The inglorious end of the T-500 project: what is behind the disappearance of the latest Russian aircraft without a trace

Small civil aviation in Russia, covering vast territories of the country, is not in the best condition today. The regions are still using outdated maize planes, and there are not enough new aircraft. To fill this gap, Rostec, in cooperation with other enterprises, developed the single-seat low-wing T-500. The aircraft has already been approved for serial production, and in May 2022, the head of Rostec, Sergei Chemezov, launched the construction of production for the T-500 in Tatarstan.

The T-500 bulldozer is a powerful and maneuverable machine, capable of making a sharp turn in any direction while standing still. It sometimes surpasses foreign analogues in performance, and its price is much more attractive.

Bulldozer T-500

This bulldozer is produced at the tractor plant in Cheboksary, and the first developments began in the seventies of the last century, and in 1991, the T-500 bulldozer-ripper was awarded a diploma in Verona from an exhibition representing road and construction equipment. Now the model has received a new name - T-35.01.

Thanks to the modular design of all crawler bulldozer systems, components and parts, maintenance and repair of the machine are simplified as much as possible. After all, you can immediately remove the entire module, replacing it if necessary. Smooth and fast running, unpretentiousness (the ability to work at plus 50 and minus 50 degrees) make the unit very popular in many industries. With its help, they perform the most complex and difficult excavation work, including rocky, frozen and compacted soils. It is used in open-pit mining of rocks, in road construction, in hydraulic engineering and reclamation work, and in the search for minerals. It also finds application in the oil and gas industry. Device

Engine

The twelve-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine YaMZ-850.10 with a right camber angle has liquid cooling and direct fuel injection. It is manufactured by Avtodiesel JSC from Yaroslavl, has a power of 480 horsepower and is equipped with a turbocharger.

The engine cylinders are arranged in the shape of the letter “V”, and to start it in cold weather, it is possible to install a pre-start heater. The engine compartment is located in front of the cabin.

Transmission

The design of the hydromechanical transmission includes a hydraulic transformer (stepless variable), which is used to adjust the torque.
The final drive is of a two-stage type, with each side being adjusted separately. The planetary gearbox has three stages; it allows you to move at one of three speeds, both forward and backward. The gearbox splits the power flow to the drive wheels in two. Thanks to this, the bulldozer can easily turn while standing still. During a turn, the tracks work, moving in different directions.

Chassis

The running system with a three-point semi-rigid suspension includes two bogies with tracks located on the side transmission axle.
The track rollers are equipped with movable DUO-CONE seals. There is a hydraulic mechanism for automatically tensioning the tracks, made together with the release mechanism. Lubrication of all hinges is one-time use; it lasts for the entire life of the bulldozer. Thanks to such design features, the running of the bulldozer tracks is smooth and soft, and during operation it exhibits good stability.

Hydraulics

To control the attachments (which are carried out from the cabin), a hydraulic system is used, consisting of hydraulic cylinders for raising and lowering the blade, turning it, as well as adjusting the angle of inclination of the ripper, its lowering and raising.

Electrical equipment

Electrical appliances are powered by four rechargeable batteries (12 V each). The on-board voltage is 24 V, there is a starting power socket with this voltage. The current in the alternator is 75 A.

The cabin has a lamp, a cigarette lighter, a starter, and an electric hour meter. For lighting, three headlights are used at the rear, three at the front, and three on the roof.

Equipment

Bulldozer-ripper equipment includes a parallelogram ripper with one tooth, as well as a hemispherical blade with a transverse hydraulic distortion, which cannot be rotated, but can change the angle of soil cutting. The tilt of the ripper can be changed.

Operator's cabin

The cabin is all-metal, single. It is located on rubber shock absorbers, which helps dampen vibrations and shocks, thereby increasing driver comfort. Autonomous ventilation and heating are the key to operation in any weather. If you have to work in the tropics, it is possible to install an air conditioner. Double glass provides heat retention and noise protection. Additionally, if necessary, gratings and racks are installed to prevent overturning.

The transmission is hydromechanical and consists of a six-shaft, three-speed, fully reversible, double-sided gearbox with constant clutch helical gears, hydraulically pressed disk clutches for gears and a reverse mechanism, a system of hydraulically controlled reverse stop brakes for each side, structurally combined in one autonomous gearbox unit. The gearbox provides a bifurcation of the power flow to the drive wheels, which allows you to turn the tractor on the spot due to different directions of movement of the tracks.

The semi-rigid running system of the T-500 bulldozer of the Cheboksary tractor plant ChZPT consists of two tracked bogies pumped on the axles of the final drives. Plant in a special economic zone

The new machine for small civil aviation is the result of the joint work of several enterprises. The T-500 is based on the development of Kazan, which has been creating agricultural aircraft since the beginning of the 2000s. In 2022, as part of the implementation of the strategy to increase the share of civilian products, Rostec joined the project, namely the Obninsk enterprise “Technology” named after. A.G. Romashina. Tekhnologiya's extensive experience in working with composite materials made it possible to create a unique airframe for the aircraft. The project will be managed by Aeropraktika LLC, a subsidiary of ONPP Tekhnologiya. The volume of investment in the project will be 2.5 billion rubles.

An aircraft assembly plant will be created specifically for the production of the T-500 in the Innopolis special economic zone in Tatarstan. Here, by 2022, a production and two assembly buildings, a plant administration, a painting hangar, a fuel and lubricants warehouse, a finishing hangar, a command and control tower and a 1.5 km long runway will be built. It is planned that the enterprise will be able to produce up to 100 aircraft per year.

The new enterprise will assemble T-500 aircraft and other aircraft based on this model, including two-seat and unmanned versions. The experimental aviation airfield will allow overflights and test flights of manufactured equipment in close proximity to production shops. Innopolis residents will develop software products for the project.

The T-500 aircraft is part of the field aviation complex for agriculture (PAK SKh), which, in addition to it, includes a ground-based refueling complex. The cost of the aircraft in serial production is estimated at 12 million rubles, together with the tanker - up to 13 million. Not only farmers are interested in unpretentious and economical machines. Such an aircraft is needed by the Ministry of Emergency Situations, forest protection, environmental and other services, especially since the specialization of machines in the T-500 line will only expand.

The first batch of ten aircraft is already ready to be sent to the first operator - Bashkir Aviation. The T-500 aircraft has excellent export potential, because it is approximately three times cheaper than its foreign counterparts. Customers from Portugal and Angola have already shown interest in the car.
