Review of the line of walk-behind tractors from the MTZ Belarus brand. Description, characteristics. Types of attachments

When choosing equipment to work on a plot, a farmer is guided by its quality. MTZ walk-behind tractors are an excellent option. The Minsk Tractor Plant has been producing them for more than 70 years. During this period of time, many models were released, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. But it is the walk-behind tractors of the MTZ models that have good maneuverability, while remaining compact and cheap equipment.

Since Belarus is famous for its potatoes, many additions in the form of attachments have been produced for walk-behind tractors of this type. A clear advantage of domestic technology is its unpretentiousness; it can operate even on low-quality fuel. The Minsk plant produces many types of equipment, but the article will tell you about the best of them.

Description

The active growth and development of small farming in the 90s provoked industrial enterprises to produce compact units to facilitate agricultural work. These machines were significantly superior to tractors, which the average farmer could not afford to maintain. They were not only compact in size, but also highly maneuverable and productive.

However, by this time the Minsk Tractor Plant (MTZ) had already introduced small-sized models Belarus-05, MTZ 082 and MTZ 112 to the agricultural market, which immediately gained popularity due to their reliable design and ease of maintenance. Serial production increased and it was decided to move further production to the Smorgon Aggregate Plant, which was a branch.

The MTZ model range was expanded with walk-behind tractors with different characteristics and, accordingly, they had different indices in the name 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 and 12. But only some 05, 06, 08, 09 and 12 gained popularity thanks to a successful combination functionality and reliability. Today, the main focus at MTZ enterprises is on the production of models 06 and 09.

Advantages of MTZ models

  • Versatility, thanks to which you can connect any attachments to the walk-behind tractor to facilitate agricultural work. The design provides not only for the use of plows, cutters, harrows, and other things, but also brushes, blades and snow blowers for cleaning the area.
  • Small dimensions allowing the walk-behind tractor not to take up much space when stored.
  • Maneuverability, which is achieved through a well-thought-out design despite the significant weight of the unit.
  • Easy to maintain.
  • Possibility to repair without resorting to service centers.
  • Low requirements for the quality of fuel and lubricants.
  • Availability of spare parts.

Disadvantages of MTZ walk-behind tractors

  • High cost compared to analogues from other manufacturers;
  • Unclear gear fixation (as noted by owners);
  • The need to apply effort to switch the differential;
  • Mandatory running-in before use.
  • Weight. It can be considered as advantages and disadvantages at the same time, because such walk-behind tractors are quite difficult to control on wet soil.

Walk-behind tractor options

The previous version achieved popularity due to its versatility and good performance. But this does not mean that other models produced at the tractor plant will have poor performance.

Basically, all models were developed by the same designers, and therefore represent a similar concept, only in a different embodiment. The development of agricultural machinery began in Minsk back in the 90s of the last century. Then the line included several MTZ model tractors and Belarus walk-behind tractors.

Then the development of walk-behind tractors was transferred to a new plant, and tractors received indexes by model number, from 5 to 12. And the most popular models were “Belarus” 05, 06, 09 and 12.

The first quality model

The MTZ 05 walk-behind tractor can rightfully be called the first high-quality model produced in Minsk. It was produced from 1978 to 1992. The main purpose was to cultivate the land before sowing. Also, having additional equipment, it was possible to mow grass and transport food.

Important: the disadvantage of the equipment was its motor; it had low power, which did not allow it to work on hard soils. Therefore, the model quickly went out of fashion, and designers began to produce a new model range.

However, the design of this model is so simple that it can be assembled in the garage. It has a single axle chassis and was made to replace mini tractors. The engine torque does not exceed one thousand, due to which the tractor’s power was only sufficient to transport loads of no more than 500 kilograms. Often the engine was removed and used as a drive for pumps and similar machines used in agricultural production.

This model could be equipped with the following equipment:

  • cultivator;
  • plow;
  • trailer;
  • mower;
  • harrow.

The price category of this model is not high due to the fact that production ceased in the last century. Unfortunately, at the moment it is almost impossible to find working models.

Second walk-behind tractor model

The MTZ 06 walk-behind tractors were not too different from their predecessors and were intended for gardening work. The latest variation was a model with a Weima engine installed.

It is capable of loosening the soil to a depth of 30 centimeters, which is an excellent indicator today. The engine has 250 cubic centimeters and features protection against low oil levels, which significantly extends its service life.

