KamAZ-5320: Conversion of rear wedge hubs to Euro hubs. | Truck repair and operation

The search for inexpensive rear Eurohubs continued slowly. Not to say that it is used. Euro hubs are easily accessible, but with some persistence you can still find them inexpensively. Finally I heard a call, everything is available for scrap metal, come. We didn’t hesitate and went 200 km to get the required part. A car with a trailer means you don't have to drive a truck. We came and looked. It turned out to be almost a set of hubs, including the front ones. The only thing missing was a couple of brake drums. We loaded it, drove it through the scales, paid for the metal slightly above the purchase price, and four hours later everything was in place.

Purchased spare parts.

They didn’t waste time, they immediately started disassembling and troubleshooting. A lot had to be unscrewed with a meat grinder. Finally, everything has been dismantled; everything unnecessary remains to be scrapped.

Everything is sorted

Surprisingly, even the brake linings turned out to be of sufficient thickness and there was no need to buy anything other than a few seals and bolts. We started disassembling the 1st hub. It didn't take long to remove the wheels, unscrew the axle shaft, and then remove the hub.

The wheels and axle shaft were removed.

A set of washers and nuts with general liquid lubrication of the hubs.

After removing the pads, we began to remove the pad support panels. Here we had to tinker, because most likely no one had touched their fastenings and over their long life they had completely rusted. I had to use a torch to heat the connections and pour water on them. After that, about sixty percent of the nuts were unscrewed. I had to buy additional nuts and bolts and internal brake boots. After this we started assembling.

Pad mounting base.

Having thrown the boot over the axle, we began to install the base for mounting the pads. After tightening a fair amount of nuts and bolts, we began installing the boot and the pad release mechanism along with the energy accumulator. The entire fastening is different and differs from the KAMAZ 5320 mechanism. The fastening of the energy accumulator, the expansion fist and the ratchets are different from those previously installed.

The brake mechanism is assembled, but without the tension spring.

The difference is in the opening fists. On the left is KAMAZ-5320.

After that, they replaced the pads and locked the axles of the pads.

The difference is in the length of the ratchet levers. Bottom KAMAZ-5320.

It's time to install the hub.

Euro hub.

Here we need to make a digression. If the old hub had bearings lubricated with transmission oil, then the new hub has plastic lubrication and the hub bearing adjustment nuts have been changed and an additional oil seal has been installed on the inside of the hub. Therefore, I had to lubricate the bearings with lithol and install the hub in place, then install a washer with holes and an internal whisker, then a plate lock washer, and only after that insert a rubber liner into the thread slot and only after that tighten the hub nut.

Euro hub mounting kit with grease lubricated bearings.

After tightening the hub nut and turning the hubs a few turns, loosen the nut 1/8 turn and lock the ends of the lock washer on the edge of the nut. Then we installed the outer hub oil seal, having previously lubricated the working edge with litor.

Installed Eurohub.

Hub with installed oil seal.

Euro brake drum.

After that, we installed the gasket and the axle shaft by tightening the fastening nuts. The brake drum was put into place, oriented according to the holes of its fastening bolts. After installing a pair of wheels, the unit began to look like this.

Installed hub with wheels.

Change in appearance.

After converting all the car’s hubs from wedges to Euro hubs and tubeless tires and driving for about a month, it became possible to draw conclusions.

Of course, the maximum speed has increased slightly. The load in the body of up to 15 tons did not affect the appearance of the wheels at all. Flattened wheels are a thing of the past. I completely forgot what a torn wedge is when driving over construction potholes. The cameras and flipper no longer reminded of themselves. The tire fitters accepted the car without any questions. In a word, the wheel mounting and tire mileage are pure advantages. You can also remind about safety. There are no locking rings now, from which quite a few KAMAZ drivers have suffered.

You can also calculate approximate costs. All hubs and two front axle beams cost 40,000 rubles, wheel rims cost 20,000 rubles + 10 used tires cost 35,000 rubles. With the expectation that there will be enough tires for a year. Not counting the anthers and bolts, the total cost was 95,000 rubles. Of course, switching to tubeless and Euro hubs is not cheap, but it significantly reduces the time spent servicing the car.

