The construction of an automobile plant in Minsk, bloodless from the fascist occupation, began in 1944. During testing, MAZ-555102-020 showed excellent dynamics

This test had one more important difference from the previous one. Let's start the story with him. So, about the features of operating the MAZ-555102-020 car in winter.

During testing of the car at the Dmitrovsky test site and driving MAZ from and back, the air temperature ranged from –7 to –19°C, which made it possible to fully evaluate the heating system.

Having examined the car allocated for testing, we wisely clarified with the company’s employees that the cooling system of our car was filled with low-freezing coolant, which means the frost was not terrible, after which we set off for Dmitrov. The thermometer outside showed -17°C, the car was taken from the street, so we were eagerly awaiting the engine to warm up and warm air to flow from the heater into the cabin. After 15 minutes of driving, the coolant temperature gauge moved from a dead point, we were unpleasantly surprised that the fan was blowing outside air into the cabin. We didn’t want to freeze, so we stopped, opened the radiator grille and probed the coolant supply hoses to the heater core. Imagine our amazement: they simply froze! As it turned out later, the plant filled the cooling system with water, and the employee preparing the car for the test simply ran into an unscrupulous seller.

The electric gearbox just dangles

In a cold cabin we got to the test site and left the car in a warm room to thaw until the morning. During the drive at a speed of 60 - 70 km/h, the temperature indicator needle did not rise above the beginning of the yellow sector, i.e. In such weather and in such driving conditions, it was impossible to warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.

The first impression of the car was spoiled, but during the drive we more than once recalled with gratitude the editorial management, who equipped the testers with warm winter clothing.

The next day the air temperature rose to -7°C, the car thawed overnight and, having started the engine, we went to test the “curb weight”. Having worked all day, we had no complaints about the temperature comfort in the cabin of our “experimental” one. When the temperature in the engine cooling system is 40°C and above, the cabin heater operates normally.

The cabin suspension is still a bit harsh

A few words about the temperature regime of the engine. In the modes of warming up the car (carried out on the highway, do not confuse it with warming up the engine) and maximum speed, after 20 minutes of driving, the coolant temperature indicator arrow is on the border of the green sector, i.e. The engine is warmed up to almost operating temperature. During fuel consumption measurements at constant speeds, the engine coolant temperature decreases as the vehicle speed decreases. At 60 km/h, the temperature gauge needle is in the first third of the yellow sector, and when parked with the engine running, it goes to the very beginning. True, this temperature is sufficient for the cabin heater to operate.

The reason for the unstable temperature regime of the engine, in our opinion, is the quality of the Yaroslavl diesel thermostats, and the absence of blinds or curtains in front of the car radiator does not allow one to compensate for the poor operation of the thermostat “manually”.

But the engine protection on the dump truck is not enough

After a day of working with an empty car, we drive it into a warm room for the night, since the experimental determination of the freezing point of the “low-freezing” coolant and its ability to destroy the engine block went far beyond the estimated costs.

Let's try to roughly compare the driving properties of two twin MAZs when empty. Rough, because the difference in ambient temperature when testing twins is 22o. We have added a table of test results for the MAZ-5551-020 car with the YaMZ-236M2 engine, 180 hp, taking it from the test of the MAZ-5551-020 car. The power of the YaMZ-236NE2 engine is increased through the use of turbocharging with intermediate air cooling in an aluminum radiator located directly in front of the radiator of the engine cooling system.

A more powerful car has advantages when simulating urban traffic (HC). MAZ-555102-020, despite worse temperature conditions, covered the typical route with 11% higher speed and 9% lower fuel consumption than MAZ-5551-020. The “eco-friendly” MAZ also turned out to be more dynamic: it showed a 5% higher maximum speed and a 5% better acceleration time. In terms of fuel consumption at constant speeds, a car with a conventional engine has a slight advantage.

The air filter clogged indicator, in our opinion, is a bit flimsy

Loaded vehicle testing

Having loaded the MAZ with ballast (sand mixture) and weighed it, we began testing the fuel and speed properties. The air temperature was kept within 6 - 7 degrees below zero, which made it possible to correctly compare the temperature conditions of the engine of an empty and loaded car. On this day the weather almost let us down. By the middle of the measurements, it began to snow, and we completed them on a snow slope that we had created.

In the modes of warming up the car and driving at maximum speed, the engine finally warmed up to normal operating temperature: the arrow of the coolant temperature indicator took a position in the green sector. As the driving speed decreased, the coolant temperature also gradually dropped, although it was slightly higher than with an empty car.

The Minsk dump truck is equipped with a solid bumper at the rear

Naturally, when parked with the engine running, the coolant temperature turned out to be the same as that of an empty car. It is noteworthy that the “warmer” engine had virtually no effect on the temperature comfort of the cabin, except that at maximum speed it was (subjectively) a little warmer.

Comparing the driving properties of loaded vehicles, we note that the advantages of a MAZ with a more powerful engine in acceleration dynamics have become more significant. The difference in maximum speed remained, and in terms of acceleration, the more powerful engine provided an advantage of 20 to 50% over MAZ with the usual Yaroslavl “six”. And fuel consumption at constant speeds is better for a car with a supercharged engine, despite the worst weather conditions. This is how the comparison of twins turned out.

