The EK-12 is great for working in confined spaces thanks to the ability to reduce the turntable. Thanks to the unique boom geometry, the excavator allows you to create deep and narrow wells and pits. Few models can perform such work. The specialized design of the equipment allows it to be transported without restrictions, even on general purpose roads and highways. Operating the EK-12 is intuitive and simple.

Initially, the model belonged to the category of highly specialized machines, for which parallel operations were not provided. Subsequently, Tverskoy Excavator developed many additional modules that made it possible to expand the perimeter of equipment use.

Now EK-12 has increased technological capabilities:

  • variable boom geometry, providing increased digging depth and high maneuverability of the model;
  • increased movement speed;
  • reduced radius of the turntable, thanks to which the excavator can be used in cramped conditions;

Modifications

TVEX EK-12 is produced in several modifications:

  1. The EK-12-10 features an improved hydraulic system, which includes a Bosch-Rexroth pump and a travel motor. The remaining components remained unchanged, as did the design of the excavator.
  2. EK-12-20 is characterized by the presence of a modified boom mechanism and blade included in the basic assembly. A bucket for excavation work can also be installed here; its capacity is 0.5 m3. Stabilizers and the PSM hydraulic system are installed as standard. Technical characteristics are identical to the base model.
  3. EK-12-24 is an improved version of the 12-20 model. A distinctive feature is the installation of a Bosch-Rexroth drive motor and hydraulic pump. These models are no different in design.
  4. EK-12-40 is a modern modification, which is equipped with all the innovations of previous models. It is equipped with a bucket with a capacity of 0.65 m3 and an engine from the American company Perkins, unlike the others, equipped with the Russian D-243.

Power unit

The EK-12 wheeled excavator is equipped with a self-produced D-243 unit with a power of 60 kW or 81 horsepower. This is a four-cylinder (d=110 mm) four-stroke model with a volume of 4.75 liters. The latest modification is equipped with a Perkins 1104C-44 unit. In the engine compartment there is a pump on the right, and cooling radiators on the left. The noise reduction system is located under the pump, which leads to additional heating. Air purification filters are installed in front of the radiator, and this complicates maintenance work and reduces the efficiency of the cooling system. A starter is provided for starting.

The equipment was initially developed specifically to perform a narrow profile of work, but over time the manufacturer has managed to significantly expand its scope of application by introducing a large number of additional modules.

Nowadays, the EK-12 wheeled excavator has the following technological capabilities:

  1. The machine's boom can change its geometry, which can significantly increase the digging depth and improve the maneuverability of the excavator.
  2. Compared to other Russian-made models, the EK-12 stands out for its rather high speed of independent movement.
  3. The rotating platform has a small radius, which allows the equipment to be used when working in conditions with a small working space.
  4. Ability to perform precision operations.

The excavator has a pneumatic system, which is what distinguishes it from foreign machines. This system is responsible for the operation of the brakes, both service drums and parking brakes. In addition, pneumatics allow you to turn the front axle on and off and change gears of a two-speed transmission. The pressure in the pneumatic system is maintained by a standard power plant compressor. It is worth noting that it comes into operation after turning on all sensors, valves and receivers located on the turntable structure.

  1. A variety of buckets with a capacity of 0.35 cubic meters and up to 0.5 cubic meters, which are designed for working with difficult soils, as well as for digging narrow trenches.
  2. Ripper with index 314-03-40.17.300, designed for opening asphalt or concrete pavements, as well as for loosening frozen and hard soils, hardened clay and rocks.
  3. Hydraulic breaker with index MG-300, performing various dismantling works of concrete and brick objects. In addition, this equipment is often used as a ripper when working with hard soils, but it can also compact loose soil.
  4. Hydraulic breaker with index MG-150, designed to perform the same work as the previous unit. This model differs from the previous one only in that it can be installed on all versions of the excavator, while the MG-300 is installed only on machines with a monoblock boom.
  5. Grab buckets with the GK-221 index, which, in addition to loading and unloading operations, also allow digging trenches and pits, developing wells and cleaning the working area from industrial waste. It is worth noting that this equipment can optionally be supplemented with a special full-rotary rotator, which allows you to perform certain types of work with maximum accuracy and convenience. There is also the possibility of increasing the depth of cargo gripping due to an extension made of several plates and guides mounted between them for the purpose of centering the equipment.

The EK-12 wheeled excavator is equipped with a unified cabin with a very modern appearance. Inside there is a lot of useful equipment that not only increases the level of operator comfort, but also simplifies operation. The cabin is equipped with a comfortable seat, which can be fully adjusted to the operator’s size and weight. The steering column is also configured this way. The front glass, if necessary, can be retracted under the roof ceiling. There is a small hatch on the roof itself. Optionally, the excavator can be equipped with special handrails, which, together with the short distance of the steps from the ground, allows the operator to climb into the cab without much difficulty.

The steering is hydraulically powered, so the operator does not need to exert much effort to turn. The control levers for the working parts of the machine are traditionally made in the form of convenient joysticks equipped with a servo drive. If all modern technology contains a lot of different electronics, then this model has quite a bit of it. However, this had a positive effect on the overall reliability and simplicity of the excavator. In order to reduce the cost of the model, the manufacturer abandoned the CAN bus and on-board computer.

