The special equipment of the Minsk Tractor Plant is popular not only directly in Belarus, but also far beyond the country’s borders. This is explained by the reliability and performance of tractor models, as well as a wide range of models with variations of both basic modifications and customized ones.
Model MTZ 1221.2 belongs to the middle segment line, namely class 2.0.
Among the main features are the following:
- work in any climatic conditions;
- work with any soils, including those with low bearing capacity;
- in its basic configuration, the equipment contains the necessary set of devices to effectively perform the assigned tasks;
- special equipment can be equipped with additional equipment, including from other models of tractors of this series. This tractor model is capable of integrating its functionality with other units of wide-cut and combined tractors of class 2-3;
- despite the fact that the tractor does not have significant design features, i.e. the design itself is quite traditional and simple, while the model is a reliable, productive, ergonomic, economical machine;

Technical characteristics of BELARUS-1221.2
The front portal 2-support axle of the BELARUS-1221.2 tractor consists of a self-locking differential, a main gear (bevel gears with a circular tooth) and planetary-cylindrical final gearboxes. The FDA control is carried out by an electrically controlled spool valve. The rear axle consists of a main gear (a pair of bevel gears with a spiral tooth), a final drive (a pair of spur gears) and a final planetary gear, as well as a differential locking mechanism in the form of a hydraulic friction clutch. The tractor produced by MTZ is equipped with an independent synchronous two-speed PTO (mechanical drive). The rear shaft is controlled by a hydraulic mechanism, while the front shaft is controlled by an electro-hydraulic system.
The BELARUS-1221.2 model is equipped with a mechanical step-range gearbox (16 forward gears, 8 reverse gears). On request, the car can be equipped with a manual transmission with a large number of gears: 24 when driving forward and 12 when driving in reverse.
The tractor is equipped with 3-disc dry mechanical brakes (increased size), consisting of friction discs, casings, balls, pressure discs and tension springs. Each brake is controlled by a separate pedal; for simultaneous braking, there is a locking bar that locks the pedals. A parking brake with a diameter of 178 mm (dry double disc) is attached to the right service brake housing. At the request of the client, “wet” 8-disc service and parking brakes can be installed on the rear axle of the tractor. In addition, the BELARUS-1221.2 tractor can be equipped with a single-line or two-line pneumatic drive for trailer brakes.

The model under consideration uses a hydraulic mounted system, consisting of an oil tank with a filter, a pump, controls, a flow distributor (two or three sections), a hydraulic lift and a hydraulic lift drive. The hydraulic control system of the three-point hydraulic lifting unit is equipped with a regulator-distributor built into a monoblock, which ensures operation of the system in three modes (positional, force and mixed regulation).
Features of the MTZ-1221 tractor
The machine is distinguished by its simple design, versatility, maintainability and high productivity. Among the features of this model are:

- MTZ-1221.3. Tractor equipped with an environmentally friendly 131.7 hp engine.
- MTZ-1221.4. A tractor powered by either a 136 hp or 141 hp engine.
- Belarus-1221.5. A machine with a diesel engine that meets Stage IIIb environmental requirements.

There are separate modifications of Belarus-1221 L, intended for use in forestry when transporting and loading wood, as well as when planting green spaces. Belarus-1221.2 “Tropic”, designed specifically for operation at elevated temperatures. It received a modified radiator with an additional ventilation system and a second fuel tank of +110 liters.

The BELARUS-1221.2 tractor is equipped with a 4-stroke in-line diesel engine D-260.2S produced by the Minsk Motor Plant. It is started by an electric starter system (24 V). The power unit is equipped with a 6-piston in-line fuel pump (injector with a five-hole nozzle) and a dry friction 2-disc clutch.

The motor is cooled by a closed liquid system (forced circulation), automatic regulation of the thermal regime is carried out using a viscous friction clutch. The oil is cooled in a special heat exchanger, which is built into the cylinder block (system capacity - 24 l). ICE lubrication is provided by a combined system, the volume of which is 22 liters (for the engine crankcase - 18 liters). The oil is cleaned by two filters: centrifugal and with a replaceable paper element. The D-260.2S power plant model is also equipped with a dry air cleaner; cartridges made of highly porous cardboard act as filter elements.

