Motoblock Ural. Do-it-yourself modification options

In the 90s of the last century, owners of subsidiary plots, farmers, gardeners and summer residents working on the land had the opportunity to purchase means of small-scale labor mechanization.

One of these new products was the Ural walk-behind tractor. At a speed of 15 km/h, he towed a half-ton trailer, plowed the land, and cultivated vegetable gardens on 1 hectare of area.

Motoblock Ural

Few people guessed behind the name a defense engine-building enterprise based in the capital of Bashkiria, Ufa.

The walk-behind tractors included in the conversion program of engine manufacturers did not differ in design or wide range of functions, but they worked the land properly, were maintainable, and did not require special skills in operation and maintenance.

The UMZ 5V engine withstood heat and heavy loads; spare parts and consumables were not in short supply.

In 1998, the company began production of the heavy Agros walk-behind tractor, a more powerful and productive product with an expanded set of functions and a set of attachments for it. Production of Urals was discontinued.

The Ural walk-behind tractor was developed back in the 90s in the Russian Federation and remains popular among farmers to this day.
During the design, all details were taken into account, thanks to which Ural walk-behind tractors have excellent technical characteristics. With the rapid development of technology, this agricultural technique is still popular among landowners. An excellent alternative to a rake and shovel, as well as significant savings in time and effort when plowing the soil. Moreover, this type of agricultural machinery does not require special skills in operation; minor damage can be easily repaired right on the spot using simple pliers and pliers.

If necessary, spare parts for the Ural walk-behind tractor are open for free sale either in specialized agricultural equipment stores, or you can order from the manufacturer in the city of Bashkiria.

Distinctive advantages:

  • The Ural UMZ walk-behind tractor, although made by Chinese manufacturers, is distinguished by a good margin of safety and an almost complete absence of serious breakdowns;
  • These are four-stroke air-cooled engines;
  • The motor of the Ural walk-behind tractor consumes fuel economically, despite weather and climatic conditions;
  • The Chinese Ural walk-behind tractor requires virtually no repairs, has high power and is capable of processing almost any soil.

Detailed engine repair instructions for the Ural walk-behind tractor are included.

How to replace a belt in a cultivator

So the belt has been purchased, let's start replacing it. By the way, here is the marking of the purchased belt.

Belt marking

But the old belt looks so tattered, it’s not very visible in the photo, but it’s ready to break.

Since the belt is not very tight and this is its normal state until the gear lever is pressed, you can simply pull it off the large wheel by hand.

Carefully tighten the belt.

Now, since the guide may interfere with complete removal of the belt, you will need to loosen one upper bolt and completely unscrew the lower one. This will give us the opportunity to easily remove the old belt and install the new belt. Like the picture below.

First we put the new belt on the small pulley, then we tighten the damper bolts, so the belt will not interfere much with this, and only after that we put the belt on the large pulley. Let's start from the top.

Similar to a chain on a bicycle, install a new belt.

Then, turning the wheel slightly, carefully so that your fingers do not get under the belt, we finally install it.

The belt is now installed, you can check and fasten the cultivator cover in place.

During work, one detail appeared: periodically, under the cultivator cover, after switching the speed off, a terrible hum began. Having removed the casing again, it was noticed that the belt at times resonated and vibrated strongly. Here's how we managed to capture it in the photo.

The belt vibrated and made a terrible noise.

To eliminate this, you need to slightly press the upper plate of the damper towards the bottom, it bends easily, after which the vibration stops.

By pressing the sedative, the problem was completely resolved.

Ural walk-behind tractor with zid engine

The Ural motor-cultivator with a similar engine is started from a cord that is wound on a pulley. You can start it using the crank, but this will require much more force. This is due to the fact that the crankshaft passes through the gearbox. The unit is a four-stroke single-cylinder engine that runs on gasoline and is designed for installation on light self-propelled agricultural equipment.

You can see the walk-behind tractor in more detail in the photo or video. The technical characteristics of the Ural walk-behind tractor provide a guarantee of up to 2000 hours of operation for one year if the work is carried out in accordance with all operating rules.