As standard, the cabin is equipped with a Zenit 8000 heater, which functions by cooling the power plant. Air circulates directly through the radiator grille without diffusers or air ducts. Installation of air conditioning and an autonomous heating system is offered as an option.

The excavator is equipped with a domestically produced four-cylinder diesel power plant (D-243). It is worth noting that later models use the Perkins 1104C-44 engine, which is significantly superior in performance to the D-243. The engine compartment is quite spacious, which greatly facilitates the maintenance process. All pumps are located on the right side, including the hydraulic system pump when radiators are installed on the left side. The manufacturer installed the exhaust system above the pumping unit, which creates an additional thermal load. But the placement of air filters is not a very good solution, since they are placed in front of the radiator, due to which access was limited, and engine cooling is a little difficult. The unit is started at temperatures from minus 40 degrees to plus 40 degrees using an electric starter. Several modified versions of the excavator additionally have a Hydronic 10 liquid preheater, which only makes it easier to start the engine in cold weather.

EK-12 is less productive and compact among the entire line of excavators. Thanks to this, this model is an ideal option for performing any work in cramped conditions. This was also facilitated by the small turning radius of the superstructure, which is only 2000 millimeters.

Another key advantage is the ability to change the boom geometry, making the machine even more compact. This indicator is necessary in public utilities when performing repairs on constructed communication networks if it is necessary to dig narrow trenches or wells.

Also worthy of attention are the maneuverable qualities of the equipment, which are ideally adapted for movement in city traffic. This is also facilitated by the speed of independent movement, which in this model is 22.5 kilometers per hour.

Hydraulic system

EK-12 hydraulics are responsible for the smooth movement of working equipment and increase the efficiency of work. Optionally, Bosch-Rexroth elements are installed - distributor, motors, pump and control unit.

Hydraulic lines and cylinders are reliably protected in the body of the handle, which prevents them from being damaged during operation.

Purpose

The equipment is very popular in small construction organizations, various industries, agriculture and public utilities. The EK-12 is capable of coping with tasks such as digging narrow trenches and pits; opening of asphalt and concrete surfaces; destruction of brick, concrete and unreinforced structures; excavation; loading and unloading; loosening frozen soils and hardened clay; well development; laying and repairing communications; compaction of loose soil; cleaning the work area from industrial waste and much more.

Operator's cabin

The standard package includes the installation of a unified cabin, which is mounted on a large number of TVEX products. It is characterized by convenience and ergonomics.

The driver's seat can be adjusted depending on individual characteristics and preferences, as can the steering column. The windshield can be in the upper position, and there is a hatch in the roof.

Entrance to the salon is via steps, the lower of which is located close to the base; in addition, handrails are provided.

The standard equipment includes the installation of a Zenit 8000 heater, which is powered by the engine cooling system and is located under the seat. Air circulation occurs without the use of diffusers and air ducts. The EK-12 excavator can optionally be equipped with an air conditioning system and an autonomous heater.

Control system

The remote control located on the right rear is responsible for selecting the direction of movement of the excavator.
It has two control levers that can be stopped in three positions (up, middle, down). Depending on the position of this lever, the driving speed also changes. To increase it when moving forward, an additional lever for adding stroke and the ability to control the speed of the engine shaft are provided. At the TVEX plant, the EK-14 is produced complete with an electronic panel located in the front part of the cabin; it contains information about the state of the equipment at the current time.

The steering wheel is used as an emergency control system, which allows you to control the equipment when the engine stops. The effort when steering this type is proportional to the angle of rotation of the front wheels.

Ease of operation and maintenance

For storing the TVEX EK-12 excavator, closed premises or open areas that meet special requirements are best suited. Storing equipment outdoors in winter is only permissible if the turntable, cabin and working parts are periodically cleared of snow and ice. Items such as batteries, spare parts and tools must be brought indoors in cold weather.

To increase the durability of the excavator, it is necessary to change working fluids on time (seasonally and at time intervals). The fluid is changed for the first time after 100 engine hours have been used, after that - if it is necessary to switch to winter mode or after 2000 engine hours. Main oils are replaced at least once every two years, auxiliary oils - once a year.

The pressure gauges that are part of the excavator toolkit are used only when adjusting the fuses located on the hydraulic lines.

The price of EK-12 depends on the working element supplied with the equipment. A special feature of the machine is the ability to install equipment with a replaceable configuration. The handle is mounted in different lengths, which ensures ease of use in the presence of obstacles and in limited space. Most often, this advantage is necessary when carrying out public works, including when laying utility networks in wells and trenches.

The main types of auxiliary equipment include:

  • a grab designed for loading and unloading materials, developing trenches, pits, etc. GK-221 can be supplied complete with all-wheel drive hydraulic rotators;
  • to increase the digging depth, the grab is equipped with an extension consisting of two inserts and a guide that serves as a level;
  • hydraulic hammer used in the destruction of road surfaces, construction sites, and development of category IV soils. When installing a monoblock boom, installation of MG-300 is provided, in other cases - MG-150;
  • ripper used in road repair work, loosening category IV soils and cleaning curbs;
  • buckets with a capacity of 0.35-0.5 m3.
