Car history

Trucks with four axles and increased suspension strength are in great demand around the world. The countries of the former CIS are no exception. The only problem is that European representatives are not cheap, and from the numerous selection of “Chinese” ones it is difficult to find a reliable option. Therefore, in 2007, the Minsk Automobile Plant began production of the MAZ-6516 truck model. Despite the fact that previously excellent trucks were produced on three axles, a significant increase in the vehicle’s performance became obvious after the changes. The vehicle is a dump truck with a hinged rear cover and improved working systems.

A ticket to life?

And now the best news: the MAZ-5440M9 has become a production vehicle. The first “5th generation” truck tractor was shipped to the Brest region, to the carrier... OJSC “Baranovichi Bus Park”. The fact is that in order to develop, the company was actively involved in international cargo transportation in the following directions: Denmark - Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland - Belarus. So a brand new tractor, with an unfamiliar appearance, is just what is needed for hidden advertising.

So now the Minsk Automobile Plant proudly bears the title of the first manufacturer in the CIS to provide the customer with a truck with a Euro 6 engine. At first, the new truck tractors will be produced in limited quantities - the order portfolio for the coming months has already been formed. And full registration on the assembly line will depend on demand.

For now, the new product will be tested by Belarusian carriers, including on flights to Europe. Whether they will actually risk walking at least as far as Moscow or not is not clear. In any case, the fact that MAZ has launched the “5th generation” into series is a victory. You see, the time will come for Russian drivers to enjoy its fruits.

Specifications

The MAZ-6516 car is equipped with all the necessary systems, and the design has been brought to modern traditions. But all this would not be necessary if not for the technical performance of the engine units. Motors produced at the Yaroslavl Metallurgical Plant have been proving their practicality for many years; in addition, other manufacturers of working elements throughout Russia complement the general understanding of the machine’s mechanisms. Trucks of various modifications from “6516” were produced with two types of wheeled chassis characteristics:

The rear suspension is a multi-leaf spring-balancer with a vertical ladder arrangement. Fastenings between the frame and the suspension are provided with bolts made of extra-strong steel. The rear and middle axles are equipped with anti-roll bars. On the move, the work of the stabilizers is very noticeable: when turning, the dump truck has a slight roll, even if it is fully loaded. Despite this reaction, no bouncing is observed, and in general the suspension operates very smoothly.

The ability of fastening bolts to withstand increased loads is confirmed by special tests carried out by specialists.

Additional properties. The standard set of systems includes ABS and PBS. An on-board computer can also be optionally installed, which allows you to monitor the operation of all mechanisms and control fuel consumption.

Engine and gearbox

Due to the high complexity of assembly and delivery of different models of parts, manufacturers decided to make two assemblies based on the characteristics of the wheeled chassis:

  • 2030/2620/1400 mm;
  • 1600/2990/1400 mm.

Accordingly, this also affects the selection of engine models.

For base No. 1, there are 4 parameter names on which the engine type depends:

  • 651A9;
  • 651A8;
  • 651669.

Their main characteristics are similar, so the motor system can be described by choosing average values. For this indicator, parameter 651A9 with the YaMZ-650.10 engine model is suitable. Its horsepower is 420, while its kilowatt power is 303. The type of environmental class on all engine models is Euro 3. Consumption on this engine model is 40.5 liters per hundred kilometers, and the difference in consumption between engine models is within 1-3 liters. The maximum speed of freight transport when loaded is 85 km/h with the limiter installed. If the limiter is removed, the speed reaches +95 km/h.

All engine types of the first configuration are equipped with a 12JS200TA gearbox. The number of gears at the gearbox is 12:

  • 10 forward gears;
  • 2 gears for moving backwards.

As an example of assembling a second base, it is worth taking parameter 651669, on which a German-made MAN D2066LF01 engine is installed. The maximum horsepower in this configuration is 434, with 316 kilowatts. The environmental class of the second assembly, depending on the parameter, is Euro-3, Euro-4, Euro-5. Fuel consumption when using a German-assembled engine is 40.5 liters per hundred kilometers, and the difference between other models is 1-2 liters. In the presence of a speed limiter, vehicle acceleration is 85 km/h. With the limiter removed, the dump truck accelerates to 95 km/h, but this is not the limit. At speeds above 95 km/h, the systems begin to experience excessive loads that are not recommended for transport.

Together with the German-made engine, a 12-speed gearbox model ZF16S2525TO is used. 10 gears for forward movement, and 2 gears for reverse movement. The drive axle has a gear ratio of 5.33, as in the case of the first modification of the dump truck.