Like the previous model, the Belarus MTZ 06 walk-behind tractor has a number of extensions that allow it to be used not only as a cultivator, but also as a machine for harvesting and subsequent cultivation of land.

The design also allows you to increase the stability of the walk-behind tractor by expanding the wheelbase and adding attachments. The gearbox has 3 speeds, including reverse gear. At the same time, the walk-behind tractor reaches speeds of up to 15 kilometers per hour, which is quite enough to perform field tasks.

The price category of this unit is slightly higher than that of its predecessor, ranging from 50 to 100 thousand rubles. At the same time, it is quite possible to find a foreign analogue or completely new equipment for a similar price.

Heavy version of the equipment

The MTZ 12 walk-behind tractor is considered the heaviest model. But its power indicators are so high that this particular model is often chosen by farmers with large fields.

Often this equipment can be found under the control of a utility worker who uses it as a tractor. The engine here is 4-stroke and comes with a capacity of 250 cc. However, the model did not become widespread in this configuration.

Although the walk-behind tractor has high power, preference is often given to analogues with better handling characteristics. And given the weight of almost 200 kilograms, it becomes clear that not every person can cope with such a walk-behind tractor. A popular analogue is the Centaur model range.

But it is convenient to use the MTZ 12 as a tractor. Its design provides for some modifications that turn it into a full-fledged worker.

The gearbox allows you to drive the tractor in 6 gears, including 2 reverse gears. Also, MTZ 12 can be sorted out and built as a stationary device, used as a powerful drive for other devices. Low competitiveness gave the tractor a relatively low price, which ranges from 50 to 80 thousand rubles.

Review of the MTZ model range

Let's look at the popular Belarusian models.

Motoblock Belarus MTZ 05

This model was the first to be produced in 1978 and until 1992 it held a leading position in the market. The main purpose is to prepare the soil for agricultural work. Thanks to the ability to use a wide range of attachments, the walk-behind tractor can be used for mowing grass, harvesting root crops, inter-row cultivation and more.

Motoblock MTZ-05

The standard equipment of the MTZ 05 has a power of 5 hp, which was increased over time to 8 hp. This allows the unit to work in small areas and effectively cope with the assigned tasks. Small dimensions of 180x85x1070 cm with a weight of 135 kg allow you to compactly store the walk-behind tractor and work without much difficulty. Treatment of row spacing is carried out without damaging the planted crops. The advantage of the unit is its ground clearance, which is 30 cm, which makes it possible to successfully overcome all soil unevenness.

Characteristics of the MTZ Belarus 09N walk-behind tractor

Comparison of MTZ and Motor Sich

It is difficult to answer which walk-behind tractor is better, but if you rely on the cost and the number of positive reviews about the operation of both units, the similarities are clearly visible. Even the appearance is similar in the photo.

  • The ability to set the track size in Motor Sich is larger, as many as 4 sizes.
  • The ground clearance of Motor Sich is less, 24 and 30 for MTZ, respectively.
  • Motoblocks of the Smorgon plant are equipped with imported motors capable of reaching speeds of up to 12 km/h, while Motor Sich installs motors of its own production, which can accelerate to 16 km/h.
  • Zaporozhye walk-behind tractors are more durable because they are capable of lifting heavier loads than Smorgon ones.
  • Due to the ability to work with heavy attachments, Ukrainian manufacturers had to increase the weight of the walk-behind tractor to 220 kg, which cannot affect the complexity of its operation without an adapter.

Which walk-behind tractor should you choose – MTZ or Chinese?

Chinese products have become so firmly established in our everyday life that they have become distinguished by their quality. You can often hear the phrase “this is quality China.” This applies to the Lifan engines they produce, which are produced using advanced technologies.

Chinese diesel models are an alternative to gasoline ones and allow you to significantly save on fuel, which itself is cheaper. In addition, the consumption of a diesel device is significantly less, which is an undeniable advantage than that of a gasoline device. But at the same time, the cost of such models is much higher, which does not make them popular on the market.

Owner reviews

Numerous online reviews confirm the quality of the mechanisms and the performance of the engines.

Alexei:

In my opinion, MTZ remains the most reliable walk-behind tractor in the post-Soviet space. My godfather's unit, produced in 1985, with its original engine still works. I bought myself one with a Honda engine. I’m happy that I didn’t make a mistake with my choice, as it works great and starts right away. Even in winter there are no problems with starting. To save money I use 92 gasoline. I don't see any downsides.
