The gearbox (Fig. 1) has four forward gears and one reverse gear.

The gearbox uses constant mesh gears in second, third and fourth gears. In the third and fourth gears, an inertial type synchronizer is installed, consisting of a sliding clutch and hub. two blocking tracks and three crackers, pressed to the coupling by two spring rings. To increase rigidity and improve the accuracy of installation of the gear rings, the intermediate shaft is made one-piece in the form of a block of four gears. In addition, to obtain smooth engagement and silent operation of the gearbox, the constant mesh gears are made with helical teeth.

The gearboxes of the GAZ-66 and GAZ-66-02 cars differ from the gearbox of the GAZ-53A car in the design of the rear cover (there are no speedometer drive gears, which are installed in the transfer case). In addition, the gearbox housing of the GAZ-66-02 car has a more precise tolerance on the size from the axis of the intermediate shaft gear block to the mating plane of the hatch on which the power take-off is installed.

How to change gears if the engine is behind you? After all, GAZ 66 is not a very good example to follow. There are solutions, and very simple ones.

The modern buggy layout provides for the location of the power unit (often from front-wheel drive cars) behind the driver, and it becomes necessary to change the gear shift drive, since the gearbox rod is directed backwards. The topic provides options for solving this problem for widely used VAZ units (8,9,10 families), ZAZ, Moskvich-2141.

One of the participants implemented the option of remaking the gearbox of the VAZ-08 power unit by moving the gear shift rod to the front wall of the gearbox. The method requires more complex metalworking and welding work in an argon environment. Has some advantages. It is possible to use jet thrust for a more rigid connection between the gearshift lever and the gearbox. The thrust is shorter, which should also contribute to smooth shifting.

In power units that use a ZAZ gearbox, due to the gearbox being rotated 180 degrees and to maintain the gear shift pattern, a different design is used.

In this case, it is necessary to move the attachment point of the gear selector rod above the support of the gear selector lever (in ZAZs it is lower), and repeat the design used on front-wheel drive VAZs.

The ends of two cables are processed in this way.

Interior tuning

The original cabin of the GAZ 66 is not very suitable for a comfortable ride; during development, the car was considered more as an army all-terrain vehicle. And all the efforts of the designers were aimed at improving the technical characteristics of the vehicle.

Since the engine and gearbox are located practically in the cabin (only everything is covered with a factory cover), the GAZ 66 cabin is quite noisy. You can try to somehow reduce the noise level by using soundproofing material.

The standard seats in the 66's cabin are not particularly comfortable, and they are not very suitable for long trips. You can install seats from a modern passenger car. Of course, the mounts will need to be reworked, but convenience is more important than the time and money spent. Aesthetics are not as important as ride comfort. There is little point in upgrading an onboard GAZ 66 vehicle, but an army van like KUNG represents a wide field of activity for tuning. Now “Shishigs” are often bought by hunters and fishermen, and lovers of automobile tourism. The GAZ 66 van is simply great for long journeys and overnight stays in nature. With certain modifications to the KUNG car, you can almost live in it.

The GAZ 66 cabin is subject to a wide variety of tuning. Thanks to deep modernization, the Sixty-sixth can be used to create a homemade vehicle that looks like a Hummer, but certainly not a Soviet-made all-terrain vehicle. This vehicle is called the Partizan all-terrain vehicle and is obtained through a global modification of the body.

To obtain a Russian Hummer, you need two original 66 cabs, but you have to make the rest of the body parts yourself. The front part of one cabin is cut off, the back part of the other. Cabin parts are welded together. The result is a spacious interior with four doors.

But this is only half of the whole rework. The cabin is moved back, and a new bodywork is installed around the engine - wings, hood, sidewalls. The engine and gearbox are also shifted back, the center of gravity is transferred to the central part of the frame. It becomes more convenient to drive the car - the gearbox and transfer case levers are no longer located somewhere far behind. The advantages of such modernization include, first of all, the spectacular appearance of the homemade product. But it’s hard to say anything about the cross-country ability of such a miracle. Most likely, the modification will not help improve the technical characteristics of the all-terrain vehicle. Although, a lot depends on the craftsmen themselves.

How to remove and disassemble the transfer case

How to remove:

  1. Loosen the transfer box control rod from the mounting.
  2. Disconnect the horizontal handbrake link.
  3. Disconnect the intermediate driveshaft, front axle drive shaft and rear axle drive driveshaft. After this, the box will be easy to remove.

Disassembling the box begins with removing the central brake. Then the drive shaft and rear axle gear are removed from the crankcase. After disconnecting the speedometer cable, you can remove the intermediate shaft cover and remove it. The drives to the front axle are removed last.

Next, all parts must be carefully inspected and, if necessary, repaired or replaced. An important stage of repair is checking the gaps. Before assembly, all parts should be well lubricated, new oil seals and seals should be installed. The felt rings must first be impregnated with lubricant. Assemble the box in the reverse order of disassembly.
