The new technology can fully be called an international creation - more than one foreign automobile concern took part in its development. The 5490's family tree is branchy and intricate. Back in 2007, it held a tender to create a project for a new series of cabins for its trucks. The competition, having unconditionally fulfilled all the terms of reference, was won by the South Korean diversified enterprise DMEC, which is part of the KIA Motors group of companies.

It, in turn, belongs to the Hyundai Corporation since the end of the last century. At one time, part of the shares of this corporation was owned by the Japanese Mitsubishi, but with the advent of the millennium, most of the shares of both auto companies were bought by the German Daimler. Thus, the new KAMAZ-5490 is the product of the best minds of the world's leading automakers.

Two cab options are offered: Mersedes Axor and the development of Korean partners KamAZ

The project was developed by engineers from Daimler Trucks and designers from OJSC KAMAZ, with the former creating the engine and axle, and the latter thinking about the cabin. Over 1.2 billion rubles were invested in the development process alone.


So,
KAMAZ-5490 , also known as Kamaxor, has ceased to be an exhibition rarity, and is often found on the roads.

In general, this is no longer a classic “oak” KAMAZ, of course. But there is no need to call it a “European highway”. The cabin that is used on it was created at Mercedes for something else - for “short-arm”, regional transportation. For real “long-range combat” you need a more spacious cabin, with different equipment. In fact, by calling this tractor “mainline”, KAMAZ is disingenuous, wishful thinking.

Yes, they use Camaxors for intra-Russian long-range combat, which can exceed trans-European combat in terms of mileage. Yes, this car is KAMAZ’s super hit and is selling well. But the “super hit” is ensured by the relatively low price, which KAMAZ keeps at a loss. But these losses are justified for securing a niche “for the future.” So the business idea pursued by KAMAZ is justified.

Our verdict is that this is a strong “middle peasant” - a tractor for local transportation, but not a “highway” truck. KAMAZ does not yet have a real highway.

The dream of Russian truck drivers

Thanks to the efforts of Kama specialists, the new KAMAZ model will have a 428-horsepower engine from Mercedes-Benz, running on Euro-5 fuel, or a KAMAZ-740.75. The creators claim that thanks to modern engines, the car's lifespan is about a million kilometers. And most likely, this is true, but what is the overall design and other technical characteristics of the KAMAZ-5490?

A similar mainline tractor has not been produced before. The new model has a cabin layout that is atypical for the Russian automotive industry, a high-tech gearbox and axles that have no analogues.

Understanding what exactly carriers require, the plant focused maximum attention on increasing the level of driver comfort.

The cabin is striking in its spaciousness - its internal height reaches 1910 millimeters; in addition, drivers in parking lots will be able to relax at the same time, for this purpose a bunk bed is provided.

One of the most amazing concepts for increasing the level of comfort for the driver on a long journey was proposed on September 08, 2015 at the KamAZ stand of the Comtrans 2015 exposition. KamAZ developers have come up with an amazing solution! Instead of constantly lengthening the cab and increasing the overall length of the truck, a new concept has emerged - “The driver must interact with the interior of the vehicle as effectively as possible!” This is how the Transformer cabin appeared!

The basis for the construction of a new principle was the idea: a combination of innovative solutions, technologies and a comfortable stay for the driver on the basis of the construction of a multifunctional efficient space of a KamAZ truck.

The KamAZ-2020 Transformer cab concept is the largest and most comfortable version, which maximizes the living space of the truck driver. But there are several design options and, as a consequence, the overall dimensions of the concept. The 2020 cabin received this level of comfort thanks to its internal dimensions: the wide cabin has a footprint of 2.5 meters and almost 2 meters of height from flat floor to ceiling.

KamAZ “Transformer” is a rejection of the old closed driver’s workplace and the initial stage of creating an effective spacious “work room”. Proper organization of space makes it possible to create something like a tiny office, a living room with a good level of comfort, a kitchen with all the accessories, including a sink and stove, and even a small gym. Although the latter can hardly be called such, because a treadmill is not exactly a gym.

Transformer technical solutions will make it possible to significantly reduce the load on the car driver, as well as monitor compliance with sleep and rest standards. The developers also managed to significantly reduce the harmful effects on the driver of a sedentary lifestyle and occupational diseases.

The driver's seat of the KamAZ 2022 has an electromagnetic suspension, which reacts in real time to any movement of the concept cabin and absorbs vibrations and shocks that arise. The developers of this chair managed to reduce vibration and vibration by almost 90%. I think drivers will really appreciate this innovation. There are also screens in the cab through which the driver can control the entire space around the truck, not excluding hidden areas. Information is presented in a clear and simple manner. The on-board communication and information system always helps to get video and audio communications. Which will please both the home drivers and the management.

The driver’s personal hygiene is just as important for everyday travel across the expanses of our country. The cabin is equipped with an “area that includes a shower and a retractable plexiglass curtain. There is also a pull-out composting toilet and a collapsible sink. The entire hygiene area is illuminated with low-power LED lamps. The cabin also has all the necessary equipment for cooking in a practically complete kitchen. The “Transformer” cabin at COMTRANS-2015 created a real sensation and although the release of this masterpiece is planned in 2022, the presented concept has already received several large orders.

Recipe for Tatar “diamond”

Among other important advantages of the unique brainchild of the auto giant are the automatic wheel air suspension control system ECAS, a system that ensures directional stability, and ultra-safe electronically controlled disc brakes.

People who understand automotive technology will be able to evaluate the contents of this promising model:

  • two turbodiesels: either KAMAZ-740.75 or German Mercedes-Benz OM 457LA;
  • Daimler HL6 axle with hypoid transmission;
  • gearboxes ZF 16S-2221 or automatic transmission ZF-AS-Tronic 12AS-2131;
  • low saddle height of only 110 centimeters.

With all these technical “goodies”, the cost of the new truck model will be 2.5 million, which is approximately 20% lower than the price of long-haul tractors from competing manufacturers.

The new model also has its drawbacks, for example, the ability to carry only a very small supply of fuel - two 400-liter tanks. The figures are also not the best relative to the weight of the vehicle in running order – almost 8 tons. But the main tractor has the ability to work as part of a road train with a maximum load of up to 44 tons.
