MAZ trailers

OJSC Minsk Automobile Plant is the largest enterprise in Belarus that produces heavy-duty automobile, bus, trolleybus and trailer vehicles. MAZ is known not only in the territory of the former Soviet Union, but also in foreign countries. Even during the transition period of the 90s, the enterprise was able to survive, after which it began to increase production capacity.

It is very important that MAZ vehicles work well in the conditions of the Far North, the Sahara and Karakum, the tropics, and mountains. This indicates versatility and a high level of reliability. At the moment, representatives of more than forty countries around the world want to buy MAZ.

In this case, much attention is paid to trailers. MAZ trailers guarantee that cargo will be delivered in large quantities by one vehicle.

Currently, MAZ produces the following types of equipment:

  • tractor units;
  • onboard vehicles;
  • medium-tonnage low-bed vehicles;
  • dump trucks;
  • timber trucks;
  • off-road vehicles;

MAZ trailers: from captured copies to secret developments. Showing rare archival photos

The dump trailer-5210 with a payload of 40 tons had a side unloading with a lifting angle of the 20 cc platform of 50 degrees. In 1959, the printing house of the Minsk Automobile Plant printed the first leaflets with technical descriptions of MAZ car trailers and semi-trailers in circulations of 200–400 copies.
There are also thin black and white prospectuses of the first road trains, published by the printing house of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR. However, there is no information in printed form about military products, but they were produced! Design Bureau MAZ Already in 1947, work at Design Bureau MAZ was in full swing on trailer trains.
Today it is difficult to overestimate the information that in the 90s your humble servant was provided by the authorized representative of the Main Automotive Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Colonel Alexander Nikolaevich Guk and the head of military representative office No. 1233, Colonel Dmitry Dmitrievich Efimenko.
There is also information from the GKB (Head Design Bureau) trailer specialist Vitaly Petrovich Shishlo, engineer Yuri Semenovich Malinkovin, engineer retired colonel Yuri Sergeevich Lysov and other factory workers. The MAZ-5207V car trailer with a body measuring 4690x2500x1480 mm weighed 3400 kg and could carry 6000 kg of cargo. MAZ-5213 trailer with a carrying capacity of 6000 kg for transporting consumer goods in closed containers.
According to information from the factory museum, the team began preparatory work for the production of the trailer train on October 1, 1945.
In April 1946, the first three-ton models of the U2‑AP3 agricultural trailer were manufactured. It had a removable wooden platform and opening side and rear sides. Its tires, suspension and wheel hubs were unified with the UralZIS-355M truck. The heavy-duty trailer MAZ-5208 (1953) for the delivery of oversized heavy indivisible cargo with 14-ply tires in the amount of 26 pieces (24+2) transported up to 40 tons.
And on February 9, 1948, a convoy with the first samples left Minsk for Moscow new MAZ trailers.
It was a bow trip to the Ministry of Automotive Industry - for approval by higher authorities. Three and a half months later, on May 27, the Minsk Automobile Plant reported the production of the 5000th trailer! The MAZ-5214 van trailer with a carrying capacity of 5000 kg with a full load was towed at speeds of up to 50 km/h.
Non-disclosure agreement

The technical data of almost all army trailers and semi-trailers were classified: a potential enemy should not have guessed what and how they would move on the products of the Minsk Automobile Plant.
Factory workers involved in the production of army trailers signed a non-disclosure agreement to not disclose military secrets. MAZ veteran Ivan Nikolaevich Babaev (he has been at the plant since January 1950) took out such a subscription even under Stalin. The former leading designer would never have said a word about the technology being produced if the statute of limitations had not expired. And even then he didn’t reveal any secrets - he talked more about people than about technology. Tractor self-unloading trailer PTS-6 (MAZ-5227B) for transporting 6000 kg of bulk agricultural loads in field conditions. The MAZ-5202G trailer was capable of transporting 11 tons of cargo.
Among the first enthusiasts of trailer construction was the chief designer of the Minsk Automobile Plant (previously the chief designer of the Yaroslavl Automobile Plant) Georgy Mikhailovich Kokin.
Later he became the rector of the Belarusian Pedagogical Institute. His deputy in charge of cars was Arkady Nikolaevich Britovsky, who later went to the Kremenchug Automobile Plant. An important role in the chronicle of the enterprise was played by the deputy chief designer for trailers, Alexander Vyacheslavovich Friedrich, who received the academic degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences. And how can we not remember the head of the experimental workshop, Nikolai Ilyich Mikheev! The list of names goes on. MAZ-5203 with a lifting capacity of 20 tons without a dolly had a length of 10,825 mm, a width of 3,000 mm and a height of 1,285 mm. The modernized MAZ-5203M was created to transport cargo weighing up to 18 tons.
In the first post-war years, everyone was new to their business, the entire design department.
And - it’s funny to say - the specialists were housed in the so-called engineering building, but, in fact, in a barracks built by captured Nazis behind the fence of the plant. There were no special standards then. Once the trailer was drawn, tested under load, it was put into production. The main thing is that all documentation remains in the office; taking it home is prohibited. The weight of 19.5 tons was on the shoulder of the MAZ-5204 trailer with a base of 5030 mm. The MAZ-5206 trailer chassis weighed 5,400 kg without load and 15,700 kg with the product.
Thanks to the trophies?!