In the future, if there is a shortage of tires, you can buy new ones, or if there is constant construction and the wheels break, then you can be content with used ones.

Here the owner, the gentleman, chooses himself

KamAZ-43118: technical characteristics

High cross-country ability without compromise

KamAZ-43118 is an off-road truck (6x6 wheel arrangement) with an onboard platform or a universal chassis, mass-produced by the Kama Automobile Plant in Naberezhnye Chelny since 1995. In 2011-2016 this model was the second best-selling among all the plant's vehicles, after KamAZ-65115. And at the end of 2017, KamAZ-43118 became the best-selling truck in the Russian Federation. This is not just a truck, but a multifunctional universal off-road platform for both transporting goods and people, and for installing various types of special equipment.

Design features of KamAZ-43118

Unlike many other KamAZ vehicles, on the 43118 the loading platform is installed close to the cabin, which makes it possible to make it as long and spacious as possible. The spare wheel, which is usually located on KamAZ trucks behind the cab, is located on the KamAZ-43118 at the rear under the frame. The cargo platform, equipped with metal folding sides, is produced in both a flatbed and a tilt version.

The vehicle's carrying capacity is 11 tons (in the new version, it was initially determined by the manufacturer at 10 tons). KamAZ-43118 was equipped with an automatic tire pressure control system. On this model, the tire pressure on all axles is maintained equal, and this eliminates the inconveniences that sometimes plague the operation of all-wheel drive trucks. Using auto-adjustment, you can reduce the pressure when overcoming difficult terrain, and change this parameter without leaving the cab.

The new version of KamAZ-43118 tires have a standard size of 425/85R21 and the indexing “J”, which implies a speed tolerance of 100 km/h. Another design feature of the modern version of the KamAZ-43118 is the hydraulic cab lift, without which tilting the high cab would be very problematic.

Consistently high cross-country ability of the KamAZ-43118 is ensured not only by the 6x6 wheel arrangement with installed cross-axle and cross-axle differentials, multi-layer rubber wheels, and an automatic tire inflation system, but also by a powerful diesel engine.

As additional equipment, KamAZ-43118 trucks can be equipped with a winch, a PTO for driving special superstructure units, and a towbar.

Engine

The truck is equipped with an eight-cylinder V-shaped diesel engine KamAZ-740 with a turbocharging and intercooling system for charge air. In 1995-2009 it was the power unit of the KamAZ-740.30-260 (Euro-2) model. And since 2010, the KamAZ-740.662-300 (Euro-4) engine has been installed on the car. A certain (small) number of cars were produced with imported Chinese-made diesel engines.

The working volume of the KamAZ-740.30-260 engine is 10.85 liters. Power of this engine: maximum useful - 180 kW, or 245 hp; nominal gross - 191 kW, or 260 hp. The maximum useful torque is 1060 N.m, or 108 kg cm, at a crankshaft speed of 1200…1400 rpm. The cylinder diameter and piston stroke have the same value: 120 mm. The compression ratio is 16.5.

The design of the main gears of all three KamAZ-4310 axles is the same, however, the assembled main gears of the front, intermediate and rear axles are not interchangeable. The main parts of the main gear KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 (Fig. 2) are: crankcase 1, drive shaft 22 with bearings, drive bevel gear 21, driven bevel gear 2, drive spur gear 3 with shaft and bearings, driven spur gear 14 .

