The Volvo F88/F89
was a series of heavy-duty trucks produced by the Swedish automaker Volvo between 1965 and 1977.
Volvo introduced advanced control F88
in 1965[2] The truck was the first part of the company's export-oriented "System 8", on which trucking giant Volvo is based today.[3] The F88 sold well internationally and earned a reputation as a reliable cab truck.[2]
Volvo F88
The F88 cabin was already featured on its predecessor. Titan Tiptop in 1964, but the rest of the truck was redesigned. This included a new engine, a new eight-speed gearbox and a stronger chassis and suspension.
The derivative was G88
introduced in 1970, it was essentially the same car but with the front axle mounted 300 mm (11.8 in) further forward to provide greater spread. This was necessary to increase the GCWR to 52.5 tonnes (51.7 long tons).[3]
Volvo Sovtransavto on Soviet roads

In 1973, the first batch of 100 cars went to the Soviet Union. Of these, 27 went to the Leningrad branch of Sovtransavto, the rest to Moscow. They purchased French semi-trailers from Trailor with a carrying capacity of 24 tons. The trucks had a characteristic white and orange cab color and the Sovtransavto logo on the doors. After the domestic MAZ and the Czechoslovakian Skoda, the new Volvo became a revelation for our drivers. They noted the spacious cabin with comfortable seats and two sleeping bags, a powerful, high-torque engine and a good heater. In addition, due to the developed network of service stations, the Volvo F89 could be serviced in any corner of Europe. And in the USSR, the repair process was streamlined, and domestic mechanics regularly underwent training in Sweden.
Volvo F89
In 1971, the larger F89 was introduced with a new twelve-liter engine, development of which began in 1969. The truck and engine were designed to comply with West German regulation setting a lower limit on the number of horsepower at GCWR.[4] To continue selling the heaviest class of trucks, Volvo developed a new, more powerful engine, and the F89 became the first Volvo truck to be sold with turbo-only engines.[4] The TD120 engine was so tall that it had to be mounted at an angle in the frame to fit under the cab. This made it impossible to convert the truck to right-hand drive. Left-hand drive countries had to make do with a more powerful version of the F88, with engine power increased to 312.HK (229 kW).
Sovtransavto
MAZ-504
On July 11, 1968, a new enterprise, Sovtransavto, was formed on the basis of the Kuntsevo automobile fleet of the RSFSR Glavmezhavtotrans. The new institution was responsible for international road transport to the countries of the socialist community, and later to capitalist countries. At first, the main backbone of the fleet was made up of domestic MAZ-504s. In addition to them, Skoda-706RTN truck tractors were purchased in small quantities. Both vehicles had a similar payload class and cabin-over-engine layout.
Due to the specific nature of the work, the recruitment of drivers at Sovtransavto was very strict. In addition to the highest driving skills, the candidate was required to have excellent knowledge of a foreign language, as well as a crystal clear biography. But the payment was appropriate. The salary of a Sovtransavto driver started from 500 rubles. and that's not counting bonuses. In a word, the chauffeur elite.
Skoda-706RTN
The enterprise operated successfully. Trade turnover increased year by year, including with capitalist countries. However, Sovtransavto did not cope with the 50 thousand tons of cargo turnover planned for 1969. Low-power Soviet and Czechoslovak trucks simply could not cope with such volumes. The department needed a more powerful truck tractor with a spacious semi-trailer, but these were not produced in the Soviet Union.
Swedish capitalists helped. Back in 1969, the Swedish company Linjebuss approached Sovtransavto with a proposal to open a line along the Gothenburg - Moscow route, with intermediate points in Stockholm and Leningrad. Transportation was organized in October of the same year, and was serviced by two-axle Volvo F-88-32 with Swedish ASJ-Forss semi-trailers. This is how Soviet carriers became acquainted with Volvo trucks.