Operating at higher speeds

Expensive modifications of walk-behind tractors are equipped with several speeds. The designated function allows you to optimize the procedure for sowing, harvesting or cultivating a field. But on the other hand, the operation of walk-behind tractors largely directly depends on the quality of the drive belt. The first thing to remember is that frequent gear shifting does not have the best effect on the operation of the unit. For this reason, you should avoid using cheap and sometimes low-quality products.

Replacing the engine on a Ural walk-behind tractor with a Chinese one - video

Specifications

According to the operating instructions for the Ural walk-behind tractor, the product consists of a frame made of steel profile. The frame is equipped with a power unit, a clutch mechanism and an additional 2-speed gearbox. The power unit is installed through rubber shock absorbers that reduce vibration on the controls.

For movement, 2 wheels are used. The walk-behind tractor uses solid rubber tires with a diameter of 430 mm and a width of 110 mm. Fixed track width - 540 mm. The walk-behind tractor is controlled by handles attached to the frame. The handles are used to turn, change engine speed and change gears. The steering can be adjusted depending on the height of the operator. A bar with holes is used for adjustment.

  • length - 1880 mm;
  • width - 690 mm;
  • height - 1280 mm.

On the front of the frame there is a pin used for installing attachments. The pin is housed in a steel housing bolted to the cross member. There are 2 holes in the body of the pin through which attachments are secured. On the rear cross member there is a bracket designed for installing towed equipment.

The engine installed on the walk-behind tractor requires regular maintenance with partial or complete disassembly. After 250 hours of operation, the valves need to be ground in and adjusted. There are marks on the gears to set the valve timing. Adjustment of the gap between the pushers and valves is carried out using a special screw located at the end of the pusher.

The manufacturer allows a variation in the length and height of products within 50 mm, and in width - within 20 mm. The weight of the equipped device is 120 kg, the weight of the towed trailer is 350 kg. The maximum speed is 11.5 km/h. For the fastest possible movement, a combination of the highest gear in the engine and higher speed in the additional gearbox is used.

Replacement and adjustment

The flexible belt drive element on the walk-behind tractor can be replaced and adjusted independently.

The V-belt drive reliably transmits the force from the motor, but over time the belt wears out, cracks and tears form on it.

The task of changing it appears. This can be done in special service centers. This is the most correct choice, but it will not be cheap. You can carry out the replacement yourself, and if you have ever repaired your car, you have experience working with equipment.

Removing the used flexible element

First of all, remove the plastic safety cover by unscrewing the fixing nuts. Afterwards, the accessory belt is removed by relaxing the tension between the pulley (friction wheel) of the gearbox and the motor.

Some modifications have specialized devices for tensioning and loosening belts. But usually walk-behind tractors do not have this mechanism. To loosen the tension of the drive belt, loosen the motor fixing nuts (4 pieces) and move it to the right. Then we remove the belt. Don’t forget, you can only move the motor to the right (to the left) to tighten (loosen) the product within 20 millimeters.

Ural with UMZ-5V engine

The engine of the Ural UMZ-5V walk-behind tractor is a 4-stroke, 1-cylinder gasoline unit with a volume of 475 cm³. The motor was originally created for use on self-propelled agricultural machinery and stationary installations. The power unit develops a power of 4.5 liters. With. at 2000 rpm. The plant allows a short-term increase in power up to 5 hp. With. by increasing the speed.

Long-term operation at high power is not allowed, as it leads to overheating.

The engine is equipped with an air cooling system. To cool the engine, a fan is used that forces air into a casing located around the cylinder and head. When operating a walk-behind tractor, it is necessary to regularly inspect and clean the cooling fins from dust and oil. Accumulated dust impairs heat transfer and causes local overheating, which leads to increased engine wear.

The motor is equipped with an automatic speed controller. For this, a centrifugal mechanism is used, which does not allow a rotation speed of more than 2350 rpm. When the speed is exceeded, the throttle valve shifts, which leads to a drop in rotation speed. The engine manufacturer prohibits self-adjustment of the rev limiter, as well as its use to control the speed.

