KamAZ 63501 is a four-axle model with increased cross-country ability and an 8 by 8 wheel arrangement. The vehicle is of military origin. Its development was carried out by order and using funds from the Ministry of Defense. Moreover, the technology is used not only for military purposes, but also for civilian activities. In areas where maximum cross-country ability is a priority, KamAZ 63501 is in great demand.
Production of the car began in 2004. Thanks to its unique off-road characteristics, the model quickly gained popularity not only in the domestic market, but also outside the country.
In 2010, KamAZ 63501 underwent global modernization, which affected the performance of the equipment. Fuel consumption has decreased, service life has increased, and maintainability has improved. Water tank with a capacity of 6000 l. made of structural steel with anti-corrosion treatment, the outside is lined with armor plates like the 5th class cabin. The 400 liter foam concentrate container is made of stainless steel and is located in the pump compartment.
It is envisaged that the vehicle may be in conditions that are difficult to maneuver during operation. Therefore, in the rear compartment there is a hydraulically driven hose reel for winding the hose onto it. Through a hose reel, water enters the car tank, then it is supplied from the fire monitor to the fire. Water is pumped in by another fire engine, which is working in a safe location.
This allows you to avoid wasting time refueling the tanker from a water source, often far from the fire. When moving the machine to another location, the operator has the opportunity to wind the sleeve onto the reel without leaving the cab.
To perform fire-fighting work, as well as for emergency rescue and restoration work, the vehicle is equipped with fire-fighting equipment.
A video surveillance system is installed to monitor the vehicle's mechanisms and for all-round visibility. The operator, while in the cab, can control the water pump, monitor, crane, blade and hose reel. The car can be delivered to the work site by plane, ship or under its own power.

KamAZ-63501 vehicles of the first years of production were equipped with KamAZ-740.50-360 (Euro-2) power units. This is a four-stroke 8-cylinder diesel engine, with a V-shaped 90° cylinder arrangement, overhead valve, liquid cooling. The design of this engine has a turbocharger with intermediate cooling of the charge air.
Currently, KamAZ-63501 trucks are equipped with KamAZ-740.602-360 engines - similar to the original ones, but modified to the Euro-4 standard. These engines are equipped with electronic control and a Common Rail fuel supply system.
The technical parameters of this KamAZ-63501 power unit are as follows:
- Maximum net power at a crankshaft speed of 1900 rpm - 265 kW (or 360 horsepower);
- The maximum useful torque at a crankshaft speed of 1300 rpm is 1570 N.m (160 kgcm) (in the first version of the engine it was 1452 N.m (148 kgcm);

Transmission
KamAZ-63501 vehicles are equipped with mechanical 16-speed gearboxes of the ZF 16S 1820 model. These, initially imported gearboxes developed and produced by Zahnrad Fabrik, were imported from Europe. Then the production of gearboxes of the ZF Ecosplit family - ZF 16S151 and ZF 16S1820 was established in Naberezhnye Chelny, and now more than 80 percent of all KamAZ heavy trucks are equipped with these gearboxes, produced by the TsF-Kama joint venture.
A number of domestic enterprises, including KamAZ OJSC, ZMZ OJSC, and RosALit LLC, have established the casting and machining of aluminum housings for these boxes, cast iron covers and clutch housings, and the production of shafts and gears. However, as of 2017, bearings, synchronizers and seals are still supplied from Germany.
The clutch on KamAZ-63501 is diaphragm type, single-disc, dry. The drive is hydraulic, with pneumatic booster. The diameter of the pads is 430 mm. Transfer case - KamAZ-65111 model, two-stage (1.662:1 first/highest and 0.917:1 second/lowest), with a locking center differential. The main gear is double, a pair of bevel gears and a pair of spur gears (7.22:1). The differential is lockable on the rear axles. The front axle drive is permanent and cannot be switched off.
Brakes and electrical equipment
The KamAZ-63501 vehicle is equipped with four autonomous braking systems: a working system controlled by a pedal on the front panel of the truck cab, a spare system (connected to the parking one) and an auxiliary one. Brake type: pneumatic. The total area of the brake linings is 8400 cm2. Brake lining width – 140 millimeters; drum diameter – 400 millimeters. The car is also equipped with an anti-lock brake system.