The spare wheel of the dump truck now has a winch, instead of a “frame” mount

Let's not dwell on a few unpleasant little things. We only note that there were fewer of them on this car than on previous MAZ and MZKT vehicles. And besides, there was no runout of the right (as well as the left) front wheel. It turns out that discless wheels can be screwed on correctly in Minsk...

In conclusion, a few words about the shortcomings that were noted in previous articles. According to them, representatives of the plant told us this. An unsprung passenger seat and a creaky driver's seat, mirrors with a strange electric heating that cannot be connected, which does not heat, a cabin that is rigidly attached to the frame, without springs or shock absorbers - all this falls into the category of “but cheap”. This is exactly the configuration that was ordered. Today, a buyer can have a fairly well-equipped car from Minsk, but this is a matter of economic feasibility.

General impression

Overall, the car left a pleasant impression. We got acquainted with the vehicle in the most economical version of the dump truck, which is sold at the lowest price. Summing up, we can come to the conclusion that Minsk automakers produce high-quality, reliable equipment.

Body quality leaves much to be desired

When developing this model, the shortcomings present in previous models were taken into account and improved. So, in the MAZ -5551, the designers finally said goodbye to the crowbar-shaped gear shift lever, which was present in all previous models.

And it is no longer necessary, as before, to catch transmissions throughout the entire cabin space. At the same time, the gear shift pattern remained the same.

The drum handbrake on the MAZ-5551 has been replaced by brake chambers with spring energy accumulators. True, the chambers are not equipped with bolts for forced release of the brakes in the event of a lack of air in the system.

But such shortcomings should be treated with understanding, because the cost of the car is significantly lower than similar foreign-made models, stuffed with all sorts of additional components and systems.

Of course, when testing the dump truck, many elements were discovered that required “hands-on,” but there were significantly fewer of them than on any of the vehicles produced at CIS car factories. Thus, the MAZ-5551 dump truck proves that it was not in vain that it inherited the nickname “hard worker”, deserved by its predecessor MAZ-503 back in the 60s.

MAZ-551605: equipment options

A family of new three-axle dump trucks under the designation MAZ-5516 has been produced at the Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) since 1994. The distinctive features of the family are simplicity of design and a large margin of safety. These factors are considered decisive when purchasing new or used cars based on the MAZ-5516. Buyers are not afraid of either the low corrosion resistance of the cabins or the unstable quality of the plant’s products.

Development

The first prototype of the modernized car, designated MAZ-551605, was created in April 2002. The YaMZ-238DE2 diesel engine was used as a power unit. Subsequently, the base chassis began to be used for the installation of various superstructures - dump bodies of various configurations, concrete mixers, utility vehicles, etc. Thanks to the powerful main engine, it was possible to ensure high technical characteristics of the MAZ-551605.

The chassis is driven by two rear axles, which provides good cross-country ability and allows the vehicle to be used in difficult road conditions. To meet modern requirements, the brake system uses an anti-lock braking system. Upon request, the chassis is equipped with a comfortable cabin with additional insulation and seat belts for all seats, an autonomous engine heater, and a speed limiting system.

Dump truck

A three-axle dump truck based on the MAZ-551605 is designed for transporting bulk cargo with different fraction sizes. Its body can be unloaded in three directions. There are several variants of the dump truck, differing in the type of cab, type of dump body and the ability to work in conjunction with a trailer.

Currently produced vehicles can be equipped with YaMZ-238DE2 diesel engines or a more powerful YaMZ-7511-10E2 engine. Both engines comply with Euro 3 emissions standards. The engines are equipped with gearboxes either domestically produced (model YaMZ-2381) or imported. The standard load capacity of all dump trucks is 20 tons.

One of the activities of the car is the transportation of agricultural goods. The MAZ-551605-271 with high body sides is designed to perform such work. If necessary, the dump truck can transport any bulk cargo. The body with one-sided unloading has a floor heating system using exhaust gases. The vehicle is equipped with a sprung cabin without a berth.

The power unit consists of a 330-horsepower diesel engine with a YaMZ-238DE turbine and a nine-speed gearbox model 9JS135A. The car has a large power reserve thanks to a tank with a capacity of 350 liters.

Concrete mixer

A mixer for cement and concrete mixtures under the designation ABS-8 DA has been developed and manufactured on the Mazov chassis. The concrete mixer is designed for a wide operating temperature range (from minus 30 degrees to plus 40).

The working drum with a capacity of 8 cubic meters is made of steel sheet and has an adjustable tray for unloading the mixture. The drum is loaded from above, through a special neck. The unloading height is adjusted by tilting the tray and additional chutes and can reach 2 m from the ground level. The average unloading speed is about one cubic meter per minute.

To mix the mixture on the go, a separate 50-horsepower air-cooled D-144 diesel engine is used. Rotation is transmitted to the drum through a gear reducer. The maximum drum rotation speed is up to 14 rpm. The ABS-8 DA concrete mixer on the MAZ-551605 chassis has good speed characteristics - the maximum speed of a loaded machine reaches 50 km/h, and when empty it reaches 75 km/h.
