For several decades (since the 1960s), the Kremenchug Automobile Plant has produced large trucks and specialized equipment. But with the collapse of the USSR, the situation at the enterprise began to change dramatically, and not for the better. The KrAZ company continued to produce large equipment, but sales and production volumes were gradually declining. And in recent years, the enterprise was on the verge of ruin.
A change of activity can bring KrAZ out of the current situation. Moreover, as was the case with KamAZ, the company should probably start producing cars designed for a wide audience. Such a vehicle could be a compact pickup truck, renderings of which were published by an independent designer. This model with a double cabin and a small cargo platform is intended primarily for use in urban conditions. By the way, Ford and Hyundai have already presented similar new products - Maverick and Santa Cruz, respectively. But the Ukrainian KrAZ-260 pickup truck 2021-2022, due to its poorer equipment and the lack of a second row of seats, will be cheaper than the Korean and American models.
The presented Ukrainian pickup truck, if it enters the market, can become one of the bestsellers in its class. This assumption is largely due to the low price. But no less important is the fact that this model stands out for its non-standard body. Also noteworthy in the published renderings is the high ground clearance, which will provide the car with good cross-country ability.
At the same time, it is still difficult to judge what technical part such a pickup truck can receive. The fact is that KrAZ has never produced vehicles of this class. In this regard, it is quite logical for a company to turn to third-party manufacturers for help. And the most likely option will be Renault. The choice in favor of the French company was due to two reasons. Firstly, Renault is systematically “attacking” the Ukrainian market, establishing its own production here and increasing the number of models presented. Secondly, the French company produces really cheap cars. Accordingly, if KrAZ borrows a platform and engines from Renault, then the price of a new pickup truck will be able to be kept at a level of up to a million rubles. That is, in comparison with the Ford Maverick, the Ukrainian model will be cheaper by about 500 thousand rubles.
Design
Despite the fact that the KrAZ-260 2021-2022 pickup truck is one of the vehicles used primarily for transporting goods, it will not get lost in city traffic. The fact is that the KrAZ pickup truck is designed in a sporty style. The body of the Ukrainian model is distinguished by smooth shapes and slow transitions. This configuration not only improves the appearance, but also has a positive effect on the redistribution of air masses, which increases fuel efficiency. At the same time, like many other pickups, the presented new product received voluminous wings. But they, like the latest RAV4, are square in shape and complemented by a relatively thin plastic body kit that runs along the bottom of the side doors.
The KrAZ pickup truck is presented with a two-door cab. Judging by the rendering images, only 2 chairs are installed in its interior. The absence of a second row of seats is indicated by the compact dimensions of the rear glass. At the same time, the front one turned out to be quite large, largely thanks to the heavily stacked pillars, which also emphasize the sporty style of the car.
One of the remarkable exterior details of the presented new product is the hood. Along its side edges there is a high oval-shaped protrusion. Because of this, not only does the front end appear higher, but it also creates the effect that the hood is curving into the engine compartment. This design feature, combined with some other solutions, led to another interesting consequence. The front part of the body of the new KrAZ pickup truck has a ladder structure.
This shape is given by a two-section radiator grille with a relatively large mesh. Its upper part is set at a noticeable angle. Moreover, above it there is a decorative insert with a branded badge, which further enhances the declared effect. The front optics of the Ukrainian new product are supplemented with a certain semblance of “eyebrows”. The headlights with two sections of LED lights on top are also covered with a decorative insert.
The front bumper is visually divided into several segments. On its sides there are deep ventilation holes with a fine mesh, which, due to decorative protrusions, are visually connected to the radiator grille. At the bottom of the front bumper there is a long but thin air intake built into a plastic body kit.
The cargo platform of the KrAZ-260 2021-2022 pickup truck is also compact in size and, like the rest of the body, has a smooth shape. In particular, its sides have a rounded structure. At the stern of the new product there are large lights, which are probably complemented by LEDs. The door of the cargo platform, inside of which an additional load-bearing frame is fixed, seems to be slightly recessed into the body. This effect is ensured by the protruding rear bumper, with small brake lights located closer to the center. And underneath there is a plastic body kit attached.
History of the KrAZ automobile brand
The KrAZ logo was first installed on the radiator grille in the form of the flag of Soviet Ukraine. The current logo of the Kremenchug auto giant is an originally designed name in blue-green color on a white background. The KrAZ emblem is a stylized blue-green letter “K”.