The electrical equipment of the KamAZ-63501 truck includes two batteries x 12 Volt / 190 Ampere-hour; generator 28 Volt / 3000 Watt. The on-board network voltage is 24 Volts.
Device
At the time of release (2004), KamAZ 63501 had no analogues in the world. Four drive axles, high load capacity and an 8 by 8 wheel arrangement ensured excellent cross-country ability and made the model unique.
KamAZ 63501 was equipped with a 16-speed manual transmission ZF 16S 1820. Initially, the gearbox was imported from Europe (manufacturer: Zahnrad Fabrik). However, subsequently the production of these checkpoints was established in Naberezhnye Chelny. Currently, almost all modifications of KamAZ 63501 are equipped with gearboxes assembled by Russian manufacturers. Cast iron covers, gears, aluminum housings, clutch housings and other parts for transmissions are manufactured in Russia, while oil seals, synchronizers and bearings continue to be imported from Germany.
The car uses a single-plate dry diaphragm-type clutch with a hydraulic drive and pneumatic booster. The KamAZ 63501 is equipped with a 2-speed transfer case KamAZ 65111 with a locking center differential. The differential is locked on the rear axles, the drive of the front axles is permanent and cannot be switched off.
For KamAZ 63501 there are 4 brake systems:
- operating system driven by a pedal. It is based on drum mechanisms. Pad width – 140 mm, drum diameter – 400 mm;
- parking system;
- spare system combined with parking;
- auxiliary system.

Cabin
The cabin of the all-wheel drive four-axle vehicle from Naberezhnye Chelny does not differ from other models of the plant in any original properties: it is a standard KamAZ cabin - three-seater, all-metal, tilting forward. Along with other trucks, the KamAZ-63501 cab was also restyled. Currently, a modern cabin is installed on the four-axle vehicle, in which the contours of Mercedes trucks can be discerned.
In fact, despite its German origin, only the first hundred cabins of the new model were delivered to Chelny from Europe assembled. Then they were imported in the form of six large preparations. From these, a frame was welded in special conductors specifically for this cabin. In recent years, the plant has launched an assembly line, where cabins are already completely manufactured from several hundred parts.
At the painting stage, they introduced cataphoresis priming of the cabins (all of them, even the old ones that are manufactured for spare parts). The cabin is completely immersed in a bath in which electro-deposition of soil onto the steel occurs. Therefore, we can hope for a significant increase in the corrosion resistance of new cabins compared to old-style cabins.
New cabins are available in three versions: No. 1 – day cabin (short and with a low ceiling); No. 2 – also with a low ceiling, but elongated – equipped with a berth 685 mm wide; No. 3 – elongated and with a high ceiling. It is clear that for KamAZ-63501 the third option is not relevant - this is not a long-haul tractor. But the second one is available: for an off-road truck, focused on working on the winter roads of the Far North, Siberia and the Far East, a cab with a sleeper is the right option.
The external width of the new cabin is slightly wider than the previous one (2.5 m instead of 2.3 m). The height from floor to ceiling is 1.51 m. An adjustable steering column is installed, equipped with a pneumatic lock. The driver's seat (licensed "Grammer", made in neighboring Yelabuga by the joint venture TIS LLC) is installed on an air suspension.
If the cabin has a sleeping place, then in the compartments under the lower shelf it is possible to place a significant number of things and belongings. There you can also equip a portable refrigerator. The KamAZ-63501 cab suspension is four-point, on spring struts. It is raised by a hydraulic lift, pumping the pump with an installation.
Purpose
KamAZ 63501 is a unique vehicle from the entire range of KamAZ vehicles, which perhaps has no analogues either in Russia or in the rest of the world. Thanks to its off-road qualities, this model has won recognition all over the world.
This truck has an 8x8 wheel arrangement and all 4 axles are driven. Initially, the vehicle was developed for the Ministry of Defense and the needs of the army, but has found application in other activities that require the transportation of heavy loads under poor road conditions.
The off-road qualities of this vehicle allow it to deliver goods to places where other vehicles simply cannot pass. An add-on can be installed on the chassis to accommodate additional equipment.