One of the first trailers of the Minsk Automobile Plant, MAZ-5330, was created by chief designer Ilya Kharitonovich Pakhter during the Great Patriotic War.
At that time, the finished drawings were transferred to the technical unit. There, a prototype was made using them. When inconsistencies were identified, they were corrected immediately, on the project, and signed for order. Even at first, production was not stopped because of trifles. The MAZ-5216 fuel tanker was equipped with a capacity of 16,000 liters, tank length 7500 mm, width 2400 mm, height 1500 mm.
The first trailer specialists were experts in their field.
For example, chief technologist Mikhail Yurievich Kane even managed to undergo an internship with Ford at the Gorky Automobile Plant! Work issues were resolved literally on the fly. While the plant's management was racking its brains over how to quickly put MAZ trucks into production, the military came knocking on the trailers at the head design bureau (GKB). They urgently needed a universal trailer on a two-axle chassis with a swivel bogie, under a load-bearing body with “tricky” equipment. At first, the engineers wanted to start from scratch, but someone remarked: “Why reinvent the wheel?! Maybe we can spy on something from the Krauts?” The idea was approved. We examined and felt several captured pieces of hardware, added our own ideas - and things went smoothly. Already by the next visit, the military presented a prototype, and they were satisfied with it! As a result, an 11-ton special chassis trailer with a front swivel bogie for installing load-bearing van bodies received the MAZ-5330 index. At first it was used for the installation of generators and power supply stations, and later special air defense equipment was installed on it. But the two-axle MAZ-5206 model of 1946 with increased ground clearance was originally designed for early warning radar stations. The MAZ-5215 semi-trailer with a wheelbase of 4500 m carried up to 12 tons of cargo. The clearance under the axles of the MAZ-5217 semi-trailer van was 440 mm, and under the retracted rollers of the support device - 350 mm.
For tanks and self-propelled guns

One day the chief designer called Babaev: “Listen, Ivan Nikolaevich, an order has been received from the Ministry of Defense for a trailer for transporting tanks.
We must respect: take hold of the ladders.” But no one gave the dimensions of the tank in length and width. As a result, in a week they “figured out” the ladders “from the ceiling.” There were no stamps or equipment then, and everything had to be done at a primitive level. New in 1952: the MAZ-200V tractor with the MAZ-5215 semi-trailer with wooden sides on a steel spar frame carried 12 tons of cargo. A road train with a MAZ-5215 semi-trailer with a carrying capacity of 12 tons in Afghanistan.
Two weeks later, they made ladders with a ground clearance of 280 mm, and immediately received an order to test them.
The tank for loading was not found anywhere, but it is not for nothing that they say: the need for invention is cunning. We persuaded a guy on a caterpillar tractor to drive onto a trailer. The test was successful: while in motion, the peaceful “tank” did not fall off its mount. The MAZ-5203B heavy-duty trailer, model 1951, was put into mass production. Next came the MAZ-5203V with a carrying capacity of 20 tons and the MAZ-5203M, capable of carrying 18 tons. A few years later, these samples were transferred to the Chelyabinsk Machine-Building Plant of automobile and tractor trailers. There, these models were produced with the same indices, only under the ChMZAP brand. Truck tractor MAZ-501V (4x4) with semi-trailer MAZ-5245V. On September 24, 1973, the 1000th MAZ-5205 semi-trailer was manufactured in Minsk.
Secret "ledger"

