encountered the following list of problems:

  • Failure of the compressor tension roller, a crack in the liner that led to the spilling of antifreeze, problems with gear shifting. These problems were observed on trucks with a mileage of 30-35 thousand kilometers;
  • Failures of the rear axle gearbox may occur after a mileage of 30,000 kilometers;
  • After 150,000 kilometers, it is recommended to carry out a major overhaul of the internal combustion engine;
  • After a mileage of 20-25 thousand kilometers, the rear springs break.

Attention! All malfunctions arise due to non-compliance with the operating conditions of the truck, exceeding the maximum permissible weight of the transported cargo, or excessively intensive operation without timely technical inspection and maintenance.

“Factory” problems include poor noise and heat insulation and a low level of anti-corrosion treatment of the body. A car that has recently rolled off the assembly line begins to become covered with corrosion elements.

Suspension and chassis

The MAZ-457043 is based on a spar frame with two channel-section spars and tubular and channel-section cross members.

The suspension of the MAZ-457043 is of a dependent type, with longitudinal semi-elliptical springs. Anti-roll bars are also installed on the front axle. The truck of this model is also equipped with telescopic shock absorbers, which make the use of this vehicle more comfortable both in urban conditions and on regular dirt roads.

The front springs are installed on special platforms of the front axle beam and attached to it with stepladders. The springs are attached to the frame using removable overhead lugs, which are connected to the main leaves with special stepped pins, and to the spring brackets with ordinary pins.

The main and additional rear springs are attached with stepladders to the rear axle beam. An additional spring is placed on top of the main one, and spacers are installed between them. The fastening of the front and rear ends of the main rear spring to the frame is similar to the fastening of the front one.

The tires installed on the dump truck of this model have the following standard sizes:

  • 235/75R17.5 – tubeless, with road or universal tread pattern; or
  • 10R17.5 – tubeless, with an all-terrain tread pattern; or
  • 8.25R20, NS12 – tube tires with a universal or universal-economical tread pattern.

The mid-ton truck is equipped with a pneumatic-hydraulic brake system with 420 mm drums on all wheels and, as standard, an ABS - anti-lock braking system. The driving axle of the car is rear, with a double tire.

Cabin MAZ-457043

The truck is equipped with a classic MAZ small-type cabin, rectangular, with slightly smoothed corners; “day” (not equipped with a sleeping place). The interior of this truck is designed quite ascetically. The main material is gray plastic. The large steering wheel, familiar to the MAZ cabin, is complemented by round instruments mounted on the console. Their backlight is moderately bright, and this allows you to read information from them in the dark with sufficient comfort.

Small cabins are intended for all MAZ vehicles used when working over short distances: on dump trucks and trucks operated in urban environments. Large cabins with one or two berths are intended for long-haul tractors.

Design

The vehicle is practically no different in appearance from its predecessor, the MAZ-4370 truck. A huge black massive radiator grille with horizontal crossbars, an angular cabin with rounded edges, a massive windshield, awkward rectangular headlights located on the bumper indicate that appearance is not the main thing in this truck. The design almost entirely “came” from the late 80s, mid-90s of the twentieth century.

Attention! Despite its unprepossessing appearance, the truck has a memorable design. This is due to elements characteristic of Minsk trucks - a massive radiator grille, aerodynamic trims on the sides of the cab, rectangular head optics placed on the truck’s bumper.

Tipper loading platform

If the MAZ-457043 car is equipped with a cargo platform with rear unloading, it is a welded metal body with an opening tailgate. The platform has rear unloading, with automatic opening of the tailgate locks. The rear side hinge is top.

The floor in the back of the MAZ-457043 is flat and not equipped with exhaust gas heating. It is equipped with opening side and rear sides. To service the dump truck, a safety stop is provided (the platform is raised for unloading backwards). In order to limit the platform's elevation angle, a safety rope was installed. The lifting angle of the dump truck platform is 50°–3° on either side.

The design of the MAZ-457043 body provides for the possibility of installing a protective awning, which prevents bulk cargo from spilling out and blowing out when the vehicle is moving. This awning is secured with a rubber cord using the hooks on the side sides. In the event that there is no need to cover the cargo, the awning is laid on the front side of the platform, tied with two ropes attached to it.

The design of the platform provides for the installation of extension sides to increase the volume of the body when transporting lightweight cargo. Standard extension sides are mesh (with woven wire mesh, corresponding to GOST-Z826).