Kremenchug Automobile Plant (abbreviation KrAZ) is a Ukrainian company producing trucks and special equipment. The KrAZ manufacturer is located in the city of Kremenchug, Poltava region.
The history of the KrAZ brand begins in the post-war years. The country needed to restore destroyed bridges, and in August 1945 the People's Commissariat of Railways decided to build an enterprise for the production of bridge structures. They were produced for 8 years, then they began to make combines. In 1958, the combine plant was repurposed into an automobile plant producing trucks.
Modernized KrAZ-221
The first KrAZ-222 mining trucks rolled off the assembly line in the late 60s. At the same time, serial production of flatbed trucks began: KrAZ-214 and 219, and the following spring - the KrAZ-221 tractor for 30-ton semi-trailers.
The plant completed 1968 with its 100,000th truck. In 1970, a new workshop opened its doors. In January of the following year, the company was awarded the Order of Lenin.
Production increased its pace, many processes were mechanized and automated, and new machines were put into operation. For 10 years, the automobile plant has produced a model range of KrAZ trucks: 255B, V and L, 256B, 257B, 258.
Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, the KrAZ automobile brand occupied a leading place in the automotive industry of Europe and the country. In 1988, the company assembled almost 30 thousand cars, more than half were exported to 40 countries. After the collapse of the USSR, the enterprise lost markets and found itself in a very difficult situation. This situation forced designers to create models with an original design and increased equipment. The first examples of this family were the onboard KrAZ-65101 and the 6510 dump truck.

In March 1993, the company produced its 750,000th truck, and the plant was awarded international awards. Powerful KrAZ-65055 dump trucks and 6444 and 64431 tractor-trailer trains leave the assembly shop of the plant.
KB-2 is working on improving the KrAZ turnover: dump truck 65034 and timber truck 643701 for 30-ton cargo. In order to expand the scope of consumption, in 1995, at the International Motor Show in Kyiv, the plant showed 16- and 19-ton heavy trucks. The series was presented

In 1996, a joint venture with IVECO began operating at the plant. In 2000, the automobile plant withdrew from its membership, as Mega-Motors (Ukraine-Germany) became a shareholder. At this time, the majority of production was made up of dump trucks and tractors.
In 2006, the 800,000th truck left the main line.
Specifications
It is still difficult to predict what technical part the first KrAZ-260 2021-2022 pickup truck may receive. As shown earlier, the most likely option for the Ukrainian model would be its transfer to the CMF-B platform owned by Renault. This “trolley” is specifically designed for compact cars and is already used in the production of a similar Dacia Duster pickup truck.
In this case, the Ukrainian model can borrow from the Romanian all-wheel drive system, which supports 3 driving modes, including one with a rigidly locked rear axle. Under the hood of the KrAZ pickup truck there will be a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine developing no more than 150 hp. power. Together with it, they can offer a continuously variable transmission or a 6-band automatic transmission.

Krazourals RKR - a new transport for oil workers
Even with a quick glance at the title photo, there is a certainty that these Urals are somehow wrong, but at the same time there is something familiar about them. That’s right, because these are not Miass trucks at all, but self-propelled chassis of the RKR brand with units from the Ukrainian KrAZ.
Although these are quite production cars, it is not so easy to meet them on the road. They are intended for the installation of equipment for oil workers. The history of their appearance is clear. In recent years, Ukrainian KrAZ trucks have had a narrow but stable niche in Russia. Customers willingly took their simple and inexpensive dump trucks for quarries, as well as all-wheel drive vehicles for timber trucks and installations for oil workers. The latter were not particularly interested in power supply and modern filling, not to mention ergonomics. Slowly driving to the bush, raising the “candle” (as the drilling rig is called in jargon) and threshing with diesel at low speeds - this is the purpose of the KrAZ in the oil industry.

After the severance of economic ties between Ukraine and Russia, the Krazovsky distributor was actually left without prospects, but with good technical personnel. But the demand from regular customers has not gone away. And then a logical idea came - to provide it yourself. The main units of KrAZ vehicles were still Russian: the engine, gearbox and transfer case were branded YaMZ. There were enough axles, suspensions, gas tanks and other things in the warehouse to last for years, and mastering the production of simple and even frame side members was not a difficult task. They decided to use a cabin with a hood from the Urals; there are still no other hoods of this class in Russia.

At the same time, the design was modified: starting with a standard three-axle chassis, others were gradually added, four- and even five-axles. Wheel formulas are also non-standard: 6x6+2, 8x6, 10x8. Roll-away additional axles can be ordered from BPW. The frame is extended, especially for oil equipment, the chassis load capacity is from 32 to 50 tons.
The engine has also changed: instead of the YaMZ-238, they now use its turbocharged “upgrade” 7511 with a power of 420 hp. The gearbox is also YaMZ, a nine-speed manual 2391.

Since the vehicles operate mainly “in the north,” the chassis is equipped with a full northern package: “autonomy,” an electric engine heater, heated fuel filter and fuel intakes, insulated gas tanks and boxes, as well as copper fuel pipes.
Of course, one cannot expect large quantities of such equipment, but RKR machines have occupied their niche: about a dozen equipment manufacturers successfully use them. And the price, thanks to domestic units, is obviously lower than the cost of foreign analogues.