All modifications, with the exception of 1221.4, are equipped with engines from the Minsk Motor Plant. They are characterized by low consumption of fuel and lubricants and fully meet modern environmental requirements.
All MTZ-1221 have a mechanical gearbox. Gear shifting occurs using synchronizers: 4 steps when moving forward and 2 when moving backward. The advantage of this technique is changing speeds under load without disrupting torque and reducing power.
In modern modifications, the transmission has undergone a number of changes. The clutch on the main models is double-disc, closed with a rigid housing. The rear axle is equipped with wheel planetary gearboxes. The differential control has three modes: auto, on and off. The braking system is represented by dry three-disc brakes. In individual cases, it is possible to equip with multi-disc “wet” brakes mounted on the drive gear shafts.
Both bridges are leading in this model. They are equipped with planetary wheel gears. The rear axle and final drive axle shafts are reinforced, allowing the use of heavy attachments. The front axle is also a drive axle, which, in combination with wide front wheels, allows attachments to be mounted at the front of the machine, significantly expanding its functionality.
For mounting attachments, there are three pairs of hydraulic outlets and a rear three-point device. The hydraulic system offers two configuration options:
- two vertical cylinders built into the hydraulic receiver;
- autonomous horizontal power cylinder.
Of the additional equipment, the entire list of agricultural implements with a wide grip is suitable for the MTZ-1221.
Since the first release of the MTZ-1221, the tractor cabin has undergone changes. The interior has become more ergonomic, although the main controls remain in place. The advantage of the new machines is that the driver controls all functions without leaving the cab. This is how control is carried out over attachments, activation of the power take-off shaft, and hydraulic control. All buttons, levers and handles are within arm's reach and placed on the dashboard to accommodate forward and reverse movement. Power steering. The driver's safety system consists of seat belts and a reinforced cab frame. A hatch on the roof is provided as an emergency exit.

The Belarus 1221 model is characterized by a simple design, good assembly, good performance, and versatility. Based on the basic design, modifications have been created:
- MTZ-1221L is a forestry version for special work such as transporting wood, loading logs, and planting green spaces.
- Belarus-1221V.2 – with a reversible control station.
- MTZ-1221 T.2 - with a driven front axle, instead of a cabin there is an awning with heat-resistant windows.
- A car with a powerful 131.7 hp engine. — Belarus MTZ-1221.3.
- MTZ-1221.2 “tropic” - with an additional fuel tank and a tropical radiator.
- Modification with a modernized MTZ-1221.4 design, an environmentally friendly Tier II engine, a driven front axle.
- An agricultural machine with a modern design, Belarus MTZ-1221.5, is equipped with a 133 hp engine, environmentally friendly Stage IIIB standard.
The price of a tractor, depending on its technical condition and mileage, starts from 500 thousand rubles, the cost of a new machine is at least 2 million rubles. The assembly of agricultural machinery is also carried out at a number of Russian enterprises.

Features of operation
Like all brand equipment, the Belarus MTZ-1221 tractor is distinguished by a well-developed design and reasonable ease of operation and maintenance. High maintainability, affordable spare parts available through the dealer network, and efficiency – these are the main advantages of these tractor models.
The manufacturer offers owners the optional installation of mechanisms and devices that are not included in the basic configuration: front power take-off shaft, right-hand cab step, weights, reversible control station, air conditioning, multi-disc brakes in an oil bath, towing devices of various modifications, synchronized gearbox 24 /12, additional fuel tank, creeper.

Service
The tractor requires maintenance every shift or at least every 10 hours of operation. In the future, routine maintenance is performed after 125/250/500/1000/2000 engine hours. The brand of diesel fuel is chosen depending on climatic conditions. SAE15W-40 class oil is used as engine oil and for transmission in summer, SAE5W-40 in winter.
Major faults, repairs
Of the most common breakdowns, tractor owners note failure of the power take-off shaft. There may be problems with the engine, transmission, turbocharger, steering, and sometimes there is not enough traction on the front axle. The simple design of the Belarus MTZ-1221 tractor allows the operator to perform minor faults in the field with a set of conventional plumbing tools, without transporting the tractor to a stationary workshop.