The gas distribution system consists of 2 lower valves. Because of this, the engine has a low compression ratio of 6 units. The engine uses automobile gasoline A-76 (A-80) as fuel. The fuel supply is located in a tank located above the engine carburetor; the liquid is supplied by gravity. The fuel reserve in the tank is 6 liters, which provides an operating time of up to 4-4.5 hours. Operating time depends on the condition of the engine and the nature of the tasks performed.

The engine of the Ural walk-behind tractor is equipped with a 2-speed gearbox with reduction gears. The first speed reduces the rotation speed by 6 times and is used to perform work with a high coefficient of resistance (for example, plowing virgin soil). The second speed reduces the speed by 2.91 times and is used for operating the product with a trailer or when plowing soft soil. Switching the speeds of the UMB-K Ural walk-behind tractor according to the instructions is carried out with the engine not running.

The engine is started with a cord that is wound around the flywheel. Before starting, it is necessary to set the crankshaft to the compression end position. Starting the engine is permitted in 1st or 2nd gear of the motor gearbox.

The engine output shaft is equipped with a 2-ribbed pulley designed to transmit torque to an additional gearbox and to drive attachments. On the fan side there is a second pulley used to drive attachments that require increased rotation speed of the working parts. The clutch mechanism consists of belts and tension rollers.

According to the repair instructions, the transmission crankcase of a walk-behind tractor with a UMZ-5V engine is filled with 1.5 liters of transmission oil. The substance is poured through a hole closed with a plastic stopper.

The standard set of attachments for the walk-behind tractor included a cultivator. To transport cargo weighing up to 350 kg, a 2-wheel TOP-350/350M trolley was used. When using a single-body plow, the installation of an adapter device is required, which is attached to the frame. The plow can be used in conjunction with metal wheels equipped with lugs. A mounted potato digger is used in conjunction with a plow.

How to replace drive belts on Neva MB-1 and MB-2 walk-behind tractors: step-by-step instructions

Based on the differences in the location of the belts on these two walk-behind tractors, we will consider the processes separately.

For Neva MB-1:

  1. disconnect the shield by unscrewing 2 bolt ties and removing the protective casing from the gear pulley;
  2. do not completely unscrew the connection of the guide pulley;
  3. smoothly remove the reverse belt;
  4. loosen the ties, move the limiter pins and remove the front transmission belt;
  5. We take new serviceable belts and apply them to the grooves of the required pulleys. After this, we secure them with the bolts that were removed in the previous stages.

"Neva" MB-2:

  1. disconnect the shield and casing;
  2. be sure to remove the spring that provides tension;
  3. unscrew the screw fasteners and unscrew the stops that hold the belt on the motor pulley. Before moving on to the next step, you need to make sure that the grooves of the motor shaft and gearbox are in the same plane. According to instrumental measurements, the non-flatness between them should not go beyond 0.01 cm;
  4. if necessary, adjust the pulleys. The easiest way to do this is to move the motor in a longitudinal plane;
  5. we adjust the tension pulley by adding or removing an element located between the disk and the bracket;
  6. install a serviceable belt for the Neva MB-2 walk-behind tractor, starting from the gearbox.

Further assembly of the V-belt mechanism is carried out in the reverse order of the disassembly process. An important point that users often miss is the discrepancy in the range between the protective casing and the belt accessory. According to the technical documentation, it should be at the level of 2-3 mm.

Another fact is also important. If there are 2 belts installed on the walk-behind tractor, but only one of them is worn out, both drives must be replaced. If this is not done, the newly installed cord will experience more loads than the old one and will wear out ahead of schedule.

Ural with ZiD engine

Small batches of walk-behind tractors were equipped with a ZiD-4.5 power unit. The design of the motor is not very different from the UMZ-5V. The crankshaft contains a pulley and a sprocket for driving the chain. The pulley is located on the flywheel side, the chain drive is located on the gearbox side. The chain drive is used to drive stationary installations. The engine is lubricated by splashing; oil is supplied by a plunger pump from a sump that holds 1.5 liters of liquid.