Fig.2. Main gear and differential of the rear axle gearbox KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 1 - housing; 2 — driven bevel gear; 3 — driving cylindrical gear; 4, 6, 10, 18, 20 — tapered roller bearings; 5 — cup of bearings; 7, 19 - adjusting washer; 8, 17 — shims; 9 — adjusting nut; 11 — differential cup; 12 — cross; 13 — semi-axial gear; 14 — driven cylindrical gear; 15 - roller bearing; 16 — gasket; 21 — driving bevel gear; 22 - drive shaft; 23 — bearing cover; 24 - stopper. The intermediate and rear axle housing of KamAZ-4310 is attached to the bridge beam with a horizontal flange using studs located on the outside. There are grooves on the inner walls of the crankcase, and in the walls there are channels for the passage of oil to the bearings. There is a filler plug on top of the crankcase; the control and drain plugs are located on the axle crankcase. The drive shaft 22, together with the drive bevel gear 21 mounted on its splines, rotates in the crankcase on two bevel bearings 18 and 20 and one cylindrical roller bearing. The front tapered bearing 18 is located in the cup, the rear bearing 20 is installed in the crankcase bore. With inner rings, bearings 18 and 20 are pressed onto the shank of drive gear 21. A flange is installed on shaft 22 for connecting the cardan drive; the shaft exit from the crankcase is sealed with a rubber cuff and an oil deflector. The driven bevel gear 2 is mounted on a shaft manufactured integrally with the driving cylindrical gear 3. The supports of this shaft are two tapered bearings 4 and 6 located in the cup, and a cylindrical roller bearing 15 installed in the crankcase boss. The driven spur gear 14 is attached to the differential cups with bolts. The main gear of the Kamaz-4310, 43114, 43118 intermediate axle has a through drive shaft; flanges are installed at both ends for connecting cardan shafts. The main gear of the Kamaz-4310 front axle gearbox is attached to the bridge beam with a flange located in a vertical plane; the drive shaft here is non-passing and its inner end rests on a cylindrical roller bearing located inside the crankcase. When the drive shaft rotates, torque is transmitted from the drive bevel gear to the driven gear, then to shaft 4 and the drive spur gear, from where through the gearing to the driven spur gear and differential. In a bevel gear pair, the torque changes in magnitude and direction, while a cylindrical gear pair changes the torque only in magnitude. Lubrication of the main gear of the Kamaz-4310 drive axle gearbox is carried out by splashing. The crankcases of the intermediate and rear axles are filled with 7 liters each, and the front axle crankcase is filled with 4.8 liters of oil. Adjusting the main gear of the KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 axle gearbox It is not recommended to disassemble and adjust the main gear of the KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 rear axle gearbox unless necessary. Bevel gears must be operated until they are completely worn out. If during operation the lateral clearance in the meshing of the bevel gears increases, adjustment should not be made, since this will disrupt the correct meshing of the bevel gears. If the increase in the lateral clearance in the meshing of the bevel gears is a consequence of wear of the tapered roller bearings, i.e. If an axial gap appears in the engagement, then the tapered bearings are adjusted. The bearings are adjusted when the main gear of the KamAZ-4310 gearbox is removed from the bridge and disassembled into components. Tapered bearings are adjusted with a slight preload; axial play is not allowed in them. Adjustment of the tapered bearings of the Kamaz-4310, 43114, 43118 drive cylindrical gear is carried out by selecting the thickness of two washers 19, installed between the inner rings of the bearings. The correctness of the adjustment is checked by the amount of torque required to rotate the shaft in the bearings. This value should be in the range of 0.8... 1.6 N. Adjustment of the tapered bearings of the Kamaz-4310 drive spur gear shaft is carried out by selecting the thickness of two washers 7 installed between the inner rings of these bearings. The torque required to rotate the shaft of the drive spur gear after adjustment should be 1.0...3.5 N. After adjusting the preload of the bearings, the Kamaz-4310 main drive units are installed in the crankcase and the lateral clearance and contact patch of the bevel pair are adjusted. The lateral clearance equal to 0.2...0.35 mm and the contact patch between the teeth of the bevel gears are regulated by selecting the thickness of the gasket package 8 and 17, installed under the bevel bearing cups. To check the correct engagement along the contact patch, the teeth of the drive gear are painted and turned by hand in both directions while simultaneously braking the driven gear by hand. The stain remaining on the teeth of a heavy gear should have a length equal to approximately 2/3 of the length of the tooth and be located in the middle part of the tooth. The driving and driven bevel gears are selected into sets at the factory, ground in and branded, indicating the serial number of the set. Therefore, disassembly of these parts is not permitted. Differential of the drive axle KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 The differentials of all three axles KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 are conical, symmetrical, installed in the main gear housings on two tapered