BCM-120.2 and BCM-120.1 “Istra” dump trucks on Mercedes-Benz Actros 3341K and 3336K chassis

Mercedes-Benz Actros is a line of trucks from the German concern Mercedes that is familiar and loved on Russian roads. Despite the fact that today tractor units for the Russian market are assembled at the Daimler Kamaz Rus base, the main spare parts are supplied from Germany.

For the Mercedes-Benz Actros 3341 model, for example, the “skeleton” of the cabin and some of its components come from Europe, which are already assembled at the Russian plant.

Review of the Mercedes dump truck model range - characteristics of Atego and Axor trucks

The Atego series includes 3 types of vehicles: a truck with all-wheel drive, a Mercedes 6*6 dump truck with a lifting body, and also a variation with unloading on 3 sides. In its diversity, the Atego series equipment is superior to Vario cars. The weight of Atego dump trucks varies from 7.5 to 16 tons. Cars in this series are equipped with diesel engines with power from 156 to 286 liters per second, and the maximum torque can reach 1120 N•m. Such a high torque is an undeniable advantage of dump trucks in this series and guarantees the necessary traction, as well as significant fuel savings. In addition, cars are equipped with the most powerful engines of 256 and 286 l/s. 9-speed gearbox.

Dump trucks of this series can differ in the following parameters: engine characteristics - 6 or 7 liter engines, the power of which can vary from 238 to 326 liters per second. A 12 liter engine option is also available, with a power of 428 liters per second. In terms of wheelbase drive, cars are manufactured in an 8x4 or 6x4 configuration. In terms of weight, the basic equipment ranges from 18 to 32 tons. Based on the number of axles, dump trucks are divided into 2 and 4 axle. Also, cars of the Axor series can be equipped with various types of gearboxes: 6-speed gearbox (for an engine of 238 l/s), 9-speed (for engines of 256 l/s), 16-speed (designed for cars with a power of 286 l/s).

Specifications

The Mercedes-Benz Actros 3341 moves well in urban environments, on highways, and in difficult terrain (on dirt roads). It is the technical equipment that allows, under such unstable and high loads, to combine optimal carrying capacity and optimal costs for cargo transportation, including fuel consumption.

  • Depending on the configuration, the maximum load capacity of the Actros 3341 can reach almost 30 tons.
  • The 6x6 wheel arrangement allows the dump truck to work in quarries and other difficult areas.
  • The new 2022 models are equipped with engines with Euro 5 environmental friendliness, which is achieved thanks to the new Blue Tec technology. The system also reduces the load on the engine, making it more suitable for use in urban environments and reduces fuel consumption even under high loads.
  • Most dump trucks come with a manual transmission, which is considered more economical; there is also a modification with a 12-speed automatic transmission and the Power Shift off road system, which significantly increases the maneuverability of the truck.
  • The dump truck is equipped with an anti-rollback function, which makes it easier to start on inclines.
  • The Telligent automatic system “monitors” the operation of the engine, gearbox and brakes, and thanks to it the mechanisms wear out less, which allows for maintenance after approximately 120 thousand kilometers.

A dump truck is, first of all, cross-country ability. Actros 3341 has high ground clearance, which allows you to overcome various sections of the road, the all-wheel drive chassis will “pull out” in difficult conditions, and the steel protection on the radiator will not allow dirt and stones to get into the engine compartment.

In the world of freight transportation, dump trucks occupy a special place. This type of heavy-duty trucks may have a lower carrying capacity than long-haul tractors, but at the same time be much more powerful than them. This is due to working conditions: often these are construction sites, objects with poor traffic. And if the tractor itself can “pass” in such terrain, then in order to overcome such obstacles with several tens of tons, real “character” and power under the hood are needed.

"Aktros" - a pioneer

Mercedes-Benz Trucks was the first to massively order new Istra bodies for its trucks, and we were the first to take such an Actros dump truck for a familiarization test. We needed the second truck for comparison, so it has a traditional wheelbase of 3900 mm and an old-style body, but with an all-wheel drive transmission.

