Tractor Maz 5440: technical characteristics, device, description

MAZ 5440 is a family of Belarusian truck tractors, which is produced at the Minsk Automobile Plant.
This model is very popular in Eastern Europe and Russia. In terms of production volume, MAZ 5440 is among the leaders among the products of the Minsk Automobile Plant. The model fully meets European requirements for trucks. It is again certified in Russia, where it is among the top best cargo transporters. In terms of design, technical characteristics and service life, the MAZ 5440 is a worthy competitor to Western European analogues.

General information

The history of the creation of the MAZ 5440 series began in the 1990s. After the collapse of the USSR, the Minsk Automobile Plant experienced great difficulties with orders. In this regard, we needed a car that would appeal to European consumers. To create a high-quality tractor and a special image, the Minsk Automobile Plant began to cooperate with the German concern MAN, a well-known manufacturer of trucks. As a result, in 1997 the company introduced a new car - MAZ 5440.

The main priority of the Minsk Automobile Plant was the European market, but the developers were well aware that the main buyer of the new product would be Russian consumers. That is why the MAZ 5440 had to simultaneously have significant quality and a moderate price. Many innovative solutions appeared in the design of the production version, but the cost of the model increased slightly. Almost immediately after the premiere, the MAZ 5440 was certified in the Russian Federation. The model has gained enormous popularity on the Russian market. Having become a serious competitor to KamAZ products, the Minsk truck, at least, did not lose in this competition.

The MAZ 5440 had noticeable advantages over Western tractors of a similar class. The reinforced suspension and considerable cost made the model a more profitable purchase. Thanks to its special design, the car could travel on poor quality roads for a long time. Without major repairs, the MAZ 5440 could survive a major overhaul. Manufacturers achieved compliance with the Euro-3 standard, which allowed the vehicle to carry out international transportation as part of a road train. The MAZ 5440 borrowed some design elements from MAN models, which were considered at that time one of the best in Europe. As a result, the successor to the MAZ 5432 has become more spacious, cozy and comfortable. Such changes had a positive impact on his popularity.

MAZ 5440 received not only an advanced design. The appearance of the car has become more attractive. It was made as similar as possible to its European counterparts. To reduce weight, high-strength plastic was used in the operator's cabin, and large mirrors were used to improve visibility. The tractor was equipped with one of several engines adapted for harsh working conditions. The engines were distinguished by their unpretentious operation and simplicity of design.

In 2000, the premiere of the modernized version of the MAZ 5440 took place. The A8 model became a breakthrough in the class of truck tractors. The combination of affordable cost, significant reliability, comfort and ease of driving has significantly increased the popularity of the car. Production of the A8 version ended in 2009. Currently, the Minsk Automobile Plant produces several modifications of the MAZ 5440 (A9, B9, M9 and others).

All versions of the family are designed for large cargo transportation of building materials, household chemicals and other types of cargo. MAZ 5440 is a reliable commercial vehicle that remains one of the best in its class.

Model history

MAZ-5440 is a truck tractor from the Minsk Automobile Plant with a 4x2 wheel arrangement.
Factory tests of the car took place in 1996. On March 11, 1997, the first production MAZ-5440 tractors were released, and at the end of 1997, two more versions were added to them: 54402 and 544021, which were more consistent with the European requirements for long-haul transportation.

Since 2008, the MAZ-5440 has been produced with a new, restyled cabin, made in the style of modern European trucks, and is called “Space”.

Since 2014, when the Minsk Automobile Plant turned 70 years old, a version with the Euro-6 environmental class was put into production: the completely new MAZ-5440M9.