bearings each. The axle differential consists of two cups 11, a cross 12, four satellites with support washers, two semi-axial gears 13 with washers. The differential cups are connected to each other and to the driven spur gear to form the differential housing. The crosspiece has four spikes with which it is clamped between the cups; The flats on the crosspiece tenons serve to allow oil to pass through. The satellites are bevel gears mounted on the spikes of the spider. A bronze bushing is pressed into the satellite hole. A spherical support washer is installed between the Kamaz-4310, 43114, 43118 differential housing and the back part of the satellite. The semi-axial gears are placed in cups with their hubs and are connected to the axle shafts by splines. Flat support washers are installed between the cups and the semi-axial gears. Each side gear is in constant mesh with all four satellites. The operation of the differential of the KamAZ-4310 bridge is as follows. When a car moves straight on a level road, the wheels of one axle travel the same paths and, therefore, rotate at the same angular speed. All differential parts of the Kamaz-4310, 43114, 43118 axle rotate around a common axis at the same speed as the wheels; the satellites do not rotate around the axes. Torque is transmitted from the driven spur gear to the differential cups, then to the spider and satellites, which with their teeth act with equal force on the teeth of the side gears, causing them to rotate. Since the radii of the side gears are the same, the torque on the side gears will be the same. Thus, the torque between the wheels of the differential is distributed equally, which is why it is called symmetrical. When turning a corner, for example, to the left, the right wheels travel a longer distance than the left ones, therefore, they must rotate faster than the left ones. The Kamaz-4310, 43114, 43118 axle differential provides this opportunity. In this case, all differential parts rotate around a common axis and at the same time the satellites rotate around their axes, slowing down the rotation of the left side gear and accelerating the rotation of the right side gear. In this case, as much as the rotation of the left wheels slows down, the speed of rotation of the right wheels increases. If we neglect the internal friction in the differential (and it is insignificant), then the torque in this case is distributed equally. When a Kamaz-4310 vehicle slips, one wheel hits a slippery road. Due to poor traction, this wheel begins to slip and rotate faster than the second wheel. The differential contributes to this. When the left wheel is completely stopped, for example, the right wheel rotates twice as fast as the differential cups. To rotate a slipping wheel on a slippery road, a slight torque is required due to the differential’s ability to distribute torque equally; the second non-slip wheel receives the same insignificant torque. A non-slipping wheel is not able to develop the necessary traction force, move the car and continue moving. Thus, when driving on slippery roads, the differential reduces the vehicle's maneuverability. Adjustment of differential bearings KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 is carried out with a slight preload using nuts 24. The correctness of the adjustment is checked by the amount of deformation of the crankcase when tightening the adjusting nuts. Pre-tighten the bolts securing the 23 bearing caps to a torque of 100...120 N, then by tightening the adjusting nuts, ensure such a tension in the bearings that the distance between the ends of the bearing caps increases by 0.1...0.15 mm. Axle shafts and beams of bridges KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 Axle shafts KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 are completely unloaded, i.e. transmit only torque and do not perceive vertical, longitudinal and transverse forces. The axle shafts are located in the casings of the bridge beams (Fig. 1). The inner end of the Kamaz-4310, 43114, 43118 axle shaft has splines with which it is connected to the differential side gear, the outer end ends with a flange with which the axle shaft is attached to the wheel hub 3 using studs and nuts. To center the axle shaft relative to the hub, split conical bushings are installed in the flange holes. The axle shaft has a neck for installing a block of oil seals 16 for supplying air to the tire, as well as radial and axial drilling for the passage of air to the tire valve 24. The output of the axle shaft from the bridge beam is sealed with an oil seal 9. The beams of the KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 bridges are used to transfer the weight of the sprung parts to the wheels and transmission of longitudinal, transverse and vertical forces from the wheels to the frame. The front axle housing is molded integrally with the left short casing, the right casing is pressed into the crankcase and held in place by rivet welding. At the ends of the beams of the rear and intermediate axles KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118, round flanges 14 are welded (see Fig. 1) for attaching the wheel axles. Brackets for attaching rear suspension parts are welded to the axle housings of the same axles of all three cars. The housings of the axle shafts of the front axles of KamAZ-4310 end with round flanges, to which the ball joints of the steering knuckles are attached. Front axle parts KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118

