Mercedes Actros is the flagship family of truck tractors and heavy-duty vehicles, including models with a gross vehicle weight of 18,000-41,000 kg. Currently, the family is represented by several modifications of tractors (wheel configurations 4 by 2, 4 by 4, 6 by 2, 6 by 4) and 2 versions of the chassis (wheel configurations 4 by 2, 6 by 2). The main assembly plant for Mercedes Actros models is located in Wert am Rhein.

A key feature of these cars is the Telligent electronic system, which collects information from sensors installed on various components of the car in real time. The system allows you to monitor equipment wear, brake and transmission operation, and monitor loads. Its use increases service intervals to 150,000 km. The Mercedes Actros family is characterized by German quality. The manufacturer provides a 3-year or 450,000 km warranty on models in this line.

Dump trucks, presented by a well-known German automaker, are used to transport bulk materials and construction materials. The company does not produce quarry vehicles. Traditional Mercedes-Benz flatbed dump trucks are in great demand among construction and road repair companies. Through their use, sand, crushed stone soil, coal and other materials are transported.

The body part of the vehicle with rear unloading is equipped with front sides and a special visor. The folding side greatly facilitates the unloading process. The hydraulic body lifting system makes unloading as smooth as possible.

The load redistribution system ensures that the pressure exerted on the frame will be distributed evenly.

Dump trucks of this brand are distinguished by a rich level of equipment. Thus, if necessary, you can equip the vehicle with a fuel heating system, thanks to which the operation of the dump truck in the winter season will not be difficult.

The problematic aspects of such dump trucks include the minimum thickness of the side members - only 7.5 mm. However, concerns about possible problems with this element are unfounded. The high profile height of the side members, the sufficient width of the shelves and the use of high-quality steel ensure that the platform can withstand even the highest loads. A disadvantage of Mercedes-Benz dump trucks can be considered the high sensitivity of the component units to the fuel mixture used.

Miscalculations or shortcomings?

From the first minutes of driving the Actros Bau, you want to praise and praise the car, but this only lasts until the first climb. Frozen on a hillock waiting for a window on the main road, I was unpleasantly surprised at how short the response time of the so-called anti-rollback system was. The Mercedes people told me about three seconds, during which when you press the brake pedal and remove your foot from it, the operating pressure is maintained in the line. In fact, the automatic assistance lasted no more than a second. And therefore, when entering the main road from a steep junction, I allowed a slight roll back. In a construction career this would not make any difference. But we are not in a career!

The engine spins up smoothly and obediently, and the new gearbox does not create any shocks. When accelerating, the tachometer needle usually smoothly rises up and rapidly bows down, counting gear by gear. But already in cruising mode, 50 km/h, which is allowed for a populated area, the revs seem low. I share my thoughts with the instructor, and he explains: it’s all about optimizing the transmission. Thanks to the new, so-called long gear ratios of the drive axle, it was possible to reduce the marching speed. The torque has increased, and while maintaining driving characteristics, fuel consumption has decreased.

The smooth ride of a loaded dump truck is excellent. Only when moving without tension, an extraneous unpleasant metallic sound is heard from under the rear trolley. Perhaps the test car has already suffered from the unprofessionalism of the drivers behind the wheel. Or maybe, due to intensive use with maximum load, some piece of hardware capitulated. In any case, this “solo” will not go unnoticed.

At the same time, let's not forget about the advantages of air suspension with the Telligent electronic level control system, which, alas, our ward was not equipped with. By the way, the air suspension control panel is now equipped with new lighting. Presumably, white LEDs are clearly visible against the black background of the display at night. But since the test took place during the day, I could not be happy with the efficiency of LED lamps even on other machines.

There are no complaints about the new spherical mirrors: they show everything the driver needs for safe maneuvers. I can’t judge the resistance of plastic fairings to scratches, and is this really so important for someone who deals with sand, gravel and crushed stone every day?..

The GROVE GMK 5130-3 all-terrain crane is installed on a five-axle chassis with a 10x6x10 wheel arrangement, equipped with an eight-cylinder diesel engine produced by the German automotive giant Mercedes-Benz. Additional functions: switching from first to reverse gear, Kickdown function and accelerated reverse gears make control as easy as possible.

This scheme today is one of the rarest for construction sector trucks with a gross weight of more than 18 tons. At least this statement is true for seven European countries.

For example, in France, the segment of cars with an 8x4 wheel arrangement is twice as large as the segment of 6x4 trucks, and layouts like 8x6 or 8x8 are generally exotic there. In Italy, the dominance of 8x4 is so obvious that other sectors simply pale in comparison, and 6x6 is absent as a class. In the UK, 8x4 “builders” are also in high esteem, but 8x6 and 8x8 are actually not represented at all. Even in the Netherlands, where there is no discrimination against heavy dump trucks and concrete mixers, there are more 8x4 trucks than vehicles of other drive formulas (except 4x2) combined. By the way, the Netherlands is in first place in the number of 8x8/4 dump trucks.

In Belgium, the number of heavy trucks with two drive axles with a four-axle design is identical to the number of 6x4 vehicles, and this is against the backdrop of a modest share of 6x6 and an almost insignificant layer of 8x6 and 8x8. In Spain and Germany the picture is symmetrical: there the 8x4, 6x4 and 6x6 segments are equal in size, but the 8x8 form a small layer. It is not surprising that the Actros 4148 AK (8×8/4) is not yet certified in Russia.

In our country, Arocs was shown at the STT-2016 construction exhibition, but has not yet been offered, since the engines met Euro-6 standards that are not relevant in our country. It was only known that the newcomer was about 10% more expensive than the analogue Actros MP3, which is produced in Russia, which means that the Arocs 8x4 could cost 140 thousand euros in our country.

But next year, the Daimler KAMAZ RUS JV is planning a large-scale launch of the current Mercedes SFTP series on our market - and these are Actros MP4 and Arocs already in Euro-5 versions. Naturally, they will be assembled in Naberezhnye Chelny, and then equipped with cabins, for the production of which a plant is being built there. So, I think we’ll still ride on Arocskavators!