Reviews from owners and drivers

  • The Maz 5440 can be considered another “sub-Mercedes”, as is the case with the Kamaz 5490. As you can see, the Belarusian auto giant has followed the path of its Russian “brother”. After all, the car was equipped with a Mercedes engine and gearbox. The cabin design is clearly taken from Volvo, just look at the optics. The rear view mirrors appear to be borrowed from Iveco. Well, of course, it’s much easier to take a ready-made solution than to spend money on your own patented developments, and then be truly proud of the domestic auto industry. And yet, I must admit that even the idea of Maz somehow attracts me. After all, the quality has improved significantly compared to its predecessor. Of course, the design and comfort are significantly simplified in comparison with more expensive foreign cars. But compared to what it was, it’s just space. The 15-liter diesel engine produces 400 horsepower and consumes 35 liters per 100 km. Loading capacity is over 10 tons. The car is worthy of attention among those who do not want to spend money on Mercedes, Volvos, etc. There are no problems with spare parts, Maz’s maintainability is at an acceptable level.
  • I have a MAZ 5440 with a 15-liter engine that meets Euro 5 standards and produces about 400 horsepower. The productive diesel engine turned out to be very economical, despite the car belonging to the main-line class. Thus, the declared consumption of 35 liters corresponds to a Kamaz with similar cargo capabilities. The Maza cabin is not resistant to corrosion, so it quickly rusts in those places that are most exposed to reagents. The top also shows signs of corrosion. It needs to be repainted periodically, otherwise it will completely rot and you will have to look for a new cabin. The claims can be nullified only in the case of galvanized doors and a fuel tank, which are really made to last - this would be the case in all places. In general, the tank and doors do not rust. The German engine does not bother you - it does not overheat, does not trip or knock, and is also relatively quiet. The gearbox – 16-speed ZF – shifts smoothly and without jerking. There are also no complaints about its reliability. The maximum speed of my version is limited to 85 km/h, although on descents you can accelerate to 90 km/h. In any case, there will be problems with overtaking. The driving position is specific. The seat itself is somehow flat and hard, without lateral support. It's so loose that I can't help but feel like I'm sitting in a tractor. The factory steering wheel has a very thin, slippery and uncomfortable rim, so it had to be altered. Front optics are also one of the many weak points of the Maz 4490, which wants to appear like a Mercedes only in appearance. It is advisable to change your headlights every year, otherwise dim light can cause an accident. When empty, the car consumes 27 liters. Engine oil must be changed every 45 thousand km.
  • I have been working on MAZ 5440 since 2013. Our transport company has several such vehicles, and we also have a Kamaz 5490. My place of work is mainly at a construction site, so I don’t travel outside the city. In the first three years, the mileage was 160 thousand km. As a workhorse, the 5440 suits me quite well, but I have questions about comfort, reliability and ride quality. There is no second rear axle, which makes geometric cross-country ability very difficult. The 400-horsepower 15-liter diesel engine pulls well from low revs. However, already at 150 thousand km the turbine had to be replaced - I don’t know, maybe this is due to the harsh operating conditions. The original was very expensive, so we decided to install an analogue, which made it harder to climb hills, even when empty! The original turbine provided better thrust even at the end of its life. The particulate filter burned out, well, God bless him. Service is not inconvenient. The filler neck remains under the cabin - inconvenient, but the dipstick for checking the oil level is brought out. The 8-speed manual transmission did not cause any problems during operation - it does not overheat and has clear and intelligible shifts, and also reveals the potential of the diesel engine well. Fuel consumption reaches 35 liters under load. A powerful 4.5 kW Pramotronic autonomous system was installed. It heats up like a blast furnace. In winter, you can sleep with the window slightly open. It is comfortable to drive due to the high seating position. The soft seat is anatomically shaped, but after a dozen hours of work, my back still gets stiff.
  • I have a Maz 5440 from 2010. At the time of purchase in 2015, the mileage was 220 thousand km. Now the actual mileage is 420 thousand km - or there will be more. Not a bad truck that knows how to make money! It copes admirably with the transportation of containers weighing 30 tons. Such a heavy load is felt well even in the case of a powerful 400-horsepower 15-liter diesel engine. It must be admitted that not every foreign analogue is able to cope with the delivery of a 30-ton container. Shifting into gears is easy and effortless, especially after adding fresh oil to the transmission. With 20 tons of load, the result is 37 liters per 100 km. Under load, the diesel engine is very noisy, which is natural. But the main thing is that it is not prone to overheating, which indicates a safety margin. My car was originally equipped with Michelin tires, which I later replaced with Sava tires. Alas, with these wheels the car yaws and floats on the road - handling has deteriorated dramatically. As a result, I still splurged on Michelin Multiway and everything worked out. The tractor is equipped with a Webasto heater, as well as a 4 kW dry heater. At minus 20, you can open the windows. The factory heater is very efficient; I did not modify it.
  • Maz 5440 is a noble Belarusian hard worker, endowed with a wide range of advantages and disadvantages, however, as it should be at an adequate price when compared with more expensive foreign analogues. The car rusts quickly, especially the body. It’s impossible to completely avoid saffron milk caps - you can see the costs of the Soviet automobile industry, which, you see, are difficult to adapt to modern standards. Breakdowns also happen on foreign cars, which are also more expensive to maintain. At the 590th thousand I had to rebuild the engine - it was difficult, but I somehow figured it out according to the instructions. Spare parts are available, and a turner I know helped me bring the car to life. The diesel engine consumes 30-35 liters per 100 km.
  • I work on a MAZ 5440 with a Yaroslavl 7511 engine coupled with a ZF gearbox. Currently the mileage is 450 thousand km. The flight is normal - I make do with scheduled repairs and enjoy the power and acceleration potential of the 400-horsepower engine. But I must admit, the truck turned out to be very “raw” in the literal sense of the word. So, in winter it blows too much from under the doors - it turns out that not only old, but also new Mazas suffer from this. Apparently the reason is weak seals. Because of the air bags, the cabin sways a lot when driving on rough roads. Despite the fact that the shock absorbers were replaced for the second time, stability still did not increase. Sometimes you have to unload in two stages. The fact is that if you “dump” a load from behind (I have a semi-trailer), then the suspension will fall and it will not rise to its original position. Therefore, unloading takes place in two stages. Regarding the engine, there is no need to complain about it at all - the injectors are original, although the odometer shows 450 thousand km. It consumes about 35 liters, I also fill it with oil in reasonable quantities. But the impression is still ambiguous. I'd rather buy a used MAN.

