Question No. 18 - What are the characteristics of different types of hydraulic hammers?

When purchasing various special equipment, it is most convenient to purchase all the necessary attachments there. However, often this is not possible or the need for such a tool arose later. In this case, the MG-300 is perfect. Not only does it have excellent compatibility with excavators from the same manufacturer, but it is also suitable for other models, as long as their weight class matches.

Alexander Belyaev from Surgut, 42 years old, asks a question:

I want to buy myself special equipment to quickly chip away ice build-ups in winter. I would like to know what types of hydraulic hammers exist?

Our specialist answers:

The main parameter of hydraulic hammers is impact energy. Depending on it, devices are divided into several types:

  • heavy (impact more than 3500 J);
  • medium (impact from 1500 to 3500 J);
  • small (impact from 400 to 1500 J).

How to choose the right hydraulic hammer

When selecting a suitable installation, you need to pay attention to:

  • the weight of the excavator to which the equipment will be attached;
  • fluid consumption;
  • pressure;
  • technical performance;
  • availability of repair work;
  • noise generated and degree of vibration.

Let's look at each nuance in more detail.

Weight of special equipment

According to established standards, a hydraulic hammer should be approximately ten times lighter than an excavator. However, it should not be heavier than the bucket in which the building material is located. If you use very heavy attachments, you cannot avoid frequent breakdowns in the connection points between the rod and the handle, the handle and the boom, and the boom and the platform.

Therefore, when purchasing a hydraulic hammer, you must know the weight of the excavator (most often it varies from two and a half to one hundred and twenty tons). Without this indicator, it will not be possible to select a device.

Working fluid

It is important that its consumption is correlated with the performance of the excavator hydraulic pump. In the event of a sharp discrepancy, the following problems may arise:

  • sudden pressure surges, shortening the period of operation of both expensive installations;
  • unstable functioning of the hydraulic hammer or inability to turn it on.

Modern hydraulic hammers are usually equipped with a system that controls the flow of working fluid and measuring devices. Such additions significantly expand the scope of their activities.

Pressure

The voltage created by the pumping unit of special equipment should not be lower than that of a hydraulic hammer. If the machine has a power controller, it is better to turn it on at a pressure reading that does not exceed the operating pressure level of the hydraulic hammer. If this requirement is not met, the power controller will start to turn on with each hammer cycle. This will significantly reduce the service life of the expensive installation.

Technical performance

The effective power of the equipment depends on the technical productivity - the energy with which it hits the surface and how often it does it per unit of time. However, it is almost impossible to determine the exact technical performance in real conditions. It is determined by many factors: the characteristics of the pump used, the angle between the axis of the hydraulic hammer and the vertical.

For this reason, hammer manufacturers inadvertently inflate actual energy and impact rates or indicate peak load values. However, real performance cannot be determined from these data. That is why, to obtain the desired result, the most important thing is to focus on the weight of the installation and the diameter of the lance.

Maintainability, ease of use

It is important that:

  • the main components of the mechanism could be easily reached;
  • the hoses were connected to the fittings quickly and without unnecessary manipulation;
  • Recharging the batteries did not take much time.

There are devices equipped with a modern automatic lubrication mechanism. Due to this, they can even function underwater.

Small class

Features of small class hydraulic hammers are:

  • light weight;
  • mobility;
  • compact dimensions;
  • ability to work in hard-to-reach places.

Composition of the lightweight hydraulic hammer BRUCE SGH series
With the help of these devices, work is carried out to destroy objects near which other structures are located. The smallest types can be used inside buildings for renovation or renovation.

Small hydraulic hammers are suitable for the following construction operations:

  • opening asphalt;
  • removal of ice build-up;
  • drilling brickwork;
  • soil compaction with additional equipment.

The disadvantage of such devices is their low performance.

To effectively use a mounted hydraulic hammer, you need to know the features of its design, operating conditions and maintenance requirements.
This was discussed in a previous publication. Today we will briefly talk about the products of some companies represented on the Russian market. Atlas Copco AB and Krupp Berco Bautechnik

Atlas Copco AB and Krupp Berco Bautechnik have made their alliance one of the world leaders in the production of hydraulic hammers. After all, Krupp has long been among the trendsetters in the production of this equipment, especially piston-type hydraulic hammers.