Generation V

“They greet you by their clothes...” For a truck, the “clothes” is the cabin. Now MAZ has developed three main versions for the new generation: short with a low roof, long with a low roof, long with a high roof. The purpose of each of them, I think, is clear without much explanation. Visually, they are all designed in the same style, so that the exterior of the family can be considered complete.

I’ll say right away that, alas, there is no option for a cabin with a flat floor - technological production limitations are to blame. But even in the budget version without a sleeping compartment, there is a folding shelf on the back wall, allowing you to spend the night inside in case of emergency.

Compared to the prototype, the “flagship” cabin installed on a truck tractor was significantly modified in terms of interior. Now inside there is a completely new front panel, a multiplex control system with an electronic instrument cluster from ACTIA and a built-in on-board computer, climate control, cruise control and a multimedia system - all included as standard. In principle, the front panel is similar to other prototypes, so it can rightfully be considered universal.

If we talk about the cabin of the previous generation, then thanks to the rearrangement of the interior in the MAZ-5440M9 there was room for a refrigerator and a pair of 200-liter luggage compartments with access both from the street and from the inside. At the same time, the size of the sleeping shelves has increased, as well as the space for the driver and his partner. By the way, the driver is now sitting on an ISRI chair. Sound insulation has been significantly improved, and the manufacturer’s statement about the presence of four speakers (two on each side) no longer looks like an “empty sound”, both literally and figuratively.

However, the factory workers themselves link the “5th generation” not to the new cabin, but to the Euro 6 environmental class engine. Thus, the MAZ-5440M9 truck tractor and the MAZ-6516M9 dump truck are equipped with a 476-horsepower inline six Mercedes-Benz OM471. The use of engines with a “three-pointed star” has become a unique feature of MAZ - trucks with this configuration are considered very reliable by carriers and are respected. In addition, the Germans are very scrupulous in choosing partners, and the fact that the cooperation between MAZ and Mercedes-Benz has been going on for 20 years already speaks volumes. By the way, the robotic gearboxes here are also German – Mercedes-Benz G281-12 New AMT.

But on the third prototype the power plant is different. This is a 10.7-liter OM 470 engine with 428 hp. and a G230-16 gearbox with SWR water retarder. Considering that after testing, the MAZ-6312M7 chassis acquired a dump truck platform and received the new name MAZ-6501M7, such a selection of units is quite logical.

To achieve Euro 6 standards, both engines use Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

For the new generation of MAZs, the installation of an electronic braking system (ABS and ASR), exchange rate stability system (ESP), central locking with remote control and power windows is provided. In addition, they will be optionally equipped with a GPS navigator, lane keeping systems (LDWS) and obstacle detection emergency braking (AEBS). MAZ – is that you?!!

The machine has the following dimensions:

  • height at the maximum point is 3650 mm;
  • width – 2550 mm;
  • the total length of the dump truck is 8910 or 9000 mm, depending on the configuration;
  • cargo body length – 5790 mm;
  • cargo body height – 1600 mm;
  • body volume in any configuration – 21 m3;
  • the body has an inclination of up to 50 degrees.

The dimensions are close to international standards, so drivers do not have to get used to the new dimensions for a long time.

Loading platform

The main purpose of a 4-axle dump truck is to transport bulk, large and bulk cargo on roads of any category. That is why manufacturers have thought of two options for using the dump platform.

The first version is U-shaped, and the second model is rectangular, but in both cases the volume is 21 cubic meters. The carrying capacity with these characteristics is 25-27 tons. The loading platform is mounted on a hydraulic lift and has an automatically opening tailgate, which helps to quickly unload the dump truck.

Modifications

The MAZ-6516V9-480-000 dump truck has an 8x4 wheel arrangement, a load capacity of 26.9 tons, rear unloading, a YaMZ-651.10 engine, a scoop-shaped body, and a heated platform.

The cabin is two-seater, equipped with springs, four-point suspension with air springs. The engine has 6 cylinders, engine capacity is 11.12 l, fuel consumption is 30.5 l/100 km, engine life is 1,000,000 km. The gearbox has 12 forward and 1 reverse gears and can operate with heavy loads. A distinctive feature is the ease of maintenance and repair of the gearbox and replacement of parts. Drum brakes and pneumatic drive are installed.

Fuel tank capacity 300 l, heated fuel filter. The cab has a tool box. The axle ratio is 5.33. Additional equipment installed: tachograph, radio, liquid heating, air purification, awning. It is possible to modernize the truck.