The production of trailers for the Ministry of Defense was strictly classified.
The military never told the designers why this or that trailed product was needed. Data on load and dimensions were given as a guide. However, the designers are no dummies; they realized that transporting cucumbers in barrels did not require products with a strong frame and reinforced suspension. 1978 dump truck train: MAZ-504G tractor and MAZ-5232V semi-trailer. Timber truck MAZ-543403‑220 with a trailer.
Tanks and self-propelled guns were improved and heavier, and people in uniform ordered more and more trailed models for a more substantial load.
In 1950, the chassis of the MAZ-5204 semi-trailer with a load capacity of 19.5 tons appeared. The welded frame made of rolled profiles had a raised front part for coupling with a tractor or a dolly with a drawbar. In 1952, they created an experimental single-axle semi-trailer MAZ-5201 with a high wooden platform. It had a folding support stand and four sections of folding sides, two each on the left and right. In 1953, the first heavy-duty vehicle trailer MAZ-5208 with a lifting capacity of 40 tons left the gates of the Minsk Automobile Plant. A year later, the 60-tonne MAZ-5212 went into production. There were no alternatives to these products either in the Soviet Union or in the Warsaw Pact countries at that time. And in 1955, Minsk residents designed the MAZ-5224 with a lower frame height and gable tires on all wheels for transporting military cargo. The MAZ-5247G tank carrier was used in conjunction with the MAZ-537G (8x8) tractor. The MAZ-950600‑020 dump semi-trailer with a body volume of 18 m3 transports up to 26 tons of bulk cargo.
Once Babaev and his colleagues almost became “enemies of the people.”
And all because of excessive zeal. The specialists were bursting with professional anxiety: how do their brainchildren work, in what terrain, in what climatic conditions? Enthusiasts decided to collect information on the operation of trailers. We collected customer data on the use of products, compiled a corresponding ledger, and informed management about this... A two-axle MAZ-8378 coupled with a MAZ-5336 (4x2) vehicle. Road train MAZ-63031+83781. Moscow, 1991.
Representatives of the competent authorities were almost missed by Kondraty - they were so worried!
They took everything away from the “researchers” and hid it in a safe out of harm’s way. After that, no one from the authorities had access to the “secret”. It turns out that the MAZ State Design Bureau for trailers indirectly worked for the defense, even when it was fulfilling seemingly purely civilian orders. For example, in the late 50s - early 60s, by order of the Ministry of Medium Machine Building and the technical requirements of Lengiprostroy, Minsk residents developed autonomous electric and human-controlled carts with a remote control for transporting... nuclear waste! Half a century later, the creators remember their design features: 110 mm frontal lead shell, 300 mm thick glass, 25 mm metal side walls of the cabin. Five pieces were exported to the GDR, to the Rostock power plant. Chernobyl happened in 1986, and the experience of building these carts was taken into account when equipping a batch of cars with protection for the driver. They were involved in eliminating the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. Trailers on two axles and dual tires are also an integral part of MAZ’s history.
For Sovtransavto

Since the beginning of trailed production in 1946, over the first half-century of history, MAZ specialists have developed over 100 different designs, a good half of which were intended for the military.
Two-axle semi-trailers of the Minsk Automobile Plant worked both in domestic and international transport.
The MAZ trailed set has never been created from scratch - each model is designed for a specific truck.
Thus, in the 50s of the twentieth century, the MAZ-200 family included trailers with a carrying capacity of 6 to 10 T: models with indexes 5206, 5207В, 5213, 5224В. The MAZ-5215B semi-trailer, capable of transporting 12.5 tons, belongs to the same cohort. In September 1953, the main conveyor reached its design capacity for the production of automotive equipment, and in the same year, experienced MAZ-501 timber trucks with a dissolution trailer were produced (serial production began released in December 1955). In the fifth five-year plan, MAZ mastered a line of trailers with a carrying capacity from 6 to 60 tons. The most popular in production are three-axle MAZ trailers.
In the 60s, issues of increasing the payload were resolved with the release of the 7-ton MAZ-5243 trailer and the 13.5-ton MAZ-5245.
They were produced to work in conjunction with the MAZ-500. In 1965, the Minsk Automobile Plant presented the MAZ-504 tractor with the MAZ-5245 semi-trailer at the Leipzig fair. At the same time, the plant also produced tractor dump trailers 1‑PTS-5 with a carrying capacity of 5 tons. At the same time, the assembly of a special semi-trailer 5244B with a loading capacity of 10.4 tons and a dump trailer 5232B, capable of carrying 13.5 tons, was mastered. The MAZ-9389 semi-trailer-container carrier in a coupling with main tractor MAZ-64221 (6x4).
The beginning of the 70s was characterized by the appearance of heavy-duty road trains.
They included MAZ trailers with a carrying capacity of 7.0–14.5 tons, models 8925, 8926, 886В, 8950, 8378. The series also included semi-trailers with indexes 9380, 5205, 941 with a loading capacity of 15–25 tons. In 1971, according to our own initiative, the plant organized small-scale production of MAZ-504V-5205 road trains with a carrying capacity of 20 tons. A year later, Minsk residents produced a batch of MAZ-514‑886B and MAZ-515B-941 road trains. Container chassis began to be produced in Minsk back in 1978.
In August-November 1973, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the USSR automobile industry and the 30th anniversary of the Minsk Automobile Plant, a motor rally was organized across the territory of 15 union republics. The route, 17,500 km long, took six MAZ-500 and MAZ-5335 couplers along with Belarusian-made trailers and semi-trailers and took 85 days. During this time, not a single serious breakdown occurred. And on September 24, 1973, the 1000th MAZ-5205 semi-trailer was manufactured in Minsk.