Models of Atlas Copco mounted hydraulic hammers (Table 1) of the light series are available with the letter designation SB. Their weight ranges from 35 to 419 kg; accordingly, such hammers can be used on excavators weighing from 0.35 to 12 tons. Lightweight hydraulic hammers developed by Krupp are also produced under the Chicago Pneumatics brand. This series includes CP100, CP150, CP200, CP300, CP400 - equipment for basic machines from 1 to 13 tons. Models of the middle MB series weigh 550-1700 kg and are designed for excavators weighing from 8 to 20 tons. The severe series is designated NV. These models weigh 2.2-7t. The leader of the heavy range - the six-ton hammer NM-3000 - is designed for machines weighing from 55 to 100 tons and is one of the most powerful hydraulic hammers.

Caterpillar Impact Products Ltd

The range of lightweight hammers from Caterpillar Impact Product Ltd (Great Britain), in which the piston stroke is made under the pressure of hydraulic fluid coming from the main line of the supporting machine, includes equipment weighing 130-830 kg. The produced models of the middle and heavy class weigh from 1 to 3.8 tons. The most popular of them are the N-63 for backhoe loaders. And four models of the same series - H-100Cs, H-116Cs, H12OCs, H-13OCs - are designed for medium-sized wheeled and tracked hydraulic excavators.

At the BAUMA 2007 exhibition, the company presented a new hydraulic hammer - the H180Ds, which surpasses even models in the 4000 kg class - this is the fourth addition to the D series model range over the past year. This hammer replaces the H180S and should be available in the third quarter. The H180Ds has larger piston and tool sizes, resulting in a 15% increase in productivity compared to the H180S.

Feel Industrial Engineering Co LTD

The advantage of Delta F hydraulic hammers (Table 2), produced by the South Korean company Feel Industrial Engineering LTD, is high performance characteristics at relatively low prices. It’s easy to choose the right one from a wide range of hydraulic hammer sizes. Based on the circuit and layout solutions, Fine hydraulic hammers can be divided into two groups. The first includes hammers of the Delta F3...F10 models, characterized by the fact that there is no mains accumulator in their pressure supply line. Impact energy is generated mainly due to the energy accumulated in the piston accumulator-pneumatic chamber during cocking of the striker. These hydraulic hammers are used on excavators weighing from 1 to 12 tons.

The second group includes hydraulic hammers Delta F 15...F 50, mounted on medium and heavy excavators weighing from 13 to 65 tons. A hydropneumatic accumulator is built into the pressure line of these hydraulic hammers, in which hydraulic oil and compressed nitrogen are separated by a rubber membrane. The hydraulic “filling” is produced in Korea, and the suspension mechanism for the excavator and the working tool are produced in Russia using Korean technology.

Nippon Pneumatic

In NPK hammers manufactured by the Japanese company Nippon Pneumatic, the diaphragm accumulator is excluded from the design and the main impact energy is generated by a gas accumulator acting on the piston. From the point of view of company representatives, this increases the reliability and performance characteristics of the hydraulic hammer. Lightweight E-series models typically weigh between 107 and 955 kg. Medium and heavy hammers are produced for excavators weighing from 17 to 110 tons. The new models are almost 30% superior in impact energy to similar hammers of the previous generation. Thus, in the GH series weighing 1730-3260 kg, thanks to the improved design of the gas accumulator and piston, the impact energy is even greater than that of the same hammers of the E series.

Rammer

The Finnish company Rammer (Table 5) is currently part of the AB Sandvik Coromant corporation and manufactures products not only under its own name, but also that serve as the basis for hammers from many other companies. The Rammer company produces models that can be started in severe frost without preheating. The main models are light, S series weighing 80-830 kg, medium - E series weighing 1040-1710 kg and heavy - G series weighing 2350-6600 kg. Also interesting are two innovative series: light in, which includes models for installation on machines weighing from 0.7 to 5.5 tons, and medium m, which is used on excavators weighing from 25 to 45 tons.

A large list of manufacturers of mounted hydraulic hammers indicates that this equipment is popular and in high demand.