Reviews from owners and drivers

  • I have a Maz 6430 tractor with a mileage of 330 thousand km. A car with a spacious interior, a driver's lift seat, but the passenger seat is bolted to the floor. Visibility is good. At the 30th thousand, the headlights took up half of the water, which led to the closure of the circuit. I had to change the fuse, and also disassemble and impregnate the seams with sealant. The electrical is so thin and not laid out properly. The relay with fuses is located under the cover on the dashboard. Already at the 10th thousand I had to go to the service center, because the fuses for the wiper washer system had already blown out. Fixed under warranty. Standard brushes do not “clean”, but simply make stains. Over time, a tagograph was installed - a useful thing, capable of reading the vehicle’s parameters throughout the entire route. The device takes into account two drivers at once and also builds a traffic schedule. On bumps, the suspension is so rough that sometimes you want to slow down. The fabric-based interior looks nice only in the photo. The front panel is made of hard and cheap plastic. There is a double sleeping bag. Conveniently, there are three adjustments for adjusting the sunroof. The 240-horsepower Maz accelerates well, but consumes 40 liters per 100 km. In general, you need to keep an eye on the car.
  • I have been working on MAZ 6430 for five years now. Minor problems started almost immediately. First of all, the antifreeze indicator came on - it turned out that the sensor had simply malfunctioned. Once in the pit (okay, at least not in the middle of a country route) I discovered a huge puddle of oil under the engine. The service fixed the problem under warranty. However, after that it turned out that the fuel tank was almost dry - all the fuel was drained in the workshop. There was a small scandal, after which the technicians filled it with some kind of fresh water, which is why we had to clean the entire fuel system, change all the filters, etc. The car began to have trouble starting, they repeatedly called a tow truck and dragged it back to the same workshop for repairs. The fuse blew, when replacing it another oil leak was discovered. As a result, the car broke down due to the crooked hands of the craftsmen. There is nothing to say about the car itself in terms of comfort and sound insulation - it’s something of the last century. A noisy engine and a buzzing gearbox, vibrations and extraneous sounds, aerodynamic noise - all this causes negative impressions.
  • I have a Maz 6430 from 2012. The car has 220 thousand km mileage. There have been minor and major technical problems, but with timely maintenance the tractor remains at full speed. I praise the high-torque 240-horsepower diesel engine, which has only one drawback - high fuel and oil consumption. Perhaps the engine is the most reliable link in the MAZ 6430. Two years later, our company decided to purchase several more of these MAZs, which also showed their best side - they have been in operation since 2014, also with a decent mileage. This model is ideal for Russian operating conditions. I will note the energy-intensive suspension and decent cross-country ability on rough terrain. There is almost no shaking in the cabin due to the fact that the seat is mounted on an air cushion. There is good sound insulation, which came from the factory. Fuel consumption is about 40 liters per 100 km on average. The 240-horsepower diesel engine digests domestic fuel and oil well. The spark plugs do not burn out prematurely, and in winter you can be sure of uninterrupted starting. In summer, overheating is only possible in the red rev zone.

Features of operation

The main advantages of the truck include ease of driving (maneuvering) even off-road with a loaded body. The cabin has all the conditions for normal driving, because there is nothing distracting in it. Numerous devices greatly simplify driving in bad weather. The carrying capacity of the transport allows you to collect the maximum amount of building materials and this is facilitated not only by the chassis, but also by the correctly designed structure of the frame, which takes on part of the load.

The disadvantages include poor protection of the external parts of the dump truck. The absence of protective grilles on the headlights adds to the beauty of the body, but in reality, when driving on gravel or when working in a quarry, the risk of damaging them significantly increases. At night, such an accident can cause serious problems, so drivers install the bars themselves.

Peculiarities

The MAZ-6430 has a fairly comfortable cabin, especially the restyled models. Owners note excellent interior ergonomics, good build quality and an informative dashboard. I was also pleased with the presence of a folding table, a refrigerator, a gas stove and a comfortable sleeping place. In addition, the cabin has good sound insulation and an efficient heating system. It is also worth noting that the Belarusian car has a very modern appearance, reminiscent of many European analogues.

The Minsk Automobile Plant offers a large number of modified versions, differing not only in power indicators, but also in load capacity. Thanks to this, consumers can choose a model taking into account personal preferences and purpose.

All engines are highly reliable. Their operational life is 800 thousand or one million kilometers, which is a very impressive figure. In addition, the engines have high power and excellent traction, available over a wide speed range.