The Kamaz-4310, 43114, 43118 steering knuckle provides the ability to turn the front steered wheels. It consists of a ball joint 8 and (Fig. 3) a housing with two covers (top and bottom), a pivot pin 3, fastening parts and seals. The ball joint is installed in the beam of the KamAZ-4310 bridge and is attached to it with pins; two kingpins are pressed and welded into its spherical surface. The Kamaz-4310 steering knuckle body is mounted on kingpins on tapered bearings. The lower bearing is closed by a cover 11, the upper bearing cover is integral with the swing arm 7. Adjusting shims are installed between the steering knuckle housing and the covers. Trunnion 6 is attached to the steering knuckle body with pins together with the support disk 16 of the brake mechanism. In the recess of the axle there is a block of air supply seals, and there are also holes for the passage of air to the tire valve 2. The tapered bearings of the Kamaz-4310, 43114, 43118 king pins are lubricated with the lubricant that is placed inside the ball joint to lubricate the constant velocity joint. Adding grease is done through the grease nipple in the upper bearing cover; the lubricant must be in a heated state, and the lubricant is replenished until it flows through the hole closed by plug 10. The lubricant is retained and prevented from contaminating the internal cavity of the Kamaz-4310 steering knuckle by a rubber cuff and a felt ring enclosed in metal clips. Adjustment of the tapered bearings of the steering knuckle KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 is carried out by preload; axial play in the bearings is not allowed. The bearings are adjusted by removing the spacers from under the top and bottom covers. Correct adjustment is checked using a dynamometer based on the force required to turn the fist. This force should be 20...30N. When checking, the bearings should be lubricated, the axle shaft removed, the bearing cap nuts tightened, and the steering knuckle seals removed. The pivots are installed in a ball joint with an inclination of 6° in the transverse plane and 1°45 in the longitudinal plane of the vehicle. This installation of pins increases the stability of the vehicle and helps it maintain the given direction of movement. Constant velocity joints Kamaz-4310, 43114, 43118 Constant velocity joints (CV joints) KamAZ-4310, 43114, 43118 are cam-type, installed in the drive on the front steered wheels, located inside the steering knuckles (see Fig. 4) of the front axle. The Kamaz-4310, 43114, 43118 CV joint consists of two forks 1 and 5, two knuckles 2 and 4 and a disk 3. When turning and rotating the wheel, the knuckles rotate relative to the forks and at the same time relative to the disk, which ensures the transmission of rotation from the inner fork to the outer fork with the same angular speed. Clutch and gearbox