Magazine “StroyTechExpert” No. 9/2007 “Mounted hydraulic hammer. Big names, quiet work”, author of the article S. Gusev

Middle class

For larger volumes of work, more powerful devices will be needed. For example, such as medium-sized hydraulic hammers. They are used most widely and are distinguished by their versatility, capable of working on objects of different sizes. For utilities, this device is the most economical option. It copes with most tasks and at the same time has a compact size. Middle-class hydraulic hammers cope well with crushing frozen soils. They are also used for:

  • rock crushing;
  • repair of melting furnaces;
  • soil compaction in the presence of special equipment.

When working on sites where there is a high building density, you should choose a hydraulic hammer impact energy within 2500 J. If the figure is higher, there is a risk that neighboring buildings will be damaged.

Choosing a hydraulic hammer supplier

When choosing a supplier, you need to pay attention to the following points:

  1. supply experience;
  2. availability of spare parts warehouse;
  3. availability of customer service.

Delivery experience

After you have decided on the hydraulic hammer model, housing type and manufacturer, you need to choose a reliable supplier who is ready to supply only original products on time and at an affordable price. Before purchasing a hydraulic hammer, you can check the contacts of the organizations operating this equipment to receive feedback on the operation of the hydraulic hammer and the supplier.

Availability of spare parts warehouse

You should always be confident that your equipment will operate without downtime. Do not forget that the cost of a hydraulic hammer in the end is not only the cost of its acquisition, but also the cost of owning it, which consists of the price of spare parts and losses from equipment downtime in the event of a lack of spare parts in the supplier’s warehouse.

Only a supplier with a spare parts warehouse and well-established logistics can ensure a low cost of ownership.

Warehouse of spare parts for hydraulic hammers

Availability of service department

A hydraulic hammer is a technically complex piece of equipment and often requires consultation from experienced service specialists for installation and operation. Do not repeat the mistakes of others, do not buy equipment from companies whose staff includes only sales managers. Correct adjustment of the pressure and flow of the excavator hydraulics, operator training and consultations on issues that arise during work are the key to uninterrupted operation of the hydraulic hammer for many years.

Customer Service

Heavy class

Heavy-duty hydraulic hammers are designed to solve complex problems. Before the advent of these devices, they were solved using an explosion. Heavy hydraulic hammers are needed for:

Hydraulic hammer HB 4100 for the toughest demolition jobs

  • carrying out quarry work;
  • rock crushing;
  • removal of large amounts of frozen ice;
  • demolition of buildings, bridges, industrial structures.

When using a heavy hydraulic hammer, more attention must be paid to safety, since the radius of scattering fragments is quite large.

For each type of hydraulic hammer, manufacturers produce several types of additional tools: peaks, chisels, caps, tongues, etc.

Additional hydraulic hammer tools

When destroying concrete structures and processing reinforced and asphalt concrete, open and closed hammers can be used. The latter are characterized by low noise and have less impact on the performance of the special equipment to which they are connected.

Auxiliary installation tools are:

  • Pike. Multifunctional element. Suitable for processing bricks, concrete, roads. May end in a cone or pyramid with projections. Most often there is a need to use a triangular or tetrahedral part - it is more in demand than a round cone. The irregularities on its surface make it possible to quickly break the material and create deep cracks in it. This has a positive effect on productivity. But with frequent use, the sharp edges wear off. Then the attached part loses its advantages. As for the round cone picks, they are suitable for crushing rocks, mining, and large construction waste. Their flat end is less likely to slip off these types of surfaces. During wear, the cone takes the shape of a convex sphere.
  • Wedge. It is used if it is necessary for the resulting cracks to move away from the base tool. This effect is required when forming trenches. The blades can be attached along the installation axis or across. The sharpening angle of the wedge can be 20° or more. It is desirable that the wedge cross-section be large. Small diameter tools often make a hole, but do not produce deep cracks in the desired direction.
  • Tamping. It is a non-standard type of equipment. This is a platform held by a strong steel rod and provided with grooves. It is connected to a hydraulic hammer. It is used strictly to implement specific manipulations. Needed for final soil compaction when performing some construction operations.

Considering the possibility of equipping a hydraulic hammer with various auxiliary systems, it becomes clear why it is so in demand in various fields. After all, it is thanks to him that the special capabilities of special equipment expand significantly.