The lifting mechanism of the dump truck's cargo platform raises it to an angle of 47–5° degrees, and then lowers it. And also - stopping in an intermediate position, auto-limiting the lifting angle, shaking the loaded platform in the final stage of its lifting, for the best dumping of bulk cargo, auto-failure of the mechanism in case of serious overload of the car body.

The design of the platform (without extension sides) provides the possibility of installing an awning to cover the transported cargo.

Reviews from drivers and owners

Reviews about dump trucks of this model are different and contradictory. Some operators highly praise MAZ-457043 trucks, calling them reliable and durable vehicles, which are also unpretentious and economical in maintenance/repair. Others were less fortunate, and they curse this model for all it's worth, wanting to get rid of their dump truck as quickly as possible - they were so tired of it with frequent breakdowns.

Everyone notes the good smoothness of the car, especially for a truck with springs all around. Softness manifests itself on the road of any surface and quality. With the acceleration dynamics of the MAZ-457043, everything is also in perfect order. Diesel fuel consumption is on average around twenty liters per 100 kilometers.

Thanks to its short wheelbase, the MAZ-457043 dump truck is a fairly maneuverable vehicle. The car's handling is definitely good - the steering wheel is light, the response to the brake pedal is quite predictable.

But no one likes doors in the cabin. To close them from the inside, you need to put in a lot of unconventional effort. You can't really adjust the hinges. The same can be said about castles. The MAZ-457043 cabin is described as “very simple, spartan, but not cramped.” The appearance and interior decoration are very, very modest: it smacks of the 1990s. Or even the 1980s.

Drivers don't complain about the seat. Strange as it may seem, it will not be difficult for a driver of any height and build to get comfortable behind the wheel in the cabin of this dump truck. If your back gets tired, it doesn’t get tired at all and not quickly. During operation, extraneous noises and creaks appeared in the cabin. The quality of the metal is not bad, but rust still creeps out, both on the body and on the cabin. Although this truck breaks down from time to time, it is quite repairable and repairs usually do not take much time or effort.

A large number of equipment for various purposes were produced based on the chassis:

The machine is equipped with a tank of a special design, which makes it possible to reduce the height of the equipment. Thanks to this, the tanker could be transported in the cargo compartments of transport aircraft.
  4. Truck tractor model 35334 with a load capacity of up to 20,000 kg.
  5. AC tanker truck designed for the delivery of drinking water. Special versions were produced, used for transporting food products (milk, kvass or beer).
  6. Machines for transporting concrete mixtures. The solution tank is driven by a separate diesel engine.
  7. Construction dump trucks with 1 and 3-way unloading. The body drive is hydraulic, control is carried out from the cab.
  8. Drilling rig 1BA15V, providing a drilling depth of up to 500 m. The installed equipment is driven by the main diesel engine.

Refuelers

From 1980 to 1984, an automobile tank on a MAZ chassis was assembled at the Bataysk Energy-Mechanical Plant. It was called ACM-8-5334. It was a fuel oil tanker for transporting heavy petroleum products.

At the same time, the TZA-7.5-5334 automobile fuel tanker was designed at the Tikhoretsky Machine-Building Plant, which went into production in 1981.

Sixty percent of all production went to the needs of the army - mainly for refueling aircraft. Twenty-five were sent to civil aviation, the rest went to the national economy.

Even the flattened shape of the tank on this tanker is a necessary measure in order for the vehicle to fit into the cargo compartment of heavy BTA aircraft.

Due to the installation of additional equipment in the form of pumps, pipelines, hoses, dispensing units and refueling nozzles, the vehicle became heavier up to 16.5 tons. Today there are quite a lot of offers on the market for conversion TZA-7.5-5334. In Soviet times, military acceptance at factories was very strict in selecting products, even rejecting cars with scratches on the instrument glasses.

Therefore, you can count on the good condition of the offered army vehicles.

The price on the automobile market for fuel tankers is quite reasonable: a car produced in 1987 can be bought for 250,000 rubles, a car produced in 1992 can be purchased for 450,000 rubles.

Drilling rigs

A number of Russian factories, such as the Bryankovsky Drilling Equipment Plant or Izhmashstanko, at one time launched the production of drilling rigs on the MAZ-5334 chassis. This equipment allows drilling to depths of up to 500 meters or more.