The comparative photographs clearly show how the length of the short-wheelbase dump truck has been noticeably reduced, with virtually no damage to the volume of the body. At the same time, the parameters of the geometric cross-country ability of a short-wheelbase vehicle correspond to, and in some cases even exceed, the parameters of an all-wheel drive long-wheelbase truck. If we take into account that the construction "Actros" has inter-axle and inter-wheel locks, then the cross-country ability of such a vehicle is approaching that of a more complex and heavier all-wheel drive version (its curb weight is one ton more, and the load capacity is correspondingly the same amount less). At the same time, a 6x6 dump truck is forced to install a more powerful engine, which in turn affects fuel consumption. In all respects, it turns out that the new short-wheelbase dump truck with wheels of increased diameter is superior to more traditional designs.

The installation of larger diameter wheels also had a positive effect on... driver comfort! I noticed that when driving over certain uneven surfaces (joints of reinforced concrete slabs) on large wheels the car shakes less, and the four-point cab suspension and driver's seat with air suspension make it possible not to notice such obstacles on the road.

The cabin itself, even despite the engine hood protruding inward, is spacious and comfortable, with many pleasant little things such as a heated driver’s seat and mirrors, electric windows, adjustable rear-view mirrors, etc. The radio with CD is conveniently located “Mercedes style” - a player and a mandatory tachograph from next year - above the windshield in front of the driver. On the rear wall of the cabin there are spacious pockets for various items. But Mercedes drivers have nowhere to rest - there are no sleeping places in the short day cabs.

Mercedes-Benz dump trucks

The creation of dump trucks of the famous German brand is carried out by a division of the main concern Daimler AG - Daimler Truck Group. The company specializes in the production of trucks and various construction equipment, presented in the form of Actros, Atego and Axor dump trucks.

Atego models are characterized by compact dimensions, thanks to which dump trucks can unload materials in a limited area. All-wheel drive models are equipped with a pre-lift option. A significant advantage of Atego dump trucks is the possibility of three-way unloading.

Actros dump trucks have a higher load capacity. They are equipped with a powerful power unit and a convenient gearbox, which, when working in tandem, guarantee maximum fuel efficiency. Such models are actively used in construction.

The Axor family of dump trucks has been produced since 2001. The year 2004 was marked by the release of a restyled version of the vehicle. The second generation of dump trucks was presented to the general public two years after this event.

Purpose

Dump trucks, presented by a well-known German automaker, are used to transport bulk materials and construction materials. The company does not produce quarry vehicles. Traditional Mercedes-Benz flatbed dump trucks are in great demand among construction and road repair companies. Through their use, sand, crushed stone soil, coal and other materials are transported.

Advantages and disadvantages

The body part of the vehicle with rear unloading is equipped with front sides and a special visor. The folding side greatly facilitates the unloading process. The hydraulic body lifting system makes unloading as smooth as possible.

Of the main advantages of such dump trucks, the following points should be noted:

  • sufficient performance;
  • high maintainability;
  • reliability;
  • multifunctionality;
  • efficiency;
  • comfort.

The efficiency of the vehicle is determined by the installation of a six-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection, the volume of which is 12 liters. The power unit is paired with a sixteen-speed gearbox. The volume of Mercedes dump truck bodies is up to 20 m3.

The load redistribution system ensures that the pressure exerted on the frame will be distributed evenly.

Dump trucks of this brand are distinguished by a rich level of equipment. Thus, if necessary, you can equip the vehicle with a fuel heating system, thanks to which the operation of the dump truck in the winter season will not be difficult.

The problematic aspects of such dump trucks include the minimum thickness of the side members - only 7.5 mm. However, concerns about possible problems with this element are unfounded. The high profile height of the side members, the sufficient width of the shelves and the use of high-quality steel ensure that the platform can withstand even the highest loads. A disadvantage of Mercedes-Benz dump trucks can be considered the high sensitivity of the component units to the fuel mixture used.
