Excavator-tractor YuMZ-6: technical characteristics
The YuMZ-6 tractor itself became a descendant of the famous MTZ-5 tractor from the same manufacturer. The car retained the continuity of its design and was in many ways similar to its predecessor. The agricultural universal row-crop tractor belongs to the 1.4 traction class and is distinguished by a classic semi-frame layout for machines of this purpose.
Engine and transmission
YuMZ-6 excavators were equipped with two types of four-stroke diesel engines without turbocharging:
- D-65 volume 4.94 l;
- D-242-71 with a volume of 4.75 liters.
The engine power of the YuMZ-6 excavator was determined by its model. The factory D-65 produced 60 hp, and the D-242-71 produced 62 hp. The D-65 power unit was supplemented with an electric starting engine. The nominal crankshaft speed was 1800 rpm.
The transmission system of the YuMZ-6 tractor-excavator consists of a five-speed gearbox with a two-flow dry clutch. The car reaches speeds of up to 24.5 km/h. The gearbox is equipped with double gears. Some tractor models were supplemented with a doubler gearbox. The specific fuel consumption of YuMZ-6 reaches 185 g/hp*h. The machine can climb slopes of up to 10 degrees.
Device
The ordinary YuMZ-6 tractor of draft class 1.4, the prototype of which is the MTZ tractor, became the basis for several modifications of YuMZ excavator-loading equipment. The traditional semi-frame base consists of a strapping frame and a bulldozer support frame. To operate the working equipment, a rotary column and a boom with a bucket are used. Drives of working equipment are hydraulic.
The basic design uses piston hydraulic cylinders. Both hydraulic drives are completely independent devices, the operation of which is ensured by one tank. The functioning of the boom and bucket in the YuMZ excavator is ensured by one of the hydraulic drives using a distributor and pumps. The second hydraulic drive ensures the operation of the bulldozer shovel, supports and turning mechanism.
The popularity of this equipment is explained by its versatility and the fact that most of the attachments are unified. Small dimensions make it possible to operate in urban environments, or in areas where access to large construction equipment is limited. Modifications
During the work on the YuMZ-6, the Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant produced not only more than 100 thousand vehicles, but also offered the consumer several special modifications:
- YuMZ-6L, externally reminiscent of the MTZ-50, was distinguished by a rounded radiator grille. The vehicle was equipped with a starting motor;
- YuMZ-6AL - a vehicle with a steering rack adjustable in height and angle, a modified instrument panel, a rectangular hood and structural modifications in the brake system;
- YuMZ-6KL is an industrial modification of the tractor, produced without a rear linkage system. Instead, the manufacturer installed standard mounts for bulldozer and excavator equipment. In essence, it is the YuMZ-6KL modification that can be considered an excavator. After the first model YuMZ-6A was discontinued, this version took the place of the base one. - YuMZ-6AK - was first released in 1978. The equipment cabin had better visibility, and the hydraulic system began to be equipped with power and position control.
Development and release
YuMZ tractors are universal wheeled vehicles that perform agricultural and transport work. The developer of the tractors was the Southern Machine-Building Plant, also known as the plant named after. L. I. Brezhnev. The company produced not only tractors.
The main object of production of the plant were rockets, rocket engines, as well as other high-tech products, the development and production of which was carried out by the efforts of designers, mechanics and engineers of the then Soviet state. Other names of YuMZ are “Yuzhmash”, “DAZ” (Dnepropetrovsk Automobile Plant).
According to the opinion that developed over the years of existence of tractors produced by YuMZ, these machines were considered the best in Ukraine and in neighboring countries. YuMZ tractors were supplied to the Baltic countries, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Poland. Some of the equipment was even exported abroad, for example, to Cuba, China and Japan. Two years after the release of the first YuMZ 6, 100 thousand copies of this equipment were already produced.
The start of production began with the launch of the MTZ-5LS tractor production line in the early 60s of the last century. They were produced by the Minsk Tractor Plant together with Ukrainian engineers and mechanics. The markings of the equipment were preserved, and the tractors that came off the MTZ assembly line became known as “Belarus”.
Later, after the creation of its own tractor machine from Yuzhmash, the production and export of the already famous “Belarus” continued. At the end of the 70s, the YuMZ trademark finally appeared, cars with the sign of which can now be bought on the move and in good condition throughout the country.

Design
The entire structure of the EO 2621 excavator is based on the YuMZ 6AK wheeled tractor . The semi-rotating hydraulic boom is mounted on a vertical column resting on the tractor rear suspension bracket.
Initially, the design of the YuMZ tractor was not designed for use as an excavator chassis.