Modifications
KamAZ 63501 is produced in two variations: an all-terrain chassis for installing special equipment and add-ons, and a model with an onboard platform. Among the equipment available for installation are fire installations, insulated vans, log carriers, geological stations, manipulators, timber carriers and drilling rigs. The flatbed truck based on KamAZ 63501 has the KamAZ index 63501-996.

- KamAZ 63501-3026-40 - variation with an installation frame length of 6970 mm, 2 tanks with a capacity of 210 and 350 l and a KamAZ 740.602-360 engine (Euro-4);
- KamAZ 63501-3960-41 – version with an installation frame length of 6635 mm, 1 fuel tank of 210 l and a KamAZ 740.612-320 engine (Euro-4).
The following special equipment is assembled on the KamAZ 63501 basis:
- MLRS 9A52-4 “Kama” is one of the versions of the multiple launch rocket system of the “Smerch” series. A prototype of the car was shown at MAKS-2007. The technique allows for coordinated fire against the enemy. At the same time, the complex remains as mobile as possible;
- KamAZ 63501AT "Bear" is a military tractor designed for towing guns of the 2A36 "Gyacinth-B" and 2A65 "Msta-B" types. The model is equipped with an IM-50 crane with a lifting capacity of up to 2000 kg and allows you to transport up to 7 people, not counting the driver.
MLRS 9A52-4 "Kama"
It is a modern version of the Smerch multiple launch rocket system. This combat vehicle with a 6-barrel package of guides was first presented to the general public at MAKS-2007 (Moscow International Aviation and Space Salon) and REA-2009 (international arms exhibition in Nizhny Tagil).
The use of this system on a four-axle all-wheel drive KamAZ-63501 chassis increases the mobility of MLRS by reducing their weight, overall dimensions and speed. Individual crews can disperse and conduct coordinated fire. Developed not only for the Russian army, but also for export.
Artillery tractor "Bear"
KamAZ-63501 chassis, adapted for transporting 152-mm guns and howitzer guns "Msta" and "Gyacinth", as well as for other towed artillery pieces and systems weighing up to 12 tons. The vehicle is equipped with an IM-50 crane with a lifting capacity of up to 2 tons and a boom reach of up to 6.14 m, for loading/unloading ammunition and other cargo. Equipped with a habitable compartment to accommodate the crew of an artillery gun. This compartment provides space for six people. The cabin, habitable compartment, batteries, fuel tanks and engine bottom are armored according to the fifth class of protection.
In the roof of the habitable compartment there are two armored hatches for emergency exit under fire, two doors and two hermetically sealed loopholes in the side walls for firing. The heating, ventilation and filtering units are autonomous; an intercom is provided between the cabin and the habitable compartment.
The first appearance of this technology was in 2006, at the international arms exhibition “REA-2006”. And in 2009, the “Bear” artillery tractor on the KamAZ-63501 chassis was adopted by the Russian army, and its mass production was launched.
Complex for the operational deployment of temporary roads
This multi-purpose mechanized complex for the rapid deployment of temporary roads based on KamAZ-63501 is designed to ensure the passage of any equipment through difficult or marshy areas. Within ten minutes, a temporary roadbed one hundred meters long and 4.6 meters wide can be deployed on such a problem area. Both wheeled and tracked vehicles weighing up to 60 tons will be able to travel along this temporary road.
Among other options for using the KamAZ-63501 vehicle in the Russian Army is as a base for mobile command posts; mobile radar stations.
Truck cranes and other special vehicles
In particular, truck cranes based on KamAZ-63501 have become widespread. A powerful crane installation with a lifting capacity of 30, 40 or 50 tons (“Klintsy”, “Galichanin”, etc.) is mounted on the chassis. The telescopic four-section boom of such cranes consists of all-metal trough-shaped profiles. The crane can be used for high-precision installation, when the load is placed at a certain height in the finished structure. The truck's power unit powers two hydraulic pumps that drive the crane unit and allow all crane operations to be combined simultaneously.
The lifting height of the load with the main boom of such a crane is a little over 30 meters (depending on the modification, there is a slight variation in this value); when using an additional jib - a little over 40 meters. These cranes are used in various areas of the economy, for example, in the installation of power lines.
