General information/history of KrAZ 255
The KrAZ-255 is a popular Soviet all-terrain truck with a six-by-six wheel arrangement, nicknamed “bast shoe”, “lunokhod” and “lapotnik”. Its production started in 1967 at the Kremenchug Automobile Plant. The model was discontinued in 1993.
The basis for the creation of the KrAZ-255 was the KrAZ-214. The car got its general layout from him.
Among the key differences are wide-profile tires equipped with a pressure regulation system, and a more economical and powerful YaMZ-238 engine. The need to modernize the KrAZ-214 arose in the mid-60s. The truck, quite acceptable for its time, began to lose to its competitors in terms of technical parameters.
As a result, a new all-wheel drive heavy truck appeared. Externally, the KrAZ-255 was practically no different from its predecessor.
In 1969, the model acquired an updated front lighting design. The turn signals and headlights were installed in rectangular metal boxes. Previously, the headlights were located separately from the turn signals.
The KrAZ-255 was a truly iconic vehicle for the entire Soviet truck market. The model became a symbol of the Kremenchug Automobile Plant and one of the most widespread modifications of equipment in the 1970-1980s.
The tractor was used to transport personnel and cargo off-road and on-road and was a leader in the rating of reliability and technical aesthetics. At a time when national economic facilities and the army needed a three-axle truck with high cross-country ability, capable of traveling on type I and II roads, the creation of the KrAZ-255 was necessary. The increased cross-country ability of the model was ensured by a single-wheel tire, permanent all-wheel drive, a tire compression adjustment function and small overhangs.
The equipment went through many tests and worked in extreme conditions, but very rarely failed. The number of KrAZ-255 models produced was 25% of the total number produced at the plant. Low cost, excellent maneuverability, maintainability and unpretentiousness ensured the car's high popularity in African and Asian countries. The Kremenchug plant exported up to 85% of trucks.

Modifications
There were several modifications of the KrAZ-255 truck:
- The KrAZ-255B became the base vehicle with a chassis or a platform that did not receive a chassis. Production of the truck started in 1967. It was intended for towing and transporting trailers and cargo over various terrain. The KrAZ-255B chassis was actively used for the installation of drilling rigs, pile driving machines, excavators, cementing units and other types of equipment;
- KrAZ-255B1 – version with separate brake drive. Its production began in 1979;
- KrAZ-255V is a truck tractor used for towing semi-trailers weighing 26 tons on paved roads and 18 tons on any roads;
- KrAZ-255D – modification with an active semi-trailer MMZ-881;

The KrAZ-255 vehicle is considered a large-sized vehicle. The length of the truck is 8645 mm, height – 2940 mm (with awning – 3175 mm), width – 2750 mm, wheelbase – 4600 mm. In this case, the turning radius of the equipment is 14200 mm. Thanks to a powerful engine and ground clearance of 360 mm, the tractor can overcome a ford with a depth of 1000 mm and a rise of 58%.

Device
Externally, the KrAZ-255 looks rather unpretentious. The wooden cabin, which seats three, is lined with steel and is located behind the engine. The instrument panel is simplified as much as possible and has a small number of primitive indicators and mechanisms. In 1969, the appearance of the truck changed somewhat. The front part received a new lighting system mounted in a single rectangular body. Also in the cabin were windshield washers, an updated seat with a spring suspension, a set of additional settings and a hydraulic shock absorber, a panoramic glass heater, a removable sleeping bed and a heating system. The driver's seat became sprung and was adjusted for height and weight.
The body of the KrAZ-255 is made in the form of a metal cargo platform with a lattice side that opens at the rear, arches, side folding seats and an awning.
The convenience of controlling the tractor is added by the gearbox levers, axle differential, winch mechanism and hand brake installed in the cab.