Engine

For the MAZ 5440 series, power plants from the Yaroslavl Motor Plant are used that comply with environmental standards of European standards. For the basic version, the YaMZ-650 unit is used - a V-shaped eight-cylinder engine with turbocharging and liquid cooling. It runs on diesel fuel, which allows you to achieve significant savings on fuel. This unit complies with the Euro-4 standard. With careful operation and proper maintenance, the engine can operate up to 800,000 km without major repairs. A modern cooling system allows operation at any temperature. To start the engine at sub-zero temperatures, an engine heating system is provided. The YaMZ-650 unit is considered one of the most reliable in the line of the Yaroslavl Motor Plant.

Characteristics of the YaMZ-650 motor:

  • working volume – 14.8 l;
  • rated power - 400 hp;
  • maximum torque – 152 Nm.

Some versions of the car are equipped with other YaMZ engines, and again the MAN D2866 LF15 and Mercedes-Benz OM 471 engines.

Malfunctions

The car is unpretentious, stylish and reliable. However, it is not without its shortcomings. So, according to reviews from drivers, almost immediately after purchasing and starting to use the car, the frame, cabin, and bumper become covered with rust, so it is recommended to tint the car. In addition, the headlights cause criticism. After a year of driving a car, they practically stop shining - the lensed optics burn out and require replacement.

Due to the fact that a number of models are equipped with foreign-made engines, transmissions, and chassis elements, as a rule, these components are practically “indestructible.”

Attention! When driving a MAZ-5440, the rear axle shock absorbers, front suspension stabilizer bushings and rear gearbox seals must be replaced.