For the first time in the country since 1978, Minsk residents launched the production of MAZ-9389 semi-trailers and container carriers. They could transport two heavy-duty 1C ISO containers. At that time, MAZ was the only supplier of semi-trailers in the USSR for international transport in the Sovtransavto system. And in April 1980, the first industrial batch of road trains based on MAZ-6422 (6x4) trucks was produced. Such a road train was demonstrated at the USSR Exhibition of Economic Achievements in 1984 as part of the anniversary exhibition “Avtoprom-84”, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Soviet automotive industry.

A year later, the first mainline road train in the USSR that met European standards received the Gold Medal of the Plovdiv Fair. For the MAZ-6422 (6x4) and MAZ-5432 (4x2) family of the late 80s - early 90s, designers created a range of semi-trailer “tails” models 9380, 9397, 9398, 9396, 9389 with a carrying capacity of 15–32.5 tons. They took into account the latest achievements of the world trailer construction: aluminum platforms, awnings made of synthetic materials, steered axles, two-wire and combined brake systems, etc. After modernization and increasing the power of the tractors, the total weight of the road trains was raised from 36–38 to 38–42 tons. Many of them were hauling semi-trailers with blue Sovtransavto awnings.

Over the decades, the service life of MAZ semi-trailers has increased several times and by the beginning of the 21st century it already amounted to 400,000 km. By the time of the collapse of the USSR, 88% of all MAZs were produced with the State Quality Mark. Yes, and the level of the trailer composition - you still need to look: since 1974, MAZ trailers and semi-trailers have been certified to the highest category of quality.

Where can I buy

Online stores have been created with detailed descriptions, photos and videos of models. MAZ 9758 can be purchased on the official website of the manufacturer or from the company’s dealers. They also provide advice from employees, their recommendations on operation and choice of model depending on the method of use. Semi-trailers are sold with free delivery to their destination.

You can contact store employees or car plant specialists using the phone number offered to site users. Often, a contact pop-up window will appear where you can communicate directly with specialists. It is suggested that you look at reviews from other people and take their opinions into account when making a purchasing decision.

The price of the new Maz 9758 semi-trailer is 1,700,000 rubles (valid in March 2022). The MAZ 975800 semi-trailer has a similar price. It is important to note that many stores have installment plans or a credit payment system.

You can purchase a used car online from the market. The cost will be lower. But it is necessary to take into account the wear of parts that are best replaced. The price of a used MAZ vehicle is from 900,000 to 1,300,000 rubles.

What to look for when purchasing

It is better to choose a used vehicle based on the opinion of the employees at the service center and reviews from the owners. The buyer cannot always check the payment order in this way. When purchasing a used version, you should inspect it carefully. It is clear that when choosing a new car, you need to rely on the methods of operation, transportation range, road traffic and the type of cargo.

Buying a used truck.

Details taken into account:

  • tire condition;
  • absence of corrosion and fractures on the frame;
  • appearance of the vehicle;
  • cabin condition;
  • engine turbine (inspected for the possibility of leakage);
  • condition of the awning;
  • damage to the platform deck.

It is important to ask the seller how long ago the oil was changed. The acceptable threshold for replacement is 20-30 thousand km.