The clutch is diaphragm, single-disk, with a hydraulic drive - pneumatic booster. The updated version of the truck uses the same clutch system, but manufactured by ZF&SACHS, model MFZ-430.

After modernization on the KamAZ-43118, the gearbox also became a ZieFovskaya, model ZF-9S1310. This is a nine-speed manual transmission. It can only be called imported in part: in recent years, KamAZ has established its own production of ZF gearboxes under license. Trucks of earlier years of production are equipped with KamAZ’s own ten-speed gearbox (5 speeds with a reduction range).

The transfer case on KamAZ-43118 is mechanical, two-stage with a locking center differential and pneumatic control. The gear ratios are: 1.692 – main gear (low) and 0.917 – second gear (high). The final drive ratio is 5.94 or 6.53.

Brakes, wheels, electrical equipment

The brake system is equipped with a pneumatic drive. The diameter of the brake drum is 400 mm. The width of the brake linings is 140 mm. The total area of the brake linings is 6300 cm2. A spare brake system is also provided as a safety system in case of failure of the main system. It is controlled similarly to the parking brake.

By activating the backup brake system, the driver can slow down on slippery roads by moving the handle approximately a third of the way up. With further ascent, the remaining brakes of the road train are activated.

The auxiliary braking system is activated by a special button. It helps you calmly overcome long descents as part of a road train. The auxiliary system is designed to operate without changing gears (in one gear in effect at the time of its operation). The mechanism also reduces the risk of brake overheating.

The truck wheels are disc. The rim size is 12.2-20.9 (310-533). Tires are pneumatic, with pressure regulation.

The voltage of the on-board electrical network is 24 V. There are two batteries installed, type “ST-190” V/Ah, 12 V/190 Ah. Generator – 28 V / 2000 W.

Cabin KamAZ-43118

The car is equipped with a cabin located above the engine, including one with a high roof and a full-fledged sleeping place. During the restyling carried out in 2010, cabin comfort was significantly increased.

Currently, any version of this car is equipped with a soft driver's seat with air suspension and mechanical adjustments. As additional options for the KamAZ-43118 cab, heated seats and air conditioning are offered.

However, as numerous reviews confirm, the sound insulation of the new cabin leaves much to be desired. There is a constant hum during operation.

The cost of the KamAZ-43118 truck

The price for the new KamAZ-43118 starts at 3,300,000 rubles (on-board). KamAZ-43118 with any special equipment on the chassis (cranes and crane-manipulators, log carriers, crew buses, etc.) cost from 4,500,000 rubles and above. Gearbox KAMAZ 43118 front axle

One of the most important transmission units is the KAMAZ 43118 gearbox. This element transmits and converts torque from the crankshaft. A distinctive feature of the mechanism is the number of teeth. This quantity is determined by the qualities of the machine. The greater the off-road qualities of the car, the more the number of mechanism teeth increases accordingly.

The price of the KAMAZ 43118 gearbox depends on the number of teeth and assembly option. You can see the latest price in our price list:

The KAMAZ 43118 front axle gearbox , as a rule, suffers breakdowns and malfunctions in rare cases. But this does not exclude the possibility that the mechanism may fail when you least expect it. To be able to prevent the breakdown of the unit or eliminate the malfunction that has arisen, you should be aware of the principle of operation of the part and anticipate the most likely breakdowns.

Features of the element

The KAMAZ 43118 gearbox is distinguished by its simplicity of function. It changes the torque of the crankshaft to transmit it to the wheels. For example, if the driven gear has a larger diameter and the drive gear has a smaller diameter, as a result, the rotation speed of the driven shaft decreases, thereby increasing the torque. The direction of torque transmission is changed by means of a hypoid or bevel gear. The location of the driven and drive shafts in such gears may be perpendicular or another position in relation to each other.

How to determine if a unit is broken

The KAMAZ 43118 front axle gearbox breaks quite rarely. However, the intensity and power of the loads placed on this mechanism lead to malfunctions still occurring. As a rule, the first sign of trouble is an unpleasant knocking sound while the vehicle is moving. But unnatural noise is caused by malfunction of many elements of the car. To determine whether the KAMAZ 43118 front axle gearbox is faulty, you must use the following recommendations:

1. When a part is faulty, an uncharacteristic sound occurs when vehicles move at 18-20 km/h. You should systematically accelerate the car to 80-86 km/h, while listening carefully and remembering at what speeds the noise disappears and appears. Then, without using the brakes, using the engine, we lower the speed to the original 20 km/h. When the sound appeared and disappeared during a decrease in speed at the same marks as during acceleration, the conclusion arises that the KAMAZ 43118 front axle gearbox is clearly faulty.

2. You should increase the speed to 80 km/h, use neutral gear, and turn off the engine. When there are no extraneous noises during these actions, but they arise again under load, this unit is damaged.

3. When the car is stationary, you need to start it and give it a good “throttle.” The absence of the now incomprehensible sound noticed when using the first test method once again confirms that the KAMAZ 43118 front axle gearbox is faulty.

As noted earlier, the KAMAZ 43118 front axle gearbox is under constant maximum load while the vehicle is moving. It is he who performs the most complex function - transmitting torque from the cardan to the wheel. Consequently, the part requires timely maintenance and careful attention in order to prevent expensive machine repairs. When there are even slight assumptions that the KAMAZ 43118 gearbox is broken, there is no need to hesitate and carry out a complete repair.