Device

The MAZ 5440 received serious differences from its predecessors (both in design and construction). The truck operator's cabin has been modernized. Minsk developers borrowed some technical solutions from their colleagues from MAN. As a result, the operator's cabin has increased in size and has become more elegant. Externally, the car began to resemble European models. To protect elements from corrosion, a special painting technology was used. The chassis began to be painted again.

Drivers now have many amenities that allow them to comfortably make long-distance flights. The operator's cabin of the MAZ 5440 has a pneumatic seat with many additional options. There were 1 or 2 sleeping places inside. The space under the sleeping bag could be used to store small items (a small refrigerator, heater or fireplace). again, wardrobes appeared in the operator's cabin. The dashboard has undergone a global modernization, receiving modern buttons and sensors. This made it more convenient and informative. A new steering system and electric windows were installed in the operator's cabin. again, a tachograph, an on-board computer, an audio system and a climate control system appeared. The suspension of the operator's cabin was made pneumatic (for some models - spring).

MAZ 5440 received a standard 4 by 2 layout with rear wheel drive. The rear suspension became pneumatic, and parabolic leaf springs were used as the front suspension. For reliable operation of the car’s elements and components, the developers have included in the design a variety of equipment from European manufacturers. Thus, almost all electronics were foreign-made. This slightly increased the cost of the car, but had a positive effect on the quality.

MAZ 5440 was equipped with several types of gearboxes. The transmission from the Yaroslavl Motor Plant again became the base one. A 9-speed manual transmission was installed on most modifications. again, the car was available with LiaZ and ZF-Ecosplit 16S gearboxes (9 and 16 gears).

MAZ 5440 received separate brakes. Braking of the front and rear wheels was performed by separate systems, which improved the efficiency of the process. again, the car was equipped with a speed limiter, spoiler, seat belts, ABS and other devices. The operator's cab heater and ASR were offered to consumers. These elements were installed at an additional cost.

Peculiarities

Over the entire period of mass production, the MAZ 5440 has received a large number of different consumer reviews, both positive and negative.

Advantages

As many owners say, this truck is a completely reliable and repairable tractor. The cost of spare parts for it is more affordable than for foreign analogues, which again attracts the attention of consumers. In addition, the power unit also received a lot of flattering reviews. According to him, the engine was quite powerful and torquey. A tractor with a load can climb uphill without any problems. In terms of maintenance, the Minsk model is quite simple and straightforward. There is enough space in the cabin for comfortable work. This parameter was also influenced by convenient controls, clear sensors and instruments, and adjustable seats, thanks to which the driver can choose the most comfortable position for himself, taking into account his body size.

Flaws

But besides all this, the truck also has a number of disadvantages. First of all, it is worth noting its tendency to corrosion. Almost all structural elements begin to rust over time, but it is the cabin that is most susceptible to this process. The cabin of the model not only quickly rusts, but can also quickly rot. The reason for this is the dubious quality of the metal and poor processing, including painting.

Technically, there are also shortcomings. Some owners note that everything breaks down, from wiring to more serious units. It should be noted that it is also mentioned that the gearbox often does not fulfill its declared service life. But this, of course, can be influenced by the operating conditions themselves, since some drivers maintain proper operation for a long time, while for others it’s the other way around.

Price of new and used MAZ 5440

MAZ 5440 is a high-quality car for not a lot of money. Its cost is noticeably lower than most competitors. In stock configuration, the price tag for the car starts from 2.5 million rubles. More top-end versions will cost 3-3.6 million rubles.

There are again many used options on the Russian market. You can buy a used MAZ 5440 for 700,000-1,500,000 rubles. There are cheaper offers, but there is a significant risk of buying a car with serious problems.

Renting a MAZ 5440 will cost 7,000 rubles per shift.

Tires 315/80 R22.5

The loads with their rollers rest against the end of the coupling 27, which, through the thrust bearing and the heel 37, transmits the force of the loads to the power lever 43, suspended together with the double-arm lever 5 on the axis 11. The MAZ 6430 is constantly being refined and improved, but today it can be placed in one row with such long-distance flagships as the Mercedes Benz Actros and Scania 3S.
